The Increasing Use Of Unallocated Retained Earnings By Farmer Cooperatives, Jeffrey S. Royer
The Increasing Use Of Unallocated Retained Earnings By Farmer Cooperatives, Jeffrey S. Royer
Cornhusker Economics
In the past, the primary source of equity capital in U.S. farmer cooperatives has been retained patronage refunds. Typically, a cooperative would allocate its net earnings to individual members on the basis of patronage and retain a share of those allocations to provide equity until eventually redeeming it in cash. Over time, however, unallocated retained earnings have become an increasingly important source of equity. In fact, in 2008, cooperatives kept a greater proportion of their net earnings as unallocated retained earnings than as retained patronage refunds, according to the most recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) financial profile of farmer …

Foster Youth And Post-Secondary Education: A Study Of The Barriers And Supports That Led To Academic Achievement, Brenda Morton
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the perceptions of former and current foster youth on the barriers, supports, helps and strategies they encountered during their K-12 education, and to learn how these contributed to their ability to enroll in post-secondary education. The study included in-depth interviews of 11 participants, all of whom were current or former foster youth who were enrolled or had plans to enroll in a community college or four-year university. These in-depth interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. The data was first coded by topics and then grouped into themes. The results of …
Queer Love In Woolf's Orlando And Chu's Notes Of A Desolate Man, Pei-Wen Clio Kao
Queer Love In Woolf's Orlando And Chu's Notes Of A Desolate Man, Pei-Wen Clio Kao
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Queer Love in Woolf's Orlando and Chu's Notes of a Desolate Man" Pei-Wen Clio Kao analyses Virginia Woolf and T'ien-Wen Chu's novels in the context of gender studies. Kao's reading of Orlando and Notes of a Desolate Man is an elaboration on homosexual sensibilities of both men and women based on the concept of écriture féminine in the context of patriarchy and the former's power of subversion and change. Kao's analysis results in the finding that while Woolf's Orlando is more attuned to the feminist discourse based on an extended Western project in its period and …
For-Profit College Entry And Cost Efficiency: Stochastic Frontier Estimates Vs Two-Year Public And Non-Profit Colleges, G. Thomas Sav
For-Profit College Entry And Cost Efficiency: Stochastic Frontier Estimates Vs Two-Year Public And Non-Profit Colleges, G. Thomas Sav
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper provides stochastic frontier cost and (in)efficiency estimates for private for-profit colleges with comparisons to public and private non-private colleges. The focus is on the two-year U.S. higher education sector where there exists the largest and fastest growing entry of for-profit colleges. Unbalanced panel data is employed for four academic years, 2005-2009. Translog cost frontiers are estimated with an inefficiency component that depends upon environmental factors defined by college specific characteristics. More experienced public and private non-profit colleges are found to be more cost efficient relative to the newer entrants. In addition, the newer for-profits exhibit greater efficiency variability …
Foresight Security Scenarios: Mapping Research To A Comprehensive Approach To Exogenous Eu Roles (Focus), Alexander Siedschlag, Andrea Jerković
Foresight Security Scenarios: Mapping Research To A Comprehensive Approach To Exogenous Eu Roles (Focus), Alexander Siedschlag, Andrea Jerković
Publications
FOCUS helps shape European security research to enable the EU to effectively respond to tomorrow's challenges stemming from the globalisation of risks, threats and vulnerabilities. FOCUS concentrates on alternative future EU roles to prevent or respond to incidents situated on the ‘borderline’ between the internal and external dimensions of the security affecting the Union and its citizens. It does so by elaborating multiple scenarios, based on IT-supported foresight, in the form of alternative futures. These are plausibility-probed versus mere threat scenarios.
Moving Beyond Dichotomies: How The Intersection Of Race, Class And Place Impacts High School Graduation Rates For African American Students, Heather L. Storer, Joseph A. Mienko, Yu-Ling Chang, Ji Young Kang, Christina Miyawaki, Katie Schultz
Moving Beyond Dichotomies: How The Intersection Of Race, Class And Place Impacts High School Graduation Rates For African American Students, Heather L. Storer, Joseph A. Mienko, Yu-Ling Chang, Ji Young Kang, Christina Miyawaki, Katie Schultz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Over thirty years ago, William Julius Wilson declared that class trumped race as the more significant determinant of social mobility and economic opportunity. Despite the acclaim and scrutiny for Wilson's work, the United States has grown increasingly divided by intersecting factors of race, class and other demographic factors such as place (Massey, 2007). These divisions are especially evident in the public education system. We analyze how race, class and place interact to predict high school graduation rates in a national sample of schools and students. Results confirm that a singular focus on race, class, or locale is insufficient to explain …

Oil Price Pass-Through Into Inflation: Empirical Evidence From Nigeria, Adeniyi O. Adenuga, Margaret J. Hilili, Osaretin O. Evbuomwan
Economic and Financial Review
The objective of the paper is to empirically investigate the oil price pass-through into inflation in Nigeria in order to suggest appropriate domestic policies necessary to control inflation for the policy makers. The study also attempts to answer questions like: What is the causal links between oil price and inflation in Nigeria? Is oil price highly correlated with inflation? What does the result of an estimation of a Phillips curve tell us about the pass-through for oil in Nigeria. The methodology adopted by the paper is a standard pass-through equation in the form of an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model …

Estimation Of Interest Elasticity Model For Aggregate Commercial Bank Deposits In Nigeria (1986-2008), Matthew .I. Eborieme, Edwin. M. Egboro
Economic and Financial Review
The Nigerian government deregulated the financial market in 1987 in line with the McKinnon-Shaw financial liberalization paradigm. However, the subsequent policy reversal after the introduction of the structural adjustment programme has made the effect of interest rate on aggregate commercial bank deposits (CBD) mobilized unclear. This study is based on the pioneering work of Egboro (2004) who initially examined the appropriateness of these policy summersaults with data ending in 1999. However, in this present study we re-estimated an interest elasticity model of commercial bank deposits in Nigeria by employing more recent data that captured subsequent changes in the nation’s financial …
Is Monetary Policy Responsive To External Reserves?: Empirical Evidences From Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba
Is Monetary Policy Responsive To External Reserves?: Empirical Evidences From Nigeria, Baba N. Yaaba
Economic and Financial Review
The global economy has witnessed extraordinary boost in the accumulation of external reserves, following the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s. External reserves increased sharply from US$1.2 trillion in 1995 to over US$10.0 trillion in January 2012. Developing countries increased their share from 30.0 per cent in 1990 to 67.0 per cent in 2011. Nigeria is not left out in this trend, as external reserves grew from US$5.5 billion in 1999 to US$34.68 billion in March 2012, representing over 530 per cent increase within the period. This placed Nigeria as the 44th largest reserves holder in the world. Reflecting on …

Ratings Game : A Review, Phebian N. Omanukwe
Economic and Financial Review
Post-2008 global financial crisis placed the search light on the activities of global rating agencies, especially in the United States and Europe. The article discussed the regulatory role played by private credit rating agencies and their impact on the financial system. The author attempts to draw attention to the conflict of interests between the objectives of private credit agencies and the regulatory role they play. A synopsis of the article is presented in section II below, while comments and lessons for Nigeria are discussed in section III.
Major League Baseball Marketing Ads And Ticket Sales, Nicole Cohen
Major League Baseball Marketing Ads And Ticket Sales, Nicole Cohen
Graphic Communication
Major League Baseball teams spend thousands of dollars each year on the promotion of their team to sell tickets to games. Much of this money is spent on print advertisements. Marketing teams of MLB teams would benefit by knowing if there is any direct relationship between a print advertisement and ticket sales. This report explores if there is any type of direct correlation between the two. Elite and specialized interviewing, descriptive and historical research, as well as surveying were all used to help determine what, if any, sort of relationship print advertisements and ticket sales have.

Macroeconomic Shocks And Fiscal Deficit Behaviour In Nigeria: A Vecm Approach., M. O. Abeng, K. S. Alehile
Economic and Financial Review
This paper focuses on establishing the links between fiscal deficit and short-term changes in major macroeconomic variables like real output, interest rate, exchange rate, inflation rate and crude oil price in Nigeria. Empirical results show that the model adequately explains the behaviour of government of fiscal deficit and that while the accumulation of deficit is not at all detrimental to the economy per se, prudence should be exercised in the financing options adopted and more so the appropriate application of such funds to selffinancing projects. It is recommended that government broaden its tax-net to curb the surging borrowing as well …

Are processes of figurative comparison and figurative categorization different? An experiment combining alternative-sense and matched-sense metaphor priming with a divided visual field assessment technique sought to isolate processes of comparison and categorization in the 2 cerebral hemispheres. For target metaphors presented in the right visual field/left cerebral hemisphere (RVF/LH), only matched-sense primes were facilitative. Literal primes and alternative-sense primes had no effect on comprehension time compared to the unprimed baseline. The effects of matched-sense primes were additive with the rated conventionality of the targets. For target metaphors presented to the left visual field/right cerebral hemisphere (LVF/RH), matched-sense primes were again …

In the most recent decade, there has been a shortage of effectively managed corporate crises. This study is meant to discover the reasons behind the ineffective crisis management responses through the inspection of past corporate case studies in crisis management, as well as what can be done to help corporations use crisis management more effectively. The best practices in effective corporate crisis management in the three different stages of a crisis were attained through the utilization of case studies and expert opinions. The recommendations for practice include making pre-planning and evaluation regarded as more important in crisis management plans, choosing …
Massive Kinked Bonuses, Kevin F. Hallock
Massive Kinked Bonuses, Kevin F. Hallock
Economics Faculty Publications
While most people are paid by the hour or with a yearly salary, some are also paid bonuses. And, some are paid very large, all-or-nothing bonuses. The author's favorite recent example is from last summer when golfer Darren Clarke earned a $3-million bonus from his sponsor. But it was how the payout was structured more than the amount that so intrigued him -- his sponsor's payout was all or nothing. How people are paid is fascinating. It is particularly interesting in this case of very, very large bonuses. The sports odds that Darren Clarke would win the tournament going into …

This report describes the preliminary work to develop the Oregon Traffic Safety Data Archive (OrTSDA). The mission of OrTSDA is to "build the knowledge base of traffic safety data in Oregon". The archive hopes to become a valuable traffic safety data resource with researchers, practitioners, and community supporters. As envisioned, the archive will provide current and historical versions of related data, encompass complete documentation, and contain an online interface to the variety of traffic safety related data. Working with partner state agencies, the archive contains reported motor vehicle crashes statewide, population data, estimates of vehicle miles traveled, traffic crime, and …
A Narrative Conceptualization Of The Imposter Phenomenon: Implications For Supervisors Of Beginning Counselors, Joel A. Lane
A Narrative Conceptualization Of The Imposter Phenomenon: Implications For Supervisors Of Beginning Counselors, Joel A. Lane
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Imposter Phenomenon, characterized as a sentiment that one is incompetent despite overwhelming contradictory evidence, is perhaps the most significant challenge that counseling students face as they begin their practicum experiences. Individuals experiencing this phenomenon are unable to internalize evidence of their competence. They believe that their successes can be attributed to luck, and feel that fraudulence is the primary reason for their having progressed to the point of the practicum experience. An inability to see one’s counseling abilities as competent can negatively impact his or her work in multiple ways. Supervisors of these counseling students are in a unique …

Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Community Needs Assessment, Robert Parker, Juli Brode, John Rowell
TREC Final Reports
Dependence on fossil fuels, climate change, and degraded air quality are forcing the auto industry and consumers to seek alternative solutions to the current transportation system. Significant technical breakthroughs are allowing automakers to develop electric vehicles (EVs) that transcend some of the key barriers that limited them historically. Plug in electric vehicles entered the Oregon marketplace in early 2011. A range of reports suggest the demand for EVs will grow rapidly once affordable highway speed vehicles become available. ODOT identified the lack of a reliable network of electric vehicle service equipment (e.g., charging stations) that increases the range of these …

The Oregon Highway Plan’s (OHP) mobility policies guide various planning and programming activities of the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Among these activities are ODOT’s land use change review responsibilities under the Transportation Planning Rule, as adopted by the state’s Land Conservation and Development Commission. This report examines supplemental transportation performance metrics beyond the volume-to-capacity metric that currently supports OHP mobility policies. Selected supplemental metrics are empirically analyzed using a travel demand model calibrated for a Medford, Oregon study area.

Over much of the world, contemporary communicative practices are mediated by a wide range of digital technologies that support speech, image, video, and of course textual literacies. In dialectic tension with the rapid growth in digital information and communication media, Internet information and communication technologies have amplified conventional communicative practices in terms of breadth, impact and speed and have also enabled the emergence of new communicative, cultural and cognitive practices. These practices form dynamic cultures-of-use - that is, communication tools and the human activities they mediate co-evolve (Thorne, 2003). This article begins with a review of contradictory appraisals of digital …
