The Role Of Informal Politics In Environmental Governance In East Uluguru Mountains In Tanzania, Christopher Mahonge Jun 2012

The Role Of Informal Politics In Environmental Governance In East Uluguru Mountains In Tanzania, Christopher Mahonge

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Informal politics exercises a significant influence on formal decision making arrangements although its interplay with formal arrangements has conventionally been ignored. This study investigates how informal politics affects the operationalisation of a formally sanctioned initiative in the sphere of environmental governance. Nyachilo village, situated in the East Uluguru Mountains, was the site of the fieldwork of this study. The establishment of participatory environmental management in this village, through village environmental management committees, aimed at bringing a balance between the twin objectives of environmental conservation and development. However, the two-year experience in the implementation of this community-based environmental management approach has …

Globalization, Labor Market Transformation, And Union Decline In U.S. Metropolitan Areas, Todd Vachon Jun 2012

Globalization, Labor Market Transformation, And Union Decline In U.S. Metropolitan Areas, Todd Vachon

Master's Theses

In this study, I analyze the determinants of total, private, and public sector union density among 191 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas in the year 2000. In particular, I examine the effects of five measures of globalization (global capital, foreign direct investment, exports, foreign-born citizens, and foreign-born non-citizens) and four measures of labor market transformation (deindustrialization, corporate restructuring, bureaucratic burden, and casualization) on metropolitan union density while controlling for labor market structure, the business cycle, and the political climate. My analysis demonstrates that: 1) globalization and labor market transformation have moderately negative, but cross-cutting effects on union density; 2) globalization has …

"Someday We'll Find It." An Inside Look At The Music And Cultural Perspectives Of The Muppet Movie, Eric Dancy Jun 2012

"Someday We'll Find It." An Inside Look At The Music And Cultural Perspectives Of The Muppet Movie, Eric Dancy

The Hilltop Review

Tradition in any culture helps showcase a group of people's identity. Whether it is food, music, politics, college football, family rituals, you name it, people are looking to feel appreciated because they associate with a certain group of people. When people within a group break tradition, name-calling, bullying and even physical harming becomes more common, because they do not "fit the norm." Sadly, these kinds of negative behaviors can cause serious mental and physical damage to those who try to "think outside the box." Interestingly though, the ones who tend to think creatively are ultimately the ones who bring something …

Imagining Women In U.S. Politics: The Problem Of Sisterhood In The Long 1960s, Sara Bijani Jun 2012

Imagining Women In U.S. Politics: The Problem Of Sisterhood In The Long 1960s, Sara Bijani

The Hilltop Review

The gendered expectations of the masculinist political establishment of the long 1960s made it difficult for women to define their own unique terrain as politicians. Even with the guarantee of formal political rights firmly in place, women's status as second class citizens persisted throughout the long 1960s. Often, women were forced into frames that defined their political interests around their embodied sex, rather than the needs of their constituents. This imagined construction of women as a separate subject class established a fundamentally unequal platform for women's participation as first class citizens of the United States. While ideological differences between male …

Mathematics Achievement Gaps Between Suburban Students And Their Rural And Urban Peers Increase Over Time, Suzanne E. Graham, Lauren E. Provost

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Suzanne Graham and Lauren Provost examine whether attending a school in a rural, urban, or suburban community is related to children’s mathematics achievement in kindergarten, and whether increases in mathematics achievement between kindergarten and eighth grade differ for children in rural, urban, and suburban schools. They also consider whether achievement differs by region of the country and for children of different racial and ethnic groups. Finally, they discuss the impact of a family’s socioeconomic status, and the ways in which place and socioeconomic status together affect both early mathematics achievement levels and change over time. They …

Hello! Or, How I Got Here, Hannah R. Leone Jun 2012

Hello! Or, How I Got Here, Hannah R. Leone

Blogging the Library

If you frequent the library, chances are you’ve seen me at the circulation desk. I’ve been a circulation desk assistant since my freshman orientation almost two years ago. I’ve loved libraries, books, and reading since before I started kindergarten, so the library seemed like a natural place for me to find my on-campus job. I soon fell in love with working at the desk; I particularly liked when I got to go into the stacks to look for an item that a patron couldn’t find or that had been requested for Inter-Library Loan. Inside The Black Box: Revealing The Process In Applying A Grounded Theory Analysis, Peter Rich Jun 2012

Inside The Black Box: Revealing The Process In Applying A Grounded Theory Analysis, Peter Rich

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research methods have long set an example of rich description, in which data and researchers’ hermeneutics work together to inform readers of findings in specific contexts. Among published works, insight into the analytical process is most often represented in the form of methodological propositions or research results. This paper presents a third type of qualitative report, one in which the researcher’s process of coding, finding themes, and arriving at findings is the focus. Grounded theory analysis methods were applied to the interpretation of a single interview. The resulting document provides a narrative of the process one researcher followed when …

Getting To Grips With Bricolage: A Personal Account, Christopher Wibberley Jun 2012

Getting To Grips With Bricolage: A Personal Account, Christopher Wibberley

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a personal account of how a PhD supervisor came to an understanding of an approach to research that was unfamiliar to him. Additionally it addresses the question of what makes the approach, in this case bricolage, an acceptable format for academic work and in particular PhD study. Bricolage is a relatively little used approach to research; therefore, researchers utilizing bricolage as a research design have less exemplary texts to draw on in coming to their own understanding of this approach to research. This paper presents an account of getting to grips with bricolage as a way of …

Color Measurement On Substrates With Optical Brightening Agents, Howard E. Vogl, Malcolm G. Keif Jun 2012

Color Measurement On Substrates With Optical Brightening Agents, Howard E. Vogl, Malcolm G. Keif

Graphic Communication

Yellow and blue Pantone colors were printed on a substrate with high Optical Brightening Agent (OBA) levels and then measured under different measurement conditions as outlined in ISO 13655. Both colors exhibited large DEOO shifts with lighter screen tints, as more paper influenced the measurement. The Pantone colors were further analysed after being printed on two different substrates with varying OBAs. While the solids were color-matched to a DEOO of less than 1.0, the tints resulted in DEOO values above 7.0 due to more paper influence in the lighter screen tints.

Correlation Between Facebook Usage And Loneliness And Depression, Jasmine (Chi Man) Tang, Michael Livingston Jun 2012

Correlation Between Facebook Usage And Loneliness And Depression, Jasmine (Chi Man) Tang, Michael Livingston

Psychology Faculty Publications

Facebook has emerged into our society within the last couple years as a powerful social phenomenon. 11.5% of the world population are active users of Facebook while there is a serious lack of psychological theory relating to functions or effects of Facebook. Researchers began realizing the importance of investigating the usage of Facebook and how that might be related to different personality traits. However, not much research has been done on how Facebook use could be related to our social well-beings.

The current study aims to investigate how the use of Facebook influences loneliness and depression. The results showed that …

Positive Effects Of Rewards And Performance Standards On Intrinsic Motivation, W. David Pierce, Judy Cameron, Katherine M. Banko, Sylvia So

The Psychological Record

The present study examined how rewards affect people's intrinsic motivation when the rewards are tied to meeting increasingly demanding performance standards. The experiment was a 2 x 2 factorial design with 2 levels of performance standard (constant, progressive) and 2 levels of reward (reward, no reward). Using a puzzle-solving task, 60 undergraduate university students were randomly assigned to the experimental conditions. In the constant conditions, participants were required to solve 3 puzzle problems on each of 3 trials; in the progressive conditions, participants were asked to solve 1, 3, and 5 problems over the trials. Half the participants were offered …
