Building Ties Without Aid, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2012

Building Ties Without Aid, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Pakistan–US relations suffered several major setbacks in 2011. A Parliamentary review currently underway will define the new terms of engagement. Along with this review, a reassessment of the economic relations between the two countries is also called for. The main instrument of economic ties is bilateral official aid for which the US administration persuaded the Congress to approve the Kerry-Lugar Bill amounting to $7.5 billion over a five years period.

Lack Of Protections For Home Care Workers: Overtime Pay And Minimum Wage, Kristin Smith Feb 2012

Lack Of Protections For Home Care Workers: Overtime Pay And Minimum Wage, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

This brief examines overtime hours and hourly wages among home care workers (home health aides and personal care aides) and compares them with hospital and nursing home aides. These aides engage in similar work for their clients, even though they work in different institutional settings. Yet, home health aides and personal care aides have higher poverty rates (20 percent and 28 percent, respectively) than hospital aides and nursing home aides (about 12 percent for both). In addition, they typically work fewer hours per week, have lower rates of health insurance coverage, rely on public assistance to a greater extent, and …

Blogging the Library

This is my fourth week on the job now as music librarian intern at Musselman Library, and I've learned a lot so far. I've been given quite a bit of reading (I had forgotten that librarians were into that), including the funny title So You Want to Be a Librarian but it's all been very informative and helpful. Projected Surface Raidiative Forcing Due To 2000-2050 Land-Cover Land-Use Albedo Change Over The Eastern United States, Christoper A. Barnes, David P. Roy, Thomas R. Loveland Feb 2012

Projected Surface Raidiative Forcing Due To 2000-2050 Land-Cover Land-Use Albedo Change Over The Eastern United States, Christoper A. Barnes, David P. Roy, Thomas R. Loveland

GSCE Faculty Publications

Satellite-derived contemporary land-cover land-use (LCLU) and albedo data and modeled future LCLU are used to study the impact of LCLU change from 2000 to 2050 on surface albedo and radiative forcing for 19 ecoregions in the eastern United States. The modeled 2000–2050 LCLU changes indicate a future decrease in both agriculture and forested land and an increase in developed land that induces ecoregion radiative forcings ranging from −0.175 to 0.432 W m−2 driven predominately by differences in the area and type of LCLU change. At the regional scale, these projected LCLU changes induce a net negative albedo decrease (−0.001) and …

Public Health Spending, Preventable Outcomes, And Medical Cost Offsets: Questions For Health Reform, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Uncertainty continues to surround the health and economic effects that can be expected from increased federal spending on public health and prevention strategies. Recent research provides some insight into the question of whether spending on public health strategies can offset the need for future spending on medical care.

The Role Of Positive Emotions In Health-Related Outcomes For Caregivers Of Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury, Suzzette Chopin Feb 2012

The Role Of Positive Emotions In Health-Related Outcomes For Caregivers Of Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury, Suzzette Chopin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between both self-efficacy for caregiving and personal gain and several variables related to well-being in caregivers (N = 70) of veterans who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Specifically, the relationship between self-efficacy for caregiving and perceived physical health and the relationship between personal gain related to caregiving and depression and anxiety was examined. The relationship between caregiver personal gain and perceived care recipient behavior was also examined. Exploratory analyses considered kinship and racial/ethnic differences. This was a secondary analysis of pilot data collected at four Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers (PRC) …

Looking To Do More. Evaluating The Process Of Researching And Proposing A Location Change To A Local Food Pantry, Allison Wilde

Capstone Collection

As development workers, we often are on the outside looking in. We may have counterparts that are open to the work that we are doing, the suggestions that we may have, but often they are resistant to change. This can be a result of many things including a fear of losing power or a threat to their role as an expert in their area of expertise. I believe both of these played a role in my RPP project. I worked with a group of people who were interested in improving services available at our local food pantry, Norwalk Area Food …

Does The Economy Determine The President? A Regression Model For Predicting Us Presidential Elections, Roy K. Roth Feb 2012

Does The Economy Determine The President? A Regression Model For Predicting Us Presidential Elections, Roy K. Roth

Undergraduate Economic Review

There is a prevalent belief that the economy determines the President. If the economy is good, the President keeps his job, if it is bad, he is out. A large body of econometric literature has been published on this topic. This paper takes a new approach. I look not at how the popular vote changes with economic conditions, but how the electoral vote changes. I further examine how these changes affect the probability that the incumbent party stays in office. I find that economic conditions may not be as important as they have been purported to be.

Meditation-State Functional Connectivity (Msfc): Strengthening Of The Dorsal Attention Network And Beyond, Brett Froeliger, Eric L. Garland, Rachel V. Kozink, Leslie A. Modlin, Nan-Kuei Chen, F. Joseph Mcclernon, Jeffrey M. Greeson, Paul Sobin Feb 2012

Meditation-State Functional Connectivity (Msfc): Strengthening Of The Dorsal Attention Network And Beyond, Brett Froeliger, Eric L. Garland, Rachel V. Kozink, Leslie A. Modlin, Nan-Kuei Chen, F. Joseph Mcclernon, Jeffrey M. Greeson, Paul Sobin

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Meditation practice alters intrinsic resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in the default mode network (DMN). However, little is known regarding the effects of meditation on other resting-state networks. The aim of current study was to investigate the effects of meditation experience and meditation-state functional connectivity (msFC) on multiple resting-state networks (RSNs). Meditation practitioners (MPs) performed two 5-minute scans, one during rest, one while meditating. A meditation naïve control group (CG) underwent one resting-state scan. Exploratory regression analyses of the relations between years of meditation practice and rsFC and msFC were conducted. During resting-state, MP as compared to CG exhibited greater rsFC …

Knowledge And Financial Management In Households: An Examination Of Married Women’S Perspectives In Chadbourn, North Carolina, Hmoud Fanash Al Surikhi

Capstone Collection

This paper attempts to explore women’s perceptions about married women’s involvement in household financial decision-making in Chadbourn, North Carolina. The purpose of this research paper is to acquire knowledge and insights about women’s role in their families, in particular the husband-wife relationship with respect to financial decisions within households. Since the research’s purpose is to examine the relationship between women’s knowledge represented by level of education, and what role knowledge plays in the financial decision process in households, I have chosen interviewees with different levels of education.

During the interviews, women spoke honestly about their situations and what challenges they …

Agricultural Productivity And Economic Development, Ishrat Husain Dr. Feb 2012

Agricultural Productivity And Economic Development, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The literature on Economic Development has provided us some lessons about its links with agricultural productivity and clearly demonstrates that the process of transformation takes place when labor and jobs move out of agriculture sector while the productivity of land and labor keeps on rising. As population expands, demand for food and fibres increases and the domestic production has to keep pace with this growing demand. As the labour shifts from low productivity activities in agriculture sector to high productivity activities within agriculture such as livestock, diary, horticulture, fisheries and towards industry, the country’s allocation and utilization of resources improves …
