Societal Sources Of Negative Attitudes Against The Roma: The Case Of Romania, Eliza Markley, Darina Lepadatu
Societal Sources Of Negative Attitudes Against The Roma: The Case Of Romania, Eliza Markley, Darina Lepadatu
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
Romania is the home of one of the largest Roma minorities in the world. This paper examined sources of negative attitudes toward the Roma in Romania by testing two explanations, that of societal integration and contact on a nationally representative sample. Our findings suggest that the negative attitudes against the Roma are largely driven by the type of relationships and contact that Romanians develop with the Roma. Having Roma in the family or as friends or colleagues at work decreases Romanians ' negative attitudes against the Roma. On the contrary, as the contact theory states, being in limited contact with …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Transitional Effect Of Democratic Regime Change On Human Rights Development, Alana Mcelhinney
A Comparative Analysis Of The Transitional Effect Of Democratic Regime Change On Human Rights Development, Alana Mcelhinney
Political Science Theses and Capstones
It has been a long-standing topic of discussion within the field of political science on the extent to which the establishment of democratic regime characteristics influences the development of human rights. While there is considerable research in the areas of democracy and human rights, what the literature lacks is research towards the growth of democratic regime characteristics being causal to the development of human rights practices. This analysis shows that a transition in democratic regime characteristics is directly linked to the development of human rights. After completing case-study analysis and developing causal theory I take data from the years 1981 …

Pr Social And Digital Professional Challenges: A Relationship Between Organizations And Their Publics, Samuel Borden, Erika Wagner, Lauren Rubio, Elizabeth Freeman, Matt Butcher, Tom Haeussler
Pr Social And Digital Professional Challenges: A Relationship Between Organizations And Their Publics, Samuel Borden, Erika Wagner, Lauren Rubio, Elizabeth Freeman, Matt Butcher, Tom Haeussler
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Public Relations is extensively integrated into social and digital communication platforms. PR is focused on dialogic communication grounded in the philosophy of caring (Coombs, 2007). The most effective approach to understanding the PR role through social media is to examine how these platforms are used in developing relationships between an organization and its publics. Experienced professionals suggest it is the relationship between an organization's goals and the needs of its publics that allows the most effective communication process. Therefore, students conducted in-depth interviews of members of a student organization to establish the goals of the organization. Then the publics were …

Don’T Weight!: A Public Relations Campaign To Raise Awareness About Childhood Obesity, Ellyn Lange, Murphy Maes, Molly Heztner
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This research was the basis for a national campaign competition to raise awareness about childhood obesity, called the Bateman competition. As members of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and Valpo's student-run agency SPARK, this campaign was affiliated with PRSSA and sponsored by General Mills and United Way. Research on childhood obesity was initiated in October, 2011 and the campaign was implemented throughout the month of February. The research established one particular disturbing fact – more than 70% of those who are obese during childhood will remain the same in their adulthood (http://childhoodobesitystatistics.net/facts.php). Therefore, by naming …
Complexity Theory: An Approach To Understanding The Weak Relationships Between Valparaiso’S International And Non-International Student Populations, Cameron Witt, Kayla Moon, Michelle Brewer
Complexity Theory: An Approach To Understanding The Weak Relationships Between Valparaiso’S International And Non-International Student Populations, Cameron Witt, Kayla Moon, Michelle Brewer
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The Valparaiso University campus is becoming more diverse as each year passes. The undergraduate population on campus is experiencing a rise in international admissions. Although the University has many recognized student organizational groups, including VISA (Valparaiso International Student Association), these student organizations are failing to connect with one another, which results in a very fragmented student population rather than an intertwined group of young adults. The prior being the case, this campaign directly targets the international student association known as VISA, and is related to increasing student awareness (both international and national) of the VISA organization, their events, and also …

In the United States, exotic dancers are denied their right to work in a safe and secure work environment. Strippers are faced with a variety of abuses on a daily basis and struggle to deal with the negative perceptions and social stigma in their communities. Perceptions of this legalized form of sexual entertainment are connected to the perceptions of prostitutes but differ because of the inability of the strippers to have physical contact with the audience. Dancers are stereotyped to perform the same services as a prostitute and do not have a dignified job. Women enter this area of the …

Examination Of Social Responding In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Paul Allison, Carlton Lyons, Charla Trubey
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Impairments in reciprocal pretend play are well documented in children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The play of children with this disorder is characterized by deficits in spontaneous language, imitation, and social interaction. The effectiveness of many different behavioral teaching techniques has been examined in order to teach play skills to children with autism. The foundation for our research stems from the study conducted by MacDonald, Sacramone, Mansfield, Wiltz, and Ahearn (2009). The basis for their approach was founded upon the fact that children with autism have deficits in those behaviors listed above. Research supports the viability …
The Effect Of Different Training Regimens On Improved Sound Frequency Discrimination In Wistar Rats, Sam Cain, Elizabeth Grigoletti, Erin Walsh
The Effect Of Different Training Regimens On Improved Sound Frequency Discrimination In Wistar Rats, Sam Cain, Elizabeth Grigoletti, Erin Walsh
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Rat subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups. The rats were presented with differing patterns of target and non-target frequencies, with the target remaining constant between groups while the non-target varied between groups. The rats were rewarded with food for successful bar presses while the target tone was playing, and no reinforcement was delivered for presses that occurred during the non-target tone. The groups were labeled as Control, Rapid, and Gradual. The control group experienced a silence in the place of non-target tone, while the rapid and gradual groups received the same tone in the beginning, but the …

Transformation Of Public Relations Agencies Through Evaluation Of Golin Harris’ Evolution To The G4 Model Using Public Relations Theories, Samuel Borden, Elizabeth Freeman, Nathalie Martinez, Lauren Rubio, Ryan Brule, Demetrius Amparan, Kimberly Coticchia, Liz Powers
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
The study developed a critical analysis of public relations agency Golin Harris and their new G4 Model. This analysis was conducted by an upper-level undergraduate class PR Leadership: From an Agency Perspective. The eight-member, advanced class, team-researched, compared, and contrasted the new model with their previous approach to agency functions. Using key public relations theories, this PR evolution was examined to assess just what this change means to consumers, clients, and other public relations agencies. The theories used were Speech Act Theory, Social Constructionism, Weikian, Strategic Issues Management, and Diffusion of Innovation Theory. An evaluation of the documents provided …
Romance And Religion In College: The Predictors Of Quality In College Romantic Relationships, Emma J. Jaffe
Romance And Religion In College: The Predictors Of Quality In College Romantic Relationships, Emma J. Jaffe
Scripps Senior Theses
The primary goal of the current study was to investigate the influence of religion, conflict, sex, and duration on the quality of romantic relationships in college. The transition period of college lends itself to new opportunities and experiences in which young adults learn to express themselves within different types of romantic relationships. One aspect of college that influences these relationships is the emerging “hookup” culture, leading to relationships being less of a norm in college settings. Another influence of college is the diversity of students within the college setting, yielding higher rates of intercultural (or in the case of this …
Effects Of Social Influence In Transformational Christian Worship Experiences, Maggie J. Tietz
Effects Of Social Influence In Transformational Christian Worship Experiences, Maggie J. Tietz
Scripps Senior Theses
There exists a severe deficit of studies exploring the psychological aspects of Christian worship experiences despite worship’s importance in Christianity and in many people’s lives. Transformational worship experiences can have lasting effects on one’s outlook and psychological functioning (Chou, 2008; Cutler, 1976; Ellison & George, 1994; Fife, Adegoke, McCoy, & Brewer, 2011; Salsman, Brown, Brechting, & Carlson, 2005), yet very few studies have investigated these experiences. The current study sought to explore the effects of group size and style of worship on participants’ feelings of deindividuation and focus on others within the congregation. Seventy-six middle aged adults from a range …
Fitness Tax Credits: Costs, Benefits, And Viability, Daniel M. Reach
Fitness Tax Credits: Costs, Benefits, And Viability, Daniel M. Reach
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
As the number of overweight and obese Americans rises, it becomes increasingly clear that Americans need further incentives to stimulate lasting lifestyle changes. Tax incentives focused on exercise, which have been largely unexplored to this point, are an effective response to the growing obesity problem in the United States that would largely avoid the political opposition that tax policies focused on diet have encountered. In addition, they would also provide a more palatable solution for the taxpayer beneficiaries with a relatively low impact on government revenues. Viable tax incentives to encourage greater fitness include tax credits and sales tax breaks, …

High Expectations And Some Wounded Hopes: The Policy And Politics Of A Uniform Statute On Videotaping Custodial Interrogations, Andrew E. Taslitz
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Much has been written about the need to videotape the entire process of police interrogation of suspects. Videotaping discourages abusive interrogation techniques, improves police training in proper techniques, reduces frivolous suppression motions, and improves jury decision making about the voluntariness and accuracy of a confession. Despite these benefits, only a small number of states have adopted legislation mandating electronic recording of the entire interrogation process. In the hope of accelerating legislative adoption of this procedure and of improving the quality of such legislation, the Uniform Law Commission (ULC) ratified a uniform recording statute for consideration by the states. I was …
Foreclosing Foreclosure: Escaping The Yawning Abyss Of The Deep Mortgage And Housing Crisis, Aleatra P. Williams
Foreclosing Foreclosure: Escaping The Yawning Abyss Of The Deep Mortgage And Housing Crisis, Aleatra P. Williams
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
In 2007, Rick Sharga, vice president of marketing at RealtyTrac, stated that with more stringent lending and underwriting standards, “we will likely see a significant foreclosure decrease” within the next three years. However, a sustained and considerable decrease in foreclosures has yet to occur. In fact, the real estate market downfall and resulting mortgage and housing crisis have proven to be wider, deeper, and more serious than first anticipated. Since 2007, millions of homeowners faced, and continue to face, foreclosure proceedings. To provide protections for homeowners, federal and state actors have attempted regulatory and legislative solutions to stem the foreclosure …

An Inconvenient Lie: Big Tobacco Was Put On Trial For Denying The Effects Of Smoking; Is Climate Change Denial Off-Limits?, Elizabeth Dubats
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Plaintiffs have made several notable attempts to bring nuisance, trespass, and negligence suits against major sources of greenhouse gas emissions for climate change related injuries. While climate change is a widely recognized environmental issue, courts have refused to recognize it as a basis for a valid cause of action in tort, finding either petitioners lack standing to bring the claim, or that the claim raises political questions that should not be addressed by the judiciary. Some more recent climate change tort claims have also included allegations of fraud on the part of the hydrocarbon industry for actively perpetuating misinformation about …

Ptsd In Military Veterans: History, Evolution, And Policy Implications, Christine Albain
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
It is estimated that 30% of men and women who have served in war zones will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, it is still a topic that is not fully understood or supported by American civilian culture. PTSD has, historically, been called many things, including malingering, shell shock, and battle fatigue and has greatly evolved as a psychiatric diagnosis. This poster will present the culmination of a comprehensive literature review, policy analysis, and a series of case studies related to PTSD among military veterans. The history and evolution of PTSD within military populations will be examined, with special care …

The Spirituality Of Addictions: A Christian Patristic Model And Procedure For Assessment, Alyssa Abbate, Ryan Abraham, Kelly Perfect, Diana Stribl
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Addiction theory has focused on the debilitating effects that drug addicts and alcoholics face. However, addiction can permeate much further into our lives than just through drugs and alcohol. Evagrius of Ponticus presented eight tempting thoughts that comprised all the beliefs, behaviors, items, and emotions that an individual can be disorderly attached to. These disordered attachments can have enslaving effects on an individual that constrains the person’s will and desire for freedom from these preoccupations. We also include a measure that assesses spiritual involvement and locus of control. The purpose of this study is to compile a psychological measurement that …
Are Telecommuting And Personal Travel Complements Or Substitutes?, Pengyu Zhu
Are Telecommuting And Personal Travel Complements Or Substitutes?, Pengyu Zhu
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
Whether telecommuting and personal travel are complements or substitutes is a key question in urban policy analysis. Urban planners and policy makers have been proposing telecommuting as part of travel demand management (TDM) programs to reduce congestion. Based on small samples, several empirical studies have found that telecommuting has a substitution effect (although small) on commute travel, and have thus argued that policies promoting telecommuting might be promising in reducing travel. Using data from the 2001 and 2009 National Household Travel Surveys (NHTS), this study involves two large national samples to try to more accurately identify the impact of telecommuting …
The ‘Narod’ In Narodnjaci: Perceptions Of Turbo Folk In Contemporary Sarajevo, Uchechi Esonu
The ‘Narod’ In Narodnjaci: Perceptions Of Turbo Folk In Contemporary Sarajevo, Uchechi Esonu
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Turbo Folk is often associated with the ultranationalism and violence of the Wars of Yugoslav Succession in the nineties. Working from the perspective of people who enjoy this music and/or frequent establishments where Turbo Folk is played in contemporary Sarajevo, I investigate the narratives employed by both listeners and detractors of Turbo Folk. What attributes or values are projected on the genre, in present day Sarajevo? Have these values changed from how the genre was perceived during the war in the 1990s? Is Turbo Folk political or politicized? Based on ethnographic field research conducted over the course of one month …

Cambiar El Negocio De La Finca: Un Perfil Del Agroturismo En La Provincia De Herrera, Julianne Gagnon
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In 2008, Panama formulated a long-term tourism plan for the country, and agritourism was a main element that was being introduced. There are requirements and qualifications for a farm to be considered an agritourism farm by the Panamanian government and these farms are increasing in number each year. A farm must be accredited by both the Ministerio de Desarrollo Agropecuario (MIDA), which evaluates the agricultural practices for “buenas practicas,” and by the Autoridad de Turismo de Panama, which determines if the farm’s infrastructure is compatible with visitors. Since it is such a new form of tourism in Panama it is …

Cresting Toward The Sea Change: Literature Review Of Cataloging And Classification 2009-10, Sue Ann Gardner
Cresting Toward The Sea Change: Literature Review Of Cataloging And Classification 2009-10, Sue Ann Gardner
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
This review covers cataloging and classification literature published in 2009 and 2010, including relevant explorations of knowledge organization systems and theory. Only English-language literature is reviewed, though not all of the literature covered is U.S.-based. Overarching themes presented in the literature include the merging of library metadata into the Web environment, the continuation of cooperative cataloging in libraries, the role of both controlled and uncontrolled headings in catalog records, and reconsiderations of workflow in light of impending changes to cataloging rules. Notably, several relevant foundational documents were either completed or revised during the review period.

Rapid Re-Housing Of Families Experiencing Homelessness In Massachusetts: Maintaining Housing Stability, Tim H. Davis, Terry S. Lane
Rapid Re-Housing Of Families Experiencing Homelessness In Massachusetts: Maintaining Housing Stability, Tim H. Davis, Terry S. Lane
Center for Social Policy Publications
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“Recovery Act”) provided $1.5 billion for the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP), a temporary program that addressed both homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing of families already experiencing homelessness. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocated $44.5 million, including $26.1 million to individual Massachusetts communities and $18.4 million to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Of its funds, the state allocated $8.3 million for rapid re-housing of families who were living in shelters or motels.
This report explores the experiences of 486 of these families who received rapid re-housing assistance …
Arguments For A Living Wage In The United States: Prospects For Persuasion And Expansion, Corinne Bazzinotti
Arguments For A Living Wage In The United States: Prospects For Persuasion And Expansion, Corinne Bazzinotti
College of Management Honors Theses
This thesis explores the living wage, and in particular the varied arguments that support the adoption and spread of the living wage. A “living wage” is a decent wage. “It affords the earner and her or his family the most basic costs of living without need for government support or poverty programs,” and takes into account a, “complete consideration of the cost of living.” The topic is timely, as the economy in the United States remains in decline, and now more than ever the American workforce is struggling to stay afloat, along with businesses across the country.

Creating A Benefit Index For Targeting Investment In Pedestrian Connectivity Improvements East Bayside Neighborhood: Portland, Me, Damon Yakovleff
Creating A Benefit Index For Targeting Investment In Pedestrian Connectivity Improvements East Bayside Neighborhood: Portland, Me, Damon Yakovleff
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
This project demonstrates how a GIS-based analysis of pedestrian accessibility to selected amenities from locations in and around the East Bayside neighborhood of Portland, Maine can help identify and guide decisions about public investment in improving such access. Two street network configurations are analyzed: the current (2011) condition, and a hypothetical configuration including several connectivity improvements currently under discussion or in the process of construction. The GIS tools are used to calculate the network distances between the centroid of the area’s census blocks and two amenities: the nearest full-service grocery store, and an outdoor fitness station available to the public. …
Asset Price Bubble Identification And Response, Paul Atkinson
Asset Price Bubble Identification And Response, Paul Atkinson
Honors Theses and Capstones
This paper investigates the existence of asset price bubbles. It first gives a history of financial crises and asset bubbles around the world throughout history as a background to the issue and then moves into finding the reason why they are able to exist in a market with both rational and irrational participants. Then by looking at the historical data for the United States housing and stock markets sets bubble identification rules based on standard deviation bounds. This method proves to be a very accurate way of identifying bubbles. The best response for both monetary policy authorities and market participants …

A New Moral Socialization Model: Wrongfulness And Legal Atitutde As Mediators In Predicting Adolescent Rule-Violating Behavior, Kristen M. Williams
Honors Theses and Capstones
One of the most baffling questions in delinquency literature is why some adolescents engage in these rule-violating behaviors while others refrain. Some researchers have found support for a link between moral reasoning and rule-violating behaviors (Blasi, 1980). The legal socialization model includes legal attitudes as the mediator between the two (Cohn, Bucolo, Rebellon & Van Gundy, 2010). In the current two studies, the researchers tested a moral socialization model with wrongfulness and approval as mediators based on data from middle and high school students as well as college students. In the first study, the model was tested longitudinally with middle …
