Journey Into Shame: Implications For Justice Pedagogies, Roger C. Bergman Apr 2015

Journey Into Shame: Implications For Justice Pedagogies, Roger C. Bergman

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

Being formed for justice can be a painful experience. Sometimes that pain takes the form of shame and contributes to the formation and exercise of conscience. But shame in other forms can be opposed to human flourishing and social justice. Psychologist James Fowler provides a spectrum of two forms of healthy shame and four forms of unhealthy shame, to which the author adds four other varieties, strategic shame and spiritual shame, at one end of the spectrum, and murderous shame and genocidal shame, at the other. Various experiences of shame are dramatically illustrated in Black Like Me, John Howard …

Prophetic Imagination: Confronting The New Jim Crow & Income Inequality In America, Cornel West

Engaging Pedagogies in Catholic Higher Education (EPiCHE)

On October 11, 2014, Cornel West delivered the keynote address to nearly 600 students at the regional Leadership & Social Justice Conference, hosted at Saint Mary’s College of California. The conference occurred two days before West was arrested in Ferguson, Missouri, during a demonstration to protest the killing of young Black men by White police officers, as in the case of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson. Speaking of the students, West said, "I would like to see these precious young people commit themselves to lives of integrity, honesty and decency, where they are vigilant against all forms of evil—White supremacists, …

The Easy Expensive Way Doesn't Work. Why Not Try The Difficult Cheap Way?, Karl A. Koehler

Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI) Policy Briefs

Smokestack chasing and related ad hoc efforts to create techno/commercial clusters are examples of failed economic development activities, because they are generally poorly integrated into the networks of interactions that support a local, state, or national economy. This is a general problem because it is difficult to characterize and understand such complex webs of interactions. Thus, it is the dynamic complexity of combined state innovation systems, related policy systems, and the broader economy that stands between state governors and legislators, their piecemeal enactment of ‘economic development initiatives’, and the economic growth they desire. This brief describes the social, governmental, and …

Blogging the Library

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been developing a new History Research Guide. I have spent time digging through all of the databases that Musselman Library subscribes to in order to categorize them on the new site. I was hoping to make the site as easy to navigate as possible so that students can easily find the right sources. I finally feel that I have reached a point where the new guide is ready to be tested. Selecting My Senior Star Book!, Abby M. Rolland

Blogging the Library

In the past two weeks, I’ve been working on the Whiting journal and re-housing the PR collection slides. I’m editing Kate Whiting’s travel journal, which is coming along nicely! I would’ve loved to meet her and talked to her about her adventures, including but not limited to why she and her family picked the boat and places they did and if they ever took any other trips. I’ve re-housed a lot of PR slides and they look way better in the new covers. The old covers get sticky and start to smell funky when they get old. I’ll post some …

Gender And Political Ambition, Jessica Preece, Olga Bogach Apr 2015

Gender And Political Ambition, Jessica Preece, Olga Bogach

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this proposal was to fund a field experiment that examined the ways in which political parties could increase women’s desire to run for office (their “political ambition”). Specifically, we worked with the Utah County Republican Party1 to organize a “Prospective Candidate Information Seminar” to which they invited over 11,000 active party members. However, there were several versions of the invitation that made different kinds of appeals (to civic duty or by talking about the part-time nature of political positions in Utah, for example).

Impact Of A State Evidence-Based Practice Legislative Mandate On County Practice Implementation Patterns And Inpatient Behavioral Health Discharge, Carl William Foreman Apr 2015

Impact Of A State Evidence-Based Practice Legislative Mandate On County Practice Implementation Patterns And Inpatient Behavioral Health Discharge, Carl William Foreman

Dissertations and Theses

Evidence-based practices and comparative effectiveness research are salient topics in public policy. Empirical validation of agency operating processes provides agencies and policy-makers the opportunity to address uncertainty surrounding effectiveness. While this is an increasingly accepted rational approach to public policy, the exact mechanism for how this operates is less known. In order to evaluate several theoretical assumptions and normative rational expectations inherent in this approach, the implementation of a state legislative mandate stating policy expectations for behavioral health evidence-based practices is assessed. This study sought to assess whether implementation patterns and associated outcomes reflect "rational mechanism" policy expectations. While the …

Who Benefits From A Minimum Wage Increase?, John W. Lopresti, Kevin J. Mumford Apr 2015

Who Benefits From A Minimum Wage Increase?, John W. Lopresti, Kevin J. Mumford

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper addresses the question of how a minimum wage increase affects the wages of low-wage workers. Most studies assume that there is a simple mechanical increase in the wage for workers earning a wage between the old and the new minimum wage, with some studies allowing for spillovers to workers with wages just above this range. Rather than assume that the wages of these workers would have remained constant, this paper estimates how a minimum wage increase impacts a low-wage worker’s wage relative to the wage the worker would have if there had been no minimum wage increase. The …

Factors That Lead To Hospital Readmissions And Interventions That Reduce Them: Moving Toward A Faith Community Nursing Intervention, Deborah J. Ziebarth Apr 2015

Factors That Lead To Hospital Readmissions And Interventions That Reduce Them: Moving Toward A Faith Community Nursing Intervention, Deborah J. Ziebarth

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Abstract

Hospital readmissions affect over 80 percent of all Medicare enrollees. Hospitals have a responsibility to their Medicare patients to keep them safe after discharge in their homes and communities. With changes in the Medicare reimbursement model, hospitals are examining efficient methods of decreasing avoidable re-admissions. A Faith Community Nurse Transitional Care Program may be just the answer to improve patient’s discharge experience, ensure post-discharge support and reduce re-hospitalization.

Methods

In preparations for testing a Faith Community Nurse Transitional Care Program Model, a systematic integrative review was needed. Using PRISMA, a search was done, inclusion criteria identified, and articles retrieved. …

I Feel The Need To Weed!: Maintaining An E-Book Collection, Jennifer Culley Apr 2015

I Feel The Need To Weed!: Maintaining An E-Book Collection, Jennifer Culley

The Southeastern Librarian

Libraries and library collections are evolving. Formats are changing as technology advances, and physical libraries are expanding into an ever increasing digital world. Acquiring more materials in several different formats, including electronic brings on the issue of what to do with it all. Anyone, or any entity, that collects books in print or electronic format will eventually come to the realization that their space is finite. In order to acquire new materials they must either expand their space or do that horrible "four letter word"... weed. The word itself sends shivers down the backs of librarians everywhere. How can any …

It's So Boring: Improving Library Orientation Sessions For First-Year Students, Melissa Dennis, Ashely S. Dees

The Southeastern Librarian

Instruction librarians sometimes face challenges in planning and implementing successful one-shot sessions for students. Librarians understand the strain of assessing student learning for the university as well as the desire to teach every student important information literacy skills. The difficulties are managing limited time, uncontrollable space, faculty collaboration, and student motivation in order to develop and achieve class goals. There are a variety of factors that can lead to student boredom or frustration with the library. Library layout can lead to a potentially frustrating first impression with students because of their unfamiliarity with the physical space, library classification system, and …

Abstract - The paper analyses composition and dynamics of social sciences research output in five South Asia countries as reflected in publications indexed in Scopus international bibliographical database and as summarised in Scimago database. The study which covers publications and citations data for the years 1996-2013 reveals that social sciences research in South Asia appears to be growing exponentially, doubling in publication size every six years. Within the confines of South Asia region, there is a great social science research divide between nations that publish papers in bulk and those that publish very little. India alone published prolific share (84%) …

The Feasibility Of Delivering A Home-Based Motivational Exercise Program To African-American Breast Cancer Survivors, Denise Spector, Claudio Battaglini Apr 2015

The Feasibility Of Delivering A Home-Based Motivational Exercise Program To African-American Breast Cancer Survivors, Denise Spector, Claudio Battaglini

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Most African-American breast cancer survivors do not meet current exercise recommendations for cancer survivors, which include both aerobic and strength-training exercises. This pilot study tested the feasibility of delivering a home-based exercise intervention to African-American breast cancer survivors. Sedentary African-American breast cancer survivors were recruited for a 16-week motivational home-based progressive aerobic and strength-training exercise pilot study. Participants completed weekly exercise logs and received weekly phone calls. To assess feasibility, we evaluated recruitment, retention, and adherence rates, as well as participant acceptance and safety. 17 women enrolled; 13 completed the intervention (76%). Participants had moderately-high adherence (70%) to walking goals, …

The importance of the extended African American family is well established, but there is little research on its influence on school age children’s physical activity. Methods: We recruited eight families in which grandparents and other adult relatives played a central role in child supervision. Semi-structured interviews with parents, other adult relatives, and children revealed various perspectives on the influences of culture and families on children’s weight-related behaviors. Results: Children were between the ages of 6 and 11, and five of the families resided in neighborhoods in which at …

Suppression Of Stereotype Threat Negatively Impacts Self-Evaluations And Interpersonal Outcomes, Zheng Li Apr 2015

Suppression Of Stereotype Threat Negatively Impacts Self-Evaluations And Interpersonal Outcomes, Zheng Li

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Stereotype threat is the situation when people under the pressure of confirming a negative stereotype that applies to them. Research shows that when people try to suppress the thought of being threatened, they tend to perform even worse. This study examines the effect of suppression of stereotype threat on females’ confidence on a gender-based stereotypical task (about spatial skills and science knowledge) and cross—gender interaction outcome. Participants first completed the moon task and then had a discussion with a male confederate before evaluating the willingness of future interaction and the perception of how the confederate views them. We hypothesized that …
