Graduates’ Perspective Of Urban Teacher Academy Program Preparation And Benefits To Aspiring Educational Leaders, Pamela Cross Young, Rochonda Nenonene
Graduates’ Perspective Of Urban Teacher Academy Program Preparation And Benefits To Aspiring Educational Leaders, Pamela Cross Young, Rochonda Nenonene
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
As the dynamics of our interdependent society continue to change, the context of urban schools remain virtually unchanged (Delpit, 2012). “Students whose first language is not English, those living in poverty, and children of color disproportionately receive and experience the most disturbing educational experiences across the United States and in urban schools in particular” (Milner & Lomotey, 2014p. xvi). The current teacher preparation model provides little to no experience working in the urban setting. A considerable shift in our practices must occur if we are to improve the quality of education offered to our most vulnerable citizens.

Two academic support units, the library and the writing center, will be co-located on the library’s first floor starting Fall 2014. With a mandate to integrate services, the library was particularly interested in learning how the writing center addressed the evaluation, integration and attribution of sources, tasks similar to the work of reference librarians. Learn how we analyzed the writing center’s consultant reports in order to gain a deeper understanding of their work and prepare for a more effective service integration.
The Problem Of State Intervention In Post-Abolition Slavery: A Critique Of Consensus, Anthony Talbott, David Watkins
The Problem Of State Intervention In Post-Abolition Slavery: A Critique Of Consensus, Anthony Talbott, David Watkins
Political Science Faculty Publications
Slavery is now illegal by all states and under international law. Contrary to the hopes of abolitionists, this state of affairs has transformed rather than eradicated slavery as an institution. Furthermore, responses by states to post-abolition forms of slavery have often been less than ideal. This paper begins by comparing two state responses to slavery in the early 20th century: the federal peonage trials in Montgomery, Alabama from 1903-1905, and the federal response to an alleged epidemic of “white slavery” from 1909-1910, culminating in the passage of the White Slave-Traffic Act. Taken together, these responses engender pessimism about the state …

Response To Comments On 'Addams On Cultural Pluralism, European Immigrants, And African Americans', Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The author thanks Denise James and Charlene Haddock Seigfried for their thoughtful comments on her paper. Although they respond in different ways, they both picked up on questions and uncertainties that arose as she wrote the paper.
For some years, she has been trying to write about essays Addams addressed to African American audiences. For this paper, she decided to deal only with Addams’s writings between 1900 and 1910 in order to compare her essays for African American audiences with what she wrote at the same time for wider audiences. This approach enabled her to sort out when Addams’s writing …

Addams On Cultural Pluralism, European Immigrants, And African Americans, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In this paper, I will restrict the discussion to Addams’s writings during the twentieth century’s first decade, when she developed most of her thinking on cultural pluralism. By 1910, Dewey had not yet moved to cultural pluralism, Boas’s cultural relativism had not yet penetrated the intellectual world, and Mendelian genetics had not yet replaced Lamarckian assumptions regarding heredity. The Great War was yet to shatter illusions about Western civilization’s strength and rightness.

The basic communication course, with its roots in classical Greece and Rome, is frequently a required course in general education. The course often serves as our “front porch,” welcoming new students to the Communication discipline. This essay first outlines early traditions in oral communication instruction and their influence on future iterations of the course. In addition, because fundamental changes in higher education in more modern times affected emphases and delivery of the course, we focus on the relationship between general education and the basic course and the significant curricular changes to the course during the latter part of the 20th …
Cowboys, Angels, And Demons: American Exceptionalism And The Frontier Myth In The Cw's 'Supernatural', Joesph M. Valenzano
Cowboys, Angels, And Demons: American Exceptionalism And The Frontier Myth In The Cw's 'Supernatural', Joesph M. Valenzano
Communication Faculty Publications
The CW network series Supernatural (2005–) draws its text from the horror and fantasy genres as well as religious mythology. Concurrently, it transmits a core “American” mythos. As its protagonists keep watch along a supernatural frontier and eradicate threats to the American way of life, this program both reinforces and alters aspects of the frontier myth and the myth of American exceptionalism by depicting its main characters as representations of America writ large whose mission has grown from an appointment by God to being equals to God.
In this manner, Supernatural forwards a new American exceptionalism through the notion that …

Supplemental Media: Catalogue, Handlist, Lectures, Events and More
In preparing for Imprints and Impressions, we ran across many interesting words that have fallen out of the general lexicon. With this booklet, we have brought one back: handlist. Dean Kathleen Webb ran across it in a 1944 booklet from the J. Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City. Though the word no longer appears in most new dictionaries, it’s still in the Oxford English Dictionary:
A list of a particular type or category of things, presented in a readily consultable form; esp. a list of the books or manuscripts in a particular place, on a particular subject, etc.; …
Integrated Service Spaces: New Ways Of Assessing Collaboration., Hector Escobar, Heidi Gauder
Integrated Service Spaces: New Ways Of Assessing Collaboration., Hector Escobar, Heidi Gauder
Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Many academic libraries have participated in the growing trend in creating unified service desks, where users visit one desk to get help from a variety of library and other campus services. The University of Dayton’s Roesch Library, however, is exploring a different model. It is piloting a service that lends itself to true integration with external departments. Although unified service desks offer the convenience of one-stop assistance, the various units may still act as silos. Service integration facilitates better cross-training and less confusion for students who may need multiple forms of help in one common area.
The library began to …
Using Assessment To Leverage Collaboration With The Campus Writing Center, Heidi Gauder, Hector Escobar
Using Assessment To Leverage Collaboration With The Campus Writing Center, Heidi Gauder, Hector Escobar
Roesch Library Faculty Presentations
Purpose
Like many academic libraries, the University of Dayton’s Roesch Library houses a writing center. Currently located on the Library’s 2nd floor, it will soon move and become integrated with the library’s reference service. Since the writing center operates independently from the library (e.g., it is staffed by students and reports to different campus administrators), the library reference team, comprised of tenure-line faculty librarians, wanted to better understand writing center services. Given that research and writing are often intertwined, the library was particularly interested in learning how the writing center addressed the evaluation, integration and attribution of sources, tasks similar …

The academic library can play a crucial role in experiential learning for undergraduate students. In 2011, librarians at the University of Dayton built on the idea of student workers and partnered with the University Honors Program to offer customized experiential learning through paid internships. Librarians work one-on-one with students from a variety of disciplines. With experiences tailored to student interests, the library setting becomes a real world laboratory for skills training within the undergraduates’ disciplines or career interests. This article will describe the variety of experiences offered, resources needed, and ways of measuring and assessing for an effective internship program. …
Party Building Factors To Encourage Third Party Support Among 18-24 Year Olds, Amy Timmerman
Party Building Factors To Encourage Third Party Support Among 18-24 Year Olds, Amy Timmerman
Honors Theses
Third parties have always existed within American politics, yet have never claimed the ultimate political victory: the Presidency. Third parties often enjoy support from a strong, concentrated group of serious devotees and brief flashes of public support, but they often fail to attract the larger, more consistent backing enjoyed by the two major parties. A significant source of third party patronage is also found on the university campus, yet this support often fades shortly after college. Using survey data, this research analyzes the potential impact party building and media campaign strategies would have on third parties in gaining the lasting …
Sovereign Silence: Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act And Sex Work In Sonagachhi, Simanti Dasgupta
Sovereign Silence: Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act And Sex Work In Sonagachhi, Simanti Dasgupta
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Drawing upon ethnographic work with a grassroots sex workers’ organization in Calcutta, Durbar Samanwaya Samiti (Durbar), this article analyzes the relationship between subalternity and silence. I discuss how sex workers, especially new entrants, use silence as a subaltern strategy to resist state and non-state surveillance intended to oppose trafficking. The increased surveillance is a direct result of the global anti-trafficking narrative, led mainly by the United States, in which developing countries, like India, adopt measures to avoid being downgraded in the United States’ Trafficking in Persons Report. I contend that these national and international efforts have led to a quandary …
A Computer Based Detection Of Lung Nodules In Chest
A Computer Based Detection Of Lung Nodules In Chest
Stander Symposium Projects
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancerous disease in the United States. Lung cancer usually exhibits its presence with the formation of pulmonary nodules. Nodules are round or oval-shaped growth present in the lung. Chest radiographs are used by radiologists to detect and treat such nodules, but nodules are quite difficult to detect with human eye and are sometimes misinterpreted with lesions present. Thus, automated analysis of such data is very essential and would be of valuable help in lung cancer screening. A new Computer Aided Detection (CAD) system in chest radiography is proposed in this paper. The algorithmic …
A Room Full Of Rocking Chairs: Urban Appalachian Student Experiences In Community College
A Room Full Of Rocking Chairs: Urban Appalachian Student Experiences In Community College
Stander Symposium Projects
Urban Appalachian college students (UACS) face cultural and institutional barriers that impact their ability to persist and complete college. Designed to explore UACS experiences at a large urban community college, this study provides insight into Appalachian culture and identity as they impact their success in higher education. UACSs are more likely to come from a low-income family, and be the first in their family to attend college. First-generation college students more often lack the social and cultural capital needed to successfully navigate college, further increasing the risk of failure (Bradbury, 2009). Colleges and universities must seek out ways to improve …
An Undivided Heart: How Mary Unites What Sin Divides According To John Paul Ii's Theology Of The Body
Stander Symposium Projects
Today, personhood is often threatened by the tendency to divide the human person into two contrasting parts: body and soul. Many times, this causes the human person to be reduced to a disembodied spiritual being or a disposable object rather than a whole person called to love and be loved. In his teachings known as the Theology of the Body, John Paul II uses a personalistic approach to illuminate the human person as the integration of body and soul. Scripturally based, Theology of the Body is the study of God’s reflection in the human body and human sexuality. Using John …
Advancing Segmentation Techniques For Rigid-Body Shape-Changing Mechanism Design Specific To Variable Geometry Extrusion Dies
Stander Symposium Projects
This research is part of a larger project on designing extrusion dies that create parts with complex variation in cross section. The research presented is on segmentation theory, the realization of a set of rigid bodies and joints that best approximate a set of curves that define a shape change. These curves differ from each other by a combination of planar displacement, shape variation, and notable differences in arc length. Among various shape-changing technologies, rigid-body mechanisms composed of traditional machine elements offer many advantages including carrying large loads while achieving large displacements. Although some of the theory for synthesizing rigid-body …

Research Exercise: Analyzing Shield Law Cases In The Midwest
Stander Symposium Projects
Most states have enacted shield laws that allow journalists to protect the identities of confidential sources. The federal government has considered a federal shield law several times over the years but has yet to enact such legislation. These papers analyze how state courts determine who is and who is not a journalist under states’ shield laws. Also considered is whether the press can legally refuse to identify anonymous commentators on news organizations’ websites.
Brain Machine Interface For Controlling A Robotic Arm

This project takes Electroencephalography (EEG) data and correlates it with specific robotic actions. The process is implemented using a 3 phase system that includes EEG signal acquisition, data classification, and robotic action encoding. This project utilizes the Emotiv EPOC headset that uses 14 electrodes which detects brain activity and wirelessly transmits raw data to a personal computer. The project utilizes Emotiv software to classify and translate and encode this raw EEG signal into a command to control a robotic arm. This Brain Machine Interface (BMI) research has many potential applications; for example, it could help the handicapped use robots to …
Assessing Aesthetic Preferences For Faces With Measures Of Ocular Gaze
Assessing Aesthetic Preferences For Faces With Measures Of Ocular Gaze
Stander Symposium Projects
Though one may assume that the reactions to two nearly identical works of art would be similar, the medium in which art is presented can influence an individual’s perception of the work (Locher et al., 2006). The present study evaluates aesthetic preferences for faces, specifically, relating to those influenced by art; this is done by comparing reactions when viewing classic portraits and photographic renderings of those portraits. Simultaneously portraits and photographs of faces, matched for variables such as gender, artistic medium, ethnicity, face shape, facial hair, hair color, eye color, and facial position (full or profile), are shown to participants …
Research Exercise: Characterization Of Wnt Signaling During Dorsal Versus Ventral Iris-Derived Newt Lens Regeneration
Stander Symposium Projects
There are many animals that have the ability to regenerate different tissues during embryonic stage, but only newts have the ability to regenerate whole organs throughout their entire life. Our primary focus is lens regeneration through transdifferentiation of pigment epithelial cells (PECs). This process has been previously shown to be highly topological, that is, trasdifferentiation always occur from the dorsal iris and never from the ventral iris. In order to understand why we have regenerative and non-regenerative tissues in dorsal and ventral iris, respectively, we examined the role and expression of several genes. My research aimed to discover the potential …
Design Of Variable-Geometry Dies For Polymer Extrusion
Design Of Variable-Geometry Dies For Polymer Extrusion
Stander Symposium Projects
Polymer extrusion is the process of forcing a melted plastic through a die to create a continuous part with a constant cross-section dictated by the die’s shape. The goal of this project is to develop a die that can change the cross-section created in the plastic during extrusion. This technology introduces extrusion to a host of products that historically have been manufactured by more expensive and time-consuming techniques like injection molding. Variables considered in order to make the dies both practical and efficient include limiting the degrees of freedom, managing unnecessary die openings, and creating joints that can act as …
Effects Of One's Attachment Style On Willingness And Reactions To Self-Sacrifice And Subsequent Relationship Satisfaction.
Stander Symposium Projects
One behavior used to sustain a relationship is self-sacrifice, and one’s willingness to sacrifice has been shown to be positively associated with relationship satisfaction (Van Lange et al., 1997). Depending on the motivations behind self-sacrifice, this practice can lead to improved or poorer couple functioning (Impett, Gable, & Peplau, 2005; Stanley, Whitton, Sadberry, Clements, & Markman, 2006). Those high in anxious attachment experience and express anger due to their fear of abandonment, whereas those high in avoidant attachment experience and express anger due to their avoidance of intimacy (Lafontaine & Lussier, 2005). The current study explored the possibility that level …

Exploring Data-Driven Electricity Feedback On Energy Conservation Behavior In The University Of Dayton Student Neighborhood
Stander Symposium Projects
In general, homeowners do not have a concrete idea of how much energy their houses are using at any given moment. This energy “invisibility” is thought to be a barrier toward people adopting more sustainable behaviors. This study involves installing energy monitors in houses in the University of Dayton student neighborhood to analyze two important questions: whether the monitors teach students about the relationship between their activities and energy consumption, and whether the monitors influence students to adjust their household behaviors. Ideally, conclusions will be drawn from quantitative data collected from the monitors and the university’s energy provider as well …
Growth Kinetics Of Carbon Microcoils
Growth Kinetics Of Carbon Microcoils
Stander Symposium Projects
Carbon is one of the most versatile materials of the periodic table and exists in various allotropic forms and shapes including fullerene, carbon nanotube, graphene. Coiled carbon filaments exhibit very attractive morphology and properties such as absorption of electromagnetic waves and high conductivity because of their shape and carbon structure. Bidirectionally grown double helical carbon microcoils (CMCs) are one type of coiled carbon filaments with unique catalytic activity. In this study, CMCs were synthesized using a chemical vapor deposition method. Growth mechanism of CMCs was explained by a simple exponential catalyst decay model.
