Cultural ecosystem services (ES) are consistently recognized but not yet adequately defined or integrated within the ES framework. A substantial body of models, methods, and data relevant to cultural services has been developed within the social and behavioral sciences before and outside of the ES approach. A selective review of work in landscape aesthetics, cultural heritage, outdoor recreation, and spiritual significance demonstrates opportunities for operationally defining cultural services in terms of socioecological models, consistent with the larger set of ES. Such models explicitly link ecological structures and functions with cultural values and benefits, facilitating communication between scientists and stakeholders and …

Reducinggroundwater Nitrate In The Judith River Watershed: A Participatory Approach To Achieveeffective Management For Improved Water Quality, S. Ewing, A. Sigler, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, C. Jones, G. Weissmann

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Rising levels of nitrate in groundwater threaten human health and downstream ecosystems. In the Judith River Watershed, Montana, groundwater nitrate concentrations frequently exceed 10 mg L-‐1, and may be increasing due to agricultural practices on thin soils overlying shallow, unconfined aquifers with short groundwater residence :mes. Previous extension and research ac:vi:es in the watershed have provided key data and established working relationships with local stakeholders, but adoption rates of water quality best management practices (BMPs) have been low. With this project, we undertake a participatory approach that engages agricultural producers and stakeholders to:

Correlations Between Compassion Fatigue And Perceived Quality Of Life Among Medical Social Workers, Shannon Casey Saldin

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study is to examine the correlations between compassion fatigue (CF) and the quality of life among medical social workers. The types of clients that these social workers encounter have experienced oppression, abuse, violence and injustice and it can be a difficult and isolating aspect of work for many social workers.

Create Your Own Cephalonian Method Adventure: An Interactive Session, Amanda Izenstark, Mary Macdonald Jan 2012

Create Your Own Cephalonian Method Adventure: An Interactive Session, Amanda Izenstark, Mary Macdonald

Public Services Faculty Publications

The Cephalonian Method has garnered much interest for its possibilities for engaging students in what could be an otherwise one-sided orientation program. This workshop will help attendees determine how and when to incorporate the Cephalonian Method into their sessions, how to discuss the technique with colleagues, and, most importantly, develop a set of Cephalonian Method questions that can be used in orientation and instruction sessions at their home libraries.

Canadian Academic Library Support For International Faculty: Library Experience And Information Needs Of Chinese Visiting Scholars At The University Of Western Ontario, Shiyi Xie Jan 2012

Canadian Academic Library Support For International Faculty: Library Experience And Information Needs Of Chinese Visiting Scholars At The University Of Western Ontario, Shiyi Xie

Western Libraries Publications

International faculty constitute a relatively small proportion of the library user community in Canadian post-secondary institutions, but they are underserved when compared to other user groups on campus, particularly international students. The author obtained first hand information about Chinese visiting scholars at the University of Western Ontario, and in this paper she presents conclusions from her experience regarding the visiting scholars' use of libraries as well as some recommendations for serving international faculty. The author suggests that academic libraries carefully consider international faculty when planning relevant services for diverse user groups. Providing necessary and satisfying library services for this group …

Semantic And Associative Relations In Adolescents And Young Adults: Examining A Tenuous Dichotomy, Ken Mcrae, Saman Khalkhali, Mary Hare Jan 2012

Semantic And Associative Relations In Adolescents And Young Adults: Examining A Tenuous Dichotomy, Ken Mcrae, Saman Khalkhali, Mary Hare

Psychology Publications

The constructs of semantic and associative relatedness have played a prominent role in research on semantic memory because researchers have historically drawn on the distinction between these two types of relations when formulating theories, creating experimental conditions, and explaining empirical results. We argue that the binary distinction between semantics and association is rooted in a fundamental problem in how the two are defined and contrasted. Whereas semantic relatedness has typically been limited to category coordinates, associative relatedness has most often been operationalized using the word association task. We show that meaningful semantic relations between words/concepts certainly extend beyond category coordinates, …

Cognitive Organization, Perceptions Of Parenting And Depression Symptoms In Early Adolescence, M. N. Lumley, David J. A. Dozois, K. H. Hennig, A. Marsh Jan 2012

Cognitive Organization, Perceptions Of Parenting And Depression Symptoms In Early Adolescence, M. N. Lumley, David J. A. Dozois, K. H. Hennig, A. Marsh

Psychology Publications

Despite its strong relation to depression and theorized development across childhood and adolescence, cognitive schema organization has not been explored in early adolescence, a sensitive developmental period for first depression onset. Schema organization is theorized to derive from childhood cognitive internalizations of caregiving relationships, such as critical parenting experiences (e.g., Young et al. in Schema therapy: a practitioner’s guide. Guilford Press, New York, 2003). Thus, the current investigation considers the organization of positive and negative schemas with youth’s perceptions of parental warmth and psychological control and self-reported emotional functioning. Participants were 198 boys and girls aged 9–14 years who completed …

Core Beliefs, Self-Perception, And Cognitive Organization In Depressed Adolescents, David J. A. Dozois, Julie A. Eichstedt, Kerry A. Collins, Elizabeth Pheonix, Kimberley Harris Jan 2012

Core Beliefs, Self-Perception, And Cognitive Organization In Depressed Adolescents, David J. A. Dozois, Julie A. Eichstedt, Kerry A. Collins, Elizabeth Pheonix, Kimberley Harris

Psychology Publications

The relationships between cognitive products (e.g., self-perception) and cognitive structure (or organization) in clinically depressed adolescents and nonpsychiatric controls (average age = 14.68) were examined. Adolescents with major depressive disorder showed significantly higher scores than did controls on the Young Schema Questionnaire domains of Disconnection, Impaired Autonomy, and Impaired Limits. These individuals also demonstrated poorer self-concept than controls on scholastic abilities, social acceptance, athletic competence, physical appearance, job competence, behavioral conduct, and global self-worth, as well as perceptions of limited social networks. The organization of self-referent adjectives was more tightly interconnected for negative content and less interconnected for positive content …

Computational Grounded Cognition: A New Alliance Between Grounded Cognition And Computational Modeling, Giovanni Pezzulo, Lawrence W Barsalou, Angelo Cangelosi, Martin H Fischer, Ken Mcrae, Michael J Spivey Jan 2012

Computational Grounded Cognition: A New Alliance Between Grounded Cognition And Computational Modeling, Giovanni Pezzulo, Lawrence W Barsalou, Angelo Cangelosi, Martin H Fischer, Ken Mcrae, Michael J Spivey

Psychology Publications

Grounded theories assume that there is no central module for cognition. According to this view, all cognitive phenomena, including those considered the province of amodal cognition such as reasoning, numeric, and language processing, are ultimately grounded in (and emerge from) a variety of bodily, affective, perceptual, and motor processes. The development and expression of cognition is constrained by the embodiment of cognitive agents and various contextual factors (physical and social) in which they are immersed. The grounded framework has received numerous empirical confirmations. Still, there are very few explicit computational models that implement grounding in sensory, motor and affective processes …

Ontario Business Improvement Areas: Opportunities Gained And Lost, Michael De Rond Jan 2012

Ontario Business Improvement Areas: Opportunities Gained And Lost, Michael De Rond

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) in the Durham Region are taking advantage of the opportunity for greater exposure and increased profits using indicators that measure five BIAs and one business association throughout the area. They include: the Pickering Village BIA; the Downtown Ajax BIA; the Downtown Oshawa BIA; the Port Perry BIA; the Downtown Orono BIA; and the Brooklin Business Association. The findings reveal that, with the notable exception of the Port Perry BIA, the BIAs in the Durham Region are not taking full advantage of opportunities for development and they do not have the same level …

Y Now: An Update Of Generation Y In The Municipal Workplace, Christopher Kalimootoo Jan 2012

Y Now: An Update Of Generation Y In The Municipal Workplace, Christopher Kalimootoo

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines whether the municipal corporate culture has adapted to Generation Y or whether Generation Y has assimilated into the municipal corporate culture. The conclusions presented are based on two surveys. The first survey was administered to municipal supervisors in Central and Southern Ontario to determine if their municipality has implemented the recommendations from the literature regarding the transition of Generation Y in the workforce, such as mentoring, feedback, and communication and the use of technology. The second survey was completed by Generation Y municipal employees in the same regions to determine their reaction to any workplace changes that …

School Closure Decision-Making Processes: Problems And Prospects, Bill Irwin, Mark Seasons Jan 2012

School Closure Decision-Making Processes: Problems And Prospects, Bill Irwin, Mark Seasons

Faculty Publications

This paper explores the issue of the permanent closures of public schools in Ontario. School closure processes are highly (and bitterly) contested, rife with conflict, and with few exceptions, harshly criticized by school and community stakeholders who see closures as a loss of irreplaceable social infrastructure. There is a need for a more nuanced planning style that acknowledges the realities of politics, unequal power relations and the validity of community residents' needs and values. To better understand the consequences of school closures upon communities, the authors evaluate the historical and current school closure decision-making process in Ontario. This entails a four …

‘America’S “Engagement” Delusion: Critiquing A Public Diplomacy Consensus’, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor Jan 2012

‘America’S “Engagement” Delusion: Critiquing A Public Diplomacy Consensus’, Hamilton Bean, Edward Comor

FIMS Publications

The Obama administration has embraced ‘engagement’ as the dominant concept informing US public diplomacy. Despite its emphasis on facilitating dialogue with and among Muslims overseas, this article demonstrates that, in practice, engagement aims to leverage social media and related technologies to persuade skeptical audiences to empathize with American policies. Indeed, its primary means of implementation – participatory interactions with foreign publics – is inherently duplicitous. Through the authors’ description of how engagement is rooted in long-standing public relations and corporate marketing discourses, and in light of the historical and structural foundations of anti-Americanism, this contemporary public diplomacy strategy is shown …

Public Library Use Of Free E-Resources, Heather Hill, Jenny Bossaller

FIMS Publications

This article describes a multi-method research project examining the use of various freely available online collections and projects, such as Project Gutenberg, the Internet Archive, and Creative Commons-licensed ebooks, by public libraries. This research begins with the questions: what are libraries doing with freely available materials? Are there barriers to incorporating them into the collection? What role are librarians playing in expanding access and awareness of these resources?

The Firm Foundation Of Organizational Flexibility: The 360 Contract In The Digitalizing Music Industry, Matt Stahl, Leslie Meier Jan 2012

The Firm Foundation Of Organizational Flexibility: The 360 Contract In The Digitalizing Music Industry, Matt Stahl, Leslie Meier

FIMS Publications

The devaluation of the recorded music commodity under digitalization has destabilized the recording industry. One primary record industry response is the new “360 deal” form of the recording contract. By securing rights to individual acts’ live performance, music publishing and licensing, and merchandizing activities, this new deal expands record companies’ access to more profitable fields of music industry activity (if in piecemeal fashion). We examine the context, evolution, and varieties of the 360 deal, and argue that it re-secures record industry profitability and further stratifies the population of recording artists by shifting risk onto performers.
