Lawyered Up: Local Communities, Courts, And Urban Renewal, Madeline Spolin Apr 2015

Lawyered Up: Local Communities, Courts, And Urban Renewal, Madeline Spolin

Sociology Honors Projects

What is the role of the judicial system in solving issues of urban renewal? I propose that communities use courts as a redress to become part of the decision making process on urban renewal issues, because courts provide procedural issues that are easily open to challenge in federal statute. I analyze public statements made throughout the construction of the Green Line in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, a federally funded urban renewal project. In spite of built in public consultation processes, changes to transit design do not occur when concerns are raised at public consultation meetings; instead, they come from …

Barriers And Motivations In Mental Health Legislative Advocacy In Oregon, Bethany Webb Apr 2015

Barriers And Motivations In Mental Health Legislative Advocacy In Oregon, Bethany Webb

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Compared to other allied health fields, psychology continuously lags behind in representation on the state, national, and local level. The percentage of advocacy involvement by psychologists is very low compared with other professions. There is a great need for all psychologists to become advocates. Unfortunately, there has been limited research into the reasons why few psychologists actually engage in this process. The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in state psychological membership and primary place of practice among Oregon psychologists and students with regard to participation in mental health legislation and to identify barriers and motivations to …

Examination Of The Effects Of Mild Hearing Loss On Memory Using The Wide-Range Assessment Of Learning And Memory – Second Edition (Wraml2), Heather Paige-Deming Apr 2015

Examination Of The Effects Of Mild Hearing Loss On Memory Using The Wide-Range Assessment Of Learning And Memory – Second Edition (Wraml2), Heather Paige-Deming

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The current study examined whether young adults with mild hearing loss around 1000 Hz would differ from normal hearing participants in their performance on a standardized memory and learning instrument used in the field of psychology (i.e., WRAML2; Sheslow & Adams, 2003). Participants were 46 normal hearing individuals and 23 individuals with mild hearing loss. Hearing participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups (hearing control, 23 decibel loss, and 37 decibel loss). All 4 groups completed the WRAML2 under standardized conditions. Based on the effortful hypothesis, it was anticipated that individuals with hearing impairment would show deficits on …

Factors Associated With Youth Athletes Discontinuing Vs. Staying In A Sport, Jessica R. Shibko Apr 2015

Factors Associated With Youth Athletes Discontinuing Vs. Staying In A Sport, Jessica R. Shibko

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

This study investigated the factors that go into youth athletes deciding to drop out of a sport versus staying in the sport. To test this, current Otterbein University athletes and non-athletes took an online questionnaire that asked specific questions pertaining to their experience in sport participation. We tested the hypotheses that (1) those who began specializing in sports at a younger age will be less likely to continue participation, (2) parental pressure would be a reason for dropout and parental support would influence the athletes to stay in, and (3) those who continued participation in sports would perceive a healthy …

Self-Objectification, Self-Valuation, And Bodily Self-Concept: An Examination Of Women's Experiences In A Post-Feminist Society, Madeleine Holmes Apr 2015

Self-Objectification, Self-Valuation, And Bodily Self-Concept: An Examination Of Women's Experiences In A Post-Feminist Society, Madeleine Holmes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Objectification is a central concept in feminist theories surrounding the oppression of women. When objectification occurs, a woman is perceived and treated as a body or a collection of body parts for others to evaluate or utilize for their own pleasure (Bartky, 1990; Fredrickson & Roberts, 1998). Research has shown that women socialized in patriarchal cultures internalize their objectification with negative psychological consequences (Tiggemann & Lynch, 2001; Noll & Fredrickson, 1998; Fredrickson, et al., 1998). This study explored the subjective experiences of women in the context of a culture that generally perpetuates a post-feminist sensibility. Six women participated in semi-structured …

A Source Analysis Of The 1919 Chicago Black Sox, Jordan P. Fields Apr 2015

A Source Analysis Of The 1919 Chicago Black Sox, Jordan P. Fields

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

In this thesis, I discuss the relation between Chicago Tribune articles and secondary sources covering the Chicago White Sox and the 1919 World Series. The Chicago Black Sox, as they became known, fixed the World Series in an attempt to receive money from gamblers. This was reported on by the Chicago Tribune and later summarized, analyzed, and explained by various historians and authors. I start by analyzing the Chicago Tribune’s account of the events from the 1919 World Series to see if the writers noticed anything suspicious about the series. Next, I look at the Tribune’s account of …

The Influence Of Preferred Music On Vigilance And Mental Workload, Michelle H. Wang Apr 2015

The Influence Of Preferred Music On Vigilance And Mental Workload, Michelle H. Wang

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Music is found in various aspects of daily life. Many individuals listen to music while completing mentally demanding tasks. The current study aims to explore the relations between music on attention performance and perceived mental workload. Participants completed two identical vigilance tasks under two different conditions, preferred music and silence. Following each vigilance task, participants rated their experience according to the six subscales of the workload index, NASA-TLX, for each condition. Even though we did not observe a main effect of music, there are many robust interactions. Overall, participants performed better (more correct detection, fewer false alarm and faster response …

The Pattern Of Macroeconomics And Economic Integration: Evidence On D-8 Economic Cooperation, Lukman Hakim, Mostafa Aboelsoud, Jauhari Dahalan Apr 2015

The Pattern Of Macroeconomics And Economic Integration: Evidence On D-8 Economic Cooperation, Lukman Hakim, Mostafa Aboelsoud, Jauhari Dahalan

Economics

The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is the second largest inter- governmental organization after the United Nations Organization (UNO) with its 57 members. But until now, the OIC has not focused on economic integration as a whole. Several OIC countries members initiate to build the D-8 which consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, and try to develop a more intense economic cooperation. Therefore, this research will explore the possibility of D-8 economic integration as well as to identify the macroeconomics conditions that would support the existence of such economic integration. Several techniques are employed …

Postcolonial Theory, John C. Hawley Apr 2015

Postcolonial Theory, John C. Hawley

English

Rather than agreeing to any one meaning or referent, most critics these days speak of ‘post-colonialisms’ to refer principally to ‘historical, social and economic material conditions’ and at other times to ‘historically-situated imaginative products’ and ‘aesthetic practices: representations, discourses and values’ (McLeod 2000: 254). Arising from subaltern studies, its theorists embrace hybridity, indict alterity, analyze colonial discourse, and employ strategic essentialism to promote identity politics. Under its influence, a strain of self-interrogation has for decades run as an undercurrent through much of anthropology and archaeology. Topics including looting, repatriation, stewardship, and the transformation of disciplinary identity are now persistent tropes …

Entrenched In Power: Path Dependence And Un Security Council Reform, Brian Valley Apr 2015

Entrenched In Power: Path Dependence And Un Security Council Reform, Brian Valley

Honors Projects

This paper explores United Nations Security Council reform from a historical perspective. Using the concept of path dependence, the paper shows how features put in place at the Security Council’s formation have limited options for reform in the present. The Security Council’s concert of power model, separation from the General Assembly, distinction of membership types, and high barrier for change serve as mechanisms of path dependence. These features resulted from the Security Council’s formation during WWII in the wake of the failed League of Nations. The inability of current reform movements to bring about change illustrates the Security Council’s continued …

Optimal Design For Social Learning, Yeon-Koo Che, Johannes Hörner Apr 2015

Optimal Design For Social Learning, Yeon-Koo Che, Johannes Hörner

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the design of a recommender system for organizing social learning on a product. To improve incentives for early experimentation, the optimal design trades off fully transparent social learning by over-recommending a product (or “spamming”) to a fraction of agents in the early phase of the product cycle. Under the optimal scheme, the designer spams very little about a product right after its release but gradually increases the frequency of spamming and stops it altogether when the product is deemed sufficiently unworthy of recommendation. The optimal recommender system involves randomly triggered spamming when recommendations are public — as …

Information Literacy And Instruction: Information Literacy Instruction With Primo, Elena S. Azadbakht

Faculty Publications

Discovery services are changing the way library users find and access library materials, especially electronic resources. These search tools are also impacting information literacy instruction for users at all skill levels. The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries in Hattiesburg adopted Ex Libris’s Primo discovery service during the summer of 2014. Primo has now been a prominent feature on our website’s homepage for almost a full semester and has impacted the way we teach information literacy to our students. As the reference librarian for Health Sciences, I will describe my experience incorporating Primo into our library instruction for both first-year experience …

Sex Registries And Juvenile Offenders: An Examination Of College Student Perception, Ebony D. Bryant Apr 2015

Sex Registries And Juvenile Offenders: An Examination Of College Student Perception, Ebony D. Bryant

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Juvenile sex offenders are included in sex offender registration laws based on the assumption that they pose a high risk for future reoffending. Without doubt sex offender laws are quite controversial. Given the recent support in applying sex offender registry laws to juveniles, laws originally designed to protect children of these same ages, this study addresses the following: 1. How do the disciplines of psychology and criminal justice impact student perception of juvenile sex offender registration? 2. How do major of study, race, and gender impact student perception of juvenile sex offender registration? 3. To what extent do social science …

Modeling Peacekeeping: The Case Of Canada Examined, Senai Abraha Apr 2015

Modeling Peacekeeping: The Case Of Canada Examined, Senai Abraha

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This research introduced a comprehensive model for explaining why countries participate in peacekeeping by studying Canada's peacekeeping decisions. The history of Canadian peacekeeping since 1947 presented an ideal case because of the significant fluctuation in its involvement from being a leading peacekeeper to a token contributor. It adopted Waltz's schema to explain this fluctuation at the systemic, domestic, and individual levels of analyses. Most of the literature on Canadian peacekeeping decisions employed systemic level of analysis such as national interest and international cooperation without taking into account the impact of domestic political and socioeconomic environment, and the role of leadership …

Conflict Behaviors: Religiosity, Culture, And Gender As Predictors For Conflict Management Styles Among First And Second Generation Arab Muslim Immigrants In The United States, Jamil Abed Al Hamid Al Wekhian Apr 2015

Conflict Behaviors: Religiosity, Culture, And Gender As Predictors For Conflict Management Styles Among First And Second Generation Arab Muslim Immigrants In The United States, Jamil Abed Al Hamid Al Wekhian

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Multiple studies have shown that culture, religiosity, and gender influence people’s behavior in managing their conflict; however, there has been little investigation of the impact of the acculturation process on these variables utilized by Arab-Muslim immigrants in the United States. My study follows a sequential explanatory model with a mixed methods approach, and specifically explores the conflict management styles utilized by first and second-generation Arab-Muslim immigrants in the U.S. and how their culture, gender, and religiosity contribute to these processes. Data was collected by conducting 257 online surveys and 24 face-to-face semi-structured interviews, with the sample population stemming from the …

Towards A Deeper Understanding Of The Post-Traumatic Growth Factors Leading To An Improved Quality Of Life For Military Combat Veterans, Domonicque Tatum Apr 2015

Towards A Deeper Understanding Of The Post-Traumatic Growth Factors Leading To An Improved Quality Of Life For Military Combat Veterans, Domonicque Tatum

All Capstone Projects

The issue of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following combat deployment among American military veterans has created significant barriers to successful reintegration. However, positive outcomes also exist in the form of posttraumatic growth. The purpose of this study was to examine Posttraumatic Growth in U.S. military combat veterans by identifying significant relationships among variables leading to successful reintegration of military personnel within the community following combat deployment. Participants in this correlational study included a total of 50 military combat veterans from various eras of conflict. Participants completed a survey battery containing the PTSD Checklist (PCLM), Combat Exposure Scale (CES), Post Deployment …

Possible Futures: E-Reserves, Decentralization, And Collaboration, Nora Almeida Apr 2015

Possible Futures: E-Reserves, Decentralization, And Collaboration, Nora Almeida

Publications and Research

E-Reserves is a relatively young library support service that was conceived as a strategic, decentralized response to changes occurring in curricular resource formats during the 1990s. It is a service that has since become ubiquitous in academic libraries and one that is presently facing a crisis spurred by shifts in user culture, e-learning environments, and modes of scholarship production. Challenges facing E-Reserve services are compounded by a professional culture of isolation and by the absence of best practices and internal assessment measures that can serve as effective rubrics to measure changes or test the efficacy of current service models. This …

Examining The Role Of Self-Esteem In The Association Between Emotional Vulnerability And Psychological Well-Being, Kathryn Schilling Apr 2015

Examining The Role Of Self-Esteem In The Association Between Emotional Vulnerability And Psychological Well-Being, Kathryn Schilling

Honors Theses

The purpose of the proposed study was to examine the association between emotional vulnerability and psychological well-being, and test whether the association varies based on level of self-esteem. Researchers define psychological well-being as an appraisal of one’s life where a person gives conscious evaluative judgments about one’s satisfaction with life as a whole (Grossi et al., 2013). Emotional vulnerability is defined as the degree to which a person renders himself or herself exposed to the emotional pain of rejection. Experiencing social rejection has a negative effect on self-esteem, however, having high self-esteem may buffer the self against the pain of …

The Effects Of Music On Employee Affect, Nolan J. Mcnulty Apr 2015

The Effects Of Music On Employee Affect, Nolan J. Mcnulty

Honors Theses

This thesis is concerned with the effect of music on mood in the workplace. Mood, or affect, is an important attribute in the working environment. For Example, positive affect is directly proportional to employee satisfaction, which can lead to more productivity and more efficiency. The mood of employees at a student café at the University of Dayton was assessed with and without background music while they worked. Data were collected over a two-week period from 20 student employees. Data included background questionnaires asking for demographic information such as music preference, music experience, and hours spent listening to music. The Positive …
