The Anchor, Volume 128.17: February 25, 2015, Hope College

The Anchor: 2015

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Countervailing Effects: What The Fda Would Have To Know To Evaluate Tobacco Regulations, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick, Mark A. R. Kleiman Feb 2015

Countervailing Effects: What The Fda Would Have To Know To Evaluate Tobacco Regulations, James Prieger, Jonathan D. Kulick, Mark A. R. Kleiman

School of Public Policy Working Papers

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act [P.L. 111-31] gives the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate tobacco products, including placing restrictions on product composition, sale, and distribution. A complete accounting of the costs and benefits of any tobacco regulation includes harms from possible illicit trade in tobacco products (ITTP): costs of enforcement, violence, incarceration, etc. Indeed, the law instructs the FDA to take into account the “countervailing effects” of regulation on public health, “such as the creation of a significant demand for contraband or other tobacco products that do not meet the requirements.” While …

Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works

This study examines NNESTs’ professional identities as classroom teachers by analyzing NNESTS’ perceptions of their strengths and challenges. The study contributes to NNESTs forming their professional identity by recognizing, developing, and contesting authoritative discourse. A basic qualitative research design is employed to analyze the interview data. Participants are five NNESTs who teach in American classrooms. Three focused themes are identified; linguistic competence, cross-cultural competence, and pedagogical competence. NNEST superiority fallacy is added as the fourth theme. Additionally, the study briefly compares strengths and challenges of U.S. versus foreign graduates. NNESTs’ strengths and challenges are reported in line with other NNEST …

Current Perspectives On Attachment And Bonding In The Dog–Human Dyad, Elyssa Payne, Pauline C. Bennett, Paul D. Mcgreevy

Human-Animal Bonds Collection

This article reviews recent research concerning dog–human relationships and how attributes that arise from them can be measured. It highlights the influence of human characteristics on dog behavior, and consequently, the dog–human bond. Of particular importance are the influences of human attitudes and personality. These themes have received surprisingly little attention from researchers. Identifying human attributes that contribute to successful dog– human relationships could assist in the development of a behavioral template to ensure dyadic potential is optimized. Additionally, this article reveals how dyadic functionality and working performance may not necessarily be mutually inclusive. Potential underpinnings of various dog– human …

Belief About Nicotine Selectively Modulates Value And Reward Prediction Error Signals In Smokers, Xiaosi Gu, Terry Lohrenz, Ramiro Salas, Philip R. Baldwin, Alireza Soltani

Dartmouth Scholarship

Little is known about how prior beliefs impact biophysically described processes in the presence of neuroactive drugs, which presents a profound challenge to the understanding of the mechanisms and treatments of addiction. We engineered smokers' prior beliefs about the presence of nicotine in a cigarette smoked before a functional magnetic resonance imaging session where subjects carried out a sequential choice task. Using a model-based approach, we show that smokers' beliefs about nicotine specifically modulated learning signals (value and reward prediction error) defined by a computational model of mesolimbic dopamine systems. Belief of "no nicotine in cigarette" (compared with "nicotine in …

Library Link Resolvers And Analytics: Using Analytics Tools To Identify Usage Trends And Access Problems With Electronic Resources In Libraries, Amelia Mowry Feb 2015

Library Link Resolvers And Analytics: Using Analytics Tools To Identify Usage Trends And Access Problems With Electronic Resources In Libraries, Amelia Mowry

Library Scholarly Publications

Analytics have become vital to exploring the use of websites in the library world. They allow us to discover who is using our sites, when they are using them, and how they are using them. I believe this data will only become more important as libraries continue to prove their worth in the digital world.

However, there are some challenges with using analytics. One major issue is that some of the essential sites relating to the delivery of library materials do not actually belong to the library. One example of this is the link resolver, which attempts to connect patrons …

From Social To Scholarly And Back Again, Jill Emery, Charlie Rapple

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Researchers are increasingly connecting and working together across institutional and global boundaries, thanks to networks like Academia.edu and ResearchGate, and networked tools like Mendeley. As research itself (not just the resulting publications) begins to break free of traditional containers, what kinds of support can information professionals provide? How can we extend actions we are already taking in virtual reference and virtual help, and expand them into these venues? What challenges are we likely to encounter? What existing services might we be able to draw on to help researchers maximize the reach and impact of their work, wherever it takes place? …
