The library literature abounds with articles, presentations, and books on using various sorts of distance learning tools and techniques for library services. (I direct you to the excellent 5th Bibliography of Library Services for Distance Learning Resources from the Distance Learning Section of ACRL or practically any library conference proceedings for numerous examples.) Many of those resources will discuss how a particular type of tool, say, webchat, can be used for library services, with examples of successful, and sometimes unsuccessful, use in various types of libraries. In the last fifteen years, there has been an increase in the implementation of distance education programs in colleges and universities. The challenge for academic libraries will be to create working models of library support for distance learners that are both economically sustainable, and qualitatively equitable to the support given to on-campus students. The author suggests that training in advanced web computing and educational technologies must begin in the graduate study of library and information science to help offset the training costs for academic libraries. When MSU librarians serve students at a distance, sometimes these distance clientele are in metropolitan communities much larger than MSU’s home, Bozeman. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is considered the most segregated city in the country and has the most disproportionate rate of minorities in Wisconsin’s juvenile justice system. The State of Wisconsin recognizes disproportionate minority contact (DMC) is a product of both differential offending by minorities and the racist differential processing by the juvenile justice system. Milwaukee’s residents are locked in a conflict about the role of racism in the high rates of minority crime and whether to address DMC with more stringent punishment or increasing alternatives to incarceration. The entrenched segregation between African American and Caucasian neighborhoods and social groups reinforces polarization, increasing …

In September 2012, the U.S. Census Bureau released a 2010 special report, The Emergency and Transitional Shelter Population: 2010 (ESTP:2010). The ETSP:2010 provides information on the numbers, demographic characteristics and geographic distribution of persons at emergency and transitional shelters. Shelters are defined as places where people who are experiencing homelessness stay overnight.

Over the last years the scholarly literature on careers has been enriched by the proposal of new career models which present a rhetoric that asks for the end of career boundaries: individual, hierarchical, organizational and geographical. However, in the real world, many constrains continue to exist. This paper tries to contribute to the understanding of the new boundaries of the 21st century careers. To do so we look at the case of careers in the arts. We review existing literature on careers, present a historical, contextual perspective of artistic careers, and conduct field work in the city of São Paulo …

The PhD experience is often a transition from student to future faculty member, which involves considerable learning and development (Glaze, 2002; Hockey, 2004). Using a lifelong learning perspective (Jarvis, 2009), the purpose of this article is to explore, through a reflective self-study, my process of learning throughout the PhD degree. In this qualitative self-study, I kept a detailed personal, professional, and academic reflective journal over four years and used the journal entries as data to explore the process of learning. The results reveal my ‘process of becoming’, moving from a beginner PhD student to an aspiring professor and new mother. …

Her research interests include knowledge organization standards and systems, as well as the evaluation of libraries’ technical services. The current academic performance struggles of college men is gaining increasing research attention (Sax, 2008a, 2008b), but few studies have explored the possible impact of gender-related attributes such as masculinity and femininity on academic help-seeking behaviors and academic performance. In this study of 567 college undergraduates, students who classified themselves as androgynous on the Bem Sex-Role Inventory were more likely to engage in academic help-seeking behaviors than those classified as male sex-typed, female sex-typed, and undifferentiated. No significant differences were found for academic performance. These results highlight the importance of exploring the potential influence of gender-related constructs on academic behavior …

Many of our image collections live in the non-MARC world. Recognizing that fact, this workshop will discuss tools and standards that are available to guide decisions about record creation for digital images in MARC and non-MARC environments. A major focus will be on the methods and considerations in image analysis as a means to uncover information about an image that would be useful in all record environments. We will look at MARC and non-MARC records, and will include records created using AACR2 and RDA.

This session will look at how the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model could be used to improve access to film and video. There will be a demonstration of a prototype end-user discovery interface (http:// blazing-sunset-24.heroku.com/) sponsored by OLAC and a discussion of a project using the XC Metadata Services Toolkit (http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/) to mine existing MARC data to populate this sort of interface. Participants will be asked to provide feedback and suggest future directions for this project.

Digitizing And Hosting Streaming Media Directly From Libraries, Cyrus Ford

The latest developments in streaming technologies allow direct access to media contents in real time through personal computers and mobile devices over the Internet. Ford’s presentation dealt with the different acquisition and distribution methods used in delivering a wide range of streaming video and audio resources to the faculty, staff, and students of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, as well as with the attendant licensing and copyright issues. Ford also talked about the joint project conducted by the library and the UNLV Film Department, the goal of which is to digitize videos for teaching, learning, and research purposes.

Snakes In The Library: "Taking Up Serpents" In A Dvd Collection, Valerie Prescott Adams

This poster session provided an overview of an archival collection, The Hood-Williamson Archives on the Serpent Handlers of Southern Appalachia, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The collection contains 184 DVD discs of original films that document the contemporary serpent handlers of Southern Appalachia from 1975 to 2004. Adams highlighted the creation and preservation processes, the metadata access to the collection, while emphasizing the importance of the unique collection to the scholars and researchers.
