Reliability And Validity Of The Outcome Questionnaire In A Heterogeneous Cancer Population, Laura Testerman
Reliability And Validity Of The Outcome Questionnaire In A Heterogeneous Cancer Population, Laura Testerman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Cancer Comprehensive Network (NCCN) now require integration of psychosocial care into the treatment of cancer patients to identify, monitor, and treat psychosocial distress. Despite the widespread use of Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) for these purposes, no gold standard PRO for assessing distress exists for psycho-oncology research and clinical practice. This study examined the reliability, validity, and preliminary treatment effects of the Outcome Questionnaire, a PRO never before been used or validated with heterogeneous cancer patients. Adult cancer survivors were recruited nationwide to participate in an online support group (N=187) and randomly assigned to …
Dual Physician Couples: An Exploration Of Family Stressors And Coping, A. Benjamin Zinke
Dual Physician Couples: An Exploration Of Family Stressors And Coping, A. Benjamin Zinke
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Physician families have experienced significant changes in the last half century as the rise of female physicians has resulted in an increase in the number of dual physician couples. The present research is a qualitative study of dual physician couples (N = 32). A social exchange framework is used to conceptualize the costs and rewards that dual physician couples experience with regards to work and family domains. A constructivist grounded theory was used as a theory of methodology so that findings were grounded in the data. Results of this study showed that couples tended to struggle for what was important …

Studying Community Vitality & Revitalization: Synthesizing Case Study Research For Practical Application, Jennifer Curtis, Mariah Cunningham
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to advance our ability to assess efforts by municipalities to revitalize their downtowns and improve the community amenities and opportunities that constitute livability, which is a main factor in establishing community vitality. In order to-do this we will build upon the work of two previous capstone teams looking at community vitality and revitalization by working with the case studies of the previous teams to determine key indicators, identify missing indicators, and assess the validity and reliability of indicators for future case study use. This work represents the third phase of a larger project initiated …

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to give a voice to Maine’s incarcerated women and potentially influence the ongoing policy revision process in Maine. The researcher conducted 3 focus groups with 18 residents of the Women’s Center- a gender-responsive facility that houses about 70 to 80 incarcerated women at the Maine Correctional Facility in Windham, ME. The perspectives of the participants varied, however, the findings of the study were largely in line with the literature guidelines for gender-responsive policies and practices.
The Ratio Of Positive To Negative Affect, Flourishing, And Health Behavior, Michael Stuart Leibow
The Ratio Of Positive To Negative Affect, Flourishing, And Health Behavior, Michael Stuart Leibow
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The ratio between positive and negative affect, known as the positivity ratio (PR) is thought to be associated with flourishing (psychological and social well-being). However, little research has been done on how PR and flourishing relate to specific health behaviors. The relationships between PR and flourishing with health behavior i.e., physical activity, and diet (fruit, leafy green vegetables [LGV] and meat intake) were investigated in this study. We examined whether PR mediated the relationship between flourishing and health behaviors, and whether flourishing mediated the relationship between PR and these behaviors. Gender and ethnic differences for the above associations were examined …

College Football Twitter Communities: The Husker Twitter Community During The 2012 Capital One Bowl, Kelly D. Mosier
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
Our increasingly interconnected society has allowed total strangers to share insights in real time with increasing frequency and ease through the use of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google Plus. Twitter, a social network based on the cell phone short messaging system, has previously shown an ability to aid in the sharing of information during major events such as presidential debates and breaking news.
Sporting events are also places where large groups of people share a similar experience. Traditionally, information has flowed to average viewers, through professional journalists. Due to social networking sites like Twitter, fans now …
Faith As News: A Christian Clergy Perspective On News Media Coverage Of Religion, John Baker
Faith As News: A Christian Clergy Perspective On News Media Coverage Of Religion, John Baker
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
Religion and the news media have had a long, contentious relationship. While the roots of American journalism lie in the particular theology and practices of Puritan New England, journalism’s clashes with authority, including the religious establishment, set it on its course to independence.
While the general public sees the news media as largely neutral toward religion, a significant segment of evangelical Christians see the news media as “unfriendly” toward them. This thesis suggests that group identification, as well as conservative political orientation, are prime factors shaping this perception of the new media.

"It Was Awful, But It Was Politics": Crittenden County And The Demise Of African American Political Participation, Krista Michelle Jones
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the vast scholarship that exists discussing why Democrats sought restrictive suffrage laws, little attention has been given by historians to examine how concern over local government drove disfranchisement measures. This study examines how the authors of disfranchisement laws were influenced by what was happening in Crittenden County where African Americans, because of their numerical majority, wielded enough political power to determine election outcomes. In the years following the Civil War, African Americans established strong communities, educated themselves, secured independent institutions, and most importantly became active in politics. Because of their numerical majority, Crittenden's African Americans were elected to county …

Numeric Estimation And Response Options: An Examination Of The Measurement Properties Of Numeric And Vague Quantifier Responses, Mohammad T. Al Baghal
Numeric Estimation And Response Options: An Examination Of The Measurement Properties Of Numeric And Vague Quantifier Responses, Mohammad T. Al Baghal
Survey Research and Methodology Program: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Many survey questions ask respondents to provide responses that contain quantitative information. These questions are often asked requiring open ended numeric responses, while others have been asked using vague quantifier scales. How these questions are asked, particularly in terms of the response format, can have an important impact on the data. Therefore, the response format is of particular importance for ensuring that any use of the data contains the best possible information. Generally, survey researchers have argued against the use of vague quantifier scales. This dissertation compares various measurement properties between numeric open ended and vague quantifier responses, using three …
Risk Management Strategies For Nebraska Grain And Oilseed Producers: A Stochastic Simulation And Analysis, Jim A. Jansen
Risk Management Strategies For Nebraska Grain And Oilseed Producers: A Stochastic Simulation And Analysis, Jim A. Jansen
Department of Agricultural Economics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Uncertainty in revenue for grain and oilseed operations located across Nebraska exists due to commodity price volatility and yield variability. Several risk management tools enable producers to deal with financial losses from revenue declines including crop insurance, marketing strategies, and government farm programs. Producers may need to combine multiple tools for an effective risk management strategy, but research lacks on integrating these tools currently available to producers across the state. Actions amongst individuals actively engaged in the industry show their plans to deal with revenue declines may lead to less than optimal strategies.
Stochastic simulation utilizing eight representative farms across …

Authentic Leadership, Leader–Member Exchange, And Organizational Citizenship Behavior: A Multilevel Analysis, Heather M. Stewart Wherry
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This field study examined the relationship between leaders’ authentic leadership (as rated by leader and follower) and five constructs of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) (altruism, civic virtue, conscientiousness, courtesy, and sportsmanship) as moderated by leader-member exchange.
Data were collected from 32 leader participants and 243 raters from seven for-profit organizations in the Midwest. A multilevel data analysis was conducted using Hierarchical Linear Modeling. Three of the five OCB constructs (conscientiousness, courtesy, and civic virtue) were analyzed as multi-level. Altruism and sportsmanship were analyzed using regression.
First, the direct effect of the leader’s level of authentic leadership was tested on each …
The Price Of Dissent: Freedom Of Speech And Arkansas Criminal Anarchy Arrests, Jamie Leto Kern
The Price Of Dissent: Freedom Of Speech And Arkansas Criminal Anarchy Arrests, Jamie Leto Kern
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Following World War I and the Bolshevik Revolutions, America's Red Scare began, inciting fanatical patriotism and an alleged threat of anarchy that gripped a nation with fear. Paranoia about communists, Socialists, and anarchists divided the country and resulted in many states, including Arkansas, passing criminal anarchy laws. Since a majority of those accused of anti-American activities were involved in labor disputes, Arkansas makes for an interesting case study; not only did it have a relative lack of labor disputes, it still passed anti-Bolshevik laws. The purpose of this research is to develop an understanding of the ways in which dissenters …

Communication And Female Date Initiation: Differences In Perception Based On Sex Of Initiator, Lindsey Kay Odom
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
First dates represent an important early event in the development of dating relationships. Commonly, date initiation is a behavior in which men take control; however, more women are attempting this task. Women initiating dates is a deviation from cultural norms or what society views as expected behavior. The deviation in behavior could have negative repercussions for women, which was investigated for the current study. College-aged participants (n = 232) completed an online survey regarding their perceptions of two hypothetical women who initiated dates. Informed by Expectancy Violations Theory, the expectedness and valence of the date-initiation behavior and mode of follow-up …

A Systematic Review Of Psychological Treatments For Combat-Related Ptsd, Benson G. Munyan Iii
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
With ongoing military operations spanning the globe, a new population of combat veterans is emerging. Posttraumatic stress disorder is an enormous issue for veterans, and knowing the status of psychosocial treatments for it seems necessary. The current study seeks to provide a more comprehensive description of the current status of outcome research for combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder, including treatments being utilized, attrition rates, percent responders/nonresponder, and population conflict (i.e., OIF, OEF, Vietnam). The literature was systematically reviewed and 10 randomized controlled trials were identified that focused solely on veteran populations with posttraumatic stress disorder. Treatments utilized in these studies included …
Implications Of Self-Other Overlap In Unsuccessful Romantic Relationships, Josephine A. Bell
Implications Of Self-Other Overlap In Unsuccessful Romantic Relationships, Josephine A. Bell
Graduate Masters Theses
The social psychological concept of self-other overlap describes how identities and cognitive representations of people have a tendency to merge as they become closer to one another. Because greater self-other overlap tends to be associated with such positive characteristics as closeness and intimacy, it has generally been considered a desirable trait in relationships. In a previous study (Bell, 2009), preliminary evidence supported the idea that there may in fact be negative consequences to having higher levels of self-other overlap in relationships with domestic violence, including diminished self-esteem and life satisfaction. The current study expands on Bell (2009) study and examines …

Measuring College Students’ Motives Behind Prepartying Drinking: Development And Validation Of The Prepartying Motivations Inventory, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Eric R. Pedersen, Andrew Lac, Taona Chithambo
Heads Up!
Drinking motives are vital in identifying risk factors and better understanding alcohol-related outcomes. However, context-specific motivations could provide greater motivational perspective on high-risk context-specific alcohol use behaviors such as prepartying (consuming alcohol prior to attending one’s intended destination) than general alcohol motivations. In the current study, students’ open-ended responses to reasons for prepartying were collected from a large diverse sample (n = 2497), and the most commonly offered reasons were used to create a prepartying motivations inventory (PMI) that was then administered to a different sample (n = 1085). A split-half validation procedure was used for the purpose …

Daniel Hannan, Thomas Paine, And The Rhetoric Of Outrage, Danae Brack
Masters Theses
The purpose of this rhetorical study is to examine the textual charisma of Thomas Paine's Common Sense and Daniel Hannan's speech "The Devalued Prime Minister of a Devalued Government" and how that charisma made these artifacts successful in spreading outrage surrounding the historical and political events of their respective eras. The author uses Weber's theory of charisma filtered through Rosenberg and Hirschberg's expanded theory identifying lexical charisma, or the charisma of messages. The author analyzes Paine's and Hannan's use of persuasiveness, believability, and powerfulness, translating each of these characteristics into specific cues that can be identified in the individual texts. …

Creating A Millennial Generation Contextualized Church Culture, Christopher Deitsch
Masters Theses
The Millennial generation, or Generation Y as some people know them, is the biggest generation in the United States of America history. As they flood schools, universities, and the job market it is easy to see that there are major differences between them and previous generations. Simultaneously, the church in America has hundreds of individual churches each year closing and tens of thousands each year declining; most churches are ceasing to grow. The inability to reach Millennials is one of the reasons for this decline. This thesis purposes to give a snapshot of the Millennial generation, overview a few of …

Development Of A Scale To Measure Local Residents' Perceived Social Impacts Of Hosting Large-Scale Sport Events, Wonyoung Kim
Development Of A Scale To Measure Local Residents' Perceived Social Impacts Of Hosting Large-Scale Sport Events, Wonyoung Kim
Dissertations
Existing studies have indicated that local residents‟ perceptions on both positive and negative social impacts toward hosting large-scale sport events have played as a key role for developing successful sport events based on getting community-wide support and involvement. However, examining local residents‟ perceived social impacts have been limited due to its intangible nature and lack of valid and reliable instrument for the adequate measurement. The purpose of this study was to explore a conceptual framework of social impacts and develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure local residents‟ perceived social impacts of hosting large-scale sport events. A preliminary questionnaire …
