by

Dalal Albudaiwi

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2014

Under the Supervision of Professor Johannes Britz

Freedom of expression as a right has been protected by many nations' Constitutions and human right organizations. Freedom of expression has a long history in both the Western and Islamic worlds. Each viewed, defined, and analyzed the term differently based on their values and principles. Unsurprisingly, the Western and Islamic worlds do not completely …

Library Publishing Is Special: Selection And Eligibility In Library Publishing, Paul Royster Dec 2014

Library Publishing Is Special: Selection And Eligibility In Library Publishing, Paul Royster

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications

Traditional publishing is based on ownership, commerce, paid exchanges, and scholarship as a commodity, while library activities are based on a service model of sharing resources and free exchange. I believe library publishing should be based on those values and should not duplicate or emulate traditional publishing. University presses have mixed views of library publishing, and libraries should not adopt those attitudes. Library publishers are not gatekeepers; their mission is dissemination. Libraries need to publish because traditional publishing suffers from high rejection rates, required surrender of intellectual property, long production schedules, high cost of products, and limited dissemination. Nebraska’s Zea …

Encryption And Incrimination: The Evolving States Of Encrypted Drives, Shannon M. Oltmann Dec 2014

Encryption And Incrimination: The Evolving States Of Encrypted Drives, Shannon M. Oltmann

Information Science Faculty Publications

Individuals use encryption to safeguard many valid and legal applications but also to hide illegal activity. Several legal cases have drawn the limits of self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment regarding providing passwords to access illegal information content, such as child pornography. The cases illustrate that certain knowledge of evidence amounts to a compelling need for access and that a subpoena for hard drive contents is more likely to succeed than requiring a witness to provide a password. Since known documents are not legally protected and biometric data can be compelled as evidence, there is no reason that known digital documents, biometric …

On Getting Dressed, Sharon L. Stephenson

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

I lean against the chalkboard and wait for the young woman to speak. I feel especially put together because I am wearing an outfit; I bought all three pieces at the same time, indicating my financial stability and dedication to appearance.

It is a Friday, and this introductory physics student is casual in her sorority letter jersey, jeans and sneakers. Her hair is long, her skin porcelain; these traits do not distinguish her from her sorority sisters. She is exceptional, however, in her habit of obsessively leaning forward in her front-row desk, as if preparing to dive over the top. …

Are You Trying To Recruit Suicide Bombers Or Something?, Suzanne Weedon Dec 2014

Are You Trying To Recruit Suicide Bombers Or Something?, Suzanne Weedon

Criminal Justice

Suicide terrorism has been extensively studied, although few researchers have been able to arrive at definitive conclusions. Often overlooked is the explanatory potential of evolutionary psychology. This study presents an evolutionary model of suicide terrorism using the principles of kin selection theory and inclusive fitness and offers several predictions about suicide terrorists. To test these predictions, an experimental design was constructed in which participants randomly received one of nine separate scenarios in which they were told that they were a member of a marginalized ethnic group and asked if they would be willing to commit a suicide bombing against their …

Supply Chain Management And Investment Risk, Claude Chereau Dec 2014

Supply Chain Management And Investment Risk, Claude Chereau

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

We use a behaviorally motivated risk-return optimization framework to shed light on the important link between global supply chain management and investors’ risk-return choice. By improving the transparency and sustainability of the global supply chain, firms can reduce the probability of extreme losses, thus increasing investors’ expected utility and asset valuations. In order to effectively address the growing risks firms face in their global supply chains, systemic change is required. Managers can facilitate this change by increasing transparency and sustainability of their supply chains, especially in the area of carbon emissions reduction. We outline existing programs and tools that are leading …

The impact of SWFs on the economy is discussed in section four, section five discusses the significance of SWFs while, an …

A Study Of Technical Efficiency Of Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria (2007 - 2012), Auwalu I. Fagge Dec 2014

A Study Of Technical Efficiency Of Deposit Money Banks In Nigeria (2007 - 2012), Auwalu I. Fagge

Bullion

This paper examines the technical efficiency of deposit money banks (DMBS') in Nigeria. Measures of technical efficiency are derived in the Nigerian deposit money banks (DMBS') by implementing non-parametric, data envelopment analysis technique on a cross section of 24 banks taken from 2007 to 2013. The efficiency concepts, measurement and methodology were discussed. The existence of technical efficiency is established. The result suggests that the sources of overall technical inefficiency, the observed issues are due to poor input utilization (managerial inefficiency) and failure to operate almost productive scale size. Therefore, in this research the paper suggests or considers some important …

The Politics Of Happiness In The Workplace, Jacob Shay Sherretts Dec 2014

The Politics Of Happiness In The Workplace, Jacob Shay Sherretts

Political Science

Although the realm of political theory has often focused on what makes an individual happy, there is a lack of analysis on what factors within a career environment best serve to increase an individual’s satisfaction. By comparing indicators such as the region a workplace is located in, the ability of an individual to pursue career goals and the amount of autonomy an employee is allowed, a better understanding can be made on what conditions are optimal for satisfaction in the workplace. After these factors are compared, the findings are then analyzed under the lens of respected political thinkers in order …

Nexus Of Exchange Rate Deregulation And Agricultural Share Of Gross Domestic Product In Nigeria, Oyakhilomen Oyinbo, Falola Abraham, Grace Z. Rekwot

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The kernel of this study was to examine the causal relationship between exchange rate deregulation and the agricultural share of gross domestic product in Nigeria from an econometric perspective using time series data spanning a period of 26 years (1986 – 2011). Data on exchange rate and gross domestic product were analysed using augmented dickey fuller unit root test, unrestricted vector autoregression, pairwise granger causality and vector error correction model. The results showed the existence of unidirectional causality from exchange rate to agricultural share of gross domestic production and also, exchange rate deregulation had negative influence on agricultural share of …

Forecasting Nigerian Stock Market Returns Using Arima And Artificial Neural Network Models, Godknows M. Isenah, Olusanya E. Olubusoye

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The study reports empirical evidence that artificial neural network based models are applicable to forecasting of stock market returns. The Nigerian stock market logarithmic returns time series was tested for the presence of memory using the Hurst coefficient before the models were trained. The test showed that the logarithmic returns process is not a random walk and that the Nigerian stock market is not efficient. Two artificial neural network based models were developed in the study. These networks are TECH (4-3-1) and TECH (3-3-1)whose out-of-sample forecast performance was compared with a baseline ARIMA (3,0,1) model. The results obtained in the …

Relationship Between Money Supply And Government Revenues In Nigeria, Yakubu Musa, Umar Usman, Aminu B. Zoramawa

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The insights on the long run relationship amongst money supply and government revenues are of significant importance for monetary-fiscal policy formulation in a developing country like Nigeria. Taking into account the vital importance of these two variables, we empirically analyzed the long-run relationships and dynamic interactions between the money supply (broad money M2) and government revenues in Nigeria using an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach. The study spans the period 1970 to 2010. From the results, it is evident that there is the existence of a long run relationship between money supply and revenues when money supply is …

The Balance Sheet Channel Of Monetary Policy Transmission: Evidence From Nigeria, Olorunsola E. Olowofeso, Abiodun S. Bada, Kufre J. Bassey, Kumafan S. Dzaan

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper assesses the existence of a balance sheet channel of monetary policy transmission in Nigeria by examining whether variation in the official interest rate, with respect to the 2007- 2008 global financial crisis, feeds through to the deposit money banks (DMBs) balance sheets, and ultimately reflects in output and prices. Using quarterly macroeconomic data and stock from 2002 to 2012, the study employs an ordinary least squares (OLS) and autoregressive (VAR) framework to investigate the linkages between policy, DMB balance sheet, output and price. The results reveal the existence of a balance sheet channel in Nigeria with a significant …

Testing Volatility In Nigeria Stock Market Using Garch Models, Ngozi V. Atoi Dec 2014

Testing Volatility In Nigeria Stock Market Using Garch Models, Ngozi V. Atoi

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The contributions of error distributions have been ignored while modeling stock market volatility in Nigeria and studies have shown that the application of appropriate error distribution in volatility model enhances efficiency of the model. Using Nigeria All Share Index from January 2, 2008 to February 11, 2013, this study estimates first order symmetric and asymmetric volatility models each in Normal, Student’s-t and generalized error distributions with the view to selecting the best forecasting volatility model with the most appropriate error distribution. The results suggest the presence of leverage effect meaning that volatility responds more to bad news than it does …

Determinants Of Economic Growth In Nigeria, Kazeem B. Ajide Dec 2014

Determinants Of Economic Growth In Nigeria, Kazeem B. Ajide

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper investigates the role of Frazer Economic Freedom Index on FDI-growth relationship over the period spanning 1980 through 2010 using annual time series data. A Multivariate Regression approach was employed to estimate augmented growth models. Quite intriguingly, the impact of disaggregated economic freedom over aggregated composite index was found profoundly revealing. Emanated results show that the same set of variables like labour, life expectancy, degree of openness and economic freedom are factors affecting the level of economic growth in both but at different levels of significance. However, the estimates of disaggregated components of economic freedom data show that the …

Collaborative Models Of Care In The Appalachian Region Of Tennessee: Examining Relationships Between Level Of Collaboration, Clinic Characteristics, And Barriers To Collaboration, Jeffrey Ellison

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Decades of research have shown that there are significant advantages to maintaining close communicative and collaborative relationships between primary care and behavioral health providers. Fiscal, structural, and systemic barriers, however, often restrict the degree to which such interprofessional collaboration can occur. In the present study the authors examined relationships between primary care clinics in the Appalachian region’s characteristics (i.e., clinic type, rurality, and clinic size), barriers (i.e., fiscal, structural, and systemic) reported to using increased collaboration, and the level of collaboration used at a particular clinic.

For the present study 136 surveys were completed by providers working in primary care …

Measuring The Environmental Cost Of Hypocrisy, Arthur Caplan Dec 2014

Measuring The Environmental Cost Of Hypocrisy, Arthur Caplan

Arthur J. Caplan

This paper provides an example of howto estimate the marginal environmental cost of hypocrisy using revealed behavior and self-identification survey responses from coffee drinkers regarding their use of cardboard and plastic (i.e., non-reusable) cups. Coffee shops provide a convenient microcosm for assessing the impact of hypocritical behavior because of (1) readily available, cheap substitutes (i.e., reusable coffee cups), (2) a relatively accurate estimate of the environmental (in particular, carbon) cost associated with using non-reusable cups, and (3) the ability to delineate hypocritical behavior by observing a choice with relatively few potential confounding factors. Hypocritical behavior is measured as a geometric …
