Crazy In Love With A Smooth Criminal: An In-Depth Look At Parasocial Relationships And How Celebrities Affect The Relationship, Alyssa Termini Apr 2015

Crazy In Love With A Smooth Criminal: An In-Depth Look At Parasocial Relationships And How Celebrities Affect The Relationship, Alyssa Termini

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Within this thesis, the celebrity careers of Beyoncé and Michael Jackson will be evaluated while keeping in mind the classic theory of parasocial interaction and parasocial relationships. Donald Horton and Richard Wohl penned the classic parasocial interaction theory in 1956 speaking of the persona, a celebrity, and the one-sided relationships spectators develop with personas. What is not said by Horton and Wohl, and what is said in this thesis, is that although the celebrity persona may not be aware they are involved in a parasocial relationship, their actions contribute to the creation of a parasocial relationship. By examining scholarly articles, …

Scoring A Goal Against The "Dumb Jock" Stereotype, Gabrielle Longo Apr 2015

Scoring A Goal Against The "Dumb Jock" Stereotype, Gabrielle Longo

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

The “dumb jock” stereotype prevalence is being questioned, along with its validity throughout this thesis. More negative articles about student-athletes are known by the public, while the successes have been buried beneath them. This thesis will discuss what the “dumb jock” stereotype is, what previous research has been done with it while determining the prevalence of the “dumb jock” stereotype and challenging its accuracy. Multiple student-athletes and non-student athletes from two different athletic divisions institutions were surveyed on the stereotype along with personal experience was pulled together to determine if this is a problem, and if it’s true. A majority …

Barbie: The Real Enemy?, Shelby Wolfinger Apr 2015

Barbie: The Real Enemy?, Shelby Wolfinger

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Barbie has been the subject of many debates about body image dissatisfaction and the negative impacts this doll has on adolescent children; my thesis will expand upon this and explore the possibility that the Barbie Doll can create long lasting effects on women throughout their adulthood. This argument examines the scholarships which suggests that Barbie has negative effects on young children. I then conduct primary research in the form of detailed surveys with women aged twenty-one and over. Using this mixed methods approach, I determine whether or not the problems created by Barbie among young children will affect women in …

Maddening: The Impact Of Genre On Frustration And Aggression, V. B. Stalletti Apr 2015

Maddening: The Impact Of Genre On Frustration And Aggression, V. B. Stalletti

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Video games have been thrust into the national spotlight after multiple mass shootings of recent years, begging the question of whether they corrupt our youth. At least three sides to the argument exist: those who believe violent video games result in increased levels of aggression, those who do not, and those who claim that aggression is linked with losing rather than violent content. While there have been plenty of studies focusing on losing and aggression in the action genre of video games, there has yet to be a conclusive study ranking and comparing the impact that other major genres have …

Helping The Adult Learner Succeed: How Community College Libraries In Massachusetts Are Serving This Growing Population, Katherine A. Turcotte Apr 2015

Helping The Adult Learner Succeed: How Community College Libraries In Massachusetts Are Serving This Growing Population, Katherine A. Turcotte

Librarian Publications

Education is something that is valued more each and every day. A growing number of people in today’s society realize the importance of education and the increasing need to return to school. As the number of adult learners continues to rise, so too does the need to reach out to this population to make sure they are being presented with the appropriate tools and resources needed to succeed. Because it is theorized that adults (those age 25+) who return to school are likely to enroll in a community college, rather than a four year university, this study looks specifically at …

The Dynamics Of Capital Accumulation In The Us: Simulations After Piketty, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer Apr 2015

The Dynamics Of Capital Accumulation In The Us: Simulations After Piketty, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We calibrate a sequence of four nested models to study the dynamics of wealth accumulation. Individuals maximize a utility function whose arguments are consumption and investment. They desire to accumulate wealth for its own sake — this is not a life-cycle model. A competitive firm produces a single good from labor and capital; the rate of return to capital and the wage rate are market-clearing. The second model introduces political lobbying by the wealthy, whose purpose is to reduce the tax rate on capital income. The third model introduces differential rates of return to capitals of different sizes. The fourth …

Forest Park Ecosystems Services Inventory: An Exploratory Study, Pablo Barreyro, Jenny Dempsey Stein Apr 2015

Forest Park Ecosystems Services Inventory: An Exploratory Study, Pablo Barreyro, Jenny Dempsey Stein

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

This report presents both qualitative and quantitative survey data concerning resident perceptions of ecosystem services in Portland’s Forest Park. Focus group best practices and ecosystem services in urban parks literature are reviewed. Representative focus groups were conducted to ascertain local awareness and understanding of the urban wilderness area’s ecosystem services, identify concurrent challenges and measure interest in a potential interpretive center. Individual surveys were also administered in order to connect issues with demographics and recreational use information. Regression analyses were conducted to examine related park usage, access and economic trends.

While the study is preliminary, the results reveal opportunities for …

Universities And Innovation In A Factor-Driven Economy: The Egyptian Case, Hala Elhadidi, David A. Kirby Apr 2015

Universities And Innovation In A Factor-Driven Economy: The Egyptian Case, Hala Elhadidi, David A. Kirby

Business Administration

The paper explores the role of universities in innovation in the modern knowledge economy, discusses the Triple Helix model and the entrepreneurial university, and then examines the application of these concepts in Egypt. The study, which specifically addresses the roles of universities in the innovation process in Egypt, is based on a series of in-depth interviews with eighteen Egyptian experts drawn from government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and academia. The paper shows that universities do play a role in the innovation process in Egypt, but that more needs to be done. It points to the challenges the universities encounter and calls …

Asian Dance/Movement Therapy Educators’ Experiences Of Teaching Dance/Movement Therapy In East Asia After Training In The Us, Ko Kyung Soon Apr 2015

Asian Dance/Movement Therapy Educators’ Experiences Of Teaching Dance/Movement Therapy In East Asia After Training In The Us, Ko Kyung Soon

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived learning and teaching experiences of native East Asian DMT educators who completed their DMT education in the US and then returned to their home countries. The researcher intended to learn how participants experienced their Western DMT education and how they adapted what they had learned to teaching DMT to students in East Asia. Six participants were successfully recruited from four East Asian countries (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan). Three types of data were gathered via a researcher-designed demographic questionnaire, the Asian American Values Scale-Multidimensional, and individual interviews. The Nvivo10 software program …

The Dynamics Of Capital Accumulation In The Us: Simulations After Piketty, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We develop a dynamic model where a competitive firm produces a single good from labor and capital, with market clearing rates of return. Individuals are heterogeneous in skills, with an endowment in capital/wealth increasing in skill. Individuals aspire to a standard consumption level, with a constant marginal propensity to consume out of income above this level. We define a steady state of this model as an equilibrium where factor returns and wealth shares remain constant. We calibrate the model to the US economy and obtain that a steady state exists. We then study three variants of the model: one with …

Overidentification In Regular Models, Xiaohong Chen, Andres Santos Apr 2015

Overidentification In Regular Models, Xiaohong Chen, Andres Santos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In models defined by unconditional moment restrictions, specification tests are possible and estimators can be ranked in terms of efficiency whenever the number of moment restrictions exceeds the number of parameters. We show that a similar relationship between potential refutability of a model and semiparametric efficiency is present in a much broader class of settings. Formally, we show a condition we name local overidentification is required for both specification tests to have power against local alternatives and for the existence of both efficient and inefficient estimators of regular parameters. Our results immediately imply semiparametric conditional moment restriction models are typically …

Overidentification In Regular Models, Xiaohong Chen, Andres Santos Apr 2015

Overidentification In Regular Models, Xiaohong Chen, Andres Santos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In the unconditional moment restriction model of Hansen (1982), specification tests and more efficient estimators are both available whenever the number of moment restrictions exceeds the number of parameters of interest. We show a similar relationship between potential refutability of a model and existence of more efficient estimators is present in much broader settings. Specifically, a condition we name local overidentification is shown to be equivalent to both the existence of specification tests with nontrivial local power and the existence of more efficient estimators of some “smooth” parameters in general semi/nonparametric models. Under our notion of local overidentification, various locally …

The State Of El Salvador: Human Rights And Violence In The Post War Era, Christine Caldera Apr 2015

The State Of El Salvador: Human Rights And Violence In The Post War Era, Christine Caldera

Honors Theses

During the Salvadoran Civil War (1979-1992), the government of El Salvador knowingly used forms of political violence such as disappearances and torture against the political opposition and other innocent civilians, including women and children. With the signing of the Peace Accords in 1992, El Salvador has since transitioned from an authoritarian regime to a democracy. This project focuses on how the change in regime type influenced the level of repression and respect for human rights in El Salvador. The research analyzes two conflict resolution mechanisms, the Peace Accords and Truth Commission, and the implementation of democratic practices such as elections …

Cocoa And Chocolate: Deconstructing The Development Paradigm In Cameroon, Chelsea Vanhook Apr 2015

Cocoa And Chocolate: Deconstructing The Development Paradigm In Cameroon, Chelsea Vanhook

Honors Theses

This project focuses specifically on the neo-liberal economic iteration of international development. Neo-liberalism is the idea that the deregulation of the private sector and expansion of free trade will lead to growth in undeveloped countries, which will effectively end poverty and increase the standard of living. My ethnography in Southwest Cameroon, however, shows that the experience and embodiment of development takes on a new understanding at the local, daily level. Exploring the paradox of cocoa and chocolate in Cameroon, I find that while the average Cameroonian is able to grow cocoa, he/she is unable to afford chocolate. This context calls …

Core Conversations For The Greater Good: An Exploration Of Intrapersonal Communication As A Self-Leadership Strategy In Social Entrepreneurs, William L. Cowen Iv Apr 2015

Core Conversations For The Greater Good: An Exploration Of Intrapersonal Communication As A Self-Leadership Strategy In Social Entrepreneurs, William L. Cowen Iv

All Theses And Dissertations

Social entrepreneurs actively create and apply business and communication strategies to support societal causes. They face many leadership and logistics challenges including the need to balance simultaneously mission advocacy and enterprise administration. This qualitative, phenomenological study examines how social entrepreneurs experience intrapersonal communication, conversations within oneself, as a self-leadership strategy that impacts mission and constituents. Within the vast intrapersonal communication field, this study specifically explored the concepts of self-talk, inner voice and inner dialogue, as well as imagined interactions, where conversations are rehearsed or replayed for perceived strategic advantage. The literature examined showed intrapersonal communication, self-leadership and social entrepreneurship all …

Are They Worth Reading? An In-Depth Analysis Of Online Trackers’ Privacy Policies, Candice Hoke, Lorrie Faith Cranor, Pedro Giovanni Leon, Alyssa Au

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

We analyzed the privacy policies of 75 online tracking companies with the goal of assessing whether they contain information relevant for users to make privacy decisions. We compared privacy policies from large companies, companies that are members of self-regulatory organizations, and nonmember companies and found that many of them are silent with regard to important consumer-relevant practices including the collection and use of sensitive information and linkage of tracking data with personally-identifiable information. We evaluated these policies against self-regulatory guidelines and found that many policies are not fully compliant. Furthermore, the overly general requirements established in those guidelines allow companies …
