Facebook For Health Promotion: Female College Students’ Perspectives On Sharing Hpv Vaccine Information Through Facebook, Ni Zhang, Joann Tsark, Shelly Campo, Michelle Teti
Facebook For Health Promotion: Female College Students’ Perspectives On Sharing Hpv Vaccine Information Through Facebook, Ni Zhang, Joann Tsark, Shelly Campo, Michelle Teti
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Facebook, a social network site, has been widely used among young adults. However, its potential to be used as a health promotion medium has not been fully examined. This study explored Facebook's potential for sharing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine information among female college students in Hawai‘i. Culturally tailored flyers and handouts were developed and distributed at one large university in Hawai‘i to recruit female college students between the age of 18 and 26 having an active Facebook account. Three focus group meetings were conducted to gather student perspectives about how information about HPV vaccine may be best shared via Facebook. …

The Career Path, Education, And Activities Of Academic Law Library Directors Revisited Twenty-Five Years Later, Michael J. Slinger, Sarah C. Slinger
The Career Path, Education, And Activities Of Academic Law Library Directors Revisited Twenty-Five Years Later, Michael J. Slinger, Sarah C. Slinger
Scholarly Works
In conducting this new study, our goal is to provide useful information to the profession and guidance to future law library directors. We also think that by examining the director position we can provide a window into how the profession of academic law librarianship is evolving. Some of the changes we uncovered we see as positive. However, other changes are of concern, including an emerging trend at some institutions to remove full faculty status from the director. This is alarming to those of us who think retaining full partnership with the law faculty is crucial for the future effectiveness of …

Subversive Humor, Chris A. Kramer
Subversive Humor, Chris A. Kramer
Dissertations (1934 -)
Oppression is easily recognized. That is, at least, when oppression results from overt, consciously professed racism, for example, in which violence, explicit exclusion from economic opportunities, denial of adequate legal access, and open discrimination perpetuate the subjugation of a group of people. There are relatively clear legal remedies to such oppression. But this is not the case with covert oppression where the psychological harms and resulting legal and economic exclusion are every bit as real, but caused by concealed mechanisms subtly and systematically employed. In many cases, those with power and privilege use cultural stereotypes in order to sustain an …
The Role Of Acculturation Differences And Acculturation Conflict In Latino Family Mental Health, Kathryn E. Lawton
The Role Of Acculturation Differences And Acculturation Conflict In Latino Family Mental Health, Kathryn E. Lawton
Dissertations (1934 -)
>In order to help address the mental health disparities that exist for Latino families in the U.S., the current study sought to examine the acculturation-mental health link within the context of the Latino family and to identify potential mechanisms for intervention to alleviate mental health problems in this population. Specifically, our goal was to examine how parent-adolescent acculturation differences were related to mental health in Latino adolescents and their parents and to understand the role of acculturation conflict and family functioning within the Latino family. Participants included 84 adolescent-parent dyads recruited through bilingual middle schools. We found partial support for …
Ambivalent Sexism And Positive Illusions Of Physical Attractiveness In Heterosexual Romantic Relationships, Michaela Engdahl
Ambivalent Sexism And Positive Illusions Of Physical Attractiveness In Heterosexual Romantic Relationships, Michaela Engdahl
Dissertations (1934 -)
While considerable research has been devoted to the impact that the mainstream media and parents have on body image, less is known about how romantic partners' beliefs and perceptions impact individuals' evaluations of both their physical selves and their relationships. This study examined the influence of individually-endorsed cultural sexism on romantic partners' tendency to hold positive illusions about their significant others' physical appearance and the impact of sexism and positive illusions of physical attractiveness on body esteem and relationship satisfaction. Evidence of positive illusions of physical attractiveness was found, but there was no significant association between gender and positive illusion …

"A Door To A Good And Happy Life": Building Social And Cultural Capital In A College Success Program, Zachary Kronstat , '15
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This thesis aims to answer the question of how the people involved in a college success program’s middle school component understand the work being done at their site. Using data from two and a half months of participant observation, interviews, and materials collection at the site, the author concludes that this program is an intentional community of practice aiming to close the opportunity gap through developing the social and cultural capital of low-income students of color. The author finds that the site understands the development of social and cultural capital to create career choice and a happy life through college …

Things Go Wrong. Life Goes On. How Do We Stay Strong? The Path Of Resilience: Processing Trauma Through Learning, Social Emotional Support, And Empowerment, Sarah Gonzales , '15
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
In this thesis I research how educators and communities can respect the feelings and realities of those experiencing trauma. I look at the ways we can frame learning experiences so that they empower people; allowing them to process their trauma safely and develop resilience. I describe three experiences I have participated in over my time attending Swarthmore College. These separate excerpts are interconnected in the ways that participants entered into an opportunity to constructively process their trauma, with the social emotional support of community members, and were therefore able to become agents of self-advocacy and change.

The Untapped Potential Of Introvert Leaders, Marina A. Pawlaczyk
The Untapped Potential Of Introvert Leaders, Marina A. Pawlaczyk
Selected Honors Theses
Academic research shows that extroverts are generally seen as more productive and
effective leaders than their introvert counterparts because they possess the characteristics our society has so often revered (Grant, Gino, & Hofmann, 2009). With the rise of the “extrovert ideal” throughout our society, introverts are left wondering what role they play when it comes to leadership (Cain, 2013). Through examples of four successful introvert leaders (Susan Cain, Warren Buffett, Laura Bush, and Bill Gates), it can be derived that it is not the personality that makes the leader but, rather, the passion, drive, and self-actualization of the individual. With …
Orphans’ Hope: An Evaluation Of Residential Orphan Care In Malawi Africa, Emily B. Johnston
Orphans’ Hope: An Evaluation Of Residential Orphan Care In Malawi Africa, Emily B. Johnston
Selected Honors Theses
It is estimated that over 7 million orphans are institutionalized worldwide (sos-usa.org). Research has shown that while orphanages are often able to meet physical needs better than alternative forms of care, orphanage life can be harmful for the wellbeing of a child. This study evaluated orphan care at one institution in Malawi, Africa, to determine the effectiveness of care and suggest interventions that could position the children for success. Through interviews with caretakers and administrators, it was found that residential care in Malawi could be an effective form of care. The greatest needs were consistent behavioral intervention and sexual activity …

The Grand Challenge Of Ending Homelessness, Benjamin Henwood, Suzanne L. Wenzel, Philip F. Mangano, Maryellen Hombs, Deborah K. Padgett, Thomas Byrne, Eric Rice, Sarah Butts, Mathew C, Uretsky
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
The notion that homelessness in the United States can be ended, rather than managed, represents a fundamental shift in expectations that has occurred over the past three decades. Many U.S. cities now have plans to end homelessness. Yet homelessness and housing instability are substantial problems that afflict a diverse group of subpopulations such as families, youth, veterans, and chronically homeless single adults. Ending homelessness for each of these populations may require tailored interventions that are responsive to specific individualized needs. These factors make tackling homelessness a difficult task. Although evidencebased solutions exist for some subpopulations, such as housing first for …

"A Short Burst Of Inconsequential Information": Networked Rhetorics, Avian Consciousness, And Bioegalitarianism, Damien S. Pfister
"A Short Burst Of Inconsequential Information": Networked Rhetorics, Avian Consciousness, And Bioegalitarianism, Damien S. Pfister
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This essay uses the concept of “avian consciousness” to reconsider assumptions about human communication and theorize networked rhetorics. By adopting an ornithomorphic frame, I critically read Don DeLillo’s The Body Artist as an exploration of overlaps between human and avian consciousness. I then argue that avian consciousness provides a richer metaphor for understanding networked rhetorics than autistic consciousness, which is an increasingly dominant trope for explaining interaction with digitally networked media. I explore how Twitter, explicitly modeled on avian communication, can be understood as circulating information in ways analogous to the contact and assembly calls of birds. The essay concludes …
The Future Perfect Repository: An Unsuccessful Proposal, Paul Royster
The Future Perfect Repository: An Unsuccessful Proposal, Paul Royster
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
Some day, in 5 or 25 years, someone probably attending the Open Repositories 2015 meeting will have participated in developing the future perfect or near-perfect repository. Spoiler alert: It will not be me. I am far too technically challenged, having last studied computer science in 1970, when we programmed on punch cards in the newest language—Fortran IV. Still, I believe I can comment productively on what the future perfect repository will look like and how it will behave. I have managed a successful institutional repository for more than 10 years, and I have visited, browsed, searched, downloaded from, and crash-landed …

Editors Use Social Media Mostly To Post Story Links, Sue Burzynski Bullard
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
A survey of senior editors of U.S. print broadcast and online news outlets found that while 98 percent of the 376 respondents say they use social media, they primarily use it to post links to stories on Facebook and Twitter. Far fewer use social media to interact with audiences by posing questions and responding to comments
