Automatic Classification Of Software Related Microblogs, Philips Kokoh Prasetyo, David Lo, Achananuparp Palakorn, Yuan Tian, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Millions of people, including those in the software engineering communities have turned to microblogging services, such as Twitter, as a means to quickly disseminate information. A number of past studies by Treude et al., Storey, and Yuan et al. have shown that a wealth of interesting information is stored in these microblogs. However, microblogs also contain a large amount of noisy content that are less relevant to software developers in engineering software systems. In this work, we perform a preliminary study to investigate the feasibility of automatic classification of microblogs into two categories: relevant and irrelevant to engineering software systems. …

Homeless Encampments On Public Right-Of-Way: A Planning And Best Practices Guide, Ellen M. Bassett, Andrée Tremoulet, Allison Moe
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Homelessness is a societal problem. Its causes are complex, and its effects have implications for many public agencies, including those not directly responsible for providing assistance to homeless individuals. Because homeless people constantly seek safe shelter and refuges, agencies that own public land and buildings sometimes find themselves in contact with this population. Nationally, the impact of homelessness appears to represent a substantial operational challenge for state transportation agencies and Departments of Transportation (DOTs). Two online surveys?one of state DOT managers and supervisors and the other of public sector managers of highway rest areas (DOT and other state agency staff)?conducted …
Up From Under The “Open Access” Bus, Paul Royster
Up From Under The “Open Access” Bus, Paul Royster
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
For most of the past seven years I had thought I was working to promote open access to academic scholarship and creative works. I helped place more than 40,000 articles and documents in a freely accessible repository, from which they could be (and were) browsed, downloaded, saved, printed, and linked to.
But I find now that these efforts failed to meet the standards of the open access advocates as represented by (among others) SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, a library membership organization formed and sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries. As was made excruciatingly clear at …

Women’S Political Leadership In Massachusetts, Paige Ransford, Meryl Thomson, Sarah Healey
Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
The Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy (CWPPP) at UMass Boston’s McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies has been tracking the election of women at the municipal level in Massachusetts since 1996. In 2003, the Project expanded to include all New England states. CWPPP remains the only research center in the United States that regularly tracks women’s political representation at the local level.
Adult-Directed And Peer-Directed Respect For Authority: Relationships With Aggressive And Manipulative Behavior, Katherine H. Clemans, Julia A. Graber, Amie F. Bettencourt
Adult-Directed And Peer-Directed Respect For Authority: Relationships With Aggressive And Manipulative Behavior, Katherine H. Clemans, Julia A. Graber, Amie F. Bettencourt
Psychology: Faculty Publications
This study investigated whether respect for adult and peer authority are separate attitudes which have distinct relationships with aggressive and manipulative behavior. Items assessing admiration for and obedience toward parents, teachers, popular students, and friend group leaders were administered to 286 middle school students (M age = 12.6 years). Factor analysis revealed two primary factors which corresponded to adult-directed and peer-directed respect orientations. Results suggested that adult-directed respect was associated with lower levels of aggression and social manipulation, whereas peer-directed respect was associated with higher levels of these behaviors. The role of peer-directed respect as a risk factor for negative …
The Policy Czar Debate, Justin Vaughn, José Villalobos
The Policy Czar Debate, Justin Vaughn, José Villalobos
Departmental Papers (PS)
Presidential policy czars have been an important and powerful component of President Barack Obama’s approach to management and leadership in the first part of his time in office. By using czars, the President has been able to demonstrate the importance of policy issues, both to his own agenda and to the broader political system. In this chapter, we find that performance outcomes for these czars have been a mixed bag, with as many stories of success to report as tales of frustration and failure. As such, we posit that the cost of czars, in political and organizational terms, has outweighed …
Leverage And Default In Binomial Economies: A Complete Characterization, Ana Fostel, John Geanakoplos
Leverage And Default In Binomial Economies: A Complete Characterization, Ana Fostel, John Geanakoplos
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Our paper provides a complete characterization of leverage and default in binomial economies with financial assets serving as collateral. First, our Binomial No-Default Theorem states that any equilibrium is equivalent (in real allocations and prices) to another equilibrium in which there is no default. Thus actual default is irrelevant, though the potential for default drives the equilibrium and limits borrowing. This result is valid with arbitrary preferences and endowments, arbitrary promises, many assets and consumption goods, production, and multiple periods. We also show that the no-default equilibrium would be selected if there were the slightest cost of using collateral or …
Decoding Nonverbal Expressions Of Emotion Of Men And Women, Spencer Mac Adams
Decoding Nonverbal Expressions Of Emotion Of Men And Women, Spencer Mac Adams
Modern Psychological Studies
In this experiment participants viewed 42 images of 7 different facial expressions and asked to identify the emotion associated with the expression. Participants were separated into a control group and an experimental group. Participants in the control group were shown 21 male and 21 female expressions of the following: Anger, Sadness, Happiness, Fear, Disgust, Surprise, and a Neutral expression; each presented 3 times. The experimental group was given the same procedure with the addition of phrases that accompanied the images that were either: congruent, incongruent, or unrelated to the expression. Accurately decoding the expression was measured and factors of significance …
Rate And Frequency Of Demands On Children With Autism, Colton Cassanelli, Timothy Piskura, Valerie Smith
Rate And Frequency Of Demands On Children With Autism, Colton Cassanelli, Timothy Piskura, Valerie Smith
Modern Psychological Studies
Applied Behavior Analytic (ABA) intervention seeks to improve deficits in children with autism by providing multiple planned opportunities for learners to develop and practice skills that are useful to them, and are effective alternatives to less acceptable behaviors. Throughout a given day, teachers give instruction to children. While the rate and frequency of these instructions occur in high numbers, there is little literature on just how often they occur. This project sought to find out the frequency of demands in one-hour increments for ten children in a behavior analytic school setting, and to test for differences between male and female …

Participation In A Priming Task Predicts Persistence, Brandi L. Dilgard, Cassandra G. Mosely, Melissa D. Welch, Jessica L. Bates
Modern Psychological Studies
Though previously considered to be a relatively stable factor, emerging research suggests that optimism may be manipulated. Since research suggests a link between optimism and task persistence, the manipulation of optimism may result in greater task persistence. This paper describes two experiments. In both experiments, researchers examined whether participants primed for optimism persisted longer on a difficult anagram-solving task than did participants who were not primed for optimism. Experiment 1 used a future thinking task to prime optimism, whereas Experiment 2 used a scrambled sentences task to prime optimism. Results suggested a trend for participants primed for optimism to persist …

Potential Effects Of The Affordable Care Act On The Award Of Life Care Expenses, Joshua Congdon-Hohman, Victor Matheson
Potential Effects Of The Affordable Care Act On The Award Of Life Care Expenses, Joshua Congdon-Hohman, Victor Matheson
Economics Department Working Papers
Plaintiffs in personal injury lawsuits are entitled to compensation for future medical expenses. We argue that the “guaranteed issue” and “individual mandate” requirements of the recently passed Affordable Care Act (ACA) will allow victims to address their health needs through the purchase of a simple health insurance plan rather than direct compensation for an itemized list of health care needs. As such, damage awards for health expenditures should be capped at a maximum of $5,950 per year. Furthermore, the role of a life care planner should evolve into determining which life care expenses are covered under covered by the minimum …

Forensic Economics, Eric Zitzewitz
Forensic Economics, Eric Zitzewitz
Dartmouth Scholarship
A new meta-field of "forensic economics" has begun to emerge, uncovering evidence of hidden behavior in a variety of domains. Examples include teachers cheating on exams, road builders skimping on materials, violations of U.N. sanctions, unnecessary heart surgeries, and racial biases in employment decisions, traffic stops, auto retailing, and even sports judging. In each case, part of the contribution of economic analysis is in uncovering evidence of wrongdoing. Although research questions differ, forensic economic work shares commonalities in approaches and limitations. This article seeks to draw out the common threads, with the hope of stimulating further research across fields. (JEL …
Graffiti, Poetry, Dance: How Public Library Art Programs Affect Teens Part 1: Introduction & Literature Review, Shannon Crawford Barniskis
Graffiti, Poetry, Dance: How Public Library Art Programs Affect Teens Part 1: Introduction & Literature Review, Shannon Crawford Barniskis
Communication Faculty Publications
This two-part article addresses the outcomes of art programs in public libraries by examining the literature, and by asking teens how these programs can affect their civic engagement. The literature review synthesizes previous research on art, libraries, teens, and civic engagement, and positions this case study in relation to the theoretical constructs of adult researchers.
The case study generates a grounded theory of the teen experience of art programs and its correlating shifts in civic engagement. Fourteen teens joined in six weekly arts programs, responded to surveys, and participated in interviews on art, libraries, various measures of civic engagement, and …

Graffiti, Poetry, Dance: How Public Library Art Programs Affect Teens Part 2: The Research Study And Its Practical Implications, Shannon Crawford Barniskis
Communication Faculty Publications
Part 1 of this article synthesized the literature on civic engagement, art, libraries, and teen services to demonstrate how public libraries can transform the lives of their patrons and the communities they serve. This case study responds to the top-down view of this topic generated by adult researchers by creating a bottom-up, teen-validated grounded theory. In my thirteen years as a teen librarian, it seemed that something special was occurring in the art programs I hosted or observed in public libraries. Teens were not simply creating steampunk sculptures, they were also appeared to be connecting with one another in interesting …

Testing News Trustworthiness In An Online Public Sphere: A Case Study Of The Economist's News Report Covering The Riots In Xinjiang, China, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao
Communication Faculty Publications
This paper explores the news trustworthiness and media credibility of The Economist’s news report on 9 July 2009, and the communicative roles of 846 readers’ responses. Theoretically guided by news translation and cultural resistance and the online public sphere, we applied online field observation and discourse analysis and achieved two main findings: First, although the news report covered the Xinjiang riots with comprehensive and attractive details, it violated the core journalism value of media credibility and journalistic objectivity by providing misleading pictures and significant unreliable and biased coverage. Second, the major communicative roles of the online readers’ responses generally match …

From Plyler V. Doe To Trayvon Martin: Toward Closing The Open Society, Lyle Dennison
Washington and Lee Law Review
Lyle Denniston, the longest serving and most experienced journalist covering the United States Supreme Court, takes his theme of an inclusive and open society from the constitutional and cultural vision of the late Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. and then offers a detailed argument that America is forfeiting—or at least compromising—that vision in favor of a safer, more secure and more cramped society, at home and abroad. The Article, taken from a memorial lecture in Justice Powell’s honor at Washington and Lee University in April 2012, draws upon a variety of very different societal and legal developments that are found …

Does Government Spending Undermine Monetary Policy In Nigeria?, Emmanuel T. Adamgbe, Peter D. Golit, Izuchukwu I. Okafor
Economic and Financial Review
In Nigeria, anecdotal evidence suggest that the fiscal/operations of government, especially disbursements from the Federation Account to the three-tiers of government, had over the years created liquidity challenges requiring aggressive monetary management. Against the background, this paper addresses two questions: (i) Does government spending have significant spill-over effects on inflation in Nigeria? (ii) Does government, spending induce a concomitant response by the CBN? ln addition, unlike the sparse literature in Nigeria on these two issues, which essentially relies on constant parameter model we use of time-varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP-VAR) model with stochastic volatility. Applying this framework allows us not …
