Fear As A Predictor Of Life Satisfaction For Older Adults In Retirement In Canada, Satoko Nguyen
Fear As A Predictor Of Life Satisfaction For Older Adults In Retirement In Canada, Satoko Nguyen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In developed countries, most healthy retirees still have fears about growing old; however, there is little empirical data on the relationship between this fear and quality of life. This cross-sectional, correlational, survey study tested whether a summated measure of fears of growing old (fear) based on Laslett’s theory of retirement (the third age) significantly predicted life satisfaction and retirement satisfaction after adjusting for significant activity theory covariates. 190 Canadian volunteer retirees at 3 community retirement centers completed surveys. A pilot study established the reliability and valdity of the scales, including an instrument Fears about Growing Old derived from Laslett’s exemplifications, …
The Impact Of Culture, Industry Type, And Job Relevance On Applicant Reactions, Olivia Martin
The Impact Of Culture, Industry Type, And Job Relevance On Applicant Reactions, Olivia Martin
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The present study sought to understand how national culture, industry, and the perception of job relevance has an influence on an applicant's reaction to an online personnel selection assessment. A review of the literature on attribution theory (Fiske & Taylor, 1984; Ployhart & Harold, 2004) and organizational justice theory (Gilliland, 1993; Ployhart & Harold, 2004) provided the theoretical basis for the hypotheses of this paper. Applicant data from companies in manufacturing, finance, retail, and telecommunications were examined to explore differences in applicant reactions. Additionally, data between those in Mexico and the US within the telecommunications industry were examined to distinguish …
Internal Consistency Of The Self-Perception Profile For Children: Using Covariance Structure Modeling To Overcome The Limitations Of Cronbach's Α, Ian Cero
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Self-perception is linked to a variety of psychosocial outcomes and its measurement has become a priority across a several disciplines. The Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPP-C) is commonly utilized to measure both global self worth and several important sub-domains of self-perception. Although much research has suggested this instrument possesses good internal consistency, previous investigations have primarily employed Cronbach's α; to estimate the stability of responding across items. This represents an important limitation, as α; is vulnerable to mis-estimation in the presence of correlated errors and non-τ-equivalent indicators, neither of which have been ruled out for the SPP-C. The present investigation …

Population explosion is a major concern for many Middle Eastern countries. This study is aimed at exploring the urban-rural differences in the use of modern contraceptives in Yemen. The study also took into consideration the variable education that can influence the use of contraceptives among people of Yemen. This analysis utilized the secondary data from Yemen Demographic and Maternal Health Survey (YDMHS) of 1997. The YDMHS (1997) survey sample consisted of 10,414 women. The YDMHS survey was conducted with ever-married women in the age group of 15 to 49. This study is based on the ecosystem theory that states that …
The Effects Of A Preparatory Skills Training On Student Success, Ajal B. Patel
The Effects Of A Preparatory Skills Training On Student Success, Ajal B. Patel
Psychology Theses - Archive
The effects of college-level student attrition are wide-spread. Numerous different approaches have been implemented to reduce these rates, such as offering freshman level seminars to aid the transition from high school to college and the use of support systems consisting of guidance counselors, teachers, parents and/or friends. A great deal of research has advocated for, and supported the utility of, using training initiatives for employees to improve their job performance. Based on these same principles, we can improve student success. A thorough literature review was first conducted, examining the factors that relate to student success. Moreover, a pilot study was …

Farmers Markets, Low Income Communities And Government Assistance Programs, Alysha Brady
Public Affairs Theses - Archive
Since the passage in 1976 of the Farmer-to-Consumer Direct Marketing Act, there has been a sharp rise in number of farmers markets in this country, from approximately 600 in the 1970s to over 7,000 today. With this increase, farmers markets began to attract attention not only from farmers and consumers, but also from public policy experts. Some research has suggested that farmers markets may be a way to alleviate the poor access to healthy foods in low-income communities, in areas known as food deserts. The WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and the Seniors Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) are …

Social Work Dissertations - Archive
This study examined the effects of social and economic factors on women's reproductive health in India. Primarily, the study analyzed data from the India Human Development Survey I (IHDS-I 2004-2005). Several statistical methods were used to analyze the data, including descriptive analysis, regression, structural equation modeling (SEM), and multinomial regression. The regression result suggests that social capital, spousal communication, region, autonomy, and accessibility all have significant positive effects on women's reproductive health in India. The SEM suggests that all independent variables have significant effects on women's reproductive health. Multinomial regression offers similar results as regression. Income has no effect on …

The Struggle And Strength Of Sexual Minorities And Suicidality: A Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis, Albert L. Crump
Social Work Theses - Archive
The researcher conducted a Qualitative Interpretive Meta-Synthesis (QIMS) of the intersection of sexual minority status and suicidality. Seven qualitative research studies were identified which included the stories of members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community (n=96). Five overarching themes were discovered: Internal Struggle, External Struggle, Isolation, Internal Strength, and External Strength. The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide was used to guide the interpretation of the findings of this QIMS in order to expand the understanding of suicide as it applies to the GLBT community. Implications for research, practice, and policy are discussed.
Positive Parenting Intervention: As Prevention To Child Maltreatment, Khadra Abdille
Positive Parenting Intervention: As Prevention To Child Maltreatment, Khadra Abdille
Social Work Theses - Archive
One of the biggest social problems in the United States today is child maltreatment. Extensive literature has been written about the problem and many researchers, child welfare workers, and policy makers believe that the astounding numbers of child abuse and neglect is directly associated to poverty and stress among single parents, parental substance abuse, low self-efficacy and ineffective parenting. Studies have proven that there is a strong relationship between child maltreatment (abuse and neglect) and low self-efficacy, substance abuse and poverty. Many studies have suggested that prevention and intervention educational programs can help parents learn positive parenting skills and subsequently …
Sustainability In The Private And Public Sectors: A Comparison Of Motivators, Actions, Barriers And Reporting Of Results, Lisa London
Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive
The concept of sustainability has developed over the past 40 years and continues to advance as organizations implement sustainable practices, quantify sustainability results, and communicate their accomplishments to key stakeholders. Despite these advances, sustainability remains an emerging field in need of clear definitions and goals; development of best practices; and effective tools for measuring, reporting, and benchmarking results. The literature suggests that the private sector is more advanced than the public sector in addressing these challenges. The purpose of this study was to discover if the public sector lags in pursuing sustainability, and if so, to identify some of the …
Emerging Adulthood As A Unique Stage In Erikson's Psychosocial Development Theory: Incarnation V. Impudence, Alicia Victoria Patterson
Emerging Adulthood As A Unique Stage In Erikson's Psychosocial Development Theory: Incarnation V. Impudence, Alicia Victoria Patterson
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation adds to Erikson's theory of psychosocial development by adding a stage between adolescence and young adulthood called emerging adulthood. It was theorized that the crisis of emerging adulthood, incarnation versus impudence, is resolved through experimental sexuality, temporal and spatial social and intimate relationships, interdependence and self-sufficiency and dependence and helplessness, and relativist and absolutist ideological experimentation. Research on transitions to adulthood and a sociological phenomenon of emerging adulthood, boomerang children, provide the background for study of Eriksonian emerging adulthood. An online questionnaire was created to collect data to determine if the theorized dimensions of emerging adulthood contribute to …

Subgrouping Of Nisoic (Yi) Languages: A Study From The Perspectives Of Shared Innovation And Phylogenetic Estimation, Ziwo Qiu-Fuyuan Lama
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
In southwest China and neighboring countries, including Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar, there live over 100 ethnic groups who speak languages known as Nuosu, Naxi, Hani, Lisu, Lahu, etc. These languages belong to the Nisoic Branch or the Loloish Branch of Tibeto-Burman (TB) subfamily of Sino-Tibetan. Though the Nisoic affiliation to TB is unquestionable, its internal subgrouping has not been settled. This dissertation aims to study the internal relationship of 34 Nisoic and three Burmic languages from two perspectives shared innovation and phylogenetic estimation. Shared innovation has been regarded as the most reliable criterion in determining subgroups of language descent …
Repair Negotiation By English L2 Learners, Yujeong Choi
Repair Negotiation By English L2 Learners, Yujeong Choi
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
It is widely accepted that L2 learners often face communication problems due to lack of competency in the target language and familiarity with its culture of origin. One way to resolve miscommunication problems is to seek clarification of the utterance; this process is called repair negotiation (Nakahama et al. 2001). Repair negotiation has been studied as a subset of Long's (1996) Interaction Hypothesis in second language acquisition (SLA). Existing research has solely focused on repair negotiation which is initiated by the native speaker or teacher rather than the L2 learner, thus resulting in other-initiated repair (OIR). However, it has also …

Using Critical Race Theory To Analyze How Disney Constructs Diversity: A Construct For The Baccalaureate Human Behavior In The Social Environment Curriculum, Amy Cappiccie, Janice Chadha, Muh Bi Lin, Frank Snyder
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
Utilizing the basic tenets of critical race theory, the authors draw upon the expertise of multicultural scholars to raise consciousness and facilitate BSW classroom dialogue about microagressions perpetrated in Disney animations. Microaggressions pervade our media partly because they typically operate outside the thresh-old of the dominant culture’s conscious awareness. Our main consciousness-raising method is to expose social work students to microagressions depicted in Disney animations and then use the classroom as a counterspace to process the experience. We note that utilizing critical race theory to become conscious of microaggressions within Disney animations is the first step toward eradicating them.

Can Undergraduate Students Make Optimal Decisions About Student Loans?
Can Undergraduate Students Make Optimal Decisions About Student Loans?
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This study shows that although in theory students are capable of making simple payoff calculations and choosing the optimal choice, when it comes to student loans, they are unable and/or unwilling to extend those calculations to complicated examples that incorporate uncertainty and resemble real life. A probit regression finds that academic standing, time spent at a community college and the amount of loans already taken to date influence students’ rationality to achieve the optimal payoff.
Still No Significant Difference? The Impact Of Distance Learning On Student Success In Undergraduate Managerial Economics
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
The increasing use of distance learning technologies to teach business and economics courses quickly leads to the question of the effectiveness of these approaches. This control group study examined the grade performances of 147 undergraduate managerial economics students. Some students took the course in a conventional bricks and mortar classroom, while others simultaneously received the course via three different televised modes. External student learning economies appeared. Students who had the opportunity to interact with each other face-to-face performed better than those lacking that opportunity. The results do not encourage the conclusion that student learning is unaffected by how the students …
Teaching And Experiment With Global Currency–Hedging Strategies
Teaching And Experiment With Global Currency–Hedging Strategies
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
This paper presents a method in teaching currency hedging, in which we incorporate a novel strategy recently published in the Journal of Finance (Campbell et al. 2010). We design a project to implement a simple and intuitive version of the strategy that can help students deepen their understanding of diversification and currency hedging. By doing the project, students will learn how to execute the strategy and understand the underlying factors that affect the results. The project also gives students good practice in data collection and analysis. It is a good example of incorporating more advanced academic findings into undergraduate finance …

What is the political valence of blackness at the beginning of the second decade of the twenty-first century; has it waxed or waned? Is it headed to greater potency or back into the dark days of the past when complexion determined the worth of character? Major political advances have been achieved nationally in the last ten years, most significantly in the election of the nation’s first African American president. Yet a resistant status quo remains. The push to unseat President Obama is virulent, and it is hard to imagine that all of the motivation to do so is tied only …

Governor Deval Patrick And The Representation Of Massachusetts’ Black Interests, Ravi K. Perry
Trotter Review
This article examines the rhetorical strategies and legislative initiatives of Deval Patrick and his efforts to represent black interests in Massachusetts. Utilizing speech content analysis, census data, interview data, and archives of executive and legislative actions, the article identifies that Massachusetts’ only black governor has been able to advance policies and programs designed to represent black interests. The results indicate that when black interest policy actions are framed utilizing a targeted universalistic rhetorical strategy, Patrick advanced black interests as he detailed how his proposed initiatives benefited all citizens. At the state level, the finding exposes the limits of the deracialization …
If Clothes Could Speak: Sartorial Analysis Of Japanese Cultural Identity, Ivy Han
If Clothes Could Speak: Sartorial Analysis Of Japanese Cultural Identity, Ivy Han
Whittier Scholars Program
This project is a deep sartorial analysis of Rei Kawakubo’s and Yohji Yamamoto’s designs and how they reveal the global influences that shaped the cultural identity of contemporary Japan. However, such analysis of high fashion would only be half of the identity; to fully understand Japanese cultural identity, it is equally important to delve into the sartorial phenomenon of Harajuku street fashion. While Japanese avant-garde fashion and Harajuku youth culture seem to be at opposite ends of the sartorial spectrum, the two have a closely entwined complementary relationship. Japanese high fashion and street fashion demonstrate how such cultural commodification impacts …

Considered A Foreign Policy Neophyte, Barack Obama Emerges As One Of The Nation’S Most Competent Commanders In Chief, Howard Manly
Trotter Review
During the 2008 presidential campaign, the main criticism against Barack Obama was that he was too green to lead America’s foreign policy and military.
It was a charge that Republican conservatives made against Democratic candidates with predictable frequency and had become a proven winning strategy after Ronald Reagan steamrolled perceived military bumbler Jimmy Carter in 1980. Conventional wisdom suggested that strategy would work even better against Obama.
In a move that foreshadowed his military decision-making, Obama authorized within the first four months of his administration the military rescue of Richard Phillips, the American sea captain taken hostage by pirates in …

After the 2010 elections, the number of women holding elective office in Massachusetts plummeted to 1998 levels, with women comprising only 24 percent of all officeholders and 20 percent of local elected officials.
The figures for women of color who were officeholders were even starker: They held only 2 percent of elected offices, despite people of color comprising more than 20 percent of the state’s population. Women of color who are current officeholders in Massachusetts are typically the “first and only.” In the state senate, there is one woman of color, Sonia Chang-Diaz. She is the first Latina woman to …

Denver And Boston: Why One City Elects Black Mayors And The Other Has Not, Kenneth J. Cooper
Trotter Review
Denver’s population is only 10 percent black, and has never been above 12 percent in any Census, yet in July 2011 the city elected a black mayor. Michael Hancock, a former city councilman, is actually the second African-American mayor of Denver. Wellington Webb served the limit of three terms through 2003. Three of the city’s last four mayors have been of color. Federico Peña, a Mexican American, became the first in 1983.
At 24 percent, Boston’s black population is twice as large as Denver’s and has been so throughout the three decades during which Denver has sent two African Americans …

The Dollar Hegemony And The U.S.-China Monetary Disputes, Xiongwei Cao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the current disputes between the United States and China over the exchange rate of the Chinese currency renminbi using an International Political Economy (IPE) analysis. Monetary relations are not mere economic affairs, but bear geopolitical implications. Money is power. Money is politics. The pursuit of monetary power is an important part of great power politics. Based on this assertion, the thesis studies past cases of monetary power struggles between the United States and the Great Britain, the Soviet Union, Japan, and the European Union (EU), respectively. The thesis then investigates the dollar’s status as the dominant international …
