Participatory Action And Drought As A Symbolic Context: The Case Of Aldama Chihuahua, Mexico, Sara Soledad Garcia Jan 2014

Participatory Action And Drought As A Symbolic Context: The Case Of Aldama Chihuahua, Mexico, Sara Soledad Garcia

Teacher Education

This paper presents a field-based project and a theoretical framework for work with an Action Research paradigm. The complexities of process are illustrated and synthesized in two theoretical models. The design of the study required constant change in the focus of projects as a result of the action produced from genuine involvement. As a result a working template of the execution of the action research projects involving multiple educational institutions was generated by bi-national collaborations. Participants were ecological researchers and schoolteachers, actively engaged in schools and in the education of the community at-large on the effects of drought in their …

An Invitation For Engagement: Assigning And Assessing Field Notes To Promote Deeper Levels Of Observation, John S. Farnsworth, Lyn Baldwin, Michelle Bezanson

Environmental Studies and Sciences

This paper explores current practices for teaching the discipline of keeping field notes within academic natural history courses. We investigate how journal projects can be structured to promote engagement with the natural world while emphasizing the importance of recording accurate and honest observations. Particular attention is paid herein to the assignment of field notes, and to the process of assessing the results of these assignments. Our discussion includes results from an informal survey of best practices among colleagues representing numerous natural history disciplines.

Poland: The Politics Of “God's Playground”, Jane Leftwich Curry Jan 2014

Poland: The Politics Of “God's Playground”, Jane Leftwich Curry

Political Science

Poland was the first and one of the most successful transitions from a centralized communist state to a liberal, more Western-style democracy. During the European economic crisis, Poland's economy maintained one of the highest growth rates in the European Union (EU). Its political system stabilized. It has been both an active member of the EU and a strong advocate for liberalization of its eastern neighbors as well as for their inclusion in European initiatives. Its prime minister, Donald Tusk, was the first East European elected head of the Council of Europe in 2014. His successor, Ewa Karpacz, signaled a shift …

An Indirect Method For Predicting Road Surface Temperature In Coastal Areas With Snowy Winters, Jason Covert, Robert Hellström Jan 2014

An Indirect Method For Predicting Road Surface Temperature In Coastal Areas With Snowy Winters, Jason Covert, Robert Hellström

Geography Faculty Publications

In places that experience snow and ice, road clearing and deicing operations are a necessity to ensure that road networks remain open and safe for travel. Such operations, however, are costly to both taxpayers and the environment making it all the more important that they are used in an efficient manner. Efficient use of road treatment resources takes experience on the part of the road network manager as well as access to reliable road surface temperature (RST) data which are used to determine when roads are conducive to snow and ice accumulation. On major roads and highways, road surface temperature …

Does Heterogeneity In Transfer Pricing Regulation Affect Foreign Direct Investment?, Quoc Hung Tran Jan 2014

Does Heterogeneity In Transfer Pricing Regulation Affect Foreign Direct Investment?, Quoc Hung Tran

Economics Faculty Publications

Does multinational firm take advantage of arbitrage opportunities when heterogeneity in transfer pricing regulations exist between home and host country? Using data on U.S. based multinational firms’ reinvestment earnings abroad as a proxy for FDI activity, provided by the BEA Survey of U.S. Direct Investment Abroad and the Balance of Payments Survey, we analyze the effect of transfer pricing regulation of multination firm FDI’s decision. The analysis results provide no empirical evidence that differences in transfer pricing regulation between home and host country affect FDI activity by U.S. based multinational firms. Host country’s specific characteristics such as market size, distant …

British Prime Minister Tony Blair’S Irish Potato Famine Apology, Jason A. Edwards, Amber Luckie Jan 2014

British Prime Minister Tony Blair’S Irish Potato Famine Apology, Jason A. Edwards, Amber Luckie

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

In June 1997, Prime Minister Tony Blair issued a statement expressing remorse for the British government’s inaction to assist the Irish during the potato famine of the late 1840s. Blair’s contrition was met with praise and criticism, but it proved to be part of the larger narrative in the peace negotiations within Northern Ireland. Although Blair’s apology is often cited as an exemplar of political leaders apologizing for historical injustices, little actual scholarly work on this subject has been conducted. To that end, this paper examines Blair’s potato famine apology through the theory of collective apology. We argue that collective …

The Good Citizen: Presidential Rhetoric, Immigrants, And Naturalization Ceremonies, Jason Edwards Jan 2014

The Good Citizen: Presidential Rhetoric, Immigrants, And Naturalization Ceremonies, Jason Edwards

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay examines how American presidents define the “good citizen,” particularly as it relates to naturalized immigrants. Because citizens who are naturalized have to go through an onerous process to become citizens they can offer lessons to natural-born Americans who take their citizenship for granted. I argue that presidents construct naturalized immigrants as the lifeblood of American progress and power. The accomplishments of individual citizen heroes provide something for all to emulate. At the same time, presidents define the good citizen in a one-dimensional way that undermines the potential of communal activities to bring issues and problems to light that …

Psychological Continuity: A Discussion Of Marc Slors' Account, Traumatic Experience, And The Significance Of Our Relations To Others, Pieranna Garavaso Jan 2014

Psychological Continuity: A Discussion Of Marc Slors' Account, Traumatic Experience, And The Significance Of Our Relations To Others, Pieranna Garavaso

Philosophy Publications

This paper addresses a question concerning psychological continuity, i.e., which features preserve the same psychological subject over time; this is not the same question as the one concerning the necessary and sufficient conditions for personal identity. Marc Slors (1998, 2001, 2001a) defends an account of psychological continuity that adds two features to Derek Parfit’s Relation R, namely narrativity and embodiment. Slors’ account is a significant improvement on Parfit’s, but still lacks an explicit acknowledgment of a third feature that I call relationality. Because they are usually regarded as cases of radical discontinuity, I start my discussion from the experiences of …

Development Of An Attribution Of Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities Scale, Robert E. Braun Phd., James H. Price, Jagdish Khubchandani, Erica Payton, Prasum Bhattacharjee

Health and Sport Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to develop an Attribution of Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities (AREHD) scale. A convenience sample of undergraduate college students (n = 423) at four Midwestern universities was recruited to respond to the survey. A pilot test with undergraduate students (n = 23) found the survey had good acceptability and readability level (SMOG = 11th grade). Using exploratory factor analysis we found the two a priori subscales were confirmed: individual responsibility and social determinants. Internal reliabilities of the subscales were: individual responsibility (alpha = 0.87) and social determinants (alpha = 0.90). Test–retest stability reliabilities were: individual responsibility …

City Of Fairborn Analysis Of Impediments To Fair Housing, Center For Urban And Public Affairs, Wright State University

Community Development

The City of Fairborn Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing (AI) is a review of barriers to fair housing in the public and private sector which restricts housing choices or the availability of housing choices based on a person’s membership in a protected class. Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act) prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings to the protected classes, which include:

  • Race
  • Familial status
  • Disability
  • Sex
  • Religion
  • National origin

The 1988 amendments to the Fair Housing Act also created an exemption to the provisions which allowed discrimination on the …

Lleap Dialogue Series (No.3) : Growing Ideas Through Evidence, Michelle Anderson, Emma Curtin Jan 2014

Lleap Dialogue Series (No.3) : Growing Ideas Through Evidence, Michelle Anderson, Emma Curtin

Leading Learning in Education and Philanthropy (LLEAP)

Evaluation of outcomes is the key area of focus for LLEAP. How do you monitor and evaluate the impact of what you are doing? Evaluating can be a challenge and the reasons for this vary. Sometimes it is seen as costing too much. In other cases, it is knowing what or how to evaluate that are the hurdles to overcome; while some think that evaluation is what academics do, that there is only one ‘right’ way to evaluate or that evaluation is for ‘acquittal’ purposes only. This year’s Guide has been designed to address some of these concerns. We do …

People In Nature: Relational Discourse For Outdoor Educators, Thomas Beery Jan 2014

People In Nature: Relational Discourse For Outdoor Educators, Thomas Beery

Research in Outdoor Education

Outdoor educators are concerned about a perceived human disconnection from nature. There is awareness of a lack of human affiliation, connection, or identity with nonhuman nature and its impact on attitudes and behaviors. This essay raises the possibility that despite our concern, we may contribute toward this disconnection via language that supports a separation of the natural and the cultural. Our ability to separate ourselves conceptually from the rest of nature may be partially to blame for environmental degradation, therefore challenging the nature-culture dichotomy is both useful and constructive. This essay will present examples of how outdoor educators can …

Group Social Climate And Individual Peer Interaction: Exploring Complex Relationships On Extended Wilderness Courses, Benjamin J. Mirkin Jan 2014

Group Social Climate And Individual Peer Interaction: Exploring Complex Relationships On Extended Wilderness Courses, Benjamin J. Mirkin

Research in Outdoor Education

This study explored how adolescents' perception of the social climate on wilderness expedition courses related to changes in how they approached peer interactions. Contrary to the hypothesis, on average, their orientation toward adaptive peer interaction decreased (n=251) from pre- to postcourse test. The individual level predictors of change in peer interactions were student's perception of group cohesion, task orientation, instructor control; and at the group level, instructor perception of the fun or playfulness of the course, as well as the course make-up (i.e., having participants who have been on previous similar experiences). This research contributes to knowledge of …

Exploring The Social Impacts Of A Summer Camp For Youth With Tourette Syndrome, Michael Griswold, C. Boyd Hegarty, Chris Harrist, Nate Trauntvein, David Griswold

Research in Outdoor Education

Although a wealth of research exists documenting the positive social outcomes promoted by summer camps, research specifically examining youths with Tourette Syndrome (TS) within the camp context is lacking. This study utilized a phenomenological approach to explore the social impacts of a weeklong camp specifically for youths with TS, involving focus groups with 18 campers aged 10–16, interviews with 10 staff members, and participant observations compiled by the researcher. Multiple themes and sub-themes concerning the social impacts of the camp experience were identified, including (a) relatedness (not alone and self-assurance); (b) social development (friendships, optimism, educational experience, and bullying); (c) …

The Development And Scaling Of The Teaching Outdoor Education Self-Efficacy Scale, Scott Schumann, Jim Sibthorp Jan 2014

The Development And Scaling Of The Teaching Outdoor Education Self-Efficacy Scale, Scott Schumann, Jim Sibthorp

Research in Outdoor Education

Outdoor educator teaching self-efficacy beliefs are important to the process of teaching in the outdoors. Errors in these self-beliefs, which are one's judgments of ability to successfully perform necessary teaching tasks, carry consequences for student learning and safety in outdoor contexts. This paper presents two studies conducted to develop a teaching outdoor education self-efficacy scale (TOE-SES). In Study 1, data were collected from 303 participants in collegiate outdoor programs. Exploratory Factor Analysis reduced a 49-item pool to a 23-item scale comprised of 5 subscales. In Study 2, data were collected from 200 National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) instructor and outdoor …

Energy Expenditure In The Backcountry, Mandy Pojha, Cara Ocobock, John Gookin Jan 2014

Energy Expenditure In The Backcountry, Mandy Pojha, Cara Ocobock, John Gookin

Research in Outdoor Education

The study of energy economics, known as energetics, has played a key role in shaping human ecology, evolution, and performance (Leonard & Ulijaszek, 2002). Research on energetics gives insight into how humans interact with their environment and how differences in body shape and size can impact that interaction. This understanding is particularly insightful for humans living in the backcountry for extended periods of time. Selecting food types and amounts to meet high-energy demands in the backcountry setting is a challenge, because energy demand models have primarily been based on lab studies that, in hindsight, appear to routinely underestimate energy demands …
