The Country-Specific Nature Of Apparel Elasticities And Impacts Of The Multi-Fibre Arrangement, Lauren A. Martinez May 2012

The Country-Specific Nature Of Apparel Elasticities And Impacts Of The Multi-Fibre Arrangement, Lauren A. Martinez

Economics Honors Projects

Beginning with Krugman and Helpman’s theory of demand for differentiated products, this paper estimates 104 direct price elasticities of demand for apparel in the United States. While the literature has established that apparel elasticities vary by category and across countries, I examine how price elasticities of demand for apparel vary by country, regions, product characteristics, and after the end of the Multi-Fibre Arrangement. Results suggest that the country has the greatest single explanatory power in predicting price elasticities, and additionally, the “race to the bottom” hypothesis in the apparel industry is supported through increasing elasticity of 3.4% from the mean …

Parental Perspectives On Young Adults With Down Syndrome And Online Social Networking Sites, Kimberly Fiser

Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine parental perspectives on the use of online social networking sites by young adults with Down syndrome (DS), specifically how they rate their adult child’s (AC) communicative success, how they view the social implications surrounding social network use, and what value they think social networking has in AC’s day-to-day life. Parents of young adults with DS and access to an online social network were sought to complete a 3 part, online questionnaire. Three parents responded to the questionnaire, and responses given determined that parents consider their AC to be able to communicate via …

Utopia Or An Iron Cage? Marx, Weber, Nietzsche, And The Future Of Modernity, Ryan Steel

Library Research Prize Student Works

Student Library Research Prize winner Ryan Steel discusses modernity and some of its core characteristics and the way they manifest in modern social reality using the perspectives of Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Friedrich Nietzsche as general paradigm models for understanding and critiquing modernity. The paper continues to explore the following themes: general trends that have occurred and are continuing to occur within modern society and the manner in which it affects individuals; the three theorists’ visions of the future for modernity; possible alternatives for the future of modernity outside of those three theorists’ perspectives; and a synthesis of all …

A Temporal Model Of Mindful Interactions Around New Service Conception, Joe Rubleske May 2012

A Temporal Model Of Mindful Interactions Around New Service Conception, Joe Rubleske

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

The organizational ability to innovate is widely acknowledged as crucial to sustained success. For libraries and other service providers, innovation entails the continuous development of new services that propose value to customers. This new service development process can be understood as comprising a "front end," in which new service ideas are conceived and developed, and a "back end," in which selected ideas are implemented. Our understanding of the former - that is, of new service conception in libraries - is particularly underdeveloped.

To build a conceptual foundation for research in this area I used qualitative data collection techniques and constant-comparison …

Crowdsourcing Scientific Work: A Comparative Study Of Technologies, Processes, And Outcomes In Citizen Science, Andrea Wiggins

School of Information Studies - Dissertations

Citizen science projects involve the public with scientists in collaborative research. Information and communication technologies for citizen science can enable massive virtual collaborations based on voluntary contributions by diverse participants. As the popularity of citizen science increases, scientists need a more thorough understanding of how project design and implementation decisions affect scientific outcomes.

Applying a comparative case study methodology, the study investigated project organizers' perspectives and experiences in Mountain Watch, the Great Sunflower Project, and eBird, three observation-based ecological citizen science projects in different scientific domains. Five themes are highlighted in the findings: the influence of project design approaches that …

Revisiting The Economic Impact Of The Natural Gas Activity In The Fayetteville Shale: 2008-2012, Katherine A. Deck, Viktoria Riiman

Publications and Presentations

In 2008, the Center for Business and Economic Research released a study that estimated the economic impact of projected Fayetteville Shale activities from 2008 to 2012. This updated report revisits the assumptions of the initial study, reviews the impact of actual activities in the Fayetteville Shale from 2008 to 2011, and delivers some insights into projected impacts for 2012.

Exploration and production of natural gas in the Fayetteville Shale area generates direct effects from drilling wells and causes the need for supporting activities such as construction, transportation, storage, and distribution. Moreover, investments made by oil and gas companies produce indirect …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And School Performance, Trina M. Ward May 2012

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And School Performance, Trina M. Ward

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Self-esteem is what some may define as self-confidence. School performance is what society may define as participation in the classroom or how much effort you put forth into learning. This research was designed to see if a correlation between school performance and self-esteem exists. Participants were recruited at Lindenwood University and chose to take the study for extra credit in a particular class. Thirty-three participants were assigned to complete a single survey, with questions asking for their views about themselves, their participation in school activities, and demographic questions which included age and sex. Results showed that there was a weak …

Racial Profiling Is Not Specifically Always Black Or White, Samantha Ollie May 2012

Racial Profiling Is Not Specifically Always Black Or White, Samantha Ollie

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The following paper outlines different views of racial profiling. Racial profiling is painted in various lights due to the ambiguity and the magnitude that surrounds this concern. Accusations seem to be on every news headline, but how do we as a public know who was in the right and who was in the wrong and how can he or she prove the true intention of any given situation? Both pros and cons from each side, of an average citizen of the United States of America and also from the law enforcement personnel that live to serve and protect those citizens …

What Factors Influence Consumers’ Decisions To Purchase Energy Star Appliances?, Rosamond Mate May 2012

What Factors Influence Consumers’ Decisions To Purchase Energy Star Appliances?, Rosamond Mate

Economics Honors Projects

This paper examines how differences in operating costs and market availability affect ownership of Energy Star dishwashers and clothes washers. I use logistic regressions and data from the 2009 Residential Energy Consumption Survey and the EPA’s Energy Star program to quantify these effects. Results indicate that controlling for temporal changes is very important; after doing so I find that differences in availability of efficient appliances do not affect ownership patterns. Overall, the frequency of appliance use does not increase the household’s responsiveness to electricity prices, which suggests that consumers do not fully value efficiency when choosing among appliances.

Dilemmas Of Indissoluble Parenthood: Legal Incentives, Parenting, And The Work-Family Balance , Lynn D. Wardle May 2012

Dilemmas Of Indissoluble Parenthood: Legal Incentives, Parenting, And The Work-Family Balance , Lynn D. Wardle

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

Building upon three main points developed by Patrick Parkinson in Family Law and the Indissolubility of Parenthood (2011), this paper shows that globally there is great legal interest in protecting parenting and parent-children relations; that issues grounded in the indissolubility of parenthood arise during ongoing marriages as well as after marital breakup (or nonformation); and that legal reforms to reduce or eliminate laws creating perverse incentives that impede effective, committed parenting should consider regulations regarding intact families as well as never-married and post-divorce families. This article reviews evidence of the deterioration of families and of parenting in society, including rising …

Immigration Crackdown In The American Workplace: Explaining Variation In E-Verify Policy Adoption Across The U.S. States, Benjamin Newman, Christopher Johnston, April Johnson (Strickland) May 2012

Immigration Crackdown In The American Workplace: Explaining Variation In E-Verify Policy Adoption Across The U.S. States, Benjamin Newman, Christopher Johnston, April Johnson (Strickland)

Faculty Articles

Immigration remains a powerful and recurrent feature of American politics. Of the issues related to immigration, controversy over government policy for controlling illegal immigration occupies a central position in the debate. One increasingly important and prevalent type of control policy that has received little scholarly attention is worksite employment eligibility enforcement, otherwise known as E-Verify Laws. In the present article, we analyze variation in E-Verify policy adoption across the U.S. states, approaching the topic from multiple theoretical perspectives and testing several hypotheses pertaining to policy enactment. Our analysis points to the critical role of proportionate change in a state’s immigrant …

Planned Parenthood Takes On Live Action: An Analysis Of Media Interplay And Image Restoration Strategies In Strategic Conflict Management, Leslie Lynn Rasmussen

Dissertations

On February 1, 2011 the pro-life organization Live Action released videos that appeared to show Planned Parenthood clinic staff disregarding statutory rape and abortion reporting laws and aiding sex traffickers. The videos posted online quickly garnered over a million views and placed Planned Parenthood at the forefront of national news. The Federal government intervened and threatened to remove funding to the Title X organization. Planned Parenthood launched a campaign to retain funding using social media and controlled online media, and attempted restore its image as a reputable healthcare provider while engaged in conflict with Live Action.

An Examination Of Perceived Stress Levels And Coping Styles Among Rural Law Enforcement Officers, Marcos Luis Misis May 2012

An Examination Of Perceived Stress Levels And Coping Styles Among Rural Law Enforcement Officers, Marcos Luis Misis

Dissertations

Policing is a very stressful job. Despite the extensive body of research on police stress, the majority of studies have focused solely on officers within urban police departments. Research on stress within rural law enforcement departments is virtually non-existent even though the majority of police agencies in America serve towns and areas under 50,000 residents.

This study had four main goals: (1) to examine how work-related stress affects the levels of perceived stress, anxiety, and depression for rural law enforcement officers; (2) to explore the specific stressors affecting rural law enforcement officers; (3) to investigate how rural law enforcement officers …

An Examination Of Factors Affecting Information Sharing Among Law Enforcement Agencies, Scott Driskill Bransford May 2012

An Examination Of Factors Affecting Information Sharing Among Law Enforcement Agencies, Scott Driskill Bransford

Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate using survey data to find factors or barriers which contributed to local law enforcement participation and support of intelligence information sharing. Following the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York City and Arlington, Virginia, new homeland security initiatives and directives were created from the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Several new initiatives and directives provided new communication opportunities for partnerships between all levels of law enforcement to combat the future threat of domestic terrorism.

The evaluation literature indicated that a majority of post-9/11, initiatives, including the creation of …

The Impact Of Citizens' Knowledge On Public Administration: Exploring The Links In Three Social Movements, Vadym Pyrozhenko May 2012

The Impact Of Citizens' Knowledge On Public Administration: Exploring The Links In Three Social Movements, Vadym Pyrozhenko

Public Administration - Dissertations

The dissertation develops a conceptual framework linking social knowledge and public administration. Social knowledge is understood broadly as the knowledge used by people in various roles, including experts, ordinary citizens, and public officials, to solve social problems. Social movement knowledge is examined as one particular type of social knowledge. The conceptual framework used to study the relationship between social movement knowledge and public administration is a combination of several literatures: citizen participation, civic innovations, community of practice, policy learning, and knowledge production in social movements. The framework connects social movement, policy expert, and administrative knowledge through the processes of social, …

The Essays On Unintended Consequences Of Public Policy, Andrew Ira Friedson May 2012

The Essays On Unintended Consequences Of Public Policy, Andrew Ira Friedson

Economics - Dissertations

This dissertation studies three examples of public policies having consequences other than those intended when the policy was passed. They demonstrate that due to the interconnectedness of the economy, the intended effect of a policy is rarely the sole effect.

The first essay examines the Texas Top 10% Plan. This policy guarantees automatic admission to their state university of choice for all high school seniors who graduate in the top 10% of their high school class. The essay shows evidence that households reacted strategically to this policy by moving to neighborhoods with lower-performing schools, increasing property values by 4.9 percent …

Individualism And Collectivism As Moderators Of Affect And Attributional Style In Predicting Life Satisfaction, Jo M. Holmquest May 2012

Individualism And Collectivism As Moderators Of Affect And Attributional Style In Predicting Life Satisfaction, Jo M. Holmquest

Graduate Theses

The present study examined the effect of person-level individualism and collectivism on attributional style and frequencies of positive and negative emotions as predictors of life satisfaction. Participants were 224 individuals (age range 18 to 78, M= 39.63, SD = 13.78; 73% women; 56% Filipinos) who answered an online survey. Results from regression analyses showed that attributional style is not a statistically significant predictor of life satisfaction. The analyses also showed that across all participants, and among those who did not score high in individualism and low in collectivism, the frequency of positive emotions, as compared to the frequency of negative …

Imagine yourself at the age of four or five; picture your biggest worries, your biggest fears. Did these emotions even exist? Would you ever have considered yourself a “survivor” as a toddler? One Colombian boy I interviewed has answered these questions, and surprisingly, he answered yes. Yes, he had substantial worries and fears. Yes, he always has been a survivor. By the time he was a toddler, Andres began to evolve into becoming the person he is today. He had no other choice. He has gone through battles that most people do not encounter throughout their entire lifetime. Andres is …
