Research Brief: "Web-Based Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Education For Military Family Members", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

In this study, researchers introduced an educational website to assess and improve knowledge of PTSD, and also help to engage family members in positive actions to assist service members struggling with PTSD. Web-based content can serve as a valuable method of providing care and information to military service members without the risk of being stigmatized; therefore, policy makers should focus on creating and maintaining structural and financial support for programs that provide military service members, and their families, tools to manage post-deployment issues. Future studies should focus on providing an increased range of services for military families using the educational …

The Semiotic Ecology And Linguistic Complexity Of An Online Game World, Steven L. Thorne, Ingrid Fischer, Xiaofei Lu Sep 2012

The Semiotic Ecology And Linguistic Complexity Of An Online Game World, Steven L. Thorne, Ingrid Fischer, Xiaofei Lu

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multiplayer online games form complex semiotic ecologies that include game-generated texts, player-to-player communication and collaboration, and associated websites that support in-game play. This article describes an exploratory study of the massively multiplayer online game (MMO) World of Warcraft (WoW), with specific attention to its qualities as a setting for second language (L2) use and development. This empirical study seeks to answer the following question: What is the nature of the linguistic ecology that WoW players are exposed to? Many studies have described the developmental opportunities presented by commercially available gaming environments (e.g., Gee, 2003, 2007), their value as sites of …

Nebraska Natural Change By Race/Ethnicity, David Drozd Sep 2012

Nebraska Natural Change By Race/Ethnicity, David Drozd

Past Publications

The natural phenomena of people being born and people passing away occur every day. Demographers call the difference between the number of births and the number of deaths “natural change”. Natural change and the net movement of persons to/from an area are factors that lead its population to change. While our office has analyzed these population change components in total, we can now break them into sub-groups such as by race/ethnicity.

Resolution Enhancement Optimizations For Hyperspectral And Multispectral Synthetic Image Fusion, Charles R. Bostater Sep 2012

Resolution Enhancement Optimizations For Hyperspectral And Multispectral Synthetic Image Fusion, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Many sensor systems are available for sensing the earth surface from satellites as well as airborne and mobile platforms. Thus, fusing data from multiple sensors is becoming a common theme in earth remote sensing. A major goal of remote sensing image fusion is resolution enhancement. In this paper, optimization techniques are presented and discussed in order to help make an image fusion process a practical method for not only spectral signature based image analysis but also for algorithm development in remote sensing of water. The technique described and explored in this paper includes the identification of feature areas, stratified random …

By Popular Demand: Building A Consortial Demand‐Driven Program, Xan Arch, Robin Champieux, Susan Hinken, Emily Mcelroy, Joan Thompson

Charleston Library Conference

The Orbis Cascade Alliance set out to create an e‐book program for its 36 member libraries. Unlike the single-library patron‐driven acquisition programs that we have seen in the past, this ambitious pilot needed to take into account the different discovery options and workflow requirements of 36 libraries and their varying size and technical capabilities. We will discuss the ideal makeup of an implementation team for a program of this size, how to assess the technical hurdles and what training must be provided, how to work with vendors effectively in this setting, and how to evaluate the success of a patron‐driven …

Our users want an easier way to search library resources; currently, there are many discovery tools available, which can seem daunting. How do you know which one will work for your unique library? Librarians from different types of libraries—an online library, a land-grant school, a law library, a private university, and a consortium—describe how they evaluated the available products and made decisions on which tools to implement. A variety of platforms are discussed, including: Ebsco’s Discovery Service, III’s Encore Synergy Discovery, Serials Solutions’ Summon, and even a homegrown solution. Discover what libraries are looking for in these tools, strategies for …

Let Go And Haul! A Square‐Rigger’S Guide To Weeding “Age Of Sail” Collections In The 21st Century, Valarie Prescott Adams, Douglas Black

Charleston Library Conference

This nautically tinged talk explores what happens when two academic libraries begin reshaping their approach to collection evaluation and management by designing programs for large‐scale, systematic collection review. At both libraries, methodical and comprehensive weeding had not taken place for decades, if ever. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga restructured its collection practices by implementing a subject liaison program and creating a carefully phased review process in which discipline faculty were an integral part. Northern Michigan University set out to halve the size of its circulating collection within five years, as part of the library’s response to a campus‐wide strategic …

A First-Year Librarian’S Weeding Project Management Experience From Start To (Planned) Finish, Kady Ferris Sep 2012

A First-Year Librarian’S Weeding Project Management Experience From Start To (Planned) Finish, Kady Ferris

Charleston Library Conference

This paper will provide an adaptable roadmap for weeding a monograph collection at a small academic library. When starting straight out of library school as the first Collection Development Librarian for the St. Edward’s University library in July 2010, I was confronted with a monograph collection that had never been weeded in any systematic way. As a small liberal arts university library, it is not our mission to collect comprehensively but rather to support the current curriculum, which is focused on social issues in a global context. Yet, there we were with a dusty, dated, unused collection filling the shelves. …

2011 Global Student E‐Book Survey, Allen Mckiel

Charleston Library Conference

This article reviews the responses from the second ebrary informal survey of students concerning their experiences with information resources, which was conducted in September and early October of 2011. The first survey concluded in May of 2008. The surveys asked essentially the same questions about student use of electronic and print resources— perceived strengths and weaknesses as well as preferences and attitudes about them. This analysis compares the student responses separated by the three and a half years. Tables 11, 12, 15, and 16 use data constructed from the 2008 survey that were not initially reported so that they could …

The Economic Contribution Of Instream Flows To The Lower Connecticut River Watershed, New England, Usa, Helen M. Poulos, Clement Loo, James G. Workman, Ann De Boer, Julia Michaels

Environmental Studies Publications

River recreation is a rapidly expanding source of economic productivity. Angler spending has been used as the basis for estimating the regional economic estimates of local income and jobs in several water-limited systems of the western United States and Mexico. However, the contribution of outdoor recreation to the economies of regions that do not experience water scarcity continues to be underappreciated. This paper estimates the economic contribution of angling to the lower Connecticut River Watershed (CRW) economy. The authors draw upon existing angler expenditure, river flow and geographic information system (GIS) data to relate anger use of the lower CRW …

Youths' Opinions About Their Opportunities For Success In Coös County Communities, Erin H. Sharp Sep 2012

Youths' Opinions About Their Opportunities For Success In Coös County Communities, Erin H. Sharp

Carsey Publications

This fact sheet examines Coös County youths’ beliefs about their access to educational and occupational opportunities in their home communities and whether these beliefs relate to their expectations for the future. To do so, author Erin Hiley Sharp draws on the Coös Youth Study data collected in 2011 from 318 eleventh graders in the public schools. Overall, Coös County youths’ opinions about the educational and occupational opportunities available in their home communities are somewhat positive but youths do perceive areas of concern. Youths’ perceptions of opportunities are fairly similar across the three regions of Coös County; however, those youths living …

We Should Have High Standards For All Students, Not Just Those At Harvard, Jayne M. Comstock Sep 2012

We Should Have High Standards For All Students, Not Just Those At Harvard, Jayne M. Comstock

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

After nearly a decade as a chief academic officer, I got used to people asking me my opinion on higher education issues. But now that I am working at the American Council on Education, the questions are more far reaching. For example, recently, someone asked me what I thought should be done about the cheating scandal at Harvard.
