The Discipline Of International Law In Republican China And Contemporary Taiwan, Pasha L. Hsieh Mar 2015

The Discipline Of International Law In Republican China And Contemporary Taiwan, Pasha L. Hsieh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This Article examines the evolution of international law as a professional and intellectual discipline in the Republic of China (ROC), which has governed Mainland China (1912–1949) and post-1949 Taiwan. The ROC’s centennial development fundamentally shaped modern China’s course of foreign relations and postwar global governance. The Article argues that statism, pragmatism, and idealism define the major features of the ROC’s approach to international law. These characteristics transformed the law of nations into universally valid normative claims and prompted modern China’s intellectual focus on the civilized nation concept. First, the Article analyzes the professionalization of the discipline of international law. It …

Positive Affect Facilitates The Effect Of A Warning On False Memory In The Drm Paradigm, Hwajin Yang, Sujin Yang, Stephen J. Ceci, Alice M. Isen Mar 2015

Positive Affect Facilitates The Effect Of A Warning On False Memory In The Drm Paradigm, Hwajin Yang, Sujin Yang, Stephen J. Ceci, Alice M. Isen

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Increasing evidence that positive affect enhances associative processing has lent weight to the idea that positive affect increases false memory for information that is thematically interrelated. Using the Deese–Roediger–McDermott paradigm, we examined whether mild positive affect facilitates monitoring processes in modulating false memory for associate words. When participants in the warned condition – in contrast to those in the unwarned condition – were overtly warned about possible false recognition of the critical lure, we found that positive affect, compared to neutral affect, significantly enhanced monitoring through a warning and reduced false recognition. Signal detection analyses suggest that when a warning …

The Negative Soft Power Of The China Dream – Ii, William A. Callahan Mar 2015

The Negative Soft Power Of The China Dream – Ii, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

As Ming Wan writes in his commentary in The Asan Forum on the “China Dream,” Chinese leaders use New Year’s celebrations as an opportunity to sum up the achievements of the recent past and to chart new directions for the future. Here, I discuss such New Year’s activity to argue that soft power works in interesting and unexpected ways in China. Joseph Nye famously defines soft power as “the ability to get what you want through attraction rather than coercion or payments.” Soft power, thus, is framed as a positive attractive force that is useful for a state’s foreign policy. …

Prediction Of Venues In Foursquare Using Flipped Topic Models, Wen Haw Chong, Bing Tian Dai, Ee Peng Lim Mar 2015

Prediction Of Venues In Foursquare Using Flipped Topic Models, Wen Haw Chong, Bing Tian Dai, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Foursquare is a highly popular location-based social platform, where users indicate their presence at venues via check-ins and/or provide venue-related tips. On Foursquare, we explore Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic models for venue prediction: predict venues that a user is likely to visit, given his history of other visited venues. However we depart from prior works which regard the users as documents and their visited venues as terms. Instead we ‘flip’ LDA models such that we regard venues as documents that attract users, which are now the terms. Flipping is simple and requires no changes to the LDA mechanism. Yet …

Methodological Considerations For A New Household Panel Survey, Kristen Olson, J. Michael Brick Mar 2015

Methodological Considerations For A New Household Panel Survey, Kristen Olson, J. Michael Brick

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper identifies new opportunities for innovation and expansion on current survey practice in the design of a new household panel survey, including an increased use of new and mobile technologies, more frequent data collection, modified clustering, and use of non-traditional survey measures such as administrative data, planned missing/matrix sampling questionnaire design, real-time data collection, and biomarkers. These innovative data collection methods require rethinking traditional panel survey methods, but can help reduce respondent burden and expand on current social science knowledge. The paper concludes that a new household panel survey would improve knowledge about important social, economic and health issues …

Non-Interference 2.0: China’S Evolving Foreign Policy Towards A Changing Africa, Richard Aidoo, Steve Hess Mar 2015

Non-Interference 2.0: China’S Evolving Foreign Policy Towards A Changing Africa, Richard Aidoo, Steve Hess

Political Science

China’s non-interference policy has come under scrutiny in regards to its growing and deepening relations in Africa. The policy has come to represent an about-face from conditional assistance and investment associated with the Washington Consensus. Although often well received in much of the global South, this policy has drawn a lot of criticism from the West and others. These commentators have perceived non-interference as an opportunistic and often inconsistent instrument for enabling China’s increasing access to African resources and markets. This article suggests that despite some consistent support for the rhetoric of non-interference, China’s implementation of the policy has become …

Psychology Faculty Research

Intermanual transfer refers to an effect whereby training one hand to perform a motor task improves performance in the opposite untrained hand. We tested the hypothesis that handedness facilitates intermanual transfer in two nonhuman primate species: rhesus monkeys (N = 13) and chimpanzees (N = 52). Subjects were grouped into one of four conditions: (1) left-handers trained with the left (dominant) hand; (2) left-handers trained with the right (non-dominant) hand; (3) right-handers trained with the left (non-dominant) hand; and (4) right-handers trained with the right (dominant) hand. Intermanual transfer was measured using a task where subjects removed a …

Solutions To Burnout And Retention As Perceived By County Extension Agents Of The Colorado State University Extension System, Matt Benge, Amy Harder, Jeff Goodwin

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

This study explored solutions to the issue of burnout and retention of Extension agents. Extension agents experience burnout for reasons such as long hours, stress, and organizational factors. As Extension administration addresses job satisfaction and performance of Extension employees, burnout and retention issues identified in this study can facilitate efforts to enhance the effectiveness of a statewide Extension program. Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory was the theoretical framework for this study. Researchers used the constant-comparative method of analysis to identify recurring themes from the open-ended items of an online-administered survey. Twelve primary themes emerged, including (a) compensation, (b) hiring practices, (c) promotion …

A substantial amount of water is applied to Florida landscapes, and encouraging water conservation through irrigation practices has been identified as a priority programming area where there is great opportunity to positively affect the state’s water resources. Florida Extension addresses this priority area through educational programming. Social marketing has been identified as a promising approach to changing behaviors that influence environmental issues, such as water-saving irrigation technologies and practices. This approach recognizes that there are barriers that prevent individuals from engaging in positive behavior changes. This study evaluated an irrigation seminar using a retrospective pretest-posttest design that incorporated elements of …
