The Service Use Index: A Tool For Examining Rural/Urban Differences, Rosemary K. Chapin Ph.D., Beth Anne Baca Msw, Skye N. Leedahl Ma, Roxanne Rachlin Mhsa, Xanthippe Wedel Bs, Mary K. Zimmerman Phd

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Development of tools for identifying and tracking differences in older adult service utilization by race, ethnicity, income, and geographic area is vital in the face of current demographic and economic changes in rural areas, particularly in areas experiencing rapid demographic changes. In this conceptual article, we explain how to calculate a service use index that compares service utilization of a specific group of older adults to that of the entire older adult population. We then illustrate its usefulness with a case example using geographic information systems (GIS). This unique approach can be utilized to understand differences across fields of practice, …

Life Lived Well: A Description Of Wellness Across The Lifespan Of A Senior Woman, Whitney L. Jarnagin, Marianne Woodside Sep 2012

Life Lived Well: A Description Of Wellness Across The Lifespan Of A Senior Woman, Whitney L. Jarnagin, Marianne Woodside

The Qualitative Report

The concept of wellness provides a positive view of life development that can support psychological support and counseling. There is little in the literature about wellness and seniors, especially women. This study describes one senior woman’s wellness across the life span by addressing two research questions: (a) What are the experiences of one woman’s wellness across the life span as analyzed through the lens of the Indivisible Self (Myers & Sweeney, 2004, 2005) model of wellness; and (b) What experiences does one woman describe related to the model’s second order factors: the Creative Self; the Coping Self; the Social Self; …

Whose Story Is It? An Autoethnography Concerning Narrative Identity, Alec J. Grant, Laetitia Zeeman Sep 2012

Whose Story Is It? An Autoethnography Concerning Narrative Identity, Alec J. Grant, Laetitia Zeeman

The Qualitative Report

This paper is divided into three parts, each separated by centrally spaced asterisks. The first part, co-written on the basis of the standpoint interests of both authors, outlines the historical, philosophical, theoretical and methodological contexts for the use of autoethnographic short stories in the social and human sciences. The functions and representational practices of this genre are reviewed and discussed, and the main criticisms leveled by its detractors responded to. This sets the scene for the second part of the paper, an autoethnographic short story. Effectively a story of stories, it was constructed directly from the first author’s memories of …

A Duoethnography On Duoethnography: More Than A Book Review, Amanda O. Latz, Jennifer L. Murray Sep 2012

A Duoethnography On Duoethnography: More Than A Book Review, Amanda O. Latz, Jennifer L. Murray

The Qualitative Report

Within this duoethnographic book review, we sought to carry out and compose our co-authored review of Norris, Sawyer, and Lund’s (2012) edited text by using the method put forward within its pages. What follows is a duoethnographic book review. Through the processes of jointly reading, note taking, conversing, sharing, and negotiating, we have created a dialogic, multi-vocal, and candid review of this compendium. Throughout our now-public dialogue, readers will gain an understanding of both the book and the method on which it is focused. Completing this review in the fashion we did, we hope, provides readers with the needed information …

Internships And The Making Of Future Lawyers, Seow Hon Tan Sep 2012

Internships And The Making Of Future Lawyers, Seow Hon Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

As law firm internships provide law students with their first substantial encounters with lawyers, in situations where they are especially eager to impress, a project was undertaken to examine the impact of private law firm internships on the professional identities of future lawyers. Fifty-two volunteers from the Singapore Management University, which mandates 10 weeks of internships with approved partners, were surveyed. Most had done corporate or civil litigation work at local firms in Singapore. The findings of this research project were presented at the fifth International Legal Ethics Conference, held in Canada in July.

The Ethics Of Fake Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Sep 2012

The Ethics Of Fake Reference, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A common assignment in introductory reference classes these days requires library school students to ask questions of a virtual reference service—usually not at their own university library—and evaluate their encounter. Often they are instructed to ask a question that might be of genuine interest to them, but there is no way to guarantee that the students even have a question of interest, leading in some cases to students asking random questions of these services. Regardless, such assignments might benefit the instructors and students, but they do so at the expense of librarians. One such interaction led to an ethical analysis …

Reserve Textbooks: To Buy, Or Not To Buy?, Julie Middlemas, Patricia Morrison, Nadra Farina-Hess

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

There is convincing evidence that academic libraries are used less frequently for research than in the past, due to the advent of the Internet. This begs the question: what role does the current library have for students? It can be argued that we simply need to convince students and faculty of library viability, or, another route would be to give students what they are asking for. And textbooks, via course reserves, are what they request most at Grossmont College. Collection development policies typically contain some verbiage that equates to “the library does not collect textbooks, unless they are donated by …

Employment Supports For Newcomers In Small And Middle-Sized Communities Andrural Areas: Perspectives Of Newcomers And Service Providers, Bharati Sethi, Robert Gebotys

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

In recent years there has been an increased migration of highly skilled and educated cohort of men and women from their initial port of entry—large urban centers such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal—to smaller urban/rural communities as a result of regionalization of the Canadian immigration policies. This article examines the employment supports for newcomers in Grand Erie—an urban/rural area in Ontario—which is now a home to an unprecedented number of newcomers. Using a community-based participatory research methodology, data were gathered from 212 newcomers and 237 service providers through quantitative and qualitative responses in the survey questionnaires. Results show that newcomers …

The Public Face Of The 'Litigation State:' Federal Empowerment Of Litigation By State Governments, Paul Nolette Sep 2012

The Public Face Of The 'Litigation State:' Federal Empowerment Of Litigation By State Governments, Paul Nolette

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

Scholars have recently begun exploring the construction of what Sean Farhang has termed the “litigation state” – namely, the distinctly American way in which contemporary federal programs are enforced by means of litigation. The attention in this literature to date has focused on why Congress has encouraged private litigation to enforce various statutory programs. This paper examines the emergence of a related and no less important development – the federal government’s encouragement of state government litigators to help enforce federal regulatory programs, especially state attorneys general ("AGs"). Examining several decades’ worth of congressional actions, court decisions, and federal administrative initiatives …

What Have They Been Thinking? Home Buyer Behavior In Hot And Cold Markets, Karl E. Case, Robert J. Shiller, Anne K. Thompson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Questionnaire surveys we have undertaken in 1988 and annually 2003–2012 of recent homebuyers in each of four U.S. cities shed light on their expectations and reasons for buying and selling during the recent housing boom and subsequent collapse, and on the reasons for the housing crisis that initiated the current financial malaise. We find that homebuyers were generally well informed, and that their short-run expectations if anything underreacted to the year-to-year change in actual home prices. More of the root causes of the bubble can be seen in their long-term, ten-year, home price expectations, which reached abnormal levels relative to …

Defining Terrorism: A Risky Business?, Helena Kiely Sep 2012

Defining Terrorism: A Risky Business?, Helena Kiely

Dissertations

The Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Act 2005 introduced definitions of terrorist activity, terrorist group and terrorist offences for the first time. These definitions, enacted subsequent to the Good Friday Agreement (1998), were examined to ascertain whether perspectives of crime control or risk influenced their formulation. Evidence of control perspectives were elicited within the definitions but themes of risk or actuarial justice were not found. The policy analysis established that the definitions which emerged through process of coerced policy convergence emanating from the Council of the European Union with Irish legislators having limited influence.

Remittances To Transit Countries: The Impact On Sudanese Refugee Livelihoods In Cairo, Karen Jacobson, Maysa Ayoub, Alice Johnson

Faculty Journal Articles

Transit countries are way stations or stopping points in the journey of migrants and refugees from their countries of origin to their intended destination countries. Many migrants and refugees become ‘stuck’, often for years, unable to either move onward or to return to their home countries. They may be blocked by the inability to gather the funds needed for travel, or by hazardous travel conditions or by immigration policy shifts (such as resettlement policy). This study sought to fill gaps in our knowledge about the livelihoods of refugees in the urban centers of transit countries. ‘Stuck’ migrants engage in a …
