The role of positive and negative life events, coping style, and adjustment in predicting relational aggression in college students was investigated using a sample of fifty-one 17-19 year old male (n = 16) and female (n = 35) first year college students. The role of parental psychological control and perceived parent-child and peer relationship quality in predicting relational aggression was also assessed. Students who were less well-adjusted to college academically and socially, and who were less satisfied with and committed to their choice of college, used more relational aggression. The researcher conducted an online survey through social networking sites to identify coping processes utilized by first responders responding to a Community Traumatic Event (CTE) and to identify beneficial supportive services. The majority of participants utilized positive coping styles with "positive reappraisal" being the most common type of coping used. Debriefing was found to be the most commonly used supportive service and was helpful for the majority of participants who used it. Factors including type of CTE and proximity of the CTE to friends and family also played a role in how first responders coped. Implications for research and practice …

The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the influence of family, peer, and society in interactions with personal factors on drug use among young adults in Vietnam. The study is based on empirical data collected among 189 young adults aged 18 - 27 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The sample included 113 subjects who had used drug, and 76 had not. Ecological perspectives and social leaning theory provide a framework for this study. Testing Classification Systems For Reference Questions, Deborah Boran Henry, Tina M. Neville

Two reference question classification systems were tested using data from a small academic library. Results indicate that a skill/strategy based approach, rather than a system based on resources used or time allocated per question, leads to more consistent classification and provides a more accurate reflection of today's reference desk activity.

Ageism can be defined as positive or negative attitudes toward a group based solely on their age. The present study examined the effect of the contact hypothesis (Allport, 1958) on ageism. Specifically, work-related and non work-related contact effects on both general ageism and ageism in the workplace were assessed. Study 1 examined the effect of the quantity of contact on ageism, while Study 2 examined the Quality X Quantity interaction of situation-specific contact on ageism. Ageism was measured using the previously developed Comprehensive Scale of Ageism (Tipton, 2005), while ageism in the workplace was measured by Ringenbach's (1994) Age Stereotypes …

Reactions to an intergroup distinctiveness manipulation and a potential mechanism of intergroup boundary maintenance between liberals and conservatives were investigated. In Study 1, self-identified liberals and conservatives (N = 121) read an ostensible newspaper article depicting either high or low levels of distinctiveness between their groups on political issues and responded to items assessing the consistency of the encountered article with held views and attitudes towards the article's content. Participants' level of identification with their political orientation category moderated the relationship between distinctiveness and reported consistency. Thirty four Standard English (SE) speakers in Experiment 1, twelve SE speakers in Experiment 2, and one hundred and thirty one SE speakers in Experiment 3 were recruited from the Psychology Participant Pool at the University of Texas, Arlington. The present study was an on-line correlational survey study of 377 UT-Arlington undergraduates. It examined what personality variables predicted university-level academic performance over and above conscientiousness, after also controlling for gender and previous academic ability (that is, high school rank and SAT scores). I found that conscientiousness predicted university GPA after controlling for gender and previous academic ability (high school rank and SAT score). However, some of predictive validity of conscientiousness proved to be attributable to more specific predictors such as academic locus of control and self-expectancy (H1). Psychometric validation of health outcomes measures ensures that the methods utilized to evaluate treatment effects, and aid in individual patient diagnosis are reliable, valid, and meaningful. A relatively new concept within the psychometric process of validation is the assessment of responsiveness, or the ability of an instrument to detect clinically meaningful change. Clinically meaningful change may be defined through subjective, self-reports of change, physician-based assessment, or through objective outcome criteria. This study focuses on the AMBER Alert system, in particular the criteria that should be present prior to the issuance of an alert. The purpose of this study is to review individual state's AMBER Alert activation criteria as they relate to the suggested federal AMBER Alert activation guidelines. Police department's interpretations of their state's AMBER Alert criteria were also analyzed on a case-by-case basis. The findings of this study suggest that the federal government should ensure that all states use standardized activation criteria that includes confirmation of an abduction prior to an AMBER Alert activation.

In Kenya the proportion of eligible HIV-positive children receiving ART treatment is only 11 percent. This study explored and documented possible barriers in the community to accessing pediatric HIV testing and treatment, to guide the development of new interventions to encourage uptake. The study identified barriers such as cost, use of traditional healers, low knowledge of treatment options, attitudinal barriers, stigma, unique treatment issues, and dissatisfaction with available services. Additionally, healthcare workers missed opportunities to provide services and cited numerous service-side challenges. The present study was undertaken by the Population Council in partnership with Annamali University, Tamil Nadu, India to study the broad patterns and motivating forces driving migrant men’s mobility and the contexts that determine and influence their engaging in high-risk activities that increase their vulnerability to HIV. The results indicate large interdistrict movements of working men in Tamil Nadu with a little variation across districts and greater mobility among younger men.
