Moisés Sáenz: Vigencia De Su Legado (English Translation), Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This book mainly offers the biography of Moisés Sáenz (1888-1941), founding architect of Mexico's system of public schooling and former student of John Dewey, describing in particular his roles in creating rural schools, initiating bilingual education (for Mexico's indigenous populations), and experimenting with linkages between schooling and community development. The volume also includes the author's reflection on the relevance of learning about Profr. Sáenz for his own intellectual trajectory (which includes studying the movement of students between Mexico and the US) and reflections by Mexican educators Humberto Leal Martinez and Juan Sánchez García.

Bazos, Lea R. Ayers Lafave, Gautham Suresh, Kevin C. Shannon, Fred Nuwaha, Mark E. Splaine

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although global efforts to support routine immunization (RI) system strengthening have resulted in higher immunization rates, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the proportion of children receiving recommended DPT3 vaccines has stagnated at 80% for the past 3 years (WHO Fact sheet-Immunization coverage 2014, WHO, 2014). Meeting the WHO goal of 90% national DPT3 coverage may require locally based strategies to support conventional approaches. The Africa Routine Immunization Systems Essentials-System Innovation (ARISE-SI) initiative is a proof-of-concept study to assess the application of the Microsystems Quality Improvement Approach for generating local solutions to strengthen RI systems and reach those unreached …

P-30 Edward Snowden, Criminal Or Patriot: Media Coverage Of National Security Agency Document Leaks, Joyce M. Yoon

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pentad was used to analyze Edward Snowden’s National Security Agency (NSA) document leaks from June 5, 2013 through October 1, 2013 as published in the New York Times (NYT) and the Guardian. The articles were coded by newspaper, headline, reporting journalist, page prominence, word count, publication date, and tone of stories. Content analysis revealed that the Guardian utilized the word “whistleblower” extensively in a positive way while the NYT most often used the term “leaker” in a negative way. Both papers overlap in their identification of Snowden’s actions as one of the most significant intelligence disclosures …

P-06 The Transgenerational Effect Of Substance Use Between Students, Parents & Grandparents, Subira Brown

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Using a survey conducted among college students at Andrews University, this study focused on substance use and sexual behaviors of students and the presence of familial substance use problems. Analysis indicated a significant association between substance use problems of fathers and their children’s substance use. There was a stronger statistical association between father’s substance use problems and male children’s alcohol use. In addition there was a significant relationship between grandparents substance use and youth sexual behavior for both genders. There is a need for further analysis of the study.

P-07 Exposure To Narratives And Social Reasoning, Cassandra Chlevin Mar 2015

P-07 Exposure To Narratives And Social Reasoning, Cassandra Chlevin

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

The primary goal of this study is to replicate the work of Mar, Oatley, Hirsh, dela Paz, and Peterson (2006) on the relationships of narrative and non-narrative texts with empathy and social reasoning in a Seventh-day Adventist Christian sample. The second goal is to examine how different types of Biblical texts correlate with the development of social reasoning in Adventists. Results are expected to mirror those of the original study regardless of religious affiliation. An implication of this study is that for an Adventist population, exposure to religious narratives may play a role in how empathy and social reasoning develops.

P-18 Narcissism And The Selfie: Investigating Millennial Narcissism On Instagram, Megan Reed Mar 2015

P-18 Narcissism And The Selfie: Investigating Millennial Narcissism On Instagram, Megan Reed

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Recent research shows a correlation between self-promoting images on social media and higher levels of narcissism. This research will further demonstrate the positive correlation between the proportion of selfies an individual posts on Instagram and Millennial narcissism. The proportion of pictures that are selfies is measured in two ways: in the subject’s past 4-weeks of picture posting and in the last 30 pictures the subject posted. The standard Narcissistic Personality Inventory is used to measure the subject’s level of narcissism. The subject’s proportion of selfies and narcissistic score is then analyzed for any possible correlation.

P-27 Changing Attitudes Towards Sexual Orientation And The Effect Of Documentary Film, Michael Vanderwaal Mar 2015

P-27 Changing Attitudes Towards Sexual Orientation And The Effect Of Documentary Film, Michael Vanderwaal

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Attitudes towards LGBT are shifting, with over half (51%) of the US population now favoring same-sex marriage. LGBT issues are also being hotly debated in the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church. The purpose of this research is to examine how the film, ‘Seventh-Gay Adventist’ (SGA) influences SDA college students’ attitudes regarding homosexuality. My study will compare attitude scores of students using an experimental design with random assignment. Both the experimental group and the control group will complete a commonly used Homosexuality Attitude Scale and modified version of Fulton’s Adventists and LGB’s survey (2013) at pre-test and post-test. The control and primary …

School Resource Officer And Patrol Officer Perceptions Of Roles And Job Satisfaction, Trisha Rhodes Mar 2015

School Resource Officer And Patrol Officer Perceptions Of Roles And Job Satisfaction, Trisha Rhodes

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Despite growing research on police in schools, there is relatively little known about how the school environment influences officers. School resource officer (SRO) programs increase the range of traditional roles and include activities that may conflict with law enforcement roles, such as mentoring, advising, and teaching. Officers who experience ambiguous or conflicting role expectations may be less satisfied with their work. Officer job satisfaction may also be influenced by individual characteristics, such as locus of control. Importantly, job satisfaction is linked with work performance, and SROs’ work affects the lives of youth, parents, and school staff. The present study examined …

Conceptualizing Risk And Effectiveness: A Qualitative Study Of Women’S And Providers’ Perceptions Of Nonsurgical Female Permanent Contraception, Elizabeth K. Harrington, Diane Gordon, Isabel Osgood-Roach, Jeffrey T. Jensen, Jennifer Aengst

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: Novel approaches to nonsurgical permanent contraception (NSPC) for women that are low cost and require no incision or hysteroscope/surgical equipment could improve access to, and the acceptability of permanent contraception (PC). To better understand opportunities and limitations for NSPC approaches, we examined women's and OB/GYN providers' perceptions of NSPC in Portland, OR.

Study Design: Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted with 40 women recruited from outpatient clinics with purposive sampling, and a focus group was conducted with 9 OB/GYNs in academic and community practice. Transcripts were coded and inductively analyzed with a grounded theory approach.

Results: The majority of women …

Empirical Evaluation Of Transit Signal Priority Through Fusion Of Heterogeneous Transit And Traffic Signal Data And Novel Performance Measures, Wei Feng Mar 2015

Empirical Evaluation Of Transit Signal Priority Through Fusion Of Heterogeneous Transit And Traffic Signal Data And Novel Performance Measures, Wei Feng

PSU Transportation Seminars

Transit signal priority (TSP) is designed to reduce delay for transit vehicles through signalized intersections. For an existing TSP system, it is important to assess how timely and effective TSP phases are granted to buses that request priority. It is also necessary to evaluate the time savings and delays for buses and other vehicles as a result of TSP phases. However, due to the lack of disaggregated and integrated transit, traffic and signal phase data, previous studies have not investigated the TSP performance at the phase level. This study collects and integrates three archived databases: bus automatic vehicle location (AVL) …

Hemochromatosis: Niche Construction And The Genetic Domino Effect In The European Neolithic, John M. Mccullough, Kathleen M. Heath, Alexis M. Smith Mar 2015

Hemochromatosis: Niche Construction And The Genetic Domino Effect In The European Neolithic, John M. Mccullough, Kathleen M. Heath, Alexis M. Smith

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is caused by a potentially lethal recessive gene (HFE, C282Y allele) that increases iron absorption and reaches polymorphic levels in Northern European populations. Because persons carrying the allele absorb iron more readily than non-carriers, it has often been suggested HFE is an adaptation to anemia. We hypothesize positive selection for HFE began during or after the European Neolithic with the adoption of an iron-deficient high grain and dairying diet and consequent anemia, a finding confirmed in Neolithic and later European skeletons. HFE frequency compared with rate of lactase persistence in Eurasia yields a positive linear …

Examining The Pseudonymity Of Sports Message Boards And The Subsequent Effects On Levels Of Self-Disclosure, Expressing Extreme Opinions, Emotional Flaming, And Fandom, Todd Marver Mar 2015

Examining The Pseudonymity Of Sports Message Boards And The Subsequent Effects On Levels Of Self-Disclosure, Expressing Extreme Opinions, Emotional Flaming, And Fandom, Todd Marver

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how not revealing one's identity (i.e., being pseudonymous) on sports message boards affects levels of self-disclosure, expression of extreme opinions, frequency of emotional flaming, and levels of fandom. Quantitative scales were developed to measure self-disclosure, expressing extreme opinions, emotional flaming, and fandom. After participants read two competing sports message board scenarios (one including a positive message and the other a negative message), they responded to the survey questions.

The 4th Amendment To The U.S. Constitution, Article 3 Of The Ala Code Of Ethics, And Section 215 Of The Usa Patriot Act: Squaring The Triangle, Sue Ann Gardner Mar 2015

The 4th Amendment To The U.S. Constitution, Article 3 Of The Ala Code Of Ethics, And Section 215 Of The Usa Patriot Act: Squaring The Triangle, Sue Ann Gardner

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

Librarians in the United States have many professional guideposts to inform their work. A patron's right to privacy is one tenet that tends to be upheld tenaciously, and is informed first by the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, among other Amendments, as well as Article III of the American Library Association Code of Ethics. Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act, the so-called "library provision," contradicts both the 4th Amendment and Article III of the ALA Code of Ethics, making it a weak third leg of a triangle of guideposts. The speaker explains how Section 215 allows for confiscation …

Keeping Busy!, Melanie L. Fernandes

Blogging the Library

I have been keeping very busy in Special Collections! I just finished a project combing some papers that had initially been separated. One box was intended to be department papers, while the other was supposed to be personal papers. I talked with some of the staff and we decided that it would be best to combine the papers, as they have a lot of common information that would be good to have in one place. That collection is finally complete and it feels great to have my first full project all done! [excerpt]

This study is a quantitative content analysis of news reports and court records on 3,328 violence-related arrest cases of 2,586 individual sworn law enforcement officers during the years 2005-2011. The arrested officers were employed by 1,445 nonfederal state, local, special, constable, tribal, and regional law enforcement agencies located in 805 counties and independent cities in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Binary logistic regression and classification and regression tree (CART) analyses were conducted to predict criminal conviction in violence-related police crime arrest cases. Finding indicate that conviction of police officers on one or more offenses charged are driven by …

Identification Of Whole Mitochondrial Genomes From Venezuela And Implications On Regional Phylogenies In South America, Esther J. Lee, D. Andrew Merriwether Mar 2015

Identification Of Whole Mitochondrial Genomes From Venezuela And Implications On Regional Phylogenies In South America, Esther J. Lee, D. Andrew Merriwether

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Recent studies have expanded and refined the founding haplogroups of the Americas using whole mitochondrial (mtDNA) genome analysis. In addition to pan-American lineages, a number of studies have identified specific variants that show higher frequencies in restricted geographical areas. In order to further characterize Native American maternal lineages and specifically examine local patterns within South America, we analyzed twelve maternally unrelated Yekuana whole mtDNA genomes from one village (Sharamaña) that include the four major Native American haplogroups A2, B2, C1, and D1. Our study proposes a reconfiguration of one subhaplogroup A2 (A2aa) that is specific to South America and identifies …

A Democracy, If We Can Keep It: Democratic Engagement Policy In Higher Education, Maegan Gorham Mar 2015

A Democracy, If We Can Keep It: Democratic Engagement Policy In Higher Education, Maegan Gorham

Theses and Dissertations

Students will be called upon as American citizens to be knowledgeable, engaged, contributing citizens, and higher education plays a part in the development of this role. Engagement must surpass simple volunteerism in order to more fully realize the potential benefit of democracy and democratic engagement activities. In turn, institutions must respond effectively and responsibly, making informed decisions about educating all students in the safest manner possible. This exploratory policy analysis, with embedded legal research, explores the policy issue, "Is higher education the appropriate venue for instruction on democratic engagement and, if so, do the benefits and rewards of instruction on …
