Digital Radio Policy In Canada: From Analog Replacement To Multimedia Convergence, Brian O'Neill

Digital radio policy in Canada has moved from a position of seeking to migrate all radio broadcasting onto a single digital transmission system (Eureka-147) to a multi-platform, cross-media and multimedia approach. The most recent digital radio policy of 2006 suggests a range of new possibilities for radio broadcasting, including multimedia broadcasting, but as a result has compromised the early adoption of the Eureka-147 standard. This paper contrasts the different policy contexts of 1995 and 2006 and argues that the competing technological options for digital audio delivery now pose significant dilemmas for broadcasters and policy makers.

The economic survey on Ireland by the OECD (issue 5 2008) proposed phasing out policies that distort the housing market, which in turn could help to dampen future housing cycles and maintain competitiveness in the economy.

Specifically it suggests that tax breaks favouring owner occupation contributes to making housing expensive and that these effects could be reduced either by “limiting mortgage tax relief… or by implementing a property tax”.

This project examines the individual, social, political, and philosophical implication of each country’s model for dealing with drug use/addiction and compares and contrast them to deduce which is most effective overall. This essay examines the confluence of local and global dynamics, exploring how transnational migration affects and is affected by gender roles, kinship relations, intergenerational obligations, and ideologies of parenthood. Journeying to the Middle East repeated on two-year labor contracts, many of Sri Lanka’s migrant housemaids leave behind their husbands and children. Women’s long-term absences reorganize and disrupt widely accepted gendered attributions of parenting roles, with fathers and female relatives taking over household tasks. Migrants say that economic difficulties prompt migration, and assess commitment to kin in financial terms. The government also benefits from remittances. Excavations of prehistoric and contact-period houses on the southern Northwest Coast of North America have exposed very large interior pit complexes. The complexes are either long trenches or rows of pits beneath the house floors. They are associated with substantial permanently occupied houses dated to between 300 CAL B.G. and A.D. 1830. The pits add significantly to the storage potentials of these houses and suggest surplus production.

Determining The Impact Of Food Price And Income Changes On Body Weight, Christiane Schroeter, Jayson Lusk, Wallace Tyner

We develop a theoretical model to identify conditions under which price and income changes are most likely to change weight. Although it is intuitive that raising the price of high-calorie food will decrease consumption of such goods; it is not clear that such an outcome will actually reduce weight. Our empirical analysis demonstrates a case where a tax on food away from home, a food intake category blamed for much of the rise in obesity, could lead to an increase in body weight; a finding which emphasizes the need to employ economic modeling when developing public policy to reduce obesity.

The article announces that the Spout Springs Branch of the Hall County Library System in Georgia is tentatively scheduled to open in late spring 2008. The budget for the project will total approximately $6 million and will be located in Flowery Branch at the corner of Spout Springs Road and Lake Sterling Boulevard. Pope Partners of Roswell is the architectural firm for the project. Scroggs and Grizzel Contracting Inc. of Gainesville managed the construction. Some special highlights of the facility include a large computer lab and a dedicated storytime room.

The article reports on the expansion of the Chickamauga Public Library, a branch of the Cherokee Regional Library System in Georgia. It has experienced such growth in programming and book collections that an expansion was greatly needed. The city of Chickamauga, upon the recommendation of John Culpepper, city utilities manager, allocated $100,000 of local special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds for the expansion and redesign of the library. Library manager Bobbie Abernathy lobbied to bring about public awareness of the expansion need and to secure local and state funding.

The article reveals that the Odum Library of Valdosta State University in Georgia participated in the LibQual™ survey to assess how well the library is performing in three specific areas: Effect of Service, Library as Place and Information Control. The Library as Place section was of the greatest interest for survey participants. Noise in the library received by far the most comments, most of them negative. The author examines the noise phenomenon in his library, reviewed its history, contemplated his developing attitudes, and analyzed his thoughts about the noise issue.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how retrospective-test/post-test perceptions of science teaching self-efficacy differ according to personalscience expectancy and science teaching outcome expectancy among preservice elementary teachers when exposed to a science teaching methods course. Preservice elementary teacher candidates (N=69) enrolled in Spring and Fall 2007 sessions of an elementary science methods class were asked to assess their science teaching self-efficacy using the Science Teaching Expectancy Belief Instrument (STEBI-B). The survey was administered three times using pre-test, post-test and retrospective-test methodology. The 23-item instrument contains a Likert-scale with a 1 to 5 range of "strongly disagree" to "strongly …

In 2003 the National Education Association annual survey revealed that male teachers currently make up 35% of America's kindergarten through 12 th grade classroom teaching cadre. In grades kindergarten through sixth grade, men comprise 9% of the classroom teachers, and only 2% of classroom teachers inkindergarten through third grade are men. In 1994 Sadker and Sadker published Failing at Fairness, which examined gender biases in American kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms, including the effects of the overwhelmingly-female faculties. With almost 200,000 cases of breast cancer diagnosed annually in the United States, a fact often overlooked is that approximately one percent of the newly-diagnosed patients are male. Because of their small numbers, however, very little is known about how males are affected by a diagnosis of breast cancer. This thesis examined criminal histories of methamphetamine users in rural counties of Arkansas. More specifically, the study explored the difference between methamphetamine users with and without criminal histories. Although there are plenty of research on demographic characteristics, sociological attributes, and drug dependencies of methamphetamine users, there seems to be a gap in the literature focusing on why certain methamphetamine users have been arrested versus users who have not been arrested.
