Climate Variability And Human Migration In The Netherlands, 1865-1937, Julia Jennings, Clark L. Gray Mar 2015

Climate Variability And Human Migration In The Netherlands, 1865-1937, Julia Jennings, Clark L. Gray

Anthropology Faculty Scholarship

Human migration is frequently cited as a potential social outcome of climate change and variability, and these effects are often assumed to be stronger in the past when economies were less developed and markets more localized. Yet, few studies have used historical data to test the relationship between climate and migration directly. In addition, the results of recent studies that link demographic and climate data are not consistent with conventional narratives of displacement responses. Using longitudinal individual-level demographic data from the Historical Sample of the Netherlands (HSN) and climate data that cover the same period, we examine the effects of …

Relationships On Placement: How Students And Practice Teachers View The Role Of The Practice Teacher, Fiona Mcsweeney

Other resources

The behaviour of the practice teacher on students’ placements is essential to students’ learning experience. Yet as supervision is complex and multi-faceted so can the role of the practice teacher be. Using a Q methodological approach participants were asked to rank thirty-one statements which could be considered part of the role of the practice teacher in relation to how important they judgement them to be to the practice teacher’s role. Analysis showed two main views held by practice teachers and five views held by students. Findings indicate that while both students and practice teachers agree on the unimportance of practice …

Edison And Einstein: The Influence Of Problem-Solving Styles On Knowledge Sharing In Life-Science And Ict Teams, Niall Connolly Mar 2015

Edison And Einstein: The Influence Of Problem-Solving Styles On Knowledge Sharing In Life-Science And Ict Teams, Niall Connolly

Level 3

There is a widely held generalisation that knowledge creation is a consequence of social interaction. However, sociology has taught us that interaction is not as simple as it seems, and that we exhibit preferences for those with whom we interact, thus placing boundaries on the knowledge we create. One robust explanation for increased or reduced interaction is the perception of similarity or dissimilarity. One such similarity/dissimilarity is our individual preferences for problem-solving approaches. In order to describe the influence of individual problem-solving preferences on communication and knowledge sharing, the results of a study in l i f e - science …

Evaluation Of Desiccated And Deformed Diaspores From Natural Building Materials, Tamas Henn, Robert Pal Mar 2015

Evaluation Of Desiccated And Deformed Diaspores From Natural Building Materials, Tamas Henn, Robert Pal

Biological Sciences

With the increasing sophistication of paleoethnobotanical methods, it is now possible to reconstruct new aspects of the day-to-day life of past peoples, and, ultimately, gain information about their cultivated plants, land-use practices, architecture, diet, and trade. Reliable identification of plant remains, however, remains essential to the study of paleoethno-botany, and there is still much to learn about precise identification. This paper describes and evaluates the most frequent types of deformed desiccated diaspores revealed from adobe bricks used in buildings in Southwestern Hungary that were built primarily between 1850 and 1950. A total of 24,634 diaspores were recovered from 333.05 kg …

Not Just Where To Click: Teaching Students How To Think About Information Chapter 14: Librarians And Students: Making The Connections, Joe J. Eshleman, Julie Obst Mar 2015

Not Just Where To Click: Teaching Students How To Think About Information Chapter 14: Librarians And Students: Making The Connections, Joe J. Eshleman, Julie Obst

Library Staff Publications

This chapter explores ways in which different types of students approach the information landscape and how this can impact the tactics and pedagogy of the instruction librarian. More importantly, assignment strategies are presented that connect students to librarians and also push students to think about how they interact with information. A close connection between librarians and students can provide a foundation that can help both. Librarians can expand their understanding of how individual students approach research; students can benefit by gaining a better grasp of the role of the librarian and how librarians can help them.

Institute of Societal Leadership Research Collection

Although most of Southeast Asia is home to religions and cultures carrying significant Indic influence, Vietnam alone is the mainland’s only Sinicised culture. Chinese emperors directly ruled northern Vietnam for most of the period spanning 111 BCE to 938 CE. The next eight hundred years saw a series of independent Vietnamese kingdoms administered by Chinese-style mandarins gradually extend control over and supplant the Indic Champa civilisation to the south—even as French incursions began chipping away at Vietnamese territory as early as 1858.

Success With Library Volunteers, Kelli Johnson Mar 2015

Success With Library Volunteers, Kelli Johnson

Librarian Research

While volunteerism has not been a top priority in many academic libraries in the past, the current state of college budgets may make recruiting volunteers a more attractive prospect. Leslie and Glen Holt’s book, Success with Library Volunteers, offers an extensive look into the past, present, and future of volunteers in all types of libraries. The book is clear and concise with many practical examples. Each chapter is accentuated with comprehensive notes and contains a case study of a successful volunteer program in the King County Washing- ton Library System.

A 21st Century Fairy Tale: Disney Princesses And Perceptions Of Gender, Gina Graham Mar 2015

A 21st Century Fairy Tale: Disney Princesses And Perceptions Of Gender, Gina Graham

Library Research Prize Student Works

Disney's animated characters, songs, story themes and trinkets are true cultural icons, venerated across the world by staunch believers, adults as well as children, who live in massive urban centers and in tiny rural hamlets (Faherty 1). For some, the Disney princess is the princess of all princesses (Do Rozario 34). As Bruce asserts, since the 1937 premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney's princesses have become a directing force of young American girls culture (Princesses 7). Before determining whether this force is positive or negative, one must ask: does the portrayal of princesses in Disney movies affect …

Exploring Exit From The Vocational Rehabilitation System, Rebecca Goe, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute Mar 2015

Exploring Exit From The Vocational Rehabilitation System, Rebecca Goe, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Employment

In the U.S. labor force, the unemployment rate is more than twice as high for people with disabilities (17.9%) than it is for people without disabilities (7.7%; U.S. Census Bureau, 2013). In actuality, this disparity is much higher because many people with disabilities have stopped actively seeking employment. Although unemployment rates are influenced by many intersecting factors, premature exit from Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services likely contributes to the stubbornly high unemployment rates for people with disabilities.

An Information Literacy Snapshot: Authentic Assessment Across The Curriculum, Wendy Holliday, B. Dance, E. Davis, Britt A. Fagerheim, Anne Hedrich, Kacy Lundstrom, P. Martin

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

This paper outlines the process and results of an authentic assessment of student work using a revised version of the AAC&U's Information Literacy VALUE rubric. This rigorous assessment, which included the scoring of nearly 900 student papers from four different stages across the undergraduate curriculum, revealed much about the process of authentic assessment of student learning, the struggles and competencies of our students, and a clear path forward for improving practice. It also gave us a broad view of student learning, allowing us to immerse ourselves in student work and providing a stronger narrative to share with stakeholders.
