Assessment Of Surface Water Quality Parameters And Their Variations For Effective River Monitoring System: A Case Study Of U-Tapao River Basin, Saroj Gyawali, Kuaanan Techato, Chumpol Yuangyai, Sathaporn Monprapussorn

Applied Environmental Research

Water pollution has become an alarming threat to human society and natural ecosystems. Evaluation of water quality and its variations is essential for water quality management. This study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal variations of water quality parameters and their interrelationship to support the current water quality monitoring system of U-tapao river. The data of physico-chemical and biological parameters namely: temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, suspended solid, turbidity, biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and fecal coliform bacteria were collected from twenty-one monitoring stations of the basin from year 2004 to 2011. Analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and principal …

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski Jul 2012

A Study Of Failures In The Us Banking Industry, Joseph Trendowski

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation studies failures in the U.S. banking industry following the 2008 financial crisis. The dissertation offers an exhaustive review of the organizational failure literature, and changes in the banking industry environment over the past century. It takes three theoretical perspectives - institutional, industrial organization and resource-based view- to analyze failures in the banking industry.

The review and analysis allows me to trace the roots of recent bank failures to external (institutional, competitive) and internal (resource structure, strategy, risk) factors, and propose several hypotheses linking such factors with failures. The hypotheses are tested using a data-set that included all bank …

What Is A Solution To A Matrix Game, Martin Shubik Jul 2012

What Is A Solution To A Matrix Game, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

These notes are provided to describe many of the problems encountered concerning both structure and behavior in specifying what is meant by the solution to a game of strategy in matrix or strategic form. In the short term in particular, it is often reasonable for the individual to accept as given, both the context in which decisions are being made and the formal structure of the rules of the game. A solution is usually considered as a complete set of equations of motion that when applied to the game at hand selects a final outcome. There are many different theories …

“Green” Technology And Ecologically Unequal Exchange: The Environmental And Social Consequences Of Ecological Modernization In The World-System, Eric Bonds

History and American Studies Articles

This paper contributes to understandings of ecologically unequal exchange within the world-systems perspective by offering a series of case studies of ecological modernization in the automobile industry. The case studies demonstrate that “green” technologies developed and instituted in core nations often require specific raw materials that are extracted from the periphery and semi-periphery. Extraction of such natural resources causes significant environmental degradation and often displaces entire communities from their land. Moreover, because states often use violence and repression to facilitate raw material extraction, the widespread commercialization of “green” technologies can result in serious human rights violations. These findings challenge ecological …

Notes On Computational Complexity Of Ge Inequalities, Donald J. Brown Jul 2012

Notes On Computational Complexity Of Ge Inequalities, Donald J. Brown

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper is a revision of my paper, CFDP 1865. The principal innovation is an equivalent reformulation of the decision problem for weak feasibility of the GE inequalities, using polynomial time ellipsoid methods, as a semidefinite optimization problem, using polynomial time interior point methods. We minimize the maximum of the Euclidean distances between the aggregate endowment and the Minkowski sum of the sets of consumer’s Marshallian demands in each observation. We show that this is an instance of the generic semidefinite optimization problem: inf x in K f ( x ) ≡ Opt ( K,f ), the optimal value of …

The Anatomy Of French Production Hierarchies, Lorenzo Caliendo, Ferdinando Monte, Esteban Rossi-Hansberg Jul 2012

The Anatomy Of French Production Hierarchies, Lorenzo Caliendo, Ferdinando Monte, Esteban Rossi-Hansberg

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We use a comprehensive dataset of French manufacturing firms to study their internal organization. We first divide the employees of each firm into ‘layers’ using occupational categories. Layers are hierarchical in that the typical worker in a higher layer earns more, and the typical firm occupies less of them. In addition, the probability of adding (dropping) a layer is very positively (negatively) correlated with value added. We then explore the changes in the wages and number of employees that accompany expansions in layers, output, or markets (by becoming exporters). The empirical results indicate that reorganization, through changes in layers, is …

Decoupling Markets And Individuals: Rational Expectations Equilibrium Outcomes From Information Dissemination Among Boundedly-Rational Traders, Karim Jamal, Michael Maier, Shyam Sunder Jul 2012

Decoupling Markets And Individuals: Rational Expectations Equilibrium Outcomes From Information Dissemination Among Boundedly-Rational Traders, Karim Jamal, Michael Maier, Shyam Sunder

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Attainment of rational expectations equilibria in asset markets calls for the price system to disseminate traders’ private information to others. It is known that markets populated by asymmetrically-informed profit-motivated human traders can converge to rational expectations equilibria. This paper reports comparable market outcomes when human traders are replaced by boundedly-rational algorithmic agents who use a simple means-end heuristic. These algorithmic agents lack the capability to optimize; yet outcomes of markets populated by them converge near the equilibrium derived from optimization assumptions. These findings suggest that market structure is an important determinant of efficient aggregate level outcomes, and that care is …

Racial Microaggressions And The Filipino American Experience: Recommendations For Counseling And Development, Kevin L. Nadal, Kara M. Vigilia Escobar, Gail T. Prado, Ejr David, Kristal Haynes

Publications and Research

Racial microaggressions are subtle forms of verbal and behavioral discrimination toward people of color. The current qualitative study explores the experiences of Filipino American participants (N = 12), who described 13 categories of microaggressions, including being treated as an alien in one’s own land or as a 2nd-class citizen, being presumed to have inferior status or intellect, being assumed to uphold Filipino stereotypes, or being mistaken for another identity. Recommendations for counseling and development are discussed.

Attitudes Toward And Behavioral Intentions To Adopt Mobile Marketing: Comparisons Of Gen Y In The United States, France And China, Rebecca Wells, Catherine E. Kleshinski, Terence Lau

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

The rapid global diffusion of mobile marketing makes it increasingly important to understand cross-‐cultural consumer attitudes and behavioral intentions toward mobile marketing as a promotional channel. By building on the previously published research of Altuna and Konuk (2009), this work investigates the attitudes and behavioral intentions toward mobile marketing of Generation Y consumers in the United States, France, and China. Based on this analysis, Chinese Gen Y have the most positive attitude toward mobile marketing, and their overall attitude is significantly more positive than the attitudes of French and American Gen Y groups. While American Gen Y's behavioral intentions are …

Coffee And The Countryside: Small Farmers And Sustainable Development In Las Segovias De Nicaragua, Patrick W. Staib Jul 2012

Coffee And The Countryside: Small Farmers And Sustainable Development In Las Segovias De Nicaragua, Patrick W. Staib

Anthropology ETDs

Las Segovias de Nicaragua is a highland tropical region along the Río Coco and the Honduran border in the northern part of the country. Over the past decade and a half, efforts to introduce and establish organic coffee production methods and cooperative organization models have focused on the impoverished rural inhabitants of this region. This approach represents a significant shift in international development policies toward Third World producer nations. I engaged in this context to question the viability of organic coffee farming given the legacy of deceit, violence, and natural disasters that have plagued this region since the Spanish Conquest. …

Investigating Epistemological Implications Of Geospatial Representation In The Making Of Histories Of The Pueblos, Using An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach, Judith Van Der Elst Jul 2012

Investigating Epistemological Implications Of Geospatial Representation In The Making Of Histories Of The Pueblos, Using An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach, Judith Van Der Elst

Anthropology ETDs

The claim that epistemological differences between western science and indigenous research methodologies are the roots of contention of the interpretation and construction of histories is investigated. An exploratory mixed methods approach is employed to test whether current systems of geospatial analysis and representation are suitable for understanding different ways of knowing, focused on the spatial domain as a fundamental cognitive domain. Recent studies indicate that spatial cognition is significantly different among speakers of different language groups and that spatial ontology is not universal across the human population, providing the theoretical underpinning for questioning the organizational principles of currently used systems …

Standardization Of Questions In Rare Disease Registries: The Prism Library Project, Rachel L. Richesson, Denise Shereff, James E. Andrews Jul 2012

Standardization Of Questions In Rare Disease Registries: The Prism Library Project, Rachel L. Richesson, Denise Shereff, James E. Andrews

School of Information Faculty Publications

Background: Patient registries are often a helpful first step in estimating the impact and understanding the etiology of rare diseases - both requisites for the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics. The value and utility of patient registries rely on the use of both well-constructed structured research questions and relevant answer sets accompanying them. There are currently no clear standards or specifications for developing registry questions, and there are no banks of existing questions to support registry developers.

Objective: This paper introduces the [Rare Disease] PRISM (Patient Registry Item Specifications and Metadata for Rare Disease) project, a library of standardized …
