Forgotten Voices: What Roosevelt Hs Students Have To Say About Education Reform Strategies And The School-To-Prision Pipeline, Angel Melendez
African & African American Studies Senior Theses
America's once revered public education system is now in crisis. In the last two decades, with special emphasis on the time period since the 2002 passing of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), the United States has seen an unprecedented decline in the overall value and worth of its education system. Graduation rates have plummeted, drop out rates have skyrocketed (The United States graduates fewer then 7 out of every 10 high school student)1, and the United States continues to fall behind other industrialized countries in the three main subject areas of math, science, and reading. However, …
Balancing The Process Of Democratization And The Continuation Of State Stability: The Case Of Mexico, Elise Dunn
Balancing The Process Of Democratization And The Continuation Of State Stability: The Case Of Mexico, Elise Dunn
Government and International Relations Honors Papers
Through an empirical analysis of the state of Mexico, this thesis examines the transition to democracy from a previously consolidated, stable authoritarian system in order to make conclusions regarding the challenges inherent in such a transition for the maintenance of stability. Previously, Mexico was ruled under the hegemonic party, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) from 1929-2000.
This research finds that the PRI’s hegemonic structure relied on unsustainable corporatist institutions that were built, not to strengthen the state, but rather to strengthen the party; as such, Mexico’s nascent democracy is left vulnerable with ineffective institutions with which to deal with crises …
Attitudes Toward Male Vegetarians: Challenging Gender Norms Through Food Choices, Brooke Browarnik
Attitudes Toward Male Vegetarians: Challenging Gender Norms Through Food Choices, Brooke Browarnik
Psychology Honors Papers
Research suggests that individuals learn to “do gender” and adhere to traditional gender norms from an early age. Those who do not do gender on a daily basis often experience adverse consequences (e.g., ridicule from others). The present study was designed to expand upon the literature regarding perceptions of a particular group of men who do not conform to gender norms – male vegetarians. Participants read one of four brief scenarios about a vegetarian or omnivore, male or female student who is vying for a student government position. After reading the scenario, participants 1) answered a series of questions about …

Listen Carefully Y Presta Atención: Selective Attention In Late L2 Learners, Jennifer Anderson
Psychology Student Work
The current study sought to understand the effects of two languages on selective attention in a complex listening environment. Adult second language learners of Spanish of high or low proficiency attended to one spoken message in one ear while ignoring another from their other ear in a dichotic listening task. The language of each message was either English or Spanish. While both proficiency level groups performed worse on the dichotic listening task when attending to their second language, the high proficiency group was significantly better than the low proficiency group at attending to their second language and ignoring their native …
Time For Myself, Time For Others: Gender Differences In The Meaning Of Retirement, Kate L. Lanning
Time For Myself, Time For Others: Gender Differences In The Meaning Of Retirement, Kate L. Lanning
Sociology Honors Projects
Research has demonstrated that work is a meaningful activity that contributes to peoples' identities. This meaning, however, may depend on the stage of the life course that one is in, and may be gendered. To contribute to understanding the social meaning of work and potentially gendered life-course transitions, I examine the experiences of older adults with work and retirement. Through interviews with both retired and working older adults, I examine whether and how older men and women differ from each other in the workplace and in retirement. Men and women face different challenges if they continue to work and when …
The Effect Of Gender On Recalling Facial Features: Does Our Gender Determine Which Features Are Encoded At First Glance?, Stephanie Kaplan
The Effect Of Gender On Recalling Facial Features: Does Our Gender Determine Which Features Are Encoded At First Glance?, Stephanie Kaplan
Psychology Student Work
Previous research has implied that the accuracy of facial recognition may depend on the amount of time and attention paid to a particular feature. Recent studies have suggested that there may be an observer sex difference in visual scanning of unfamiliar faces, implying women and men may be processing different information (Hall, Hutton, & Morgan, 2010). While it has been shown repeatedly that women are more accurate at facial recognition and recognition of emotion, it has not yet been discovered if there is an individual feature that makes their increased recall possible. A better understanding of the interaction between gender …
Modeling The Effects Of Air Transport Liberalization On The Airline Industry, Pukar Kc
Modeling The Effects Of Air Transport Liberalization On The Airline Industry, Pukar Kc
Economics Honors Papers
The thesis develops theoretical models to examine the effects of air transport liberalization on the airline industry. The models make use of Nash non cooperative, Stackelberg and Cournot game models to illustrate how the airline industry is impacted when liberalization in the form of granting air traffic rights and antitrust immunity to airlines is implemented. Beginning with the discussion of regulation in the airline industry, the thesis goes on to study the spread of air transport liberalization in several parts of the world. The effects of liberalization are analyzed in context of air fares, route operation structure, and strategic behavior …

The Value Of The Curriculum Center's Mission Statement: Meeting The Needs Of Evolving Teacher Education, Julie L. Miller, Nadean Meyer
The Value Of The Curriculum Center's Mission Statement: Meeting The Needs Of Evolving Teacher Education, Julie L. Miller, Nadean Meyer
Scholarship and Professional Work
This chapter explores the value of creating a mission statement to help redefine the academic library's curriculum center in the context of the current dynamic teacher education environment. The mission statement and related texts, such as vision, values, and guiding principle statements, define the purpose of the center for its constituents. It acts as a bridge between communities of practice and organizations, demonstrating the relationship of the center to the teacher education program, the academic library, and the college or university. Most importantly, the mission statement provides guidance for making policy and procedure decisions that are proactive. In an evolving …
Lessons From Libya: A Situational Approach To The Generic Criticism Of President Obama's March 28, 2011 Address To The Nation On Libya, Amy L. Schumacher
Lessons From Libya: A Situational Approach To The Generic Criticism Of President Obama's March 28, 2011 Address To The Nation On Libya, Amy L. Schumacher
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Many scholars have called the utility of the generic method of rhetorical criticism into question. Adopting a situational approach to generic rhetorical criticism increases the value of the method considerably. By analyzing situational constituents (scene, purpose, agent, act, agency, and audience) surrounding a discourse, a critic gains a holistic understanding of that text. When coupled with generic comparisons - whether the critic proceeds inductively or deductively - he or she can then trace the recurrent rhetorical strategies across time and place and, simultaneously, highlight the elements unique to the particular rhetor and discourse. I demonstrate this approach through an analysis …
The Effect Of Homeownership On Household Savings In The United States, Jacquelyn Ammirato
The Effect Of Homeownership On Household Savings In The United States, Jacquelyn Ammirato
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper examines the effect of changes in house prices on the saving patterns of households in the United States of America. The paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Three empirical models are run, one for 2009, one for 2005 and one for 1999 data, to account for differences in household income, age of the head of household, employment status, and mortgage information. The results indicate that whether the home is owned or rented has a significant impact on household savings in each year.
Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet
Offshoring And The Effects On American It Workers, Kristen Bousquet
Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal
This paper will use an existing model from Amiti and Wei (2009) to illustrate the potentially positive effects that offshoring will have on the productivity of American IT workers and the IT industry. The inputs that will be used to measure productivity are labor, capital, materials, service inputs, and the offshoring of materials and services and were collected from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Based on a previous study from Amiti and Wei (2009), the results may suggest that there is a positive correlation from offshoring and productivity.

A Scalable Distributed Syntactic, Semantic And Lexical Language Model, Ming Tan, Wenli Zhou, Lei Zheng, Shaojun Wang
Kno.e.sis Publications
This paper presents an attempt at building a large scale distributed composite language model that is formed by seamlessly integrating an n-gram model, a structured language model, and probabilistic latent semantic analysis under a directed Markov random field paradigm to simultaneously account for local word lexical information, mid-range sentence syntactic structure, and long-span document semantic content. The composite language model has been trained by performing a convergent N-best list approximate EM algorithm and a follow-up EM algorithm to improve word prediction power on corpora with up to a billion tokens and stored on a supercomputer. The large scale distributed composite …
Dynamic Aspects Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern
Dynamic Aspects Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
Auditory imagery can represent many aspects of music, such as the starting pitches of a tune or the instrument that typically plays it. In this paper, I concentrate on more dynamic, or time-sensitive aspects of musical imagery, as demonstrated in two recently published studies. The first was a behavioral study that examined the ability to make emotional judgments about both heard and imagined music in real time. The second was a neuroimaging study on the neural correlates of anticipating an upcoming tune, after hearing a cue tune. That study found activation of several sequence-learning brain areas, some of which varied …

The Journal’S The Thing: Teaching Natural History And Nature Writing In Baja California Sur, John S. Farnsworth, Christopher Beatty
Environmental Studies and Sciences
The skills of making informed observations, synthesizing those observations, and communicating them effectively are central to the naturalist. Developing university courses that optimize instruction in these skills simultaneously can, however, be a challenge. Here we describe a program at Santa Clara University comprised of two integrated co-requisite courses, Writing Natural History (ENVS 142) and The Natural History of Baja (BIOL/ENVS 144). Lectures through the 10-week winter quarter expand students’ knowledge of the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Baja Peninsula and help them to develop descriptive writing skills. The courses culminate in a ten-day expedition to the Baja Peninsula and Isla …
