Interpreting Bronze Age Exchange In Sicily Through Trace Element Characterization Of Ceramics Utilizing Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (Pxrf), Erin Marie Mckendry Mar 2015

Interpreting Bronze Age Exchange In Sicily Through Trace Element Characterization Of Ceramics Utilizing Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (Pxrf), Erin Marie Mckendry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Throughout history and prehistory, Sicily has played a key role for maritime trade in the Mediterranean. Interactions with Sicily are attested to in research for various societies throughout the Mediterranean as early as the Neolithic. However, much of this research paints Sicilian societies as passive, focusing primarily on external groups of people in a given period and their influence on the island. By ignoring the importance of the indigenous population, current research lacks a balanced approach to investigations and subsequent conclusions. This is most evident in literature pertaining to Mycenaean interactions with Sicily during the Bronze Age. Ceramic evidence and …

The Right Perspective In Business Education, Paul Kim Mar 2015

The Right Perspective In Business Education, Paul Kim

Economics Papers and Presentations

The development of economic theories derived by mathematical exposition has been explosive in the past, but the interpretation of economic theories has remained extremely primitive for long time say for more than fifty years because, the assumption, which underlies the use of mathematics, has not been formerly scrutinized. Consequently, teachers of economic theories have misled their students in interpreting economic theories and business models. My concern in this paper is to put business education in the right perspective.

Thus, one of the purposes of this paper is to reintroduce a model[1], which I have developed previously, by which …

“The Preservation Of Indigenous Knowledge In Contemporary Mexico In El Cultivo Del Maíz En Yojovi By Javier Castellanos Martínez.”, Ida Day Mar 2015

“The Preservation Of Indigenous Knowledge In Contemporary Mexico In El Cultivo Del Maíz En Yojovi By Javier Castellanos Martínez.”, Ida Day

Modern Languages Faculty Research

The author applies an ecocritical perspective to the study of Javier Castellanos' 1988 monograph of Yojovi corn farmers' testimonies, El cultivo del maíz en Yojovi. The author's ecocritical lens establishes Yojovi rights to determine food sustainability practices and to determine land resource use. In particular, the author examines the conflicts between Yojovi knowledge of corn varieties and their cultivation and the pressure to alter their practices to adhere to genetically modified corn crop production. She also reveals the conflicts between Yojovi narratives that situate humans within their natural habitats and the Western scientific paradigm's narratives that tend to separate humans …

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Panel title: Staffing a Library Publishing Program: The Whos, Hows, and Whens

Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? The panel will discuss two inflection points in staff planning for library publishing: what it takes to get started (for a library that is just beginning to think about publishing), and what it takes to grow (for a library that has a few years of experience and wants to do more). It will also shed light on one of the least understood, and …

Age Determination Of Modern And Archaeological Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytcha) Using Vertebrae, Anthony Raymond Hofkamp Mar 2015

Age Determination Of Modern And Archaeological Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytcha) Using Vertebrae, Anthony Raymond Hofkamp

Dissertations and Theses

Incremental growth rings in X-rays of salmon vertebrae have been used since the 1980s to age Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) remains from archaeological sites in the Pacific Northwest. These age estimates, paired with generalized life history patterns, have been used to determine salmon species, season of capture and in turn season of site occupation. This approach relies on a variety of assumptions, the most fundamental of which is that rings represent true years. Archaeologists using vertebral age determination techniques have failed to adequately test this assumption and present their methodologies. This thesis assesses the validity of using incremental …

Corruption And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From A Random Audit Program, Jamie Bologna, Amanda Ross Mar 2015

Corruption And Entrepreneurship: Evidence From A Random Audit Program, Jamie Bologna, Amanda Ross

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

In this paper, we examine the effect of corruption on business activity in Brazilian municipalities. Previous research that has examined the impact of corruption has relied primarily on survey or conviction data, which may be problematic as these measures likely to be biased. We use a new measure of corruption that draws upon random audit data of municipal governments’ finances in Brazil. We find that higher levels of corruption cause reductions in the number of businesses operating in an area. Furthermore, we find that these effects become larger over time, suggesting that corruption is more detrimental to long-run economic activity. …

Exploring Dietary Sacrifice In Intimate Relationships For Couples With Celiac Disease, Lindsey Marie Alley Mar 2015

Exploring Dietary Sacrifice In Intimate Relationships For Couples With Celiac Disease, Lindsey Marie Alley

Dissertations and Theses

Prior research on eating behaviors has shown that romantic partners actively merge their dietary preferences throughout the course of a relationship and find significant value in cooking and eating the same foods together at the same times. Yet, little is known regarding the impacts of specific dietary support processes involved in maintaining said communal diet when one partner drastically alters his or her eating patterns. The current study defined dietary sacrifice as a phenomenon within the context of Celiac Disease (CD): a chronic illness that requires strict adherence to the gluten-free diet (GFD). Drawing from existing research on sacrifice within …

The World In Transition: A Comparative Analysis Of Youth Perceptions In China And America, Tyler D. Prochazka Mar 2015

The World In Transition: A Comparative Analysis Of Youth Perceptions In China And America, Tyler D. Prochazka

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Many scholars have argued, over the next two decades China will rise while the United States begins a relative decline. Today’s youth will eventually become the next generation of leaders and policymakers. Thus, understanding youth’s perceptions of these trends can help provide insight into how they will shape the future Sino-U.S. relationship and their state’s standing in the world. This research found that the youth in China were optimistic toward their country’s prospects in the international community compared to their American counterparts. The relative optimism among the Chinese has made them more willing to participate in global affairs and institutions …

A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, David Scherer Mar 2015

A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, David Scherer

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. In this session, you will hear from three successful library publishers who have embraced this external facing aspect of publishing. …

Developing A Journal Editor Workshop, Allegra Swift, Isaac Gilman Mar 2015

Developing A Journal Editor Workshop, Allegra Swift, Isaac Gilman

Library Staff Publications and Research

One of the common misconceptions around open access journals is that they lack quality and impact. For a library publishing program, it is important for the program’s journals to contradict this misconception in order to retain institutional support and gain quality submissions, peer reviewers, and substantive editorial boards. A workshop to educate and provide improvement support for journal editors was born out of a conversation between two librarians responsible for library publishing efforts at their respective institutions. A need for editor support was recognized as being transferable across institutions and the two decided to build a model workshop. The workshop …

Post-graduate internships, residencies, and fellowships have existed in research libraries since the 1930s, and have increasingly become a diversity recruitment and retention method of college and university libraries since the 1980s. These programs recruit recent graduates from Library and Information Science programs for training and specialization in some aspect of academic and research librarianship, usually under a term-limited contract of one to three years, often with a stated goal of contributing to the …

Leveraging Oa, The Ir, And Crossdepartment Collaboration For Sustainability: Ensuring Library Centrality In The Scholarly Communication Discourse On Campus, Steve Brantley, Todd Bruns, Kirstin Duffin

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

More than halfway into the second decade of the 21st century, academic libraries are becoming more integrated in the scholarly life of their faculties than ever before. Important trends in scholarly communication, such as transitioning from subscription journals to open access journals, increasing amounts of “born digital” data and creative works, the growing importance of protecting one’s intellectual property rights, and keeping digital scholarship organized, managed, and preserved, are all areas where academic scholars and researchers require support services and assistance. Librarians are natural partners to provide these services.
