The Anchor: 2012

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

What Does Burke Have To Do With America?, Ted Mcallister Feb 2012

What Does Burke Have To Do With America?, Ted Mcallister

School of Public Policy Working Papers

Paul Gottfried argues (Conservatism in America: Making Sense of the American Right, 2009) that despite claims to a British patrimony going through Edmund Burke, the American Right has no meaningful connection to European Conservatism. Moreover, the attempt to connect American Conservatism with Edmund Burke hides the leftward turn in the American Conservative Movement over the last several decades. But Gottfried’s argument rests on assumptions about the aristocratic foundation of conservatism and neglects the very real Burkean institutional framework in much of American history. While Gottfried is correct to argue that the contemporary American Right is more leftist than …

Rural Demographic Change In The New Century: Slower Growth, Increased Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson Feb 2012

Rural Demographic Change In The New Century: Slower Growth, Increased Diversity, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

This brief examines rural demographic trends in the first decade of the twenty-first century using newly available data from the 2010 Census. The rural population grew by just 2.2 million between 2000 and 2010—a gain barely half as great as that during the 1990s. Population growth was particularly slow in farming and mining counties and sharply reduced in rural manufacturing counties. Rural population gains were largest in high-amenity counties and just beyond the metropolitan fringe. Diversity accelerated in rural America, with racial and ethnic minorities accounting for 83 percent of rural population growth between 2000 and 2010.

A Preventable Epidemic: Kotter’S Eight Step Change Model Applied To Type 2 Diabetes In Youth, Jo Marie Courtney

Florida Public Health Review

Type 2 diabetes affecting children is a global epidemic that can be addressed by applying leadership models traditionally applied to corporate business structures. Leadership models provide the guidelines to apply to a problem and create a vision of change. Approximately 346 million individuals currently suffer from diabetes worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ofthose individuals with diabetes, 90% have type 2. Once a disease characterized by middle-aged, overweight adults, type 2 diabetes is now being diagnosed in children and adolescents. The severity oftype 2 diabetes is greater than the diagnosis portrays due to the many co-morbidities and risk …

Vague And Outdated Fcc Indecency Policy Must Be Altered, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz

Communication Faculty Publications

The FCC v. Fox Television Stations, Inc. case is the most recent iteration of an ongoing struggle to apply the US Supreme Court's flawed majority reasoning in FCC v. Pacifica — a 1978 decision that set in motion a scheme to try to protect children from broadcast profanity and nudity. While the channeling of such content to overnight hours seemingly protected some adult's First Amendment rights,I have argued for more than 20 years that the vague and subjective definitions promulgated by the FCC are problematic.

Online Gaming Issues In Offline Couple Relationships: A Primer For Marriage And Family Therapists (Mfts), Katherine M. Hertlein, Blendine P. Hawkins

The Qualitative Report

Although the challenges around participation in online gaming grow, gamers and their partners who experience online relationship issues related to gaming, present a new set of treatment challenges for therapists. In this article, we report on the findings of a hermeneutic research study aimed at evaluating the scholarly literature related to online gaming and interpret these texts to determine the effect such online activity has on the couple relationship. We reviewed 18 articles published between 1998 and 2010 related to online gaming and interpersonal relationships, focusing solely on empirical articles related to the search criteria. Clarifying My World: Identity Work In The Context Of Workplace Bullying, Premilla D'Cruz, Ernesto Noronha
