It is essential for organizations to understand how turnover functions within their business and the potential other organizational factors have on affecting turnover, in order to know how to leverage these factors to effectively reduce turnover and the costs associated with it. The present study examined the relationship between employee engagement and turnover in clinical departments within a healthcare setting and the effects other organizational factors, such as respect, diversity, diversity climate and mission fulfillment have on that relationship. The current study outlines an attempt to create a selection test for a Midwestern university aviation department pilot training program. Thirty-seven pilots were given a pre-test consisting of cognitive (math, arithmetic reasoning, spatial measures, table reading, and mechanical knowledge), attitudinal (cockpit management attitudes questionnaire- CMAQ), and personality questions (IPIP items, Achievement-Striving, Impatience/Irritability, and the Academic Motivation Scale). An additional measure of professionalism was collected during the training program. Following the completion of a 25-lesson course in flight training, pilots were assessed on performance throughout the initial flight course. Student engagement measures have been shown to be excellent predictors of desirable educational outcomes, and in some cases, these measures are being used as a means of institutional accountability. The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is one of the most widely used measures of student engagement. In this study, I examine the relationship between NSSE subscale scores and measures of student academic success. I also examine the extent to which pre-college ability and ethnicity moderate the relationship between engagement scores and academic outcomes. Public response to fire alarms has been a major concern for decades. In particular, college dormitories pose a real threat for a catastrophic event if proper fire protocol is not carried out. Social influences may play a role in the decision dorm residents make when a fire alarm is sounded. More specifically, this research addresses to what degree does an authority figure, like a community advisor (CA), a friend, an unknown resident, or being alone, influence self-reported responses to fire alarms. Community mentoring programs target at-risk youth with the aim of providing them with a positive, stable adult presence in their lives. Relationship quality of the mentors and mentees has been linked to multiple external factors and youth outcomes. This study investigated mentor-mentee relationship quality (i.e., youth's perceived trust in his or her mentor) and the associations between the amount of time the pair spent together per week, parents' level of involvement in planning activities between their child and their mentor, and youth's improvement in commitment to learning. Dollarization And Banking Stability In Ecuador, Cristobal Perez

This thesis examines the relationship between dollarization and banking stability in Ecuador. Through an econometric analysis I find that the main variables that affect banking stability in Ecuador are GDP, liquidity, financial efficiency, the proportion of productive assets, the percentage of past-due loans, the ratio between total assets and total liabilities, and the degree of concentration of the banking sector. All these variables have improved in the past decade thus strengthening banking stability. Furthermore, the four main effects of dollarization on a small, open, and developing economy include: i) the statistically significant decrease in inflation, ii) the removal of the …

The current study investigates the relationship between the English language proficiency of Japanese students in a short term study abroad (SA) context and the structure of their social networks. Their personal social networks were investigated through individual interviews. Analyzing their investment in English along with examining their construction of social networks, the purpose of this study is to investigate if there are any relationships between their type of social network and their English proficiency. Participation in PAT-Net 2011 led me to rethink some basic assumptions surrounding public administration theory and what constitutes knowledge in public administration scholarship and practice. My reflection responds to the major questions posed during the Ph.D. Student Workshop on "Writing Theory in a Technicist Field": specifically, why a technicist attitude is so pervasive in a democratic society and what alternatives have been posited for confronting technicism to advance theoretical and critical scholarship.

In Fall 2009, the Leonard Lief Library of Lehman College developed a pilot e-reader and e-book lending program, making Lehman the first campus within the City University of New York (CUNY) to introduce these new services. The following article describes the project from a practical viewpoint, discussing e-reader and e-book vendor selection, user guides, training, lending logistics, and marketing, as well as other unanticipated challenges.

Egypt’s economic history from the abdication of King Farouk in 1952 to the abdication of Husni Mubarak in 2011 can be divided into three grand stages: the era of state-led development, the gradual erosion of state-led development, and the blossoming of neoliberalism. The period from 2008 to the present (July 2011), that is, from global financial crisis and recession to fragile recovery, may be a fourth stage—entailing at least the erosion of neoliberalism and, perhaps, the beginning of an era of more balanced growth with a more equitable distribution of benefits.

"Instant runoff voting" (IRV) is a system that allows voters to rank their choices in a multicandidate election. Thus, the second-choice voters of less successful candidates are redistributed to the front-runners. The purpose of this system is to prevent candidates opposed by a majority of voters from winning. For example, if candidates A and B each have 40 percent of the vote and candidate C has 20 percent, the front-runner supported by the majority of C's supporters is the true "majority choice" and will win under IRV. The purpose of this Article is to ascertain whether (1) suburban sprawl is as widespread in Canadian metropolitan areas as in their American counterparts, and (2) Canadian government policies, and in particular Canadian zoning law and transportation policies, encourage sprawl. The article concludes that Canadian metropolitan areas are in fact somewhat less sprawling than most of their American counterparts, but that in Canada, as in the United States, government land use regulation and government transportation policy do favor sprawl to some extent. Anxiety and depression are among the most common types of psychopathology in children and adolescents, with lifetime prevalence rates approaching 32% and 12% before age 18, respectively (Costello, Egger, & Angold, 2005; Merikangas et al., 2010). Youth with internalizing disorders experience significant impairment in friendships, family relationships, and academic functioning, including difficulty concentrating on schoolwork and lower academic achievement (Colman, Wadsworth, Croudace, & Jones, 2007; Grover, Ginsburg, & Ialongo, 2007; Langley, Bergman, McCracken, & Piacentini, 2004). Without intervention, these disorders frequently persist into adulthood (Costello et al., 2005), placing youth at substantial risk for long-term disability (Bittner et al., 2007; …

The ancient spring of Nazareth is associated with Mary, Mother of Jesus, and has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries. Excavations in its vicinity revealed remains from two millennia of Nazareth’s history, mainly from the Crusader period when an elaborate fountain house was erected, and the Mamluk period, when significant alterations were made to it.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2011 was awarded to scientists from two different research collaborations that independently and contemporaneously discovered from observations of distant supernovae that the universe's expansion is accelerating. One half of the prize was awarded to Saul Perlmutter and the other half jointly to Brian P. Schmidt and Adam G. Riess. The findings, first reported in 1998, shocked the cosmology community, as the prevailing theory at the time favored a “closed” or “steady-state” universe, rather than one wherein the universe expands faster and faster, ultimately ending as a cold, dark, (largely) empty space.
