Stability Of Children And Adolescents' Friendships: A Meta-Analytic Review, Diana J. Meter, Noel A. Card
Stability Of Children And Adolescents' Friendships: A Meta-Analytic Review, Diana J. Meter, Noel A. Card
Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications
Decades of research has assessed the benefits of children’s and adolescents’ friendships, but friendships among youth often dissolve within a matter of months or years. Studies have investigated predictors and consequences of friendship stability with the expectation that, in order for friendships to have a positive or negative influence on youth, they need to be enduring. However, differing methodology used to assess friendships affects the proportion of stable friendships observed, which may confound conclusions. In this meta-analysis a number of methodological and substantive study comparisons were made to assess their contribution to differences in effect sizes across studies of friendship …
Webinar: A Comprehensive Evaluation Of Protected Cycling Facilities: Lessons From Five Cities, Christopher Monsere
Webinar: A Comprehensive Evaluation Of Protected Cycling Facilities: Lessons From Five Cities, Christopher Monsere
TREC Webinar Series
As cities move to increase levels of bicycling for transportation, many practitioners and advocates have promoted the use of protected bike lanes (also known as “cycle tracks” or “protected bikeways”) as an important component in providing high-quality urban infrastructure for cyclists. These on-street lanes provide more space and physical separation between the bike lane and motor vehicle lane compared with traditional striped bike lanes. However, few U.S. cities have direct experiences with their design and operations, in part because of the limited design guidance provided in the past. There is limited research from North America on protected bike lanes, but …
Selma Is America, Rashida Aluko-Roberts
Selma Is America, Rashida Aluko-Roberts
SURGE
During my recent trip to Selma, Alabama, I was overwhelmed by the tangible evidence that blatant racism and segregation still exists. In a town where many had made great sacrifices to combat America’s racial injustices, it was disheartening to see how very little change had come to the town MLK described as the “most segregated” in America. Blogging the Library
So in the past couple weeks (interrupted by Spring Break), I spent time cross-checking the PR files with the Finding Aid for them in Word, which some of the interns last summer compiled. It’s incredibly detailed and I only made a few additions – they did a really good job! Since then, I’ve been reading and researching a travel journal written in 1898 by Kate Burr Draper Whiting. I just finished reading and taking notes on it today and it’s incredibly fascinating. Whiting, around 60 years old at the time, took a two and a half month long “cruise” with …

Michael Schwartz Library Publications
At Cleveland State University, the library collaborates with faculty and departments on projects such as:
- capturing and sharing conferences;
- publishing scholarly journals; and
- creating and disseminating open educational resources.
These endeavors have led to additional opportunities in other areas, such as working with students and with the greater Cleveland community. In this webinar, Barbara Loomis, Project Coordinator, Marsha Miles, Digital Initiatives Librarian, and Theresa Nawalaniec, Sciences and Engineering Librarian, at Cleveland State’s Michael Schwartz Library will discuss their work with faculty and departments and the other projects that these have often led to.

This poster focuses on Lavery Library’s collaboration with the Office of Academic Affairs, OAA. At St. John Fisher College students with learning disabilities testing accommodations take their exams in the library instead of a testing center. This is unique because OAA is located in another building from the library and therefore they have to coordinate scheduling of a proctor and student in room they do not control. The library also balances the needs of the general student population and the needs of OAA by offering students other study locations in the library while testing is in progress. The library then …

Birds Of A Feather Learn Together: How Four Academic Libraries’ Teachers Flocked Around Acrl’S Threshold Concepts, Nancy Greco, Kim Hoffman
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
This poster illustrates how St. John Fisher, SUNY Geneseo, the University of Rochester, and Monroe Community College librarians use collaborative learning techniques and semi-annual meetings to improve their teaching.
In the early 2000s, SUNY Geneseo’s Instruction & Reference Services Team librarians began devoting uninterrupted time to share successes and challenges in information literacy instruction and assimilate new concepts and trends into their practice. After two former SUNY Geneseo librarians joined the Fisher team, the two libraries came together to plan joint meeting where information literacy was to be the main focus. For three years, instruction librarians at Geneseo and their …

Multimedia Resources Statistics: Understanding Usage Of Non-Text Resources, Jen Hoyer, Katie O'Connell, Elizabeth A. Tietjen
Publications and Research
As budget cuts are a constant threat and resource costs continue to rise, libraries rely on usage data to be sure that they are delivering the content faculty and students need. Simultaneously, patrons are increasingly accessing multimedia content in the library, and usage reporting standards, like COUNTER’s Release 4, have adapted to reflect this use. This poster explores whether usage of text and non-text resources be compared according to the same measurements, as well as what best practices have emerged, and what gaps remain in current reporting methods.
Effects Of Response Cards And The Number Of Teacher-Directed Questions On Classroom Behaviors, Neelam K. Khan
Effects Of Response Cards And The Number Of Teacher-Directed Questions On Classroom Behaviors, Neelam K. Khan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Active student responding increases student academic outcome and on-task behavior. Response cards are an effective and efficient strategy for increasing active student responding. This study examined the effects of response cards on student disruptive behavior, percentage of questions answered, and accuracy of questions answered while alternating the number of teacher-directed questions across sessions. An alternating treatments design was used with 5 teacher-nominated students. During baseline (BL), the teacher used her standard lecture format, having students raise their hand when responding to a question. During the response card (RC) intervention, the teacher asked students to write responses on their white boards. …
My Husband Is Now A Woman? The Experiences Of Transgender Individuals In Partner Relationships, Lisa Platt
My Husband Is Now A Woman? The Experiences Of Transgender Individuals In Partner Relationships, Lisa Platt
Forum Lectures
How would you react on a first date if the person disclosed they used to be the other gender? Or if your partner/spouse decided to switch genders? This research examines the psychological and social challenges transgender individuals often face when seeking and maintaining romantic partner relationships. The experiences of the transgender community are beginning to receive more attention in both psychological research and mainstream culture. One area conspicuously absent is comprehensive research regarding the nature and challenges of transgender individuals' partner relationships. This study was a qualitative exploration of the transgender partner experience. Participants were recruited nationwide through convenience sampling. …

Being an Online Program Librarian means being the person who keeps abreast of new and developing educational technology, who can troubleshoot Blackboard or other online learning environments, and who can (co)develop authentic information literacy instruction (ILI) for various online courses. However, at Lavery Library I am not the person serving online and distance students, but rather the person serving liaison librarians through collaboration with the Educational Technologist and faculty.
Building on this idea, I have been developing my role as the Assessment and Online Program Librarian since summer 2013. Through collaboration with the Educational Technologist I have been able to …
Shift Happens: Enactment Of Third-Shift Work And Gendered Identity Negotiation Of Working Mothers, Caitlin Brooke Landsman
Shift Happens: Enactment Of Third-Shift Work And Gendered Identity Negotiation Of Working Mothers, Caitlin Brooke Landsman
Theses and Dissertations
For a working mother, the public sphere is frequently conceptualized in previous literature as a first shift of work in the paid labor force, and a second shift of work conceptualized as her motherhood responsibilities, taking place in the home. The present study focuses on a third shift of work for women, conceptualized as bodywork, and the identity negotiation strategies, as well as sensemaking techniques, working mothers employ in order to make sense of this third shift of work. Thematic analysis indicated several sources women draw upon for identity construction purposes, including discourses of comparison, shift obligations, and imaginative emotion …

Living In And Between"Two Different Worlds": Arab American Women, Identity, And Their Interethnic Romantic Relationships, Samar Dababneh
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the growth of Middle Easterners living in America, the study of interethnic
romantic relationships among Arab American women is crucial. The primary objective of this study is to achieve a deeper understanding through in-depth respondent interviews about the Arab American woman's interethnic romantic relationships, familial relationships, and platonic relationships specifically, to discover her use of identity negotiation and management with use of thematic analysis. The pressure for an Arab American woman to find a partner based on parental guidelines creates this notion of living "two separate worlds," thus, affecting the negotiation of her multiple identities. While some Arab …

Selling Citizenship: A Defence, Javier S. Hidalgo
Selling Citizenship: A Defence, Javier S. Hidalgo
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Many people think that citizenship should not be for sale. On their view, it is morally wrong for states to sell citizenship to foreigners. In this article, I challenge this view. I argue that it is in principle permissible for states to sell citizenship. I contend that, if states can permissibly deny foreigners access to citizenship in some cases, then states can permissibly give foreigners the option of buying citizenship in these cases. Furthermore, I defend the permissibility of selling citizenship against the objections that selling citizenship values citizenship in the wrong way, corrupts civic norms, and unfairly discriminates against …
Landscape Legacies Of Sugarcane Monoculture At Betty's Hope Plantation, Antigua, West Indies, Suzanna M. Pratt
Landscape Legacies Of Sugarcane Monoculture At Betty's Hope Plantation, Antigua, West Indies, Suzanna M. Pratt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sugarcane cultivation has played a key role in the development of the Caribbean since the seventeenth century A.D. The Eastern Caribbean island of Antigua in the West Indies was almost exclusively dedicated to sugarcane monoculture from the mid-1600s until its independence from Britain in 1981. This research seeks to better understand the landscape legacies left by long-term sugarcane monoculture at the site of Betty's Hope Plantation in Antigua. This study creates a 400-year simulation of crop yields using the USDA's Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator (EPIC), and evaluates the simulated trajectory of landscape change using historical information about the plantation's agricultural …
"In Heaven": Christian Couples' Experiences Of Pregnancy Loss, Grace Ellen Peters
"In Heaven": Christian Couples' Experiences Of Pregnancy Loss, Grace Ellen Peters
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how young, married, heterosexual Christian couples talk about and make sense of pregnancy loss, specifically loss before the twentieth week. Studies of pregnancy loss often focus on individual differences in response to pregnancy loss, but this research engages a shared, relational notion of pregnancy loss. Furthermore, this project focuses on Christianity as a tool for making sense of pregnancy loss, not simply a demographic characteristic. I conducted six open-ended interviews with two couples, with one interview together and an individual follow-up interview with each spouse. Following the interviews, I analyzed and interpreted the interview transcripts for symbols …
Staring Down The Mukhabarat: Rhizomatic Social Movements And The Egyptian And Syrian Arab Spring, Stephen Michael Strenges
Staring Down The Mukhabarat: Rhizomatic Social Movements And The Egyptian And Syrian Arab Spring, Stephen Michael Strenges
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Unable to enact change through the existing political institutions of their authoritarian regimes, and consistently repressed by state security forces (the mukhabarat), activists in Egypt and Syria relied on street activism to challenge their conditions. This study analyzes the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt and Syria through the conceptual lens of a rhizome. Rhizomatic movements are horizontal, grassroots, and allow for the networking of local community-specific grievances, into larger national movements. This networking allows opposition members groups to build solidarity, construct collective identities, and develop a set of shared goals, strategies, and tactics. Furthermore, it provides for the transcendence of …

A. Introduction
Multistate models describe the life course in terms of transitions individuals experience as they go through stages of life and move between states. These states may represent health states, family status, occupation, place of residence, education or other domains of life. Multistate models have been successfully used in a wide variety of applied sciences. The most fruitful areas of application are health sciences, demography and economics. Important examples of applications of multistate …
