Paving A Two-Way Street: The Rewards And Challenges Of Archival Projects With Community Partners, Eva Guggemos, Joanne Riley, Kathleen Spring, Rachael Woody
Faculty & Staff Presentations
Academic libraries are increasingly engaged in establishing community-based archives programs, often with digital preservation, delivery, and exhibit components. Often these activities are in response to local communities' needs to document valuable and vulnerable cultural heritage materials, fueled by the understanding that community partnerships create mutually beneficial opportunities for the academic institution, students, and staff. From a practical standpoint, institutions need to be able to identify potential points of synergy and challenge when working with both internal and external communities on collaborative digital projects; however, this can be difficult for institutions that are new to this kind of collaboration. Understanding the …

Reinventing Service Statistics: Connecting Primary Library Services With University Learning Outcomes, Amanda Shannon, Christina Hillman, Sue Polanka
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
This poster describes two innovative methods for tracking library statistics and mapping them to strategic plans, learning outcomes, and professional standards. In addition to standard library statistics, previously untracked contributions, including internal projects and professional development, are documented. One university developed this method using Google Forms and another adapted it using a combination Dreamweaver and MySQL. Learn how each university uses this service data to demonstrate value through social media, unit-level reports, and annual reports.

Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Institutional repositories (IRs) and other research archives have at their core the mission to disseminate the scholarship of their communities. At universities, this content is often expected to come primarily from faculty and professional researchers. Certainly, faculty are significant producers of scholarship, but students also make worthy contributions to this body of knowledge. Graduate students, at least, are generally recognized as creators of information, and in recent years, IRs have been successfully collecting theses and dissertations written by masters and doctoral students. However, another important and often overlooked group is undergraduate students.

Library Scholarship
Presenting lessons learned by the archives at Central Washington University during the first year of its new media digitization program. This poster, presented in 2015 at ACRL's national conference, demonstrates how the archives jumpstarted its program by using available systems--an institutional repository and cloud-based streaming service--to disseminate digitized media. The poster presents advantages and disadvantages uncovered while using these repurposed systems, including consequences for metadata, workflow, interoperability, and discoverability.

Migration Trends Shifted In 2014: Also Record Deaths And Continuing Low Fertility, Kenneth M. Johnson
Migration Trends Shifted In 2014: Also Record Deaths And Continuing Low Fertility, Kenneth M. Johnson
Carsey Publications
In this fact sheet, author Ken Johnson reports on new Census Bureau data released on March 26, 2015. The data provide further evidence that the recession’s influence on domestic migration is diminishing. Migration patterns are reverting to those commonly seen before the recession. Suburban counties of large metropolitan areas are receiving more domestic migrants, while large metropolitan core counties are seeing more domestic migration losses. Domestic migration losses also continue in rural areas. There is no evidence in these new Census data of any recovery in fertility. Births remain near 15-year lows, and there were a record number of deaths …

Why Bashar Al-Assad Remains In Power, Taylor Clausen
Why Bashar Al-Assad Remains In Power, Taylor Clausen
Global Tides
It has been almost four years since Syria descended into a vicious civil war. Still, Bashar Al-Assad remains in power despite predictions from Western powers. My paper analyses three distinct events that contribute to the continued rule of Bashar Al-Assad. It concludes with two policy options that the United States could enact to weaken Assad's position in Syria.
The Responsibility To Protect: Emerging Norm Or Failed Doctrine?, Camila Pupparo
The Responsibility To Protect: Emerging Norm Or Failed Doctrine?, Camila Pupparo
Global Tides
This paper seeks to investigate the current shift from the non-intervention norm towards the “Responsibility to Protect,” commonly abbreviated as “RtoP,” which actually mandates intervention in cases of humanitarian intervention disasters. I will look at the May 2011 application of the R2P doctrine to the humanitarian crisis in Libya and assess whether it was a success or a failure. Many critics of the “Responsibility to Protect” norm consider it to be yet another imperial tool used by the West to pursue national interests, so this paper analyzes this argument in detail, referring to case study examples, particularly in the Middle …
Foundational Assumptions In Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Patrick K. Morgan
Foundational Assumptions In Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Patrick K. Morgan
Faculty Presentations
This is a critique of the threshold concepts at the heart of the new ACRL Framework.
Models are only tools, and like all tools, will inevitably perform well in certain contexts and poorly in others. Threshold concepts are exactly and only a model/tool, and far from useless.
In a late-January post on the ACRL blog, Lori Townsend and her colleagues responded to some of the negative press threshold concepts had been receiving; in it, we were reminded how productive threshold concepts-based approaches have been in a variety of learning contexts.
My objections can be roughly corralled into two broad criticisms: …

Ethical Behavior And Ajzen’S Theory Of Planned Behavior Applied To The Decision To Obtain Professional Credentials, Sarajo Paluch
Ethical Behavior And Ajzen’S Theory Of Planned Behavior Applied To The Decision To Obtain Professional Credentials, Sarajo Paluch
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, the requirement to obtain and maintain professional credentials within the engineering discipline varies among the five military departments within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). However, there may be an ethical requirement to do so. The purpose of this research was to investigate ethical theory and behavior theory, and their influence on the decision to obtain and maintain professional credentials. Individual Moral Philosophy (IMP) is one approach describing ethical thought. The Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ) measures the two dimensions of IMP: idealism and relativism. The Theory of Planned Behavior (ToPB) is used in research to predict behavior intentions and …
Indicators Of Terrorism Vulnerability In Africa, Raymond J. Hill
Indicators Of Terrorism Vulnerability In Africa, Raymond J. Hill
Theses and Dissertations
Terrorism in Africa has increased more than six-fold since 1997, with an increase in lethality as well. The U.S. government has spent billions of dollars to counter this increase in terrorism; however, terrorism in Africa has increased seemingly unabated. Furthermore, these methods used to counter-terrorism have been reactionary as opposed to preventative. To address the terrorism threat to a country, we must first understand which characteristics make a country vulnerable to such a threat. A confirmatory analysis bridges the inter-discipline gap between quantitative and qualitative fields through as assessment of observational findings about the causes of terrorism. An exploratory analysis …

Fetal Testosterone: Developmental Effects On Externalizing Behavior, Troy A. Webber
Fetal Testosterone: Developmental Effects On Externalizing Behavior, Troy A. Webber
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fetal testosterone (FT) exposure influences sexual differentiation and may promote well-established sex differences in externalizing (EXT) behavior. Although puberty may be a critical period for these effects, it is unknown how FT exposure influences EXT as a function of pubertal development. We used a longitudinal, multi-sample design to test the relationships between two proxy indices of FT exposure and EXT as a function of age and pubertal development (approximately ages 6, 9, 11, 14, and 16). Twin data were used to approximate FT exposure (TT-FT) because testosterone is thought to cross the intrauterine membrane and cause variability in co-twin gonadal …
A Risk Based Approach To Node Insertion Within Social Networks, Chancellor A. J. Johnstone
A Risk Based Approach To Node Insertion Within Social Networks, Chancellor A. J. Johnstone
Theses and Dissertations
Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a primary tool for counter-terrorism operations, ranging from resiliency and influence to interdiction on threats stemming from illicit overt and clandestine network operations. In an ideal world, SNA would provide a perfect course of action to eliminate dangerous situations that terrorist organizations bring. Unfortunately, the covert nature of terrorist networks makes the effects of these techniques unknown and possibly detrimental. To avoid potentially harmful changes to enemy networks, tactical involvement must evolve, beginning with the intelligent use of network in filtration through the application of the node insertion problem. The framework for the node insertion …
Factors Of Successful Collaboration: Oregon's Watershed Councils As Collaborative Systems, Meghan Doherty, National Policy Consensus Center
Factors Of Successful Collaboration: Oregon's Watershed Councils As Collaborative Systems, Meghan Doherty, National Policy Consensus Center
National Policy Consensus Center Publications
The public sector, business professionals and organization leaders are among some of the diverse entities increasingly viewing collaboration as a useful, and at times necessary, practice. Collaborative systems are networks formed by individuals who repeatedly interact over long time horizons to solve problems and achieve goals they could not on their own. Throughout the academic literature, there are many references to and definitions of collaborative systems or networks, as well as various opinions on what factors enable these systems to be successful. However, these are usually context-specific or limited to the perspective of a certain discipline. Furthermore, empirical literature usually …
Patterns Of Housing Voucher Use Revisited: Segregation And Section 8 Using Updated Data And More Precise Comparison Groups, 2013, Molly Metzger, Danilo Pelletiere
Patterns Of Housing Voucher Use Revisited: Segregation And Section 8 Using Updated Data And More Precise Comparison Groups, 2013, Molly Metzger, Danilo Pelletiere
Center for Social Development Research
What role does the Housing Choice Voucher program play in the economic and racial segregation of its beneficiaries? Expanding upon Metzger’s (2014) analysis of the 50 most populous U.S. metropolitan areas with contemporaneous data, this paper substantiates the finding that voucher households are more segregated by income and race at the tract level than households that earn less than $15,000 annually. However, the evidence is mixed when the nonvoucher comparison group is more precisely defined using the specific income limits of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development voucher program and a minority household designation. Voucher households are still …

Direct-To-Consumer Messaging: A Phenomenological Examination Of Dtc Best Practices, Nicholas Dominick Fancera
Direct-To-Consumer Messaging: A Phenomenological Examination Of Dtc Best Practices, Nicholas Dominick Fancera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study is designed as the building of a foundation in standardizing best practices when designing Direct-to-Consumer messaging. With this being a new and expanding field of marketing and advertising for the high visibility pharmaceutical industry, an establishment of conceptual templature, around which Direct-to-Consumer messaging campaign can be built, offers an opportunity to build a new and vibrant branch on the well-established messaging field. This is particularly important when recognizing the unique needs and requirements of both the pharmaceutical industry and its audience in learning of and about new products.
This study attempted to identify current perception of Direct-to-Consumer practices …
Rural Land Rights And Security In Cultivated Highland Ethiopia: Incremental Reform But Persistent Uncertainty, Tesfaye Teklu
Rural Land Rights And Security In Cultivated Highland Ethiopia: Incremental Reform But Persistent Uncertainty, Tesfaye Teklu
International Journal of African Development
There are important improvements in tenure stability and security of land rights over the years in administratively allocated land. These gains are due to the private efforts of individual landholders, and incremental policy and legal measures. However, there are still unmet demands for certainty in land rights because of inherent instability in tenure associated with rising excess demand pressure for land, temporal decay in value of use rights certificate, deficiency in design and practice of land expropriation and compensation laws, and weakness in land governance and rural of law.
