During the past year, the UC-Irvine Libraries has developed a web based virtual reference collection. This process brought together librarians representing multidisciplines to create a "ready reference-like" homepage to make available reference information by means of remote access. The issues of design, intellectual content and continuing evaluation and maintenance are discussed. This project was developed in the context of a team-based environment and the advantages and problems of teambuilding practices contributed to how the project evolved. The leadership and decisionmaking role of the UCI Libraries in mounting and providing such resources was enhanced in the academic community. Demonstration of the …

This workshop is cosponsored by the Intermountain Oil and Gas BMP Project and the Colorado Water and Energy Research Center, with financial support from the Environmentally Friendly Drilling Project and the CU-Boulder Outreach Committee.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) recently initiated a rule making process to develop new, statewide regulations for baseline sampling and monitoring of groundwater near new oil and gas wells. COGCC’s first rule making hearing was held November 14; the rule is expected to be finalized December 10. Social support has been linked to positive health outcomes. Specifically, having available support from a friend may act as a buffer to the negative effects of stress on cardiovascular reactivity. Relationship quality is an important moderator of this effect. The purpose of this study was to examine how cardiovascular reactivity is affected by relationship quality within friendships and whether the length of relationship and frequency of contact may moderate the effect. 134 healthy male and female adults (and their same-sex friend) were recruited to participate. Results revealed no significant difference between subjects interacting with supportive friends compared to interacting with …

The Qualitative Report

While considerable research has examined how clients learn from psychotherapists, there is only sparse literature on what therapists learn from their therapy clients. In a qualitative, exploratory study, nine researchers interviewed 61 psychologists from across North America in order to see what psychotherapists may have learned and how they have been affected by their clients both personally and professionally. Participants responded to nine open-ended questions on learning about life-lessons, relationships, ethical decision-making, coping, courage, wisdom, psychopathology, personality, cultural differences, lifespan development and more. The short allele of the serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) moderates the effects of stress on vulnerability to mood and anxiety disorders. The mechanism by which this occurs may relate to differential sensitivity to stressful life events. Here we explored whether 5- HTTLPR and sex affected behavioral responses to repeated maternal separation in infant rhesus macaques. Behaviors were collected during the acute (Day 1) and the chronic (Days 2–4) phases of the separation, and the effects of duration of separation (acute vs. chronic), genotype (long/long vs. short allele), and sex (male vs. female) on behavioral responses were analyzed across …

Teaching qualitative research methods (QRM), particularly early on in one’s academic career, can be challenging. This paper describes shared peer journaling as one way in which to cope with challenges such as complex debates in the field and student resistance to interpretive paradigms. Literature on teaching QRM and the pedagogical value of journaling for metacognition are reviewed. The two authors describe key points about their teaching contexts and then demonstrate with journal excerpts how they developed (a) clarity, (b) confidence, and (c) connection through two years of co-creating their journal. Within the last decade, bricolage, as an approach to qualitative inquiry, has gained popularity in academic circles. However, while conceptual and concrete precedents exist, the approach has remained relatively misunderstood, and unpopular, in broader research communities. This may be because the complexity of the approach has stymied widespread discussions and commentary. This article means to address this concern by providing a thick, yet accessible, introduction to bricolage as an approach to qualitative inquiry. Pria telah mengikuti program keluarga berencana (KB) sejak dahulu. Metode pantang berkala dan kondom telah dikenal berabad-abad lalu, tetapi sejak ditemukan kontrasepsi wanita, program KB pada pria seakan diabaikan. Keikutsertaan pria dalam ber-KB masih sangat rendah jika dibandingkan dengan Bangladesh, Pakistan, dan Nepal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis keikutsertaan pria dalam ber-KB meliputi keterpaparan media massa dan kontak informasi KB melalui media massa. Penelitian ini menggunakan data Survei Demografi dan Kesehatan Indonesia (SDKI) tahun 2007 dengan pendekatan cross sectional terhadap 6.013 pria menikah usia 15 – 54 tahun. This paper traced the origin of library and information science education inNigeriato the advent of new technologies which have brought about tremendous impact in the delivery of services in academic libraries.. The population comprised 17 library educators in library schools in South East Nigeria Federal Universities. A structured questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection and copies of the questionnaire were distributed to respondents.
