Health Disclaimers And Website Credibility Markers: Guidance For Consumer Health Reference In The Affordable Care Act Era, Deborah H. Charbonneau

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This article reports on the current state of health disclaimers, online health resources, and credibility markers provided on public library websites (N = 105) for those seeking health information. In light of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), these findings have implications for consumer health reference services in public libraries. Approximately half of the public library websites in the study sample (n = 52, 49.5%) referred users to the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace website (HealthCare.gov). When referring to online consumer health resources, a small number of public library websites identified the authors of online health content (n = …

An Examination Of The Perceived Fairness Of Pregnancy Leave Practices, Pamela N. Wheeler Apr 2015

An Examination Of The Perceived Fairness Of Pregnancy Leave Practices, Pamela N. Wheeler

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As the number of women entering postsecondary education continues to increase (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014), universities will be tasked with ensuring that their pregnancy leave policies and practices are aligned with the principles of organizational justice. When organizations are aware of the perceptions of both decision makers and those affect by decisions, they are able to alter policies and practices in a way that promotes perceptions of fairness. The present study examines department head and faculty member perceptions of pregnancy leave practices in a university setting. This study is a replication/follow-up of two studies conducted in 2005 and …

Logged In And Engaged: Examining How Social Media Can Develop, Maintain, And Increase College Student Engagement, Matthew Moquin Apr 2015

Logged In And Engaged: Examining How Social Media Can Develop, Maintain, And Increase College Student Engagement, Matthew Moquin

Higher Education Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine how student affairs professionals, primarily those working in student involvement, utilized various social media technologies to increase their engagement with undergraduate college students. This study utilized Astin’s (1984) theory of student involvement, as well as a collection of literature surrounding the impact of social media on college students and their engagement in order to understand the influence social media can have when engaging with students. Since there is a limited amount of literature and research surrounding the subject of social media and its role in student engagement, a study was done that …

Public Service Motivation At A Small Suburban Municipality: An Analysis Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivators And The Characteristics Of Employees Of The Town Of Bradford West Gwillimbury, Tami Kitay Apr 2015

Public Service Motivation At A Small Suburban Municipality: An Analysis Of Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivators And The Characteristics Of Employees Of The Town Of Bradford West Gwillimbury, Tami Kitay

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper determines the motivators of employees who are highly attracted to public sector work. The researcher sought to replicate the 2005 Bright study, which found a strong relationship between public service motivation and the personal characteristics of employees, their employment status, and their intrinsic/extrinsic reward preferences, with the employees of the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. The results indicate a strong correlation, but not identical results, to the Bright study, with the common foundation between the two studies being a strong majority of local government employees who are intrinsically connected to and motivated by the public service.

Motor Skill Learning Between Selection And Execution., Jörn Diedrichsen, Katja Kornysheva Apr 2015

Motor Skill Learning Between Selection And Execution., Jörn Diedrichsen, Katja Kornysheva

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Learning motor skills evolves from the effortful selection of single movement elements to their combined fast and accurate production. We review recent trends in the study of skill learning which suggest a hierarchical organization of the representations that underlie such expert performance, with premotor areas encoding short sequential movement elements (chunks) or particular component features (timing/spatial organization). This hierarchical representation allows the system to utilize elements of well-learned skills in a flexible manner. One neural correlate of skill development is the emergence of specialized neural circuits that can produce the required elements in a stable and invariant fashion. We discuss …

The Human Motor System Alters Its Reaching Movement Plan For Task-Irrelevant, Positional Forces., Joshua G A Cashaback, Heather R Mcgregor, Paul L Gribble

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The minimum intervention principle and the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis state that our nervous system only responds to force perturbations and sensorimotor noise if they affect task success. This idea has been tested in muscle and joint coordinate frames and more recently using workspace redundancy (e.g., reaching to large targets). However, reaching studies typically involve spatial and or temporal constraints. Constrained reaches represent a small proportion of movements we perform daily and may limit the emergence of natural behavior. Using more relaxed constraints, we conducted two reaching experiments to test the hypothesis that humans respond to task-relevant forces and ignore task-irrelevant …

Seasonal Change In The Avian Hippocampus., David F Sherry, Scott A Macdougall-Shackleton Apr 2015

Seasonal Change In The Avian Hippocampus., David F Sherry, Scott A Macdougall-Shackleton

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The hippocampus plays an important role in cognitive processes, including memory and spatial orientation, in birds. The hippocampus undergoes seasonal change in food-storing birds and brood parasites, there are changes in the hippocampus during breeding, and further changes occur in some species in association with migration. In food-storing birds, seasonal change in the hippocampus occurs in fall and winter when the cognitively demanding behaviour of caching and retrieving food occurs. The timing of annual change in the hippocampus of food-storing birds is quite variable, however, and appears not to be under photoperiod control. A variety of factors, including cognitive performance, …

Developmental Specialization Of The Left Parietal Cortex For The Semantic Representation Of Arabic Numerals: An Fmr-Adaptation Study, Stephan E. Vogel, Celia Goffin, Daniel Ansari Apr 2015

Developmental Specialization Of The Left Parietal Cortex For The Semantic Representation Of Arabic Numerals: An Fmr-Adaptation Study, Stephan E. Vogel, Celia Goffin, Daniel Ansari

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The way the human brain constructs representations of numerical symbols is poorly understood. While increasing evidence from neuroimaging studies has indicated that the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) becomes increasingly specialized for symbolic numerical magnitude representation over developmental time, the extent to which these changes are associated with age-related differences in symbolic numerical magnitude representation or with developmental changes in non-numerical processes, such as response selection, remains to be uncovered. To address these outstanding questions we investigated developmental changes in the cortical representation of symbolic numerical magnitude in 6- to 14-year-old children using a passive functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation design, thereby …

California Student Counselors Reflect On A Study Abroad Experience In New Zealand, John M. Winslade, Lorraine Hedtke, Amy Douglass, Korina Echeverria, Dorry Lillard, Joanna Garcia, Stefany Zacarias, Samantha Stephens, Krystal Howard

Special Education, Rehabilitation & Counseling Faculty Publications

Seven counseling and guidance students from California participated in a study abroad program in which they were placed in a high school in Auckland, New Zealand, for one month. Their comments on the experience in response to researchers’ questions form the basis of this paper. They suggest that the participants benefited from being immersed in a culturally different context where they had to consider differences in school organization, counseling priorities, and students’ cultural mores. This immersion required them to think about their own professional values and to engage in high level learning, appropriate to masters level field experience work. They …

Cabo Verde: Do Babel Inicial À Emergência De Uma Ordem Linguística, Manuel Veiga Apr 2015

Cabo Verde: Do Babel Inicial À Emergência De Uma Ordem Linguística, Manuel Veiga

Journal of Cape Verdean Studies

Multilevel Marketing Diffusion And The Risk Of Pyramid Scheme Activity: The Case Of Fortune Hi‐Tech Marketing In Montana, Stacie A. Bosley, Kim Mckeage Apr 2015

Multilevel Marketing Diffusion And The Risk Of Pyramid Scheme Activity: The Case Of Fortune Hi‐Tech Marketing In Montana, Stacie A. Bosley, Kim Mckeage

School of Business All Faculty Scholarship

While statisticians have simulated the expected rate of growth in pyramid schemes, this research examines actual data on the spread of an alleged pyramid scheme in Montana. Fortune Hi-Tech Marketing (FHTM) was a multilevel marketing firm, sued by six states and the Federal Trade Commission and permanently shut down in 2014. Data from a settlement with the State of Montana provide a population of participants in a geographic region with definable markets and offer unique insights into local contagion. The authors analyze the pattern of FHTM adoption within a diffusion-of-innovation framework. The findings confirm that nearly all adoption results from …

Between History And Fiction: Visualizing Contemporary Polish Cultural Identity, Dominique Castle Apr 2015

Between History And Fiction: Visualizing Contemporary Polish Cultural Identity, Dominique Castle

Honors Projects

In this study, Polish cultural identity as derived from shared cultural memories is explored. The persistence of a strong Polish cultural identity even throughout a turbulent history is examined during the Soviet era through the analysis of three films, Andrzej Wajda's Ashes and Diamonds, Agnieszka Holland's To Kill a Priest, and Andrzej Wajda's Katyn. Because viewing films can result in the adoption of prosthetic memory which contribute to support of cultural memory, and because the creation of film itself can be considered scriptotherapy, each film is a lens to better understand how reaction to traumas of World War II and …

The Impact Of Early Life Adversity On Later Life Health, Abigail R Howard Apr 2015

The Impact Of Early Life Adversity On Later Life Health, Abigail R Howard

Open Access Dissertations

The preponderance of the literature on early life adversity suggests that adversity has negative effects on later life health; however, an emerging body of literature suggests that early life adversity may develop a sense of resilience in individuals. Drawing from life course perspective, the present research seeks to address this by asking how 16 early life adversities affect individuals' health over a 20 year period in adulthood. Further, the present research seeks to understand how individuals' perceptions of their health over the next few years may actually impact their health seven years later. In general, the more adversity a person …
