Mess Calls From Signal Hill, Newfoundland, Frances L. Stewart Feb 2014

Mess Calls From Signal Hill, Newfoundland, Frances L. Stewart

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Test excavations in the summer of 1984 for a resource inventory of Signal Hill National Historic Park, St. John's, Newfoundland, unearthed 1,954 faunal elements from structures built between 1790 and 1945. These were predominantly military buildings, although some were converted to civilian hospitals. Signalmen and their families have lived on the site also. The site, however, was mainly occupied by a British garrison from 1790 to 1870. The faunal remains from the various structures were analyzed as distinct units, and in this article, those from the buildings constructed and used by the British garrison are emphasized. The majority of the …

The British Gate Of Fort Beauséjour: An Archaeological Reconstruction, Bruce A. Morton Feb 2014

The British Gate Of Fort Beauséjour: An Archaeological Reconstruction, Bruce A. Morton

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Fifteen years after its initial excavation, the reanalysis of field notes, the final report, and the artifact collection, in addition to communication with the site's original excavator, has resulted in a detailed reconstruction of the main gate at Fort Beauséjour, New Brunswick, Canada. Interpretations generated by this recent reconsideration contribute significantly to what is at present only a scant body of data concerning North American fort gates of the mid-18th century.

The Structural Evolution Of Fort Frontenac, W. Bruce Stewart Feb 2014

The Structural Evolution Of Fort Frontenac, W. Bruce Stewart

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Fort Frontenac, located at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, in Kingston, Ontario, is among the earliest European sites in the Great Lakes Basin. The post was established in 1673 by Count Frontenac, then Governor of New France, as a means of intercepting furs destined for the Dutch and, later, the English merchants at Albany, New York. As the result of ongoing archaeological and historical research, a comprehensive structural history of the post has been developed. As the archaeological investigations have been restricted to the northwest bastion of the fort, that area will serve as the focus of the present …

French Occupation Of The Lakes Ontario And Erie Drainage Basins 1650-1760, Donald A. Brown Feb 2014

French Occupation Of The Lakes Ontario And Erie Drainage Basins 1650-1760, Donald A. Brown

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Maps dating to the 17th and 18th centuries and written accounts are used to identify a number of contemporary posts en route from Montreal to Detroit/Pontchartrain which otherwise receive little or no mention in the historical record. Archaeological evidence from the undocumented mid-18th-century Floating Bridge site, near Kingston, Ontario, is interpreted as a possible trader's post/Metis habitation occupied following the destruction of Fort Frontenac and prior to the post-1763 British occupation of the area. Evidence is presented for its use by civilians, who selected the site primarily for its environment rather than as a point of intersection on well-travelled trade …

Acadian Maine In Archaeological Perspective, Alaric Faulkner, Gretchen Faulkner Feb 2014

Acadian Maine In Archaeological Perspective, Alaric Faulkner, Gretchen Faulkner

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Recent excavations at Fort Pentagoet and Saint-Castin's Habitation have shown physical evidence of three separate 17th-century Acadian occupations near the mouth of the Penobscot River in mid-coastal Maine. From 1635 to 1654, Fort Pentagoet defended private commercial interests of Charles d'Aulnay against English enemies and French rivals. From 1670 until its destruction by the Dutch in 1674, the fort served as military headquarters for the administration of all Acadia under governors Grandfontaine and Chambly. During the last quarter of the century, French authority was reestablished with a nearby Indian village at the habitation of Jean Vincent de Saint-Castin. The archaeological …

On The Fence, Emily G. Hauck Feb 2014

On The Fence, Emily G. Hauck

SURGE

Over a hundred years ago, my great-great grandmother fled Germany by herself to come to the United States to escape the abuse of her father. She had no connections in this country and nowhere to go. That same century my ancestors from Ireland crossed the Atlantic to make a better life in America. They were discriminated against for their religion and for their nationality.

Ana* and her husband, two hardworking Mexicans, paid a coyote to help them cross the Rio Grande into the United States ten years ago. They saw no future for their two young girls in Mexico and …

Teacher Technology Narratives: Native Hawaiian Views On Education And Change, D. Lilinoe Yong, Ellen S. Hoffman Feb 2014

Teacher Technology Narratives: Native Hawaiian Views On Education And Change, D. Lilinoe Yong, Ellen S. Hoffman

The Qualitative Report

Narrative inquiry is a method by which "silenced voices" may be heard. In this study, eight Native Hawaiian teachers share their experiences of the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program (HLIP), or Papahana Kaiapuni, within the Hawai‘i public school system. The teachers describe change over time in HLIP with a focus on technology and their perceptions of how it has enhanced preservation of the Hawaiian language. By giving voice to their views on indigenous culture and teaching, the stories provide a rich and nuanced view of growth and school reform as framed by the teachers' own words. Themes of commitment to students …

Attention Deficit Associated With Early Life Interictal Spikes In A Rat Model Is Improved With Acth, Amanda E. Hernan, Abigail Alexander, Pierre-Pascal Lenck-Santini, Rod C. Scott Feb 2014

Attention Deficit Associated With Early Life Interictal Spikes In A Rat Model Is Improved With Acth, Amanda E. Hernan, Abigail Alexander, Pierre-Pascal Lenck-Santini, Rod C. Scott

Dartmouth Scholarship

Children with epilepsy often present with pervasive cognitive and behavioral comorbidities including working memory impairments, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder. These non-seizure characteristics are severely detrimental to overall quality of life. Some of these children, particularly those with epilepsies classified as Landau-Kleffner Syndrome or continuous spike and wave during sleep, have infrequent seizure activity but frequent focal epileptiform activity. This frequent epileptiform activity is thought to be detrimental to cognitive development; however, it is also possible that these IIS events initiate pathophysiological pathways in the developing brain that may be independently associated with cognitive deficits. These …

Networked Grounded Theory, Alexios V. Brailas Feb 2014

Networked Grounded Theory, Alexios V. Brailas

The Qualitative Report

The present paper demonstrates a research method combining Grounded Theory and Network Analysis for the inductive generation of a theory solely based on the empirical data being analyzed. This method was developed during my PhD research on the utilization of a virtual community (case study in Wikipedia) in formal Education institutions (tertiary or secondary education). The focus of this paper is on demonstrating the research method developed during this study. Networked Grounded Theory constitutes a remodeling of Grounded Theory and the rationale for the inclusion of Network Analysis techniques into the process of theory generation is explained. The software used …

Real Projects, Virtual Worlds: Coworkers, Their Avatars, And The Trust Conundrum, Michael F. Lohle, Steven R. Terrell

The Qualitative Report

This qualitative study informs project managers of the impact that the authentic projection of coworker identity via avatars has on trust and potential project management success when teams use virtual worlds to collaborate. By exploring the common experiences and reactions of potential virtual team participants to a demonstration that showed how to customize avatars and use them to communicate with others, it facilitated the development of a grounded theory that confirms whether the projection of authenticity via avatars is an antecedent of team trust and real project management success. Real management success was the main objective, since it is vital …

Writers Who Care: Advocacy Blogging As Teachers - Professors - Parents, Leah A. Zuidema, Sarah Hochstetler, Mark Letcher, Kristen Hawley Turner

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

Because we believe strongly that writers develop through authentic writing instruction - and because we see policies that drive practices away from these goals - we have decided to speak up and to speak out through advocacy blogging. Teachers, Profs, Parents: Writers Who Care (writerswhocare.wordpress.com) was born from our frustration with current mandates that limit teachers and students to reductive writing. We know what good writing instruction looks like, and we want to share that knowledge with an audience beyond academia. In doing so, we hope to redefine what it means to be an academic writer and to encourage others …
