Fab Labs At The Library: Community 'Makerspaces' Give Access To Cutting-Edge Tools, Pat Newcombe, Nicole Belbin

The Authors explore a new service that a handful of public libraries are offering their patrons -- multipurpose workshops for designing and creating objects. At the heart of these “makerspaces,” “fab labs,” or “hackerspaces” is a 3-D printer that creates an object based on a digital design by melting the plastic and extruding it to form the shape of the object it is printing. The Authors interviewed two library directors, Jeff Krull and Sue Considine, on their different approaches to implementing this innovative service.

The Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) Division of Juvenile Services (DJS) collaborates with the Muskie School of Public Service in a state‐university partnership to analyze juvenile recidivism rates. DJS measures juvenile justice outcomes to guide policy and program development geared toward recidivism reduction. Reduction of youth recidivism in Maine increases public safety.

Recidivism in this report is defined as a re‐adjudication (juvenile system) or conviction (adult system) for a new offense committed by a youth in Maine within three years after release from DJS supervision. This report measures DJS impact on youth who have been released from DJS supervision by …

Library Commons Project

The Study Group was constituted in March 2012 and charged with examining both library public services and library public spaces with the goals of developing a new service model and adapting existing library space to better serve library clientele’s needs. To those ends, the group has reviewed library use statistics, surveyed articles from the professional literature that review the experiences of other libraries, and made site visits to Florida State University and the University of Central Florida, both of which have recently developed knowledge or learning commons and reexamined their own service models.

Scholars and policy makers have long been troubled by the potential for some youth to receive disparate sanctioning as a function of extralegal factors, especially against the backdrop of ethnic/racial minority group overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system as a whole. Beginning in the late 1990s, many states began to adopt a graduated sanctions model in response to the emerging ‘get tough’ zeitgeist of the day. This team reviewed the literature on community indicators, worked with the Portland team to determine qualities of good indicator systems, and then developed an extensive field interview and observation instrument. This instrument was then used to assess a variety of community attributes in case study sites. Our research expanded on the work of the case studies in community revitalization work. They considered the fiscal issues facing local governments and discuss how that may impact their current and future efforts to revitalize their community. Competitive employment is a common goal for those with severe mental illness (SMI), and evidence shows that the majority of those with SMI want to work. However, despite the desire to work competitively, those with SMI have the highest unemployment rate of any disability group (Mueser, Salyers, & Muesar, 2001). The Recovery Model is an approach to Supported Employment that has provided hope for those with mental illness, as well as challenged treatment providers to adopt a more collaborative, optimistic approach to helping clients live fulfilling, self-directed lives.
