Mixed-Income Developments And Low Rates Of Return Insights From Relocated Public Housing Residents In Chicago, Mark L. Joseph May 2012

Mixed-Income Developments And Low Rates Of Return Insights From Relocated Public Housing Residents In Chicago, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

In the largest poverty deconcentration effort in any city in the US, all high-rise public housing family developments in Chicago have been demolished and are being replaced by mixed-income developments. Advocates for public housing residents have worked hard to negotiate a "right to return" to the new mixed income developments. Yet, as in other cities across the country, the rates of return to the new developments have been very low. Little is understood about residents’ perceptions of their options or the factors that drive their relocation decisions. This article examines relocation decisions using data from in-depth interviews with a panel …

Mediating And Moderating Effects On The Association Between Vision Loss And Depression Among An Older Population, Terry L. Stone, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Walter Wittich May 2012

Mediating And Moderating Effects On The Association Between Vision Loss And Depression Among An Older Population, Terry L. Stone, Jonathan Bruce Santo, Walter Wittich

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to gain a more holistic view of the association between depression and visual functioning by examining possible mediating and moderating factors. Previous research has established a linkage between low life satisfaction and coping skills and depressive symptoms. Results of this study contribute to this literature by indicating that life satisfaction partially mediates the relationship between visual functioning and depression. Furthermore, a significant coping by visual functioning interaction was discovered, revealing that among this sample, visual impairment is associated with higher levels of depression among individuals with low coping skills; however, little effect was found …

Promoting Awareness Of The Unlv University Archives, Tom D. Sommer May 2012

Promoting Awareness Of The Unlv University Archives, Tom D. Sommer

Scholarship Colloquium

Promoting awareness of the University Archives has evolved for me for the past six years as University Archivist. It started out as an idea that quickly grew into a wonderful relationship between the University Archives and the rest of UNLV. I originally promoted awareness through outreach services as a librarian in Oro Valley, Arizona. It was a nice way for the organization to get the word out about the new library in the neighborhood. I started by reading novels to kids in Summer Camps at the nearby middle and high schools. It was a lot of fun and I was …

Scholarship Colloquium

So What's The Problem?
CML’s juvenile literature collection serves a three-fold purpose

• Supporting academic study of children’s/young adult literature

• Leisure reading collection

• Providing materials for use by CCSD teachers and students

Which means…

• Amazon’s e-book sales (and other info.) can guide leisure reading trends

• BUT…we also need input and buy-in from UNLV instructors and CCSD teachers

Victim-Blaming: A New Term For An Old Trend, Julia Churchill Schoellkopf May 2012

Victim-Blaming: A New Term For An Old Trend, Julia Churchill Schoellkopf

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Center

Victim-blaming is a phenomenon that has been happening since at least the beginning of recorded history but has only recently been identified as a dynamic used to empower the criminal and maintain the status quo. Victim-blaming is perpetuated by sexism, the Just World Theory, cognitive biases, and the theories of self-blame. Victim-blaming occurs when the victim of a crime or abuse is held partly or entirely responsible for the actions committed against them. In other words, the victims are held accountable for the maltreatment they have been subjected to. Perpetrators of crimes for which they blame the victim commonly enjoy …

The selected topics are intended to ground the EarthCube roadmap in the state of the art in semantics research and ontology engineering.

We anticipate that this document will evolve as EarthCube progresses. Indeed, all EarthCube parties are asked to provide topics of importance that should be treated in …

Renters More Often Burdened By Housing Costs After Recession: Nearly Half Of All Renters Spent Over 30 Percent Of Income On Housing By 2010, Jessica A. Bean May 2012

Renters More Often Burdened By Housing Costs After Recession: Nearly Half Of All Renters Spent Over 30 Percent Of Income On Housing By 2010, Jessica A. Bean

Carsey Publications

This brief uses data from the 2007 and 2010 American Community Survey to document changes in the proportion of household income spent on rental costs (rent plus utilities) during the Great Recession, by region (Northeast, Midwest, South, and West) and place type (rural, suburban, or central city location). Particular attention is paid to how patterns of cost burden vary among renters of different ages and income levels and to the policy implications of these findings. Author Jessica Bean reports that nationwide, nearly half (49 percent) of all renters were “cost burdened” in 2010, spending more than 30 percent of their …

Multidimensional Item Response Theory In Clinical Measurement: A Bifactor Graded-Response Model Analysis Of The Outcome-Questionnaire-45.2, Arjan Berkeljon May 2012

Multidimensional Item Response Theory In Clinical Measurement: A Bifactor Graded-Response Model Analysis Of The Outcome-Questionnaire-45.2, Arjan Berkeljon

Theses and Dissertations

Bifactor Item Response Theory (IRT) models are presented as a plausible structure for psychological measures with a primary scale and two or more subscales. A bifactor graded response model, appropriate for polytomous categorical data, was fit to two university counseling center datasets (N=4,679 and N=4,500) of Outcome-Questionnaire-45.2 (OQ) psychotherapy intake data. The bifactor model showed superior fit compared to a unidimensional IRT model. IRT item parameters derived from the bifactor model show that items discriminate well on the primary scale. Items on the OQ's subscales maintain some discrimination ability over and above the primary scale. However, reliability estimates for the …
