and by technology. Social work offers a panoramic perspective on individuals and issues, insisting on the importance of the ecology of interaction between person and environment. Given this historic strength, social workers cannot ignore the explosive growth and pervasive impact of technology or fail to recognize its role in shaping culture. Beyond its capacity to enhance whatwe offer to our clients, technology is a prompt, a demand to reimagine our core values in the context of a changing social space and to develop amechanics of practice that is amenable to rapid evolution. With this commentary we hope to initiate dialogue: …

E-Advocacy In Human Services, Lauri Goldkind
Social Service Faculty Publications
E-advocacy, or the constellation of electronic tools used for policy advocacy, offer cost-effective approaches for engaging constituents to create social change. Providers of human services may face challenges when trying to implement these tools. While many electronic tools have low barriers for entry, other factors may inhibit their use in agencies. This article explores the organizational characteristics related to the use of electronic advocacy strategies. Based on a survey of nonprofit executives, the study uses path modeling to describe the connections between organizational characteristics and the use of electronic advocacy tools. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Service members and veterans face a myriad of health mental health and social challenges stemming from the combat and operational stressors experienced during deployment and the challenges of reintegration to civilian life. To intervene effectively with this population social workers must be knowledgeable about these issues and the cultural context within which they occur. While schools of social work across the country are developing course work in military social work, little is known about the learning outcomes of these courses. This paper describes a military social work course that was developed to increase student preparedness to work with a military …

In The Debt We Trust: The Unconstitutionality Of Defaulting On American Financial Obligations, And The Political Implications Of Their Perpetual Validity, Zachary K. Ostro
In The Debt We Trust: The Unconstitutionality Of Defaulting On American Financial Obligations, And The Political Implications Of Their Perpetual Validity, Zachary K. Ostro
Student Articles and Papers
Starting in August 2011, America has undergone a series of fiscal and political crises surrounding the threat of defaulting on the national debt and the need to raise the debt ceiling. These crises have caused tremendous stress and irreparable harm to our financial markets and political system, causing a downgrade in United States debt for the first time in history, forcing drastic budget cuts, and contributing to a sixteen-day government shutdown this past October. What is most unfortunate, however, is that all of this was preventable for the simple reason that, as a matter of constitutional law, defaulting on the …

This article ties research on the learning preferences of Millennials to elements of active and game-based learning. The author describes the process of creating an innovative game based on Candy Land to teach undergraduates about information ethics and makes recommendations for creating non-digital games for instructional purposes based on this experience.
Defining Traditional American Indian Identity Through Anishinaabe Cultural Perspective, Joshua Edward Maudrie
Defining Traditional American Indian Identity Through Anishinaabe Cultural Perspective, Joshua Edward Maudrie
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This study addresses the question of American Indian Identity, specifically, what makes an Indian an Indian from a traditional Anishinaabe Indian cultural perspective? Perspectives were gained through life experiences as an active member of Anishinaabe Indian communities in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan, as well as traditional cultural ceremonies. There are two primary reasons for this study: first to provide insight into the traditional cultural perspective of American Indian identity for non-Indians and its relevancy in present day; and second, to start a discussion within tribal nations about utilizing their traditional culture in governance and membership issues. For this Qualitative study, …

Is Peer Health Education Healthy: Examining The Susceptibility Of Peer Educators To Emotional Contagion, Lucas Joseph Youngvorst
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This paper examines the role of peer educators within Peer Health Education programs, specifically focusing on their susceptibility to emotional contagion. As various studies have identified the potential effect of emotional contagion within positions similar to PHE (ie. counseling, therapy, etc..), the susceptibility of peer educators to this contagion must be analyzed. The present study seeks to draw connections between PHE and emotional contagion, building our understanding of both topics and how they connect. Peer educators from across the country were contacted and asked to complete an online survey, which examined their general and PHE specific demographics, susceptibility to emotional …

County Government Structure And Expenditure, Dovlet H. Babajanov
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
This research inquired into whether government structure has any influence on expenditure. On the national sample of U.S. county governments several hypotheses were tested. To estimate the influence of structure on expenditure, a linear regression analysis was used. The findings suggest that government structure does have an impact on agencies' expenditure levels. Specifically, findings indicate that traditional Commission structure tends to spend the least, followed by Commission-mayor and the most expensive being Commission-manager.
The Signs We Speak: An Exploration Of The Loss Of Precision And Meaning In Language Today., Emilie Finney
The Signs We Speak: An Exploration Of The Loss Of Precision And Meaning In Language Today., Emilie Finney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My interest is in the beauty and power of language. I have sought to understand language on a systemic level. I have broken language down to alter signified meaning, exalted extinct words, mourned the loss of formal language, and explored the confines of common vernacular. My artwork addresses meaning within the context of Semiotics and Linguistics. I have investigated the Semiotic theories and philosophies of Roland Barthes, Jacques Ranciere, Pierre Guiraud, and Erving Goffman. As outlined by Roland Barthes, our language is a semiotic system used to communicate meaning. My work is also informed by the rules of Linguistics and …
A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein
A Spatial Analysis Of Chachapoya Mortuary Practices At La Petaca, Chachapoyas, Peru, Lori Epstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diversity of Chachapoya mortuary practices is not well understood archaeologically, even though the region has received some attention for the monumental constructions and visually striking mortuary complexes located high on open cliff faces. This may be due to the difficult accessibility and often poor state of preservation consistent with many Chachapoya mortuary and occupation sites. This thesis reconstructs mortuary practices at La Petaca in the Chachapoyas region of Peru, applying paleodemographic and GIS methodological approaches to facilitate and improve the bioarchaeological study of commingled skeletal remains in an open, disturbed communal funerary context. Research focused on SUP CF-01, a natural …

Video Game Self-Efficacy And Its Effect On Training Performance, Skilan Ortiz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effects of using serious games for training on task performance and declarative knowledge outcomes. The purpose was to determine if serious games are more effective training tools than traditional methods. Self-efficacy, expectations for training, and engagement were considered as moderators of the relationship between type of training and task performance as well as type of training and declarative knowledge. Results of the study offered support for the potential of serious games to be more effective than traditional methods of training when it comes to task performance.
Positive Political Outcomes From Feminist Islam In Afghanistan: Identifying Development Program Features That Raise The Status Of Women, Margaret Courtney Barnard
Positive Political Outcomes From Feminist Islam In Afghanistan: Identifying Development Program Features That Raise The Status Of Women, Margaret Courtney Barnard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Existing literature establishes a connection between elevating the status of women in less developed countries and positive political outcomes including: increased national stability, decreased likelihood of civil conflict, and international stability. In particular, the literature suggests that working within the dominant cultural framework of a country makes development projects more successful. This thesis expands upon these bodies of literature and examines the outcomes of the work of two major development agencies in Afghanistan, the UN and USAID in the area of women's education and healthcare. The thesis analyzes some specific characteristics that influence the effects of these programs in the …
The Effects Of Divided Government On Women's Organizations' Political Activity In Developed Democracies, Alexandria Wilson
The Effects Of Divided Government On Women's Organizations' Political Activity In Developed Democracies, Alexandria Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between divided government and women's organizations' political activity. In the literature divided government is associated with political openness leading to a decline in the repression of alternative political views and increased organizational activity. In this thesis I hypothesize that divided government is related to increased participation in political activity by women's organizations. Political activity is expected to increase during periods of divided government due to increased opportunities to influence formal government as political parties and elected officials compete for public support. This study analyzes political activity by organizations associated with the women's movement in two …

Romantic Relationship Stages And Social Networking Sites: Uncertainty Reduction Strategies And Perceived Relational Norms On Facebook, Jesse Fox, Courtney Anderegg
Romantic Relationship Stages And Social Networking Sites: Uncertainty Reduction Strategies And Perceived Relational Norms On Facebook, Jesse Fox, Courtney Anderegg
Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts
Due to their pervasiveness and unique affordances, social media play a distinct role in the development of modern romantic relationships. This study examines how a social networking site is used for information seeking about a potential or current romantic partner. In a survey, Facebook users (N= 517) were presented with Facebook behaviors categorized as passive (e.g., reading a partner’s profile), active (e.g., ‘‘friending’’ a common third party), or interactive (e.g., commenting on the partner’s wall) uncertainty reduction strategies. Participants reported how normative they perceived these behaviors to be during four possible stages of relationship development (before meeting face-to-face, after meeting …

Recursive Complements And Propositional Attitudes, Jill De Villiers, Kathryn Hobbs, Bart Hollebrandse
Recursive Complements And Propositional Attitudes, Jill De Villiers, Kathryn Hobbs, Bart Hollebrandse
Philosophy: Faculty Publications
The focus of this chapter is in what role syntactic recursion might play in the representation of propositional attitudes. Syntactic complements under mental and communication verbs are recursive, and so also are the propositional attitudes. There is strong evidence that children take some time to master the first order syntactic complementation typical of verbs of communication. When they do acquire these structures, the evidence suggests that this helps children reason about propositional attitudes such as false beliefs. In this chapter we seek to deepen our understanding of the crucial property of sentential and attitude embedding. Is the crucial aspect that …
Evaluating The Efficiency Of Water Privatization In Senegal, Patrick Hoguet Norton
Evaluating The Efficiency Of Water Privatization In Senegal, Patrick Hoguet Norton
Whittier Scholars Program
According to the World Bank, Senegal stands out as one of the most successful examples of water privatization especially out of Global South Nations; but in a world where drinking water is so scarce, expensive, and unregulated, it is important to thet the validity of these positive claims about Senegal’s water privatization program. Do the Senegalese people feel the same way? My project analyzes newspaper sources, journal articles, and Senegalese media to gauge the validity of these positive claims and to see how the Senegalese people and the international community are responding to water privatization in Senegal. In addition, my …
Merit, Luck, And Historical Recognition: A More Comprehensive Treatment Of Justice In Public Administration, Nicole M. Elias, Courtney Jensen
Merit, Luck, And Historical Recognition: A More Comprehensive Treatment Of Justice In Public Administration, Nicole M. Elias, Courtney Jensen
Publications and Research
John Rawls' A Theory of Justice has served as an important basis for theorizing merit, deservedness, and fairness, and in turn, continues to influence the intellectual development of many disciplines, including political thought, public administration, and the practical application of democratic governance. Yet, Rawls' failure to account for luck and historical difference renders his work an incomplete framework for pursing the end of justice in public administration. We argue for a more comprehensive treatment of merit, deservedness, and fairness, one that incorporates luck and takes into account social values rooted in historical preference and identity.
Same-Sex Couples' Lived Experiences Of The Repeal Of The Defense Of Marriage Act's (Doma) Section Three, Alicia Anne Bosley
Same-Sex Couples' Lived Experiences Of The Repeal Of The Defense Of Marriage Act's (Doma) Section Three, Alicia Anne Bosley
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Same-sex couples are affected by the social and political climates in which they live, as these create the difference between acceptance and legalization, and discrimination and prohibition, of their relationships. This contingence is made increasingly impactful by the privileges and protections afforded to married couples by the federal government; same-sex couples, along with other couples that choose not to, or cannot, marry, are excluded from these benefits. Following the June 26, 2013 ruling that Section Three of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined marriage as between a man and a woman, was unconstitutional, same-sex couples were given access …
It Staff Turnover Intentions, Job Modification, And The Effects Of Work Recognition At Large Public Higher Education Institutions, Steven C. Burrell
It Staff Turnover Intentions, Job Modification, And The Effects Of Work Recognition At Large Public Higher Education Institutions, Steven C. Burrell
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Information Technology (IT) leaders in public higher education are under increased pressures to leverage innovations in technology to address their institution’s strategic imperatives. CIOs modify jobs by increasing responsibilities or changing the tasks that IT workers perform. IT staff who experience job modification are susceptible to lower job satisfaction and increased turnover intentions. IT leaders in other industries have successfully used work recognition to improve job satisfaction but there is limited research pertaining to these conditions among higher education institutions. This study sought to determine the perceptions and effects of work recognition and job modification on the turnover intentions of …

Teaching And Transforming Through Stories: An Exploration Of Macro- And Micro-Narratives As Teaching Tools, Jaclyn R. Devine, Todd Quinn, Paulita Aguilar
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Narratives are one of the most powerful teaching tools available, and as Clark and Rossiter (2008) argue, “constructing a coherent narrative is how, in fact, we learn” (p. 66). We investigate the role of narrative in adult learning in library instructional contexts, introducing the concepts of micro-narratives and macro-narratives, and illustrating these ideas using relevant teaching examples. Macro-narratives are stories that are common across many cultures and contain universal themes and lessons. Micro-narratives are stories that are uniquely relevant to the members of a particular group. We argue that both types can be used to create meaningful library learning experiences.

Understanding The Role Of Social Groups In Radicalisation, Kira Harris, Eyal Gringart, Deirdre Drake
Understanding The Role Of Social Groups In Radicalisation, Kira Harris, Eyal Gringart, Deirdre Drake
Australian Security and Intelligence Conference
The inability to form psychological profiles of individual members across a variety of extremist groups, as well as the recognition in extremism and terrorism research indicates that no adequate personality profile exists. This requires an analysis of other factors that influence the radicalisation process. By drawing on social identity theory, this paper offers a psycho-social explanation for how people define themselves in relation to their social group, as well as how the intra-group relationships can lead to extreme behaviour and resistance to counter efforts. These groups promote a salient social identity that becomes intrinsic to the self to the extent …
