The Eating Attitudes Test And Healthy Eating : An Investigation Of The Relationships Between Pathological Eating, Healthy Eating, And Normal Dieting, Katherine E. Belon Jul 2012

The Eating Attitudes Test And Healthy Eating : An Investigation Of The Relationships Between Pathological Eating, Healthy Eating, And Normal Dieting, Katherine E. Belon

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT), a measure originally designed to measure pathological eating in the 1970s, is related to healthy eating and/or normal dieting today. This study included the EAT, a measure of healthy/unhealthy eating, a measure of normal dieting, a measure of pathological eating, and a demographics form. These questionnaires were administered to 206 undergraduate women. Results indicated that most factors on the EAT are highly correlated with normal dieting and several factors are correlated with healthy eating. It may be that researchers have been questioning the validity of the …

The Mediating Influence Of Child Self-Regulation On The Relationship Between Couple Attachment Security In Parents And Anxiety In Their Children, David P. Adamusko Jul 2012

The Mediating Influence Of Child Self-Regulation On The Relationship Between Couple Attachment Security In Parents And Anxiety In Their Children, David P. Adamusko

Theses and Dissertations

This two wave panel study examined child self-regulation as a potential mediator of the relationship between marital attachment security in parents and anxiety in their adolescent child. Data for this study were taken from the two parent families in waves three and four of the Flourishing Families project which included 335 two-parent families with children between the ages of 14 and 16. Both parents and child completed the Novak and Clayton (2001) Self-regulation Scale with the child's self-regulation as the target, and both husbands and wives completed a modified version of the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire (Fraley, Waller, & …

To Use Or Not To Use: The Role Of Affect And Cognition In Changing Attitudes Toward Using Condoms Among African American Women, Kristina Hood Jul 2012

To Use Or Not To Use: The Role Of Affect And Cognition In Changing Attitudes Toward Using Condoms Among African American Women, Kristina Hood

Theses and Dissertations

The current project involved three studies designed to examine which characteristics of persuasive communications change condom use attitudes. Study 1 investigated the effect of message type (affective versus cognitive) and source (male versus female) on attitude change among a sample of African American women attending college. In Study 1 (N = 146), the affective message and female source produced the most positive change in condom use attitudes. Study 2 examined whether message type and source were associated with favorable condom attitudes in a community sample and whether these findings differed from a college sample. Twenty-seven women participated in group discussions …

The Walls Are Closing In: Comparing Property Crime Victimization Risk In Gated And Non-Gated Communities, Nicholas Branic Jul 2012

The Walls Are Closing In: Comparing Property Crime Victimization Risk In Gated And Non-Gated Communities, Nicholas Branic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, a growing proportion of the population has moved into gated communities in response to an increasingly pandemic fear of crime. While a sizable body of research has addressed fear of crime and perceived safety in gated communities, few studies have investigated actual rates of victimization. The studies that do compare victimization in gated and non-gated communities tend to be localized assessments and present mixed findings on the effectiveness of community gating as a form of protection from crime.

The present study utilizes a cross-section of National Crime Victimization Survey data to investigate the micro-level effects of living …

The Evolution Of Conservative Attitudes As A Complement To Cognitive Threat Detection Mechanisms, Russ Clay Jul 2012

The Evolution Of Conservative Attitudes As A Complement To Cognitive Threat Detection Mechanisms, Russ Clay

Theses and Dissertations

Conservatism reflects a general attitude structure characterized by a preference for traditional social practices and an aversion to uncertainty and threat. Though the social environment undoubtedly plays a role in shaping conservative attitudes, recent studies suggest that trait-level characteristics may contribute to their development as well. The present research investigated trait-level cognitive threat detection ability as a factor which may influence the development and maintenance of conservative social attitudes. A computer simulation indicated that socially conservative attitudes may function as a strategy for increasing the survival rate of an individual with poor threat detection ability living in a relatively dangerous …

Work And Career Experiences Of Men From Families Without College Experience, Marianne Woodside, Melinda M. Gibbons, John Davidson, Christine Hannon, Jeffrey R. Sweeney Jul 2012

Work And Career Experiences Of Men From Families Without College Experience, Marianne Woodside, Melinda M. Gibbons, John Davidson, Christine Hannon, Jeffrey R. Sweeney

The Qualitative Report

A dearth of research exists exploring the career and work development of adult men and the influence of family-of-origin on that development. In this qualitative study, the researchers used a phenomenological approach to examine the career and work experiences of men whose parents have no education beyond high school and the influences of family on these experiences. We describe five constituents: (a) what work is like; (b) preparation/education; (c) who or what influenced them; (d) how to act at work; and (e) challenges/opportunities/choices; and one essence: mottos from father, which articulate the meaning of the experience of work and career …

Interpretive And Critical Phenomenological Crime Studies: A Model Design, Karen Miner-Romanoff Jul 2012

Interpretive And Critical Phenomenological Crime Studies: A Model Design, Karen Miner-Romanoff

The Qualitative Report

The critical and interpretive phenomenological approach is underutilized in the study of crime. This commentary describes this approach, guided by the question, “Why are interpretive phenomenological methods appropriate for qualitative research in criminology?” Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to describe a model of the interpretive phenomenological approach, illustrating its effectiveness in qualitative studies of criminology. The discussion illustrates the components of interpretive phenomenology approach and procedures of data analysis. These methods provide experiential data that highlight the effects of incarceration of juveniles as adults. Data can influence policymakers to reconsider criminal penalties for juveniles and toward enactment of …

Lope De Aguirre, The Tyrant, And The Prince: Convergence And Divergence In Postcolonial Collective Memory, Jennifer Kate Estava Davis Jul 2012

Lope De Aguirre, The Tyrant, And The Prince: Convergence And Divergence In Postcolonial Collective Memory, Jennifer Kate Estava Davis

Research Collection Centre for English Communication

In Latin America, collective remembering is shaped by stories of colonizers whose voracious ambitions left an indelible mark on the landscape and its people. This essay examines a set of narratives about a legendary colonizer, Lope de Aguirre, that continue to be invoked in the collective imagination on the island of Margarita, in Venezuela. Drawing on Bormann’s Symbolic Convergence Theory and Bakhtin’s work on cultural discourse, this analysis shows that on the one hand, the narratives converge to support official records of Aguirre as an archetype of colonial brutality. Yet on the other, alternate versions of the stories reveal a …

Archeological Site Assesments And Survey At Aquilla Lake, Hill County, Texas, Aaron R. Norment, Karl W. Kibler, Amy E. Dase

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted archeological site assessments and survey at Aquilla Lake from November to December 2010 in preparation for a pool raise planned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District. The proposed pool raise could potentially raise the conservation pool level of the lake by 6.5 ft. Field investigations revisited and reevaluated 41 previously recorded sites and surveyed 10 previously unsurveyed areas (180 total acres) within the confines of the proposed 6.5-ft conservation pool raise. The investigations consolidated 8 of the 41 previously recorded sites into 3, therefore reassessments are given for 36 …

Near-Real-Time Global Biomass Burning Emissions Product From Geostationary Satellite Constellation, Xiaoyang Zhang, Shobha Kondragunta, Jessica Ram, Christopher Schmidt, Ho-Chung Huang

GSCE Faculty Publications

Near-real-time estimates of biomass burning emissions are crucial for air quality monitoring and forecasting. We present here the first near-real-time global biomass burning emission product from geostationary satellites (GBBEP-Geo) produced from satellite-derived fire radiative power (FRP) for individual fire pixels. Specifically, the FRP is retrieved using WF_ABBA V65 (wildfire automated biomass burning algorithm) from a network of multiple geostationary satellites. The network consists of two Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) which are operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Meteosat second-generation satellites (Meteosat-09) operated by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites, and the Multifunctional Transport …

'It’S Research Made Easier!': Sms And Chat Reference Perceptions, Margie Ruppel, Amy Vecchione

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

The convergence of college students' information needs, social characteristics, and technological skills have always defined academic library services. Academic libraries re-shape and expand library services in order to match college students with their preferred mode of communication at their point-of-need. This is especially evident in the current offerings of multiple mediums for research help and mobile-friendly web sites. As Rettig pointed out in 2003, college students' familiarity and confidence with information technology has created expectations of immediacy, interactivity, personalization, and mobility.

Chat reference and text messaging reference services present efficient, personalized methods for connecting with college students. Text messaging, also …
