D Is For Dillydally?, Arthur J. Caplan, John Gilbert

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

Evidence from online assignments in an intermediate microeconomics course suggests that nonprocrastinators (both early-starters and front-loaders) score higher than their dilly-dallying counterparts. Students who are busier in school tend to start their assignments earlier.

The Effects Of Curvature On Haptic Judgments Of Extent In Sighted And Blind People, Morton A. Heller, Astrid M.L. Kappers, Melissa Mccarthy, Ashley Clark, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Andreana Basso, Crystal Wanek, Kristen Russler Jan 2008

The Effects Of Curvature On Haptic Judgments Of Extent In Sighted And Blind People, Morton A. Heller, Astrid M.L. Kappers, Melissa Mccarthy, Ashley Clark, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Andreana Basso, Crystal Wanek, Kristen Russler

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

A series of experiments was carried out to examine the effect of curvature on haptic judgments of extent in sighted and blind individuals. Experiment 1 showed that diameters con- necting the endpoints of semicircular lines were underestimated with respect to straight lines, but failed to show an effect of visual experience on length judgments. In experiment 2 we tested arc lengths. The effects of curvature on perceived path length were weaker, but were still present in this experiment.Visual experience had no effect on path length judgments. Another experiment was performed to examine the effect of repeated tracing (1, 5, 9, …

Danish Immigration To Racine County, Wisconsin: A Case Study Of The Pull Effect In Nineteenth-Century Migration, Pia Viscor

The Bridge

The year 1971 marked a turning point in Danish migration history with the appearance of Kristian Hvidt's monumental study of emigration registers maintained by the Copenhagen police. 1 Four years later, the book appeared in an abridged English edition as Flight to America; The Social Background of 300,000 Danish Emigrants (New York: Academic Press, 1975).

Transition To Adulthood For Homeless Adolescents, William G. Tierney, Jarrett T. Gupton, Ronald E. Hallett Jan 2008

Transition To Adulthood For Homeless Adolescents, William G. Tierney, Jarrett T. Gupton, Ronald E. Hallett

Benerd College Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Education plays a critical role in how adolescents mature into adults. A vulnerable, and often forgotten, sub-population of the poor is homeless youth, for whom lack of a stable or adequate residence creates a unique set of educational barriers. The Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis (CHEPA) spent 18 months documenting the experiences of homeless adolescents in Los Angeles, deriving data from 123 interviews with homeless adolescents between the ages of 14 and 19, and an additional 45 interviews with shelter staff, social workers, parents, teachers, and school district administrators. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 30 of the youth to …

Strategic Regional And National Economic Development With Fiscal Equalization, Lok Sang Ho Jan 2008

Strategic Regional And National Economic Development With Fiscal Equalization, Lok Sang Ho

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper shows that under increasing returns, devoting resources to develop some regions strategically ahead of other regions make sense, but this does not imply that the other regions have to wait until the benefits of economic growth to trickle down. Fiscal equalization can and should be more aggressive, with the central government incurring a deficit to help the poorer regions, and the national debt thus caused to be repaid by higher taxes on the fast growing regions. Optimal fiscal equalization should also involve central government’s investment in certain kinds of public infrastructure in the local economies of the backward …

Using The Mmpi-A To Predict Recidivism In Adjudicated Minors, Mary A. Peterson, Brandon Robbins Jan 2008

Using The Mmpi-A To Predict Recidivism In Adjudicated Minors, Mary A. Peterson, Brandon Robbins

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This study explored the ability of selected subscales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent; an objective measure of personality used in the psychological evaluation of juvenile delinquents (Archer & Krishnamurthy, 2002), to predict recidivism. Previous literature suggested the subscales reflecting “excitatory” behavior have been useful in discriminating delinquent from nondelinquent adolescents. In this study, three scales that reflect excitatory behavior, including one Clinical Scale (4- Psychopathic Deviate) and two of the Content Scales (Adolescent-Conduct Problems and Adolescent-Cynicism), were used to predict recidivism for adjudicated minors. For the purposes of this study, recidivism was defined by legal charges, excluding detainment. Participants …

Social Forums - Challenges And New Perspectives, Whitaker Jan 2008

Social Forums - Challenges And New Perspectives, Whitaker

Societies Without Borders

The author challenges the participants of the World Social Forum (WSF), an annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, to be reflective about the tradition of the forum and its methodology. He indicates some possibilities that are emerging in relation to the activities to be organized with the 2008 Global Day of action. He argues that even with few participants at the 2008 Forum, it was a big step forward to increase the African civil society political participation and articulation at the continental level.

Where Spirit And Bulldozer Roam: Environment And Anxiety In Highland Borneo, Matthew H. Amster Jan 2008

Where Spirit And Bulldozer Roam: Environment And Anxiety In Highland Borneo, Matthew H. Amster

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper explores changing perceptions of the natural environment among the Kelabit, an indigenous people of the Borneo interior. It considers both traditional and post-Christian conversion understandings about forest spaces. The former animistic ritual practices of the Kelabit centered on a spiritual dialogue with the natural world and this dialogue was often marked by active efforts to avoid or mitigate danger through ritual practice. One key example presented here is the former ceremony of 'calling the eagle' (nawar keniu), a ritual employed in times of crisis that exemplifies the dialogical and entwined relationship Kelabit had to the natural world. Such …

Facilitating Better Teamwork: Analyzing The Challenges And Strategies Of Classroom-Based Collaboration, Terri A. Fredrick Jan 2008

Facilitating Better Teamwork: Analyzing The Challenges And Strategies Of Classroom-Based Collaboration, Terri A. Fredrick

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

To help students develop teamwork skills, teachers should be aware of the strategies students already employ to assert authority and manage conflict. Researchers studying engineering students have identified two such approaches: transfer-of-knowledge sequences, in which students emulate teacher and pupil roles; and collaborative sequences, in which students use circular talk to reach consensus. As demonstrated in this article, these strategies are also used by students in professional communication courses. The second half of this article provides specific suggestions for designing team assignments, interacting effectively with student teams, and developing evaluations that value the process of teamwork.

Frank Broyles retired from the University of Arkansas on December 31, 2007, after a career in the athletic department of the school that lasted 50 years. First as coach and later as men’s athletic director, Frank Broyles had a profound impact on the state of Arkansas. His leadership skills led to tremendous unquantifiable benefits like personal mentorship of players and staff, notoriety, and philanthropy. His five decade long tenure at the University of Arkansas also led to demonstrable economic impact. The purpose of this study is to quantify and celebrate the economic benefits that have accrued to Arkansas because of …

Expansion Of Golf Courses In The United States, Darrell Napton, Chris Laingen Jan 2008

Expansion Of Golf Courses In The United States, Darrell Napton, Chris Laingen

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Twenty-five million Americans play golf on the nation's 16,000 courses each year. These golf courses constitute a significant national landscape feature. Since 18789, when the game arrived in the United States, golf has filtered down the urban, economic, and social hierarchies to become accepted by and accessible to most Americans. During the ensuing thirteen decades the number, location, and layout of the nation's golf courses have responded to many of the same driving forces that impacted the nation, including decentralization, growth of the middle class, war, economic depression, suburbanization, and the increasing role of the federal government. Four epochs of …
