Topography Of The Chimpanzee Corpus Callosum, Kimberley A. Phillips, William D. Hopkins Feb 2012

Topography Of The Chimpanzee Corpus Callosum, Kimberley A. Phillips, William D. Hopkins

Psychology Faculty Research

The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest commissural white matter tract in mammalian brains, connecting homotopic and heterotopic regions of the cerebral cortex. Knowledge of the distribution of callosal fibers projecting into specific cortical regions has important implications for understanding the evolution of lateralized structures and functions of the cerebral cortex. No comparisons of CC topography in humans and great apes have yet been conducted. We investigated the topography of the CC in 21 chimpanzees using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Tractography was conducted based on fiber assignment by continuous tracking (FACT) algorithm. We expected …

Preferences, Perceptions, And Veto Players: Explaining Devolution Negotiation Outcomes In The Canadian Territorial North, Christopher Alcantara Feb 2012

Preferences, Perceptions, And Veto Players: Explaining Devolution Negotiation Outcomes In The Canadian Territorial North, Christopher Alcantara

Political Science Faculty Publications

Since the early part of the 20th century, the federal government has engaged in a long and slow process of devolution in the Canadian Arctic. Although the range of powers devolved to the territorial governments has been substantial over the years, the federal government still maintains control over the single most important jurisdiction in the region, territorial lands and resources, which it controls in two of the three territories, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. This fact is significant for territorial governments because gaining jurisdiction over their lands and resources is seen as necessary for dramatically improving the lives of residents …

Acquisition And Use Of Locally Published Law Textbooks As Correlates Of Textbook Publishing In Nigeria, M. B. Edem, A. O. Okwilagwe Feb 2012

Acquisition And Use Of Locally Published Law Textbooks As Correlates Of Textbook Publishing In Nigeria, M. B. Edem, A. O. Okwilagwe

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Basic textbooks that attempt to discuss and analyse subjects with particular reference to Nigerian circumstances and relevant judicial opinions are adjudged to be very useful for law teaching and learning in Nigeria (Jegede, 1981). In recent times, serious concern is being expressed about the acute shortage of essential law textbooks in University libraries and the adverse effects that the problem may be having on legal education and the practice of the profession. With the present gross under-funding of most universities, most law faculties do not seem capable of meeting the approved minimum standards with respect to physical and library facilities. …

A Tilt In Favour Of The Older Generation, Less Fortunate, Tan K. B. Eugene

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan writes that although there are generally no significant handouts, offsets or goodies, Budget 2012 addresses some of the key genuine concerns of Singaporeans during the May 2011 General Election. It is also expected to generate a surplus of S$1.3 billion at a time when many advanced economies are in recession and with significant deficits.

John Muir In The Study Commons: A Case Study In The Aesthetic And Educational Impact Of Art In The Library, Shan Sutton, Robin Imhof

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

At the University of the Pacific Library, a work of art is being used to raise the visibility of one of its unique special collections. A photographic mural in the library’s study commons offers an artistic tribute to the naturalist John Muir, whose papers are housed in the library’s Holt-Atherton Special Collections department. The series of events that led to its installation provided unique opportunities to forge partnerships between the library and a variety of people and units within the campus community. As a result, the study commons features artwork that provides this learning space with aesthetic beauty as well …

Biculturalism: Its Implications For The Family System, Josie Augustin Feb 2012

Biculturalism: Its Implications For The Family System, Josie Augustin

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Many people of different ethnic groups migrate to the U.S. in hopes of finding opportunities to prosper for themselves and their families. However, with this migration comes many issues in the family system, particularly when dealing with a family that has first generation American adults and second generation American children. This mix of cultures gives rise to another population, one of bicultural or multicultural individuals. Biculturalism or multiculturalism implies that one has two or more cultural identities, respectively (Benet-Martínez & Haritatos, 2005). These identities can come to cause bicultural and multicultural families many issues, many relating to differing rates of …

The Epistemological Status Of Theoretical Simplicity, Yineth Sanchez Feb 2012

The Epistemological Status Of Theoretical Simplicity, Yineth Sanchez

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

In this paper, I argue that theoretical simplicity is not an epistemic virtue. Therefore, we need not prefer the simpler explanation of two competing scientific theories. First, I clarify the concept of theoretical simplicity as it figures into discussions in the philosophy of science. Next, I evaluate the strongest arguments in favor of this view as a criterion of theory selection. Then, I present two instances where theoretical simplicity is not preferable as such a criterion. Lastly, I show that while there may be a number of nonepistemic criteria of theory choice, including simplicity, none of them bears upon truth. …

Investigation Of The Role Of The Family In Anorexia Nervosa Treatment, Katie Dabrowski Feb 2012

Investigation Of The Role Of The Family In Anorexia Nervosa Treatment, Katie Dabrowski

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Anorexia nervosa burdens individuals with an unyielding obsession with weight loss and food restriction, ultimately leading to extreme emaciation and even death (Kaye, Fudge, & Paulus, 2009). This disorder most often plagues adolescent females, with estimates of prevalence in 0.2% to 1% of adolescent girls (Mirsa et al, 2011). Current literature suggests family relationships and dynamics, rather than blaming individual family members, are essential in understanding and ultimately treating the disorder for adolescent girls. This paper will review the literature on family relationships and dynamics conducive to disordered eating among daughters, as well as examine the findings regarding supportive family …

Borderplex Panel Evidence On Restaurant Price And Exchange Rate Dynamics, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., André Varella Mollick Feb 2012

Borderplex Panel Evidence On Restaurant Price And Exchange Rate Dynamics, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., André Varella Mollick

Border Region Modeling Project

This paper examines prices for 32 identical menu items sold by restaurant franchises operating on both sides of the border between El Paso in the U.S. and Ciudad Juárez in Mexico from July 1997 to June 2008. The relationship between real exchange rate (RER) volatility and the degree of price convergence is examined within a panel data context. The city-pair and goods selected provide a unique experiment in which distance, tradability, and industry considerations are set aside and the extent of RER volatility is the only factor to influence price convergence. We find non-monotonic relationships between mean reversion and RER …

Managing The Future Energy Policy For Ireland: Examining The Role Of Nuclear Power, Declan Lynch, Angela Wright Feb 2012

Managing The Future Energy Policy For Ireland: Examining The Role Of Nuclear Power, Declan Lynch, Angela Wright

Dept. of Organisation & Professional Development Publications

This study assesses the attitudes and opinions of Irish people towards the use of nuclear power, and specifically examines the concept that Ireland should use nuclear power to generate electricity in the future. Currently, Ireland has a prohibition on nuclear power, with little debate or discussion on same, and with scant amounts of information published on the subject as it relates to Ireland. Conversely, from an international perspective, there is a significant volume of literature available covering all aspects of nuclear power, generated from over 50 years of nuclear power operations. Nuclear power technology is perceived as being a relatively …

Home Forward’S Aging In Place Initiative: Planning For Current And Future Residents, Paula C. Carder, Jenny Weinstein, Jacklyn Nicole Kohon Feb 2012

Home Forward’S Aging In Place Initiative: Planning For Current And Future Residents, Paula C. Carder, Jenny Weinstein, Jacklyn Nicole Kohon

Institute on Aging Publications

This report was prepared on behalf of the Aging in Place Initiative of Home Forward. The Initiative sought to gather information about older persons currently residing in Home Forward’s public housing properties, from persons age 55 and older on the waitlist for housing, and from older adults in the Portland area. While local data were unavailable at the time of this report, we know that nationally, more than one-third (37 percent) of the approximately 5 million households receiving housing assistance from HUD are headed by persons age 62 and older. With this in mind, Home Forward must make decisions now …

The Influence Of Cognitive-Perceptual Variables On Patterns Of Change Over Time In Rural Midlife And Older Women's Healthy Eating, Bernice C. Yates, Carol H. Pullen, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Linda Boeckner, Patricia A. Hageman, Paul J. Dizona, Susan Noble Walker Feb 2012

Dizona, Susan Noble Walker

Psychology Faculty Publications

Although studies demonstrate that dietary interventions for healthy adults can result in beneficial dietary changes, few studies examine when and how people change in response to these interventions, particularly in rural populations. The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of change over time in healthy eating behaviors in midlife and older women in response to a one-year health-promoting intervention, and to examine what predictors (perceived benefits, barriers, self-efficacy, and family support for healthy eating) influence the changes during the intervention and follow-up. Data for this secondary analysis were from the Wellness for Women community-based trial. Women (N ¼ …
