Asean's Weak Role In Bilateral Dispute Settlement: The Case Of Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan), Gabriela Steinemann Jan 2014

Asean's Weak Role In Bilateral Dispute Settlement: The Case Of Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan), Gabriela Steinemann

Asian Review

This paper examines the role of ASEAN in the resolution of territorial conflicts between its member states. It studies the border dispute cases of Vietnam-Cambodia and Indonesia-Malaysia, before turning its focus to the Thai-Cambodian conflict over Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan). The domestic political contexts in both countries provided important reasons for the weak role ASEAN has been able to play. But the association's struggle to find a meaningful place in dispute settlement is not limited to Preah Vihear, and it will likely continue as long as member states are unwilling to make use of the mechanisms they once created. At …

Comparing The Campaign Financing Patterns Of Male And Female Congressional Candidates, Sara M. Thane Jan 2014

Comparing The Campaign Financing Patterns Of Male And Female Congressional Candidates, Sara M. Thane

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Nearly 100 years after gaining the right to vote, women are nowhere near reaching equal representation in the United States Congress. Although this is likely due to a range of factors, the possibility that women remain underrepresented because of a campaign financing disadvantage is explored in this research. While there is a rich body of literature comparing how male and female Congressional candidates finance their campaigns, previous research has not compared the net worth of male and female members of Congress or how net worth affects the amount of campaign receipts a candidate receives. Additionally, the self-financing patterns of male …

Build It And Will They Come?: Participatory Digital Archives, Hesitant Users, And The Emerging Archival Commons, Dallas C. Hanbury Jan 2014

Build It And Will They Come?: Participatory Digital Archives, Hesitant Users, And The Emerging Archival Commons, Dallas C. Hanbury

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In the mid-2000s, archivists introduced a range of Web 2.0-based participatory features into digital archives to make them more accessible to patrons. Some archivists hoped the increased accessibility of digital archives would lead to the creation of virtual communities of users that would eventually participate in archival workflows, especially description. Archivists’ desire culminated in the idea of the archival commons, a network-crowd sourcing model highly dependent on intensive user participation. Users however, only minimally used digital archives’ participatory features during the mid-‘00s. Recent scholarship though, reveals that users have begun to increasingly use the participatory aspects of digital archives, suggesting …

Google Vs. The Library (Part Ii): Student Search Patterns And Behaviors When Using Google And A Federated Search Tool, Helen Georgas Jan 2014

Google Vs. The Library (Part Ii): Student Search Patterns And Behaviors When Using Google And A Federated Search Tool, Helen Georgas

Publications and Research

This study examines the information-seeking behavior of undergraduate students within a research context. Student searches were recorded while the participants used Google and a library (federated) search tool to find sources (one book, two articles, and one other source of their choosing) for a selected topic. The undergraduates in this study believed themselves to be skilled researchers, but their search queries and behaviors did not support this belief. Students did not examine their topics to identify keywords and related terms. They relied heavily on the language presented to them via the list of research topics and performed natural language or …

More Than Just Plain Old Technology Adoption: Understanding Variations In Teachers' Use Of An Online Planning Tool, Heather Leary, Victor R. Lee, Mimi Recker

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper examines variability in teachers’ usage patterns as they interacted with an online teacher support tool, the Curriculum Customization Service (CCS), as part of their professional work. The CCS is a web application that supports teachers in planning, adapting, sequencing, and enacting differentiated instruction in Earth science education. By mining the usage log files of over 40 teachers who used the CCS over a yearlong period, we analyzed for variability using a framework developed in marketing research to characterize appropriation of technology. This analysis helped reveal different kinds of teachers’ patterns along two dimensions: frequency and variability of use. …

The Sexual History Polygraph Examination And Its Influences On Recidivism, Roger Cook, William Barkley, Peter B. Anderson Jan 2014

The Sexual History Polygraph Examination And Its Influences On Recidivism, Roger Cook, William Barkley, Peter B. Anderson

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

The polygraph in postconviction sex offender testing is used to assist in the treatment and supervision of convicted sex offenders by more than 70% of the jurisdictions that supervise these offenders in the United States. Prior researchers have failed to convincingly demonstrate how the polygraph can be used to target risk behaviors and reduce recidivism. Consequently, the use of the sexual history polygraph examination (SHPE) has not been demonstrated to reduce recidivism. We sought answers as to how the SHPE influences the behaviors of sexual offenders required to undergo a SHPE, and whether or not there is a difference in …

The Will To Lead: The Dynamic Integration Of Intrinsic Motivation And Social Change Leadership, Joshua M. Garrin Jan 2014

The Will To Lead: The Dynamic Integration Of Intrinsic Motivation And Social Change Leadership, Joshua M. Garrin

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Discourse on the psychosocial substrates of human motivation reflects a hot-button theme in contemporary leadership research circles. For many aspiring leaders, role models and social support provide an undercurrent for instilling leadership attributes. Yet for others, the drive to optimize leadership potentials is a naturally occurring, internally guided event that is continually reinforced through self-regulatory processes. As such, questions remain as to which intrinsic motives underpin the leadership potentials that have implications for social change agency. To date, the extant literature fails to offer a comprehensive model that highlights (a) the self-motives that have preeminent applicability to intrinsic motivation, (b) …

The Power Of Workplace Wellness: A Theoretical Model For Social Change Agency, Joshua M. Garrin Jan 2014

The Power Of Workplace Wellness: A Theoretical Model For Social Change Agency, Joshua M. Garrin

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

As millions of individuals face the complex challenge of adopting prohealth behavior as a core lifestyle attribute, there is an ever-increasing need to take an opportunistic approach to practicing and internalizing such behavior. Time constraints, prioritization, and time mismanagement widely contribute to the perceived inability of individuals to adhere to prohealth behavior. Given vocation as a demand that constitutes approximately one third of daily life activity, the organizational setting has emerged as a context that can potentially offer a vast array of viable workplace wellness (WW) opportunities. Such initiatives go beyond framing organizations as vehicles for health behavior promotion—instead, the …

The Role Of Spiritual Faith Healers In Reducing Or Reinforcing The Hiv Stigma: A Qualitative Study, Nkeke Lesolang Jan 2014

The Role Of Spiritual Faith Healers In Reducing Or Reinforcing The Hiv Stigma: A Qualitative Study, Nkeke Lesolang

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The role of spiritual faith healers in managing various conditions of ill-health has been studied and debated. The aim of this study was to explore spiritual faith healers’ understanding and conceptualisation of HIV/AIDS stigma and the role they play in reducing or reinforcing HIV/AIDS stigma in their communities. A qualitative approach, and in particular, the grounded theory methodology was used. The application of this methodology included personal interviews with eight practising spiritual faith healers in Limpopo Province (South Africa), while additional information was gleaned from the literature review. The researcher focused on the participants’ conceptualisation of HIV stigma, from the …

The African Conception Of Death: A Cultural Implication, Lesiba Baloyi, Molebogeng Makobe-Rabothata Jan 2014

The African Conception Of Death: A Cultural Implication, Lesiba Baloyi, Molebogeng Makobe-Rabothata

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

From an African perspective death is a natural transition from the visible to the invisible spiritual ontology where the spirit, the essence of the person, is not destroyed but moves to live in the spirit ancestors’ realm dead. It signifies an inextricable spiritual connection between the visible and invisible worlds. This chapter focuses on how traditional Africans conceive and deal with the bereavement process. We adopt the African worldview and philosophy as our framework. We dispute the often held view in mainstream psychology that behavior, in this case the concept of death and the bereavement processes have universal applicability, articulation, …

The participants are 40 male adolescents in the care of two public orphanage houses, with the age range between 12 to 19 years. The method used in data retrieval is qualitative, that is through observation, interviews, and drawing test. The results showed that the behavior and …

High Prevalence Of Dissociative Amnesia And Related Disorders In Immigrated People, Angelica Staniloiu, Hans J. Markowitsch Jan 2014

High Prevalence Of Dissociative Amnesia And Related Disorders In Immigrated People, Angelica Staniloiu, Hans J. Markowitsch

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Across various cultures, dissociative amnesic disorders have been shown to be triggered by psychological stress or trauma. In immigrant populations, stressful experiences can arise during pre-emigration, migration or post-migration phase. Preliminary data suggest that stresses related to various phases of migration and acculturation could trigger dissociative amnesic disorders via a dysregulation of hormonal stress responses. These findings are highly relevant in the era of increased globalization and call for culturally sensitive approaches, in order to accurately diagnose and optimally manage these conditions in the future.
