Videogames are rapidly becoming more popular with children and adults alike. Ever since the mid 1980s, videogames have been a major part of pop culture and a widely accepted form of entertainment. With more advances of technology and internet, online gaming has also evolved. Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games such as Everquest and World of Warcraft have become a topic of addiction (msnbc.com, 2008). Some individuals have neglected jobs, families, and personal well-being to continue to play these games, with signs of addiction mimicking substance addiction. This research paper explores the former and current status of Vocabulary learning and teaching, as well as the intricacy and relevance of word knowledge. By presenting a personal introspection on the challenges of Vocabulary acquisition at an advanced level, the present work also provides important insights into vocabulary development in the four skills. In the next section, two Vocabulary Acquisition Strategies for advanced learners are described and illustrated followed by an analysis. The final chapter is devoted to the conclusions of this research journey, the limitations faced and some suggestions for further research.

Data Clustering For Fitting Parameters Of A Markov Chain Model Of Multi-Game Playoff Series, Christopher M. Rump

We propose a Markov chain model of a best-of-7 game playoff series that involves game-togame dependence on the current status of the series. To create a relatively parsimonious model, we seek to group transition probabilities of the Markov chain into clusters of similar game-winning frequency. To do so, we formulate a binary optimization problem to minimize several measures of cluster dissimilarity. We apply these techniques on Major League Baseball (MLB) data and test the goodness of fit to historical playoff outcomes. These state-dependent Markov models improve significantly on probability models based solely on home-away game dependence. It turns out that …

Caribbean development theory has long advanced a break from economic reliance on single crop exports through the promotion of domestic agriculture. Yet today the domestic agriculture sector in much of the Caribbean is underdeveloped, as the rising food import bill attests. This paper examines the historical views on domestic agriculture by development theorists with a focus on how recurring economic crises have created opportunities to advance domestic agricultural production. While internal and external forces have thwarted many of these efforts, the current global food crises may provide a sustained incentive to overcome the structural legacy of the plantation economy through …

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Data on homicides in Buffalo, New York, are analyzed to demonstrate the importance of “methods triangulation” for assessing the validity of quantitative measures. Defended community homicides are quantitatively operationalized as acts that occur in the offender’s community against a nonlocal victim. Poisson models provide strong support for the existence of defended community homicide, which is significantly more common in residentially stable and racially homogenous neighborhoods. However, subsequent qualitative analyses of the victim and offender characteristics and motives of these homicides undermine the “defended community” concept. Qualitative analyses are necessary to assess the validity of quantitative measures in criminological research.

This paper challenges the conventional wisdom of departments of parks and recreation raking sport management under their "wing." Based on a review of the sport management literature and a polling of s port management and park and recreation educators, we argue that departments of parks and recreation are bur temporary refuges for migrarory sport management programs that eventually will want to build their ow n "nests." Efforts to accommodate sport management only serve co undermine the mission of academic programs in parks and recreation by sapping resources, compromising the education of park and recreation majors, and eroding park and recreation …

Reducing press setup time is critical for improving customer value and making the printer more competitive on short-runs while increasing overall productivity. Dynamics of single curved fiber sedimentation under gravity are simulated by using the lattice Boltzmann method. The results of migration and rotation of the curved fiber at different Reynolds numbers are reported. The results show that the rotation and migration processes are sensitive to the curvature of the fiber.

The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a 2,175 mile–long National Scenic Trail extending from Maine to Georgia. Since its inception in the early 1920s, individuals, families, schools, and other organizations, just to name a few, have used the AT. Approximately 3 to 4 million visitors hike a portion of the AT each year (ATC, 2006). Throughout its 80year history and millions of hikers, much of the empirical research on the AT has focused on place attachment (Kyle, Graefe, & Manning, 2004; Kyle, Graefe, Manning, & Bacon, 2003). While Nisbett and Hinton (2005) explored motivations for AT hikers with disabilities, only limited …

Latino youth in the United States are at higher risk for negative sexual outcomes compared to their European American counterparts. Adherence to traditional sexual values may protect against or increase their risk. Past studies have generally utilized proxy measures, such as acculturation, to assess sexual values. The objective of the current study was to develop and test culturally based sexual values measures among Latino youth. Focus groups and qualitative interviews were conducted to generate themes related to sexual values. This paper examines the linkage between dividend policy and institutional ownership within the context of the dividend model of Allen, Bernardo and Welch (2000). Specifically, it provides an empirical test of Allen, Bernardo and Welch (2000)’s novel implication that a tax differential between institutions and retail investors effects dividend policies. Using merge data of US industrial firms from 1980-2002, our results indicate that the dividend paying decision is positively related with institutional ownership. That is, firms with higher institutional ownership are more likely to be dividend payers. Further, we find that the deferred tax or tax credits that the institutional …

The pecking-order theory of capital structure, which predicts that firms prefer internal to external finance, is one of the most influential theories of corporate leverage. This article examines whether the financial structure of China's listed companies follows a pecking order from debt to equity. Using the entire cross-section sample of China's listed companies in 2004, the authors find no evidence that China's listed companies follow a pecking order when they need funds to finance investment projects. Further subgroup analyses indicate that big companies follow a pecking order and small and medium companies do not. These results suggest that the Chinese …

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not differences occurred in how individuals visited and purchased products from the Internet. The study utilized data administered through an online survey to 441 individuals in the United States. The survey included items regarding general Internet use, website visit and purchase behavior, preferred website attributes, innovativeness, trust, presence, and demographics. Two cluster solutions were identified from the sample by clustering individuals based on website product categories visited and purchased separately. Lotteries as sources of public funding are of particular interest because they combine elements of both public finance and gambling in an often controversial mix. Proponents of lotteries point to the popularity of such games and justify their use because of the voluntary nature of participation rather than the reliance on compulsory taxation. This paper exploits a major mid-1990s expansion in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health care system to provide evidence on the labor market effects of expanding health insurance availability. Using data from the Current Population Survey, we compare the labor market behavior of older veterans and non-veterans before and after the VA health benefits expansion to test the impact of public health insurance on labor supply. We find that older workers are significantly more likely to decrease work both on the extensive and intensive margins after receiving access to non-employer based insurance. Library web sites have evolved over the past decade, from simple pages with a few links to complex sites that provide direct access to hundreds of different resources. In many cases, this evolution occurs with little overall planning, often resulting in web sites that are hard to manage and difficult for users to navigate. This article outlines the process of using Information Architecture (IA) to re-design a third-generation library web site from the ground up. The result was a much more usable and cohesive library web site that meets the needs of a broad range of users.

The interaction between nanoparticles and ultrashort laser pulses holds great interest in laser nanomedicine, introducing such possibilities as selective cell targeting to create highly localized cell damage. Two models are studied to describe the laser pulse interaction with nanoparticles in the femtosecond, picosecond, and nanosecond regimes. The first is a two-temperature model using two coupled diffusion equations: one describing the heat conduction of electrons, and the other that of the lattice. The second model is a one-temperature model utilizing a heat diffusion equation for the phonon subsystem and applying a uniform heating approximation throughout the particle volume. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา ความต้องการของผู้ใช้ห้องสมุดประชาชนกรุงเทพมหานคร ในด้านทรัพยากรสารนิเทศ ประเภทของบริการ และอาคารสถานที่ ตลอดจนปัญหาในการใช้บริการห้องสมุดประชาชน กรุงเทพมหานคร โดย ศึกษาจากผู้ใช้ห้องสมุดประชาชนที่เป็นกลุ่มตัวอย่างจำนวน 453 คน ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ผู้ใช้ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศหญิง จำนวนสูงสุดเป็นนักเรียนนักศึกษา ส่วนใหญ่มาใช้ห้องสมุดสัปดาห์ละ 1-2 ครั้ง โดยใช้บริการพื้นฐานและบริการสืบค้นอินเทอร์เน็ตและวัตถุประสงค์ในการใช้ห้องสมุดคือ เพื่อแสวงหาความรู้ เพื่อ ความเพลิดเพลิน และเพื่อติดตามข่าวสาร ในด้านความต้องการของผู้ใช้ พบว่า ผู้ใช้ต้องการทรัพยากรสารนิเทศทั้งประเภทสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์ สื่อโสตทัศน์และสื่ออิเล็กทรอนิกส์ในระดับปานกลาง แต่ต้องการหนังสือสารคดี ความรู้สาขาต่าง ๆ หนังสือสำหรับ เยาวชน หนังสือพิมพ์และนิตยสารในระดับมากต้องการทรัพยากรสารนิเทศเนื้อหาความรู้ทั่วไป ภาษาและประวัติศาสตร์ ภูมิ ศาสตร์ในระดับมาก ต้องการบริการพื้นฐานในระดับมาก และต้องการบริการเฉพาะในระดับปานกลาง บริการที่ต้องการในระดับมากได้แก่ บริการยืมคืนหนังสือ บริการสืบค้นอินเทอร์เน็ตและบริการข่าวสารทันสมัย ในด้านอาคารสถานที่ผู้ใช้ต้องการให้จัดเพิ่มและจัดให้มีสถานที่ต่าง ๆ โดยรวมในระดับมาก โดยต้องการให้จัดเพิ่มสถานที่อ่านหนังสือ มุมหนังสือสำหรับเยาวชน มุมหนังสือสำหรับเด็ก สถานที่รับฝากของ ต้องการให้มีสถานที่จัดแสดงหนังสือใหม่ มุมหนังสือวิชาการและสารคดี และมุมหนังสือบันเทิงคดีในระดับมากและต้องการให้ปรับปรุงสถานที่ในระดับมากทุกด้าน ในด้านปัญหาการใช้ห้องสมุด ผู้ใช้ประสบปัญหาทรัพยากรสารนิเทศมีจำนวนน้อย ประเภทของทรัพยากรสารนิเทศมีน้อย และเนื้อหาของทรัพยากรสารนิเทศไม่ทันสมัย ในระดับปานกลาง ในด้านบริการผู้ใช้ประสบปัญหาบริการพื้นฐานในระดับปานกลาง และประสบปัญหาบริการเฉพาะในระดับน้อย ส่วนในด้านอาคารสถานที่ผู้ใช้ประสบปัญหาในระดับปานกลาง The purpose of this research was to study user needs for Bangkok Metropolitan Public Library services in terns of information resources, services, library building, and problems in using the libraries. This research project investigated the community’s current level of heritage awareness in County Wicklow. The study was initiated by Wicklow County Council and the Heritage Council in response to objective 1, action 1.2 of the County Wicklow heritage plan 2004-2008, which pointed to the need to undertake a study to determine public attitudes towards heritage and to gauge the current level of awareness about heritage in the county.
