Water-borne disease and its symptoms, such as stomach cramps and diarrhea, are a serious concern in areas that are not connected to a public water system. To investigate the impacts of not being connected to a community water system, I surveyed households in El Paso County colonias that were not connected to a community water system (household n = 75, individual n= 293) and households that were connected to a community water system (household n = 75, individual n= 320). Previous research in the areas of social, expert witness, and child witness psychology has found evidence for a multiple factor model of witness credibility. While a multiple factor model has not yet been tested with adult witnesses who are not experts, results from previous credibility research suggest that there may be at least two components of adult witness credibility: perceived cognitive accuracy and perceived honesty. Homicides, induced by the drug war, in Ciudad Juárez drastically increased beginning in 2007. Few studies have been carried out which asses the economic impacts of crime and homicides. Furthermore, the existing literature lacks regional assessment efforts (Rios 2008). Because of geographical proximity and close economic ties, this paper reviews some of the potential impacts the Ciudad Juárez homicides may have on the El Paso regional economy. Wiggins (1959) developed a social desirability scale which is one of the most valid measures of positive distortion response bias (PD) on the MMPI. The present study used Wiggins' methods to develop three PD measures for the Schedule for Nonadaptive and Adaptive Personality-2 (SNAP-2; Clark, 2009). In Study One, 562 participants rated the items of the SNAP-2 on three dimensions: Social Desirability (SD), True of Self (TOS), or True of Other People in General (TPG). There is a dearth of literature regarding culturally- and theoretically-based constructs related to weight control in Hispanic populations. Aims of this study included observing culturally and theoretically based correlates of weight and waist circumference in an overweight / obese Hispanic sample. Data were collected from 232 participants at a local health care clinic. Measures included demographics, cultural constructs, and theoretical constructs from Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). It further explores the impact this targeting had on the Chicano movement by drawing comparisons between what transpired with the Chicano movement and comparing it to the African American movement. This communication study explores the relationship between self-concept and life satisfaction of single women and examines, through the use of interviews, how these two factors are connected. This study aims to gain perspective of why women remain single, what pressures single women face, and how a woman’s life satisfaction and self-concept are affected by being single. The present study is a corpus-based approach using both the British National Corpus (BNC) and the Blog Authorship Corpus (BAC) to identify variance in spoken use of fuck between genders, age groups, and social classes. The resulting analysis shows that there is little variance in use between male and female speakers, while use is most prevalent during the teens and early 20s. The latest estimates show that for fourth year in succession GDP growth in 2011-12 will again fall below its long term growth rate. With population rising around 2 percent per capita income will increase by around 2 percent. Optimal International Agreement And Treatment Of Domestic Subsidy, Gea M. Lee

We investigate how a domestic subsidy is treated in an international agreement, when a government, having incentive to use its domestic subsidy as a means of import protection, can disguise its protective use of subsidy as a legitimate intervention with which to address a market imperfection. We show that any optimal agreement, as opposed to the conventional message of the targeting principle, restricts the home government’s freedom to select its domestic subsidy in order to increase the market-access level for foreign exporters. Our finding suggests that a proper restriction on domestic subsidy is somewhere between GATT and WTO rules.

Pirates And Fishermen: Is Less Patrolling Always Bad?, Brishti Guha

Motivated by the Somali fishermen–pirates, I explore the time allocation decision of potential pirates between piracy and an alternative non-violent occupation, fishing, when the returns of both piracy and fishing are sensitive to patrolling intensity. For a range of parameters, the static model yields multiple equilibria, an “efficient” one with no patrolling and low piracy, a less efficient equilibrium with intermediate levels of both piracy and patrolling and a highly inefficient high-patrolling high-piracy equilibrium. Analyzing the dynamic analogue, I obtain the surprising result that sufficiently low patrolling can be a good strategy.

In the guise of critical analysis of the limits of law reform, the familiar phrase “unintended consequences” serves to rationalize rising inequality and to undermine democratic accountability. This paper examines how the phrase promotes a story of disentitlement, using the recent financial crisis as an example. By naturalizing inequality as power beyond law’s reach, this phrase’s message that benign law is likely to bring unequal consequences dovetails with a seemingly contradictory message that benign intent, rather than harmful impact, is what primarily counts for evaluating inequality.

What makes some wars longer and more severe than others is an important question in international relations scholarship. One underexplored answer to this question is the role that third party joiners play in lengthening conflicts, especially those states that intervene militarily after a war’s initial stages. This article argues that late joining complicates bargaining by adding new issues to the war and increases uncertainty about the relative balance of forces. Thus, more information will be needed to resolve the bargaining impasse. This means additional fighting and a longer war. This lengthening in turn increases the number of casualties. This is …
