Two additional models are presented to address issues of management and administration. The six models are integrated into a typology which integrates the conflict and consensus theories of society in relation to the six strategies. The Clinical Approach To Successful Program Development, Elizabeth J. Clark, Jan M. Fritz

Sociological Practice

To more adequately meet the needs for the decade ahead, it is essential that sociology departments evaluate their existing curricula and plan new programs or concentrations that will interest and attract students. Using the example of clinical sociology, this article focuses on general guidelines for developing a variety of program models in sociological practice. The guidelines are divided into the three parts of assessment, planning, and implementation, and an inventory of ideas and suggestions are given for each phase. Relevant issues of the importance of labels, leadership and independence, and rationales for program development are discussed.

Changing The Definition Of The Situation: Toward A Theory Of Sociological Intervention, Roger A. Straus Feb 2014

Changing The Definition Of The Situation: Toward A Theory Of Sociological Intervention, Roger A. Straus

Sociological Practice

The sociological intervention is identified as (1) directed at the operational definition of the situation and (2) taking into account the multiple, interacting layers of social participation framing human predicaments and their resolution. These are further differentiated, employing case examples, in terms of mode of attack—direct, indirect, or cooperative—and level of social context at which the intervention is directed—the personal, group, organizational, or social world being described here as "quantum" levels of interest. While others may conduct such interventions, the sociological intervention is characterized as the special domain of the clinical sociologist.
