Posthumanist Rhetorical Agency, Matt Dunn Jun 2012

Posthumanist Rhetorical Agency, Matt Dunn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The postmodern criticism of humanist agency initiated by Dilip Gaonkar nearly twenty years ago set in motion a discipline wide discussion concerning the conceptualization rhetorical agency. Rhetorical agency is difficult but vital to conceptualize because the term bears directly on the discipline's theorizing about the speaker or rhetor, the effect of the speaker or rhetor's rhetoric on an audience, and the extent to which the speaker or rhetor's agency is constrained by ideology and discourse. What emerged from this discussion about agency did distance the discipline from the humanist conceptualization of rhetorical agency that persisted at the time Gaonkar published …

Just A Mutt: A Narrative Ethnography Of The Denver Dog Park Master Plan Process, Stephen M. Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This ethnographic study explores the phenomenon of citizen participation in the decision-making process of their local government. The researcher explored this topic by observing the Dog Park Master Plan process conducted by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City and County of Denver from June 2009 through April 2011.

The researcher attended and observed seven meetings of a citizens committee convened by the Denver Parks and Recreation Department to act as a mini-public to test the elements of the Dog Park Master Plan before presenting the Plan to the public, and the three public meetings held to allow the …

Kicking The Can, Peter Ellis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Kicking the Can is a video documentary that explores the financial crisis of 2008 and the socio-political factors that led to the collapse. The documentary was produced over the course of a year and a half, and contains interviews with economists, politicians, academics, and U.S. citizens. To What Degree Can Potable Water Foster International Economic Development And Sustainability? What Role Does Health Play?, Bruce Clemens, Thomas J. Douglas

Organization Management Journal

Governments, international organizations, and practitioners have long proclaimed that investments in potable water supply and sanitation and improvements in public health lead to economic development in the developing world. Unfortunately, scholars have not been able to quantify these relationships for a plethora of reasons. This study found significant, positive relationships between investments in integrated projects of potable water supply combined with sanitation and public health and economic development. The study also moderately supported the hypothesis that the relationship between investments in such projects and economic development is stronger in the presence of better health. The article concludes with hopes that …

Wild Justice Redux: What We Know About Social Justice In Animals And Why It Matters, Jessica Pierce, Marc Bekoff Jun 2012

Wild Justice Redux: What We Know About Social Justice In Animals And Why It Matters, Jessica Pierce, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

Social justice in animals is beginning to attract interest in a broad range of academic disciplines. Justice is an important area of study because it may help explain social dynamics among individuals living in tightly- knit groups, as well as social interactions among individuals who only occasionally meet. In this paper, we provide an overview of what is currently known about social justice in animals and offer an agenda for further research. We provide working definitions of key terms, outline some central research questions, and explore some of the challenges of studying social justice in animals, as well as the …

Effect Of Pen Size, Group Size, And Stocking Density On Activity In Freestall-Housed Dairy Cows, E. Telezhenko, Marina A.G. Von Keyserlingk, A. Talebi, Daniel M. Weary

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

The purpose was to determine the effects of the physical dimensions of the pen and group size and stocking density on cow activity. Cows (randomly assigned to 4 groups of 6 animals each) were tested in pens with 24 or 12 lying places and in groups with 12 or 6 cows. All groups were tested in each of the 4 treatments with treatment order allocated using a 4 × 4 Latin square. The distance moved and the number of movements were calculated using 5-min scan sampling of video recordings over a 48-h period. Time spent lying down, number of lying …

The Journey To Peace And Healing: Discovering Identity Through Culture, Tradition, And Indigenous Knowledege, Vanessa Baíz Soto Jun 2012

The Journey To Peace And Healing: Discovering Identity Through Culture, Tradition, And Indigenous Knowledege, Vanessa Baíz Soto

Ethnic Studies

An accurate account of U.S. history is that of imperialism and colonization that includes the systematic extermination of indigenous populations, development of capitalism supported by slavery, and the exploitation of labor of oppressed populations, all supported by racist ideologies and practices. These ideologies and practices have been perpetuated and continue to plague the current state of colonized peoples. History has perpetuated itself and colonized peoples remain in a state of siege in which identities have been lost and cultures, traditions, and knowledge appropriated—all contributing to the loss of peace and balance within our lives and communities. This has been my …

Prolepsis And The Environmental Rhetoric Of Congressional Politics: Defeating The Climate Stewardship Act Of 2003, Richard Besel Jun 2012

Prolepsis And The Environmental Rhetoric Of Congressional Politics: Defeating The Climate Stewardship Act Of 2003, Richard Besel

Communication Studies

As a device of argumentative anticipation, prolepsis use generally is considered a positive rhetorical strategy. Turning to the Climate Stewardship Act (CSA) of 2003, this article contributes to our understanding of environmental communication, political argumentation, and rhetorical theory by examining how proleptic miscalculation can actually produce devastating consequences against one’s cause when used as a source of invention. Proponents of the CSA relied on creating proleptic arguments grounded in a scientific understanding of climate change to such an extent that they mistakenly downplayed the economic arguments against the Act. This orchestrated miscalculation was encouraged and strengthened by key US senators. …

Discrepant Visual Speech Faciliates Covert Selective Listening In "Cocktail Party" Conditions, Jason A. Williams Jun 2012

Discrepant Visual Speech Faciliates Covert Selective Listening In "Cocktail Party" Conditions, Jason A. Williams

Psychology and Child Development

The presence of congruent visual speech information facilitates the identification of auditory speech, while the addition of incongruent visual speech information often impairs accuracy. This latter arrangement occurs naturally when one is being directly addressed in conversation but listens to a different speaker. Under these conditions, performance may diminish since: (a) one is bereft of the facilitative effects of the corresponding lip motion and (b) one becomes subject to visual distortion by incongruent visual speech; by contrast, speech intelligibility may be improved due to (c) bimodal localization of the central unattended stimulus. Participants were exposed to centrally presented visual and …

Redefining, Crafting, And Re/Presenting Contemporary Ethnicities: Honduran National Identity, 1994–2006, Cordelia A. Frewen Jun 2012

Redefining, Crafting, And Re/Presenting Contemporary Ethnicities: Honduran National Identity, 1994–2006, Cordelia A. Frewen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, Fourth World populations, including those in Honduras, have been steadily gaining partial recognition of cultural rights; yet often official discourses of national identity continue to subsume cultural traditions of indigenous and Afro-descendant communities. Honduras's heterogeneous ethnic pluralism has historically been combined to promote a more cohesive national identity of a homogenized, mayanized, indo-Hispanic mestizaje. Exclusion and mis- or under-representation of indigenous groups is reinforced by popular imagination, particularly in the cultural heritage and tourism sectors. Firmly situated within regional Latin American and global trends, over the past two decades, official discourse on …

Fostering And Foreclosing Student Learning Potential: Portraits Of Performativity, Emotion, And Relationality In The Classroom, Jeanne Marie Jacobs Jun 2012

Fostering And Foreclosing Student Learning Potential: Portraits Of Performativity, Emotion, And Relationality In The Classroom, Jeanne Marie Jacobs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation endeavors to build a much-needed bridge between the fields of communication and education. Using critical pedagogy and critical communication pedagogy as theoretical frameworks, this project advances an understanding of classroom communication as constitutive of power relations, and teachers and students as agents who can work together to foster learning potential and social justice. I look to interdisciplinary scholarship on affect to craft a nuanced conceptual framework of the connection between communication and emotion, and how they create learning opportunities for some students and construct barriers to learning for others. Through ethnographic fieldwork at an urban magnet school, I …

Elis: Embedded Library Instruction Services, Michael F. Strahan, Sarajane Jones Tompkins Jun 2012

Elis: Embedded Library Instruction Services, Michael F. Strahan, Sarajane Jones Tompkins

Conference Presentations

An 11+ year collaboration between faculty and librarians at a Michigan comprehensive (II-A) university evolved from individual innovation to a campus-wide program, Embedded Library Instruction Services (ELIS). ELIS is introduced as a model for embedding personal librarian support and instruction in academic courses utilizing various course management systems. ELIS contains four elements necessary for successfully infusing library support with course instruction: library resources & services, course specific library instruction, librarian instructor collaboration, and student/ faculty needs assessment. The presenters will discuss the history of embedded librarianship at Olson Library; define the four elements; discuss implementation; and address factors affecting the …

General Motors Company: Restructured To Rediscover American Innovation, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Stefan Michalski, Joel Winbigler, Trevor Wind

Robins Case Network

Many analysts predicted that General Motors was not salvageable. However, after a government-backed restructuring, the company seems to be doing much better. The big question is whether the turnaround is sustainable. The company is investing heavily in technology in an effort to continue its record of success. This case examines GM up to its reorganization and also details its current strategies.

Greater Benefits Of Multisensory Integration During Complex Sensorimotor Transformations., Verena N Buchholz, Samanthi C Goonetilleke, W Pieter Medendorp, Brian D Corneil

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Multisensory integration enables rapid and accurate behavior. To orient in space, sensory information registered initially in different reference frames has to be integrated with the current postural information to produce an appropriate motor response. In some postures, multisensory integration requires convergence of sensory evidence across hemispheres, which would presumably lessen or hinder integration. Here, we examined orienting gaze shifts in humans to visual, tactile, or visuotactile stimuli when the hands were either in a default uncrossed posture or a crossed posture requiring convergence across hemispheres. Surprisingly, we observed the greatest benefits of multisensory integration in the crossed posture, as indexed …
