"What Does This Graph Mean?" Formative Assessment With Science Inquiry To Improve Data Analysis, Andrea Dawn Leech

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigated the use of formative assessment to improve three specific data analysis skills within the context of a high school chemistry class: graph interpretation, pattern recognition, and making conclusions based on data. Students need to be able to collect data, analyze that data, and produce accurate scientific explanations (NRC, 2011) if they want to be ready for college and careers after high school. This mixed methods study, performed in a high school chemistry classroom, investigated the impact of the formative assessment process on data analysis skills that require higher order thinking. We hypothesized that the use of evaluative …

Self-Efficacy In Low-Level English Language Learners, Laura F. Blumenthal Jan 2014

Self-Efficacy In Low-Level English Language Learners, Laura F. Blumenthal

Dissertations and Theses

Accounting for differences in second language proficiency attainment is an important area of inquiry in the study of Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Accounts of the language acquisition process have generally come from cognitive or psychological perspectives, which view language learning as primarily an internal mental/emotional process, or from sociocultural or critical perspectives that emphasize the influence of the learner's social environment. Research on variability in language learning has also failed to take into account the learning experiences of low-level learners.

This study adopted a social-psychological perspective on language acquisition that focused on the role of self-efficacy in learning, and applied …

Modeling The Impact Of Traffic Conditions On The Variability Of Mid-Block Roadside Pm2.5 On An Urban Arterial, Adam Moore Jan 2014

Modeling The Impact Of Traffic Conditions On The Variability Of Mid-Block Roadside Pm2.5 On An Urban Arterial, Adam Moore

PSU Transportation Seminars

Modeling Impact of Traffic Conditions on Variability of Midblock Roadside Fine Particulate Matter Concentrations on an Urban Arterial: This paper presents an innovative modeling of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations as a function of very high resolution meteorological and traffic data. Peak period measurements were taken at a mid-block roadside location on an urban arterial commuter roadway. To capture the impact of dynamic traffic conditions, data were analyzed at 10-second intervals, with substantially higher resolution than typical roadside air quality study designs. Particular attention was paid to changes in traffic conditions, including fleet mix, queuing and vehicle platooning over the …

Tending The Flowers, Cultivating Community: Gardening On New York City Public Housing Sites, Lauren Sepanski Fcrh '12 Jan 2014

Tending The Flowers, Cultivating Community: Gardening On New York City Public Housing Sites, Lauren Sepanski Fcrh '12

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

Founded in 1934, The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the nation’s oldest and largest public housing agency. Nearly half a million people live in NYCHA’s 334 housing developments located throughout the five boroughs. If a NYCHA resident wants to garden, he or she may submit a garden application to his or her development’s management office and begin to garden in a place approved by the development’s manager. Some developments have preordained places for their residents to garden, complete with fences. In other developments, residents simply choose a place on the development’s grounds, such as a part of a …

Snap And Food Consumption, Hilary W. Hoynes, Leslie Mcgranahan, Diane W. Schanzenbach Jan 2014

Snap And Food Consumption, Hilary W. Hoynes, Leslie Mcgranahan, Diane W. Schanzenbach

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

In this paper we describe the relationship between SNAP and food consumption. We first present the neoclassical framework for analyzing in-kind transfers, which unambiguously predicts that SNAP will increase food consumption, and then describe the SNAP benefit formula. We then present new evidence from the Consumer Expenditure Survey on food spending patterns among households overall, SNAP recipients, and other subgroups of interest. We find that a substantial fraction of SNAP-eligible households spend an amount that is above the program’s needs standard. We also show that the relationship between family size and food spending is steeper than the slope of the …

Effects Of Multicultural Training On Counseling: A Meta-Analysis, Todd Wilson Dunn, Dr. Tim Smith Jan 2014

Effects Of Multicultural Training On Counseling: A Meta-Analysis, Todd Wilson Dunn, Dr. Tim Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The past two decades have seen a proliferation in the amount of publications on multicultural counseling. For example, over 1000 published reports investigating multicultural counseling and the cultural contexts of psychology have appeared in psychological literature since 1995. Many of these studies have identified serious flaws in traditional methods of helping minority populations with emotional or psychological disturbances, while demonstrating that alternative “culturally sensitive” methods can improve treatment outcomes. Although the sudden proliferation of literature on multicultural counseling clearly indicates growing popular interest in the topic, responsible scientific practice dictates that any body of literature should be systematically evaluated and …

Does Outstanding Student Debt Reduce Asset Accumulation?, William Elliott, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Ilsung Nam Jan 2014

Does Outstanding Student Debt Reduce Asset Accumulation?, William Elliott, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Ilsung Nam

Center for Social Development Research

In this study, the authors use the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF) to assess whether student loan debt is associated with total assets. They find that median 2009 assets for households with no outstanding student loan debt ($207,000) are higher than they are for households with outstanding student loan debt ($174,000). Multivariate statistics indicate that a household with a four-year college graduate, outstanding student loan debt, and median assets ($451,520) in 2007 had $136,73 (36%) less home equity in 2009 than a household with a similar household with no outstanding student loan debt. The main policy implication of this study …

Peer Conversations About Inter-Racial And Inter-Ethnic Friendships, Lana Lee Buckholz Jan 2014

Peer Conversations About Inter-Racial And Inter-Ethnic Friendships, Lana Lee Buckholz

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to understand how early adolescents talk about cross-racial and cross-ethnic friendships. Gordon Allport's intergroup contact theory provided the framework for studying the elements needed for inter-racial and inter-ethnic friendship formation. Qualitative data were drawn from four separately recorded peer group conversations. Participants (n=18) were recruited from Parrish Middle School in Salem, Oregon. Patterns that emerged from the data were sorted, categorized and identified according to the tenets of intergroup contact theory or extensions of intergroup contact theory. Analysis also looked at the use of metaphors and storytelling among adolescents. Results showed that while intergroup …

Contentdm And Content Pro: A Comparison And Evaluation, Elizabeth Byrne Jan 2014

Contentdm And Content Pro: A Comparison And Evaluation, Elizabeth Byrne

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper examines two Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) to determine their suitability to provide access to digital photographic surrogates from a library’s archival photographic collection. The two DAMS examined are OCLC’s CONTENTdm (CDM) and Innovative Interfaces Inc.’s (III) Content Pro (CP). While both have been widely adopted, a literature review reveals that very little has been written about CP compared to CDM. Both use metadata schemes that are interoperable, reusable, and extensible and it is determined that both CDM and CP’s DAMS’ attributes recommend them. However, further work is needed to select one over the other. This includes consulting …

Quality-Space Theory In Olfaction, Benjamin D. Young, Andreas Keller, David Rosenthal Jan 2014

Quality-Space Theory In Olfaction, Benjamin D. Young, Andreas Keller, David Rosenthal

Publications and Research

Quality-space theory (QST) explains the nature of the mental qualities distinctive of perceptual states by appeal to their role in perceiving. QST is typically described in terms of the mental qualities that pertain to color. Here we apply QST to the olfactory modalities. Olfaction is in various respects more complex than vision, and so provides a useful test case for QST. To determine whether QST can deal with the challenges olfaction presents, we show how a quality space (QS) could be constructed relying on olfactory perceptible properties and the olfactory mental qualities then defined by appeal to that QS of …

Bihemispheric Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Enhances Effector-Independent Representations Of Motor Synergy And Sequence Learning., Sheena Waters-Metenier, Masud Husain, Tobias Wiestler, Jörn Diedrichsen

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Complex manual tasks-everything from buttoning up a shirt to playing the piano-fundamentally involve two components: (1) generating specific patterns of muscle activity (here, termed "synergies"); and (2) stringing these into purposeful sequences. Although transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the primary motor cortex (M1) has been found to increase the learning of motor sequences, it is unknown whether it can similarly facilitate motor synergy learning. Here, we determined the effects of tDCS on the learning of motor synergies using a novel hand configuration task that required the production of difficult muscular activation patterns. Bihemispheric tDCS was applied to M1 of …
