Do Pennsylvania Casinos Cannibalize Pa State Lottery Revenues?, Andrew J. Economopoulos, William Stolle
Do Pennsylvania Casinos Cannibalize Pa State Lottery Revenues?, Andrew J. Economopoulos, William Stolle
Business and Economics Faculty Publications
The first Pennsylvania casino opened its doors in 2006. Studies of other states, and nationally, indicate that casinos cannibalize lottery revenues as consumers substitute lottery spending for casino spending. Pennsylvania time-series data and cross-sectional data for each county suggests that higher casino wagering leads to lower lottery spending. Unlike the other studies, Pennsylvania's rate of cannibalization is relatively low where state lottery revenues decline by five to fifteen cents for each dollar of casino revenue gained. About half of the cannibalization takes place in the counties where the casino resided.

Use Of Cti Grinders For Sorghum Flour Production And Utilization: Final Report, Vilma Ruth Calderón De Zacatares, Lily Marisol López, Kris Emillee Duville, Carla Elizabeth Bermúdez

The use of sorghum for human consumption to add value to the crop and increase its profitability, especially for small and medium producers, has contributed to food security and nutrition in El Salvador. CENTA is promoting the cultivation of sorghum as an alternative to food production in rural and urban areas. Since 2010 when wheat prices lower again, sorghum was no more an alternative to replace wheat in certain types of food, but is being used in more stable markets, as people allergic to gluten, people with diabetes and to correct nutritional deficiencies such as iron deficiency anemia because of …

The importance of sorghum in human nutrition and food security
The grinders of Compatible Technology International (CTI) were brought to El Salvador in 2009, for a project of CENTA-INTSORMIL/USAID to promote the grinding of sorghum for human nutrition. In 2011, ten of these grinders had been installed in small bakers associations, individual bakers, or persons producing ethnic drinks based on roasted and ground cereals. These people had been trained in sorghum use for human nutrition at the food technology laboratory of CENTA. The grinders are being used in areas were the access to other foods is limited and were sorghum …

The Physical Distribution Security System: Who Is Affecting The Vulnerability Of Goods Transprtation?, Luca Urciuoli
Journal of Transportation Management
The purpose of this study is to explore the vulnerability of physical distribution networks to antago- nistic threats. Previous research identifies globalization and Just in Time (JIT) as the main causes of vulnerability. However, cargo crime has always existed, even before the identification of these trends. In this explorative study new factors are brought to light. In particular, it appears that stake- holders’ dynamics are influencing the level of security.
Impressions Of Psychotherapists’ Offices: Do Therapists And Clients Agree?, Ann Sloan Devlin, Jack L. Nasar
Impressions Of Psychotherapists’ Offices: Do Therapists And Clients Agree?, Ann Sloan Devlin, Jack L. Nasar
Psychology Faculty Publications
Do therapists and potential clients similarly evaluate offices of practicing clinicians?Furnishings in a therapist's office can create a welcoming environment, yet little research examines perceptions of such furnishings, leading to the focus of this research. In a previous study with 30 color photographs of psychotherapists' offices, students favored clinical settings that were soft, personalized, and orderly (Nasar & Devlin, 2011). Using the same 30 photographs, the present studies had 32 licensed psychotherapists evaluate the quality of care, comfort in the setting, and therapist qualities they expected clients to experience in each office. The judgments that therapists thought clients would make …
Satire And Dissent: A Theoretical Overview, Amber Day
Satire And Dissent: A Theoretical Overview, Amber Day
English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles
In an age when Jon Stewart tops lists of most-trusted newscasters and Michael Moore becomes a focus of political campaign analysis, the satiric register has attained renewed and urgent prominence in political discourse. Day focuses on three central contemporary forms: the parodic news show, the satiric documentary, and ironic activism. She highlights their shared objective of circumventing the standard conduits of political information and the highly stage-managed nature of current political discourse. In so doing, she argues, they provide fans with a sense of community and purpose notably lacking from organized politics in the twenty-first century.
Are Nfl Athletes Receiving Over-Valued Contracts?, Jason Scott
Are Nfl Athletes Receiving Over-Valued Contracts?, Jason Scott
Honors Projects in Mathematics
Many sport research studies have been conducted that examine the performance of professional athletes and their corresponding effect on franchise winning percentages, team revenues, economic repercussions, performance-based compensation, and much more. Research in the National Football League, however, has been found to be somewhat limited due to the numerous possible positions and resulting vastness of position-specific variables. The NFL lockout in 2011 caused many to question the specific relationship between professional athlete performance and salary distribution. This study’s purpose was to find a collection of variables with which all NFL athletes could be compared, and to identify relationships existing between …

Everyone has different motivations for working, . But the primary incentive for slogging it out in the corporate jungle would be money— at least that is what employers believe. This helps explain why companies are often willing to shell out wads of cash to outbid one another in the labour market for top executives.

Economies In Transition And In Development: A Possible Warning From Adam Smith, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economies In Transition And In Development: A Possible Warning From Adam Smith, Maria Pia Paganelli
Economics Faculty Research
Adam Smith was concerned with the nature and causes of economic growth and development. One may therefore ask if it is possible to use his work, even if only as speculation, in order to gather useful insights about today’s developing or transitional economies. With all the due caveats, this paper asks: if Adam Smith were alive today, what would he say about transitioning and developing economies? Testing whether Adam Smith would be correct in his analysis, I leave to other work.

Information Literacy In The Workplace: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Yuhfen Diana H. Wu
Faculty and Staff Publications
This cross-cultural study has two main purposes: to investigate how information literacy is perceived in the workplace and to discover how employees obtain information to carry out their jobs in an effective and timely fashion. This project applies a mix of research methods, including site visits, interviews, and a survey. More than 120 participants from forty companies were involved in this study. They were from a wide variety of industries in Taiwan and Silicon Valley, in Northern California, where many companies base offices or operations from around the world. Major obstacles in conducting cross-continent research are cost, time demands, scheduling, …

Leadership, Complex Adaptive Systems, And Equivocality: The Role Of Managers In Emergent Change, Robert J. Blomme
Leadership, Complex Adaptive Systems, And Equivocality: The Role Of Managers In Emergent Change, Robert J. Blomme
Organization Management Journal
When managers are confronted with the necessity to change their organization owing to a turbulent and unpredictable environment, their change efforts are often not very successful. As managers are part of the change context itself, they have to act in a way that is different from the traditional role of the administrative leader to become successful change leaders. This article attempts to redefine organizational change using complexity theory and the work of Karl Weick and Ralph Stacey as a basis. Organizational change can be defined as emergent change in complex adaptive systems and is based on self-organizational principles. One important …
