The Impact Of Mindfulness On Exposure And Extinction Processes In Social Anxiety, Michael Treanor Jun 2012

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Exposure And Extinction Processes In Social Anxiety, Michael Treanor

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The present study sought to examine the potential impact of brief mindfulness inductions to enhance exposure and extinction processes in social anxiety. Mindfulness may enhance extinction through increased awareness of multiple conditioned excitors (thereby "overpredicting" the occurrence of an aversive outcome) or by acting as a retrieval cue to mitigate return of fear. Twenty-two participants high in social anxiety were recruited to participate in a series of massed exposures. Latent growth curve analyses revealed that participants who received mindfulness inductions prior to exposure procedures demonstrated enhanced extinction learning as measured by expectancy ratings, but not when measured by distress, state …

Negotiating Crisis In The New Media Environment: Evolution Of Crises Online, Gaining Legitimacy Offline, Augustine Pang, Nasrath Begam Abul Hassan, Aaron Chee Yang Chong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines how crises originate online, how different new media platforms escalate crises, and how issues become legitimized offline when they transit onto mainstream media. We study five social media crises, which includes United breaks guitars and Southwest Air’s too fat to fly. Crises are triggered online when stakeholders are empowered by new media platforms that allow user-generated content to be posted online without any filtering. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter emerge as top crises breeding grounds due to their large user base and the lack of gatekeeping. Facebook and blogs are responsible for escalating crises beyond the immediate stakeholder …

Repairing An Organization’S Image In Times Of Crises: What Strategies To Use When?, Augustine Pang, Benjamin Meng-Keng Ho, Nuraini Malik

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The image repair theory has been described as the “dominant paradigm for examining corporate communication in times of crises” (Dardis & Haigh, 2009, p. 101). While the theory, which posits five major strategies and 14 sub-strategies, has been applied extensively, a fundamental question remains: What strategies should be used when? Through meta-analysis of the image repair studies, we examine the persuasiveness/effectiveness in the use of different strategies. This study addresses the call by Haigh and Brubaker (2010) to conduct more studies to understand the use of strategies across different crisis types with a view to providing a template to equip …

Reserve Capacity Model And Metabolic Syndrome In Black And White Seventh-Day Adventists, Taylor L. Draper Jun 2012

Reserve Capacity Model And Metabolic Syndrome In Black And White Seventh-Day Adventists, Taylor L. Draper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Past research has identified a robust, monotonic relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and cardiac health. Psychosocial factors may contribute to SES-related gradients in cardiac health. The Reserve Capacity Model (RCM; Gallo & Matthews, 2003) is a framework for examining psychosocial pathways in cardiac health disparities on the SES gradient. The model posits that a lower SES experience leads to more environmental stressors and fewer psychosocial resources (e.g., reserve capacity) to cope with these stressors subsequently eroding health. A number of studies have used the RCM to explain SES-related disparities in cardiac health in Whites and Latinos; few examine the model …

Batterers' Perception Of Treatment Non-Completion, Zoila Gordon Jun 2012

Batterers' Perception Of Treatment Non-Completion, Zoila Gordon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine reasons why batterers drop out of batterers’ intervention programs. A qualitative design was utilized within the framework of Gove’s Prime Physical Theory, Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory and Braithwaite’s Reintegrative Shaming Theory. Data collection included interviewing a sample of 22 court mandated male batterers, who had initially dropped out of treatment and had been reinstated. Participants were from a diverse background. Results indicated five key themes that emerged from the batterers’ responses: (1) An overall lack of trust toward the legal system which greatly contributed to anger upon entering group; (2) a lack of …

Gestalt Group Psychotherapy With Incarcerated Schizophrenia: A Qualitative Study, Leslie Ann V. Dobson Jun 2012

Gestalt Group Psychotherapy With Incarcerated Schizophrenia: A Qualitative Study, Leslie Ann V. Dobson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In the U.S., the number of inmates diagnosed with schizophrenia is approximately four times greater than that found in the general population. Alarmingly, these inmates rarely receive the mental health treatment they need. Previous studies have suggested that Gestalt therapy can have beneficial affects for inmates. However, further research examining treatment models for inmates diagnosed with schizophrenia is needed. This current study examined qualitative data from a proposed Gestalt group therapy treatment model for incarcerated schizophrenia. Results from modified analytic induction demonstrated increased levels of participation, autonomy, interpersonal skills, information seeking and a reduction in psychotic symptoms. This study also …

Traditional Tests For Implication Of Terms Prevail In Singapore Despite ‘Acceptance’ Of Belize Test: Sembcorp Marine Ltd V Ppl Holdings Pte Ltd, Yihan Goh Jun 2012

Traditional Tests For Implication Of Terms Prevail In Singapore Despite ‘Acceptance’ Of Belize Test: Sembcorp Marine Ltd V Ppl Holdings Pte Ltd, Yihan Goh

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is an ongoing legal debate concerning the test governing the implication of terms in fact, prompted in no small measure by Lord Hoffmann’s influential speech in Attorney General of Belize v Belize Telecom. In Belize, Lord Hoffmann famously said that the question for a court considering whether a term should be implied is ‘whether such a [term] would spell out in express words what the instrument, read against the relevant background, would reasonably be understood to mean’. This has generally been regarded by judges3 and academics4 as subsuming the implication of terms within the broader rubric of ‘interpretation’. The …

Addressing Change In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Classical Organizational Theory And Implications For Academic Libraries, Glenn S. Mcguigan Jun 2012

Addressing Change In Academic Libraries: A Review Of Classical Organizational Theory And Implications For Academic Libraries, Glenn S. Mcguigan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

While in the literature of Library and information Science (LIS) there is much discussion of organizational approaches to solve the problems and opportunities posed by change, there is surprisingly little reference to the “classical” foundations of organizational theory. While by no means comprehensive, the purpose of this article is to provide an overview of classical organizational theory for academic librarians to inform the discussions of change.

How should academic libraries respond to change? Change impacts academic libraries from many dimensions, causing an intensity of introspection and soul searching never before seen in the field’s history. This self-reflection brings into …

Cataloguing In The Era Of Ict: What Is Happening In Public Libraries Of South-East Nigeria, Jacintha U. Eze Jun 2012

Cataloguing In The Era Of Ict: What Is Happening In Public Libraries Of South-East Nigeria, Jacintha U. Eze

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

The public library, being a local centre for information – making a variety of information and knowledge available to its users, requires a well planned and good method of organizing and keeping the records of its materials. This is the reason why cataloguing and classification in any library should be given the necessary professional touch(s) especially in the era information communication technology (ICT). ICT in the words of Ejedafiru (2010) refers to technology that transmits, stores, creates, displays, shares, or exchanges information by electronic means.

Cataloguing and classification of a book simply put, has to do with sieving out …

Connectivity And Accessibility In Nigerian University Libraries: A Survey Of Access, Usage, And Problems In The University Of Nigeria, Nsukka, E.D. Chigbu, C.L. Dim

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

The Internet is a connection of computers around the world to share data and information. It started life in America in the 1960s. It was later popularized by the United States National Science Foundation (NSFNET), the first nationwide educational network linking universities and academic research establishments. In the 1990s the CERN laboratories of Switzerland and the European laboratory for practical physics jointly developed the most rapidly growing part of the Internet. This is known as World Wide Web (WWW). This allows graphics and even video to be moved across telephone lines, bringing about more possibilities to the Internet.

Workers Training Programmes In Two University Libraries In Nigeria, M. A. Adeniji, G. A. Babalola, Moses A. Adeniji

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction

The most valuable resources in Nigeria higher institutions are the human resource; these personnel serve as a major factor in success or failure of various citadels of learning. Human resources in higher institution according to Alani (1993) are the lecturers, librarians, administrators, technical and unskilled personnel. These human resources co-ordinate and process other material resources to produce educational output. The academic staff is directly responsible for teaching and research and they form the bulk of personnel engaged in institutional services, while the administrative, technical and other staff provide a supporting service to the academic staff.

Libraries play an important …

Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng Lin, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh Jun 2012

Nature Of Vix Jumps On Market Timing Of Hedge Funds, Yueh-Neng Lin, Choo Yong, Jeremy Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The study indicates that Brownian motion, finite and infinite activity jumps are present in the ultra-high frequency VIX data. The total quadratic variation can be split into a continuous component of 29% and a jump component of 71%. Jump activities on ultra-high frequency VIX data are found informative in ex-ante identifying subgroups of hedge funds that deliver significant outperformance. In the months that follow large jumps, strategies exposing to long volatility and extreme risk tend to deliver positive performance in extreme market environments. In the months that follow small jumps, possibly as a result of trading illiquidity, most fund strategies …

Corporate Image Vacuum: Nature, Characteristics And Implications For The Organization, Noraizah Zainal Abidin, Augustine Pang Jun 2012

Corporate Image Vacuum: Nature, Characteristics And Implications For The Organization, Noraizah Zainal Abidin, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A good corporate image is important to organizations (Benoit & Pang, 2008). Even then, some organizations do not have one (Bernstein, 1984/1989; Walker, 2010). Arguably the first study to explicate the notion of corporate image vacuum through the development of the Corporate Image Grid Framework, this study examines how an image vacuum is generated and what organizations can do to fill it. The framework offers a systematic way of assessing an organization’s image to heighten practitioners’ awareness of image management of their organizations. Four organizations drawn from Fortune 2011 list of 50 most admired organizations are studied: Singapore Airlines, Google, …

Testing For Jumps In Noisy High Frequency Data, Yacine Ait-Sahalia, Jean Jacod, Jia Li Jun 2012

Testing For Jumps In Noisy High Frequency Data, Yacine Ait-Sahalia, Jean Jacod, Jia Li

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper proposes a robustification of the test statistic of Aït-Sahalia and Jacod (2009b) for the presence of market microstructure noise in high frequency data, based on the pre-averaging method of Jacod et al. (2010). We show that the robustified statistic restores the test's discriminating power between jumps and no jumps despite the presence of market microstructure noise in the data.

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report summarizes the results of a national random-digit-dial public opinion poll that asked 1,519 respondents if they would support various tax options for raising federal transportation revenues, with a special focus on understanding support for increasing revenues for public transit. Eleven specific tax options tested were variations on raising the federal gas tax rate and creating a new mileage tax, and creating a new federal sales tax. Other questions probed various perceptions related to public transit, including knowledge and opinions about federal taxes to support transit. In addition, the survey collected data on standard socio-demographic factors, travel behavior (public …

Residential On-Site Carsharing And Off-Street Parking Policy In The San Francisco Bay Area, Research Report 11-28, Charles Rivasplata, Zhan Guo, Richard W. Lee, David Keyon

Mineta Transportation Institute

In light of rising motorization, transportation planners have increasingly supported alternatives to the indiscriminate use of the car. Off-street parking policy and carsharing have emerged as credible alternatives for discouraging car ownership. This report explores an initiative that could connect these policy fields and build on their synergy: the provision of on-site carsharing service in residential developments. It evaluates the performance of on-site carsharing programs in the San Francisco Bay Area by interviewing developers, planners, and carsharing service providers. Interviews were conducted in four Bay Area cities that support the provision of carsharing as an alternative to the private automobile. …

Random Dictatorship Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen, Huaxia Zeng Jun 2012

Random Dictatorship Domains, Shurojit Chatterji, Arunava Sen, Huaxia Zeng

Research Collection School Of Economics

A domain of preference orderings is a random dictatorship domain if every strategy- proof random social choice function satisfying unanimity defined on the domain, is a random dictatorship. Gibbard (1977) showed that the universal domain is a random dictatorship domain. We investigate the relationship between dictatorial and random dictatorship domains. We show that there exist dictatorial domains that are not random dictatorship domains. We provide stronger versions of the linked domain condition (introduced in Aswal et al. (2003)) that guarantee that a domain is a random dictatorship domain. A key step in these arguments that is of independent interest, is …

Dynamic Misspecification In Nonparametric Cointegrating Regression, Ioannis Kasparis, Peter C. B. Phillips Jun 2012

Dynamic Misspecification In Nonparametric Cointegrating Regression, Ioannis Kasparis, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

Linear cointegration is known to have the important property of invariance under temporal translation. The same property is shown not to apply for nonlinear cointegration. The limit properties of the Nadaraya-Watson (NW) estimator for cointegrating regression under misspecified lag structure are derived, showing the NW estimator to be inconsistent, in general, with a "pseudo-true function" limit that is a local average of the true regression function. In this respect nonlinear cointegrating regression differs importantly from conventional linear cointegration which is invariant to time translation. When centred on the pseudo-true function and appropriately scaled, the NW estimator still has a mixed …

Nonlinear Cointegrating Regression Under Weak Identification, Xiaoxia Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips Jun 2012

Nonlinear Cointegrating Regression Under Weak Identification, Xiaoxia Shi, Peter C. B. Phillips

Research Collection School Of Economics

An asymptotic theory is developed for a weakly identified cointegrating regression model in which the regressor is a nonlinear transformation of an integrated process. Weak identification arises from the presence of a loading coefficient for the nonlinear function that may be close to zero. In that case, standard nonlinear cointegrating limit theory does not provide good approximations to the finite-sample distributions of nonlinear least squares estimators, resulting in potentially misleading inference. A new local limit theory is developed that approximates the finite-sample distributions of the estimators uniformly well irrespective of the strength of the identification. An important technical component of …

Development Challenges Of Secondary And Small Airports In California, Research Report 11-21, Senanu Ashiabor, Wenbin Wei

Mineta Transportation Institute

This study investigates the development of secondary and smaller airports in California. Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) business is growing at these airports because they offer reduced operating costs, and they have adequate capacity to help LCCs avoid battling with incumbent airlines at the large hubs for limited resources, such as gates. However, increased LCC aircraft operations at the secondary airports have led to significant noise impacts on the surrounding communities and this has been a challenge for the secondary airport operators. They have imposed operational curfews to limit the noise impacts, but this approach constrains the resident airlines that want to …

Collaborative Funding To Facilitate Airport Ground Access, Research Report 11-27, Geoffrey D. Gosling, Wenbin Wei, Dennis Freeman

Mineta Transportation Institute

This report presents the findings and conclusions from a research study that has examined the challenges of funding airport ground access projects and the role of collaborative funding strategies between the different agencies that typically become involved in such projects. The report reviews the recent literature on funding airport ground access projects, as well as funding transportation projects more generally. This is followed by a detailed review of current federal transportation funding programs relevant to airport ground access projects, as well as a discussion of state and local funding programs and potential opportunities for private-sector funding. A major component of …
