Cities are vulnerable to a range of environmental hazards that are likely to be exacerbated by climate change: floods, droughts, poor air quality, and heat islands are a few examples. Assessments of this vulnerability often include an evaluation of a city’s adaptive capacity, or its potential to respond to changes in the frequency or severity of environmental hazards as well as its ability to take advantage of or mitigate these changes. Recent trends in many counseling training programs have reflected a proliferation of students entering graduate school directly after completing an undergraduate program. This proliferation has resulted in an increase in the number of emerging adult counseling students. Emerging adulthood is the term used to describe the ages of 18-25, and is unique in that individuals in this age group identify subjectively with aspects of both adolescence and adulthood without fully identifying with either. Lacking a crystallized adult identity poses unique challenges for these students, particularly with regard to developing professional identity and self-efficacy. An educational team comprising instructor, subject librarian, and digital librarian collaborated to repurpose a digital collection content management system as a tool that solved a multitiered data-collection and analysis problem, enhanced student understanding of ethnographic data collection and description, and provided a means for openly distributing the final product of a community-rooted research project.

In Canada half of all internationally educated nurses (IENs) are employed in Ontario, and in 2010 the top three countries where new IENs had received their training were the Philippines, India and China. This presentation reports on preliminary results from an ongoing research project examining the experiences of IENs from the Philippines and India who intend to enter Ontario’s nursing profession indirectly via temporary migration streams. The preliminary survey results will be presented, including differences in the characteristics and experiences of the two groups as they follow migration and occupational pathways to enter Canada and the nursing profession in Ontario. …

The Tyranny Of Choice: A Cross-Cultural Investigation Of Maximizing-Satisficing Effects On Well-Being, A. Roets, Barry Schwartz, Y. Guan

The present research investigated the relationship between individual differences in maximizing versus satisficing (i.e., seeking to make the single best choice, rather than a choice that is merely good enough) and well-being, in interaction with the society in which an individual lives. Data from three distinct cultural groups (adults), drawn respectively from the U.S. (N=307), Western Europe (N=263), and China (N=218), were analyzed. The results showed that, in societies where choice is abundant (i.e., U.S. and Western Europe), maximizers reported less well-being than satisficers, and this difference was mediated by experienced regret. We present iExplore, a Semantic Web based application that helps biomedical researchers study and explore biomedical knowledge interactively. iExplore uses the Biomedical Knowledge Repository (BKR), which integrates knowledge from various sources ranging from information extracted from biomedical literature (from PubMed) to many structured vocabularies in the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). The current version of BKR provides a unified provenance representation for 12 million semantic predications (triples with a predicate connecting a subject and an object) derived from 87 vocabulary families in the UMLS and 14 million predications extracted from 21 million PubMed abstracts. Though recent evidence indicates that rates of illicit drug use among African American women are now higher than the national average, little is known about the etiology of substance use in this population. In addition, the effects of racism and other cultural factors are understudied and may be unique amongst African American women. This cross-sectional study explores risk and protective factors for drug use among 204 African American women. More specifically, associations between racism experiences and drug use are investigated in the context of potential moderating influences (i.e., psychosocial resources, social safety net variables, and cultural identity and practices). Is Spanish-English Bilingualism Truly An Economic Benefit In New York?, Lionel Chan

Introduction: This report explores if there is truly a trend in income levels for Latinos who speak both English and Spanish compared to those of Latinos who speak English only in New York City.

Methods: Data on Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups were obtained from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, reorganized for public use by the Minnesota Population Center, University of Minnesota, IPUMSusa. Cases in the dataset were weighted and analyzed to produce population estimates.

Results: When taking into account language variables to analyze the income levels of Latinos, one notices a minor difference between bilingual Latinos and …

Objective: Pregnant women often report a lack of knowledge concerning the safety of exercising during pregnancy. Healthcare providers play an integral role in providing pregnant women with the necessary knowledge to promote antenatal physical activity. Thus, the objective of this study was to assess healthcare providers’ beliefs, attitudes, knowledge and practices related to antenatal physical activity counseling.

Study Design: 188 Providers (i.e. obstetricians, midwives, and family medicine physicians) completed a 39 closed-item survey. Characteristics among healthcare providers’ physical activity counseling practices as well as belief, attitudes and knowledge were explored.

This paper presents results from a content analytic study of U.S. and Canadian evening news programs on energy and environmental topics from 1999 to 2009. The analysis reveals the importance of coverage of weather and natural disasters in both countries — importance not just in terms of the volume of coverage, but in the role that coverage plays in driving discussion of broader, more thematic coverage of pollution and climate change. Indeed, causality tests reveal that coverage of climate change, pollution and related issues are strongly affected by — or, rather, dependent on — coverage of disasters and other weather …

Violent Youth Crime Plummets To A 30-Year Low, Jeffrey A. Butts

Publications and Research

FBI crime data show a considerable drop in violent youth crimes between 2010 and 2011, with arrests for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter dropping 20 percent in one year. Violent crime arrest rates in 2011 were 30 percent lower than in 2008. This databit shows the percent change in violent offenses charged against youth under 18 between 2010 and 2011 and the youth violent crime rate since 1981.

This volume, which comprises two parts: text and plates, is the first of the series documenting the results of the large-scale IAA excavations at ‘Akko during the years 1991–1998. It presents the Crusader-period pottery (12th–13th centuries CE), the largest pottery assemblage of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem to be studied from a site in the Levant to date. An important component of this assemblage is the wide variety of imported ceramic wares from regions throughout the western and eastern Mediterranean, some not previously identified in Crusader-period contexts in the Levant. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, as well as modern improvements, are based in part on an estimate of p = P(D < 0), where D = X−Y and X and Y are independent random variables; a common goal is to test H₀: p = 0.5. This corresponds to testing H₀: ξ_0.5, where ξ_0.5 is the 0.5 quantile of the distribution of D. If the distributions associated with X and Y do not differ, then D has a symmetric distribution about zero. In particular, ξ_q + ξ_1-q = 0 for any q ≤ 0.5, where ξ_q is the q^th quantile. Single sampling plans are investigated for variables indexed by acceptable quality level (AQL) and average outgoing quality limit (AOQL) under measurement error. Procedures and tables are provided for selection of single sampling plans for variables for given AQL and AOQL when rejected lots are 100% inspected for replacement of a nonconforming unit. For a particular sampling plan in operation for an observed measurement, a method for determining true operating characteristic (OC) functions and average outgoing quality (AOQ) is described for various error sizes.

An important assumption of ordinary regression models is independence among errors. This research considers the case of periodically correlated errors following the periodic AR model of order 1 (PAR(1)). The remedial measure for correlated errors in regression known as the Cochran-Orcutt procedure is generalized to the case of periodically correlated errors. The motivation for making such generalizations is that the response data may inhibit some seasonality, which may not be captured by the traditional AR(1) autoregressive model. A Proposed Ridge Parameter To Improve The Least Square Estimator, Ghadban Khalaf

Ridge regression, a form of biased linear estimation, is a more appropriate technique than ordinary least squares (OLS) estimation in the case of highly intercorrelated explanatory variables in the linear regression model Y = β + u. Two proposed ridge regression parameters from the mean square error (MSE) perspective are evaluated. A simulation study was conducted to demonstrate the performance of the proposed estimators compared to the OLS, HK and HKB estimators. Results show that the suggested estimators outperform the OLS and the other estimators regarding the ridge parameters in all situations examined.

With advances in science and information technologies, many scientific fields are able to meet the challenges of managing and analyzing high-dimensional data. A so-called large p small n problem arises when the number of experimental units, n, is equal to or smaller than the number of features, p. A methodology based on probability and graph theory, termed graphical models, is applied to study the structure and inference of such high-dimensional data.

The quality and the quantity of contextual information found in the descriptive metadata associated with digital representations of cultural objects are frequently inadequate for assuring that users will understand the nature of both the original object that has been digitally preserved, and the digital representation itself. This paper proposes and defines a framework for ensuring that relevant contextual metadata is easily collected and maintained.
